Mark Cuban is Not Impressed by ESPNDallas
1-liner, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings October 12th. 2009, 10:15amMark Cuban vs ESPNDallas: Interesting tirade about the new kids on the Dallas block. We’ve left the grammatical errors in place. “I only care about the coverage of the Dallas Mavericks. From ESPN Dallas, its non-existent. Its hard to offer any coverage when you dont actually have anyone at the games. Last two Mavs games. No local reporter. Maybe the ESPN Dallas standard of coverage is to have their reporters watch the game on TV. IN which case I guess I should be happy since most of the preseason games are on HDNet … If we have just done something, trade, signing, whatever. Guess who gets the heads up email first ? The website with no one at our games, or the Newspaper/website with more than one reporter at our games?” [Blog Maverick]

ESPNDALLAS hmm i wonder what they are busy doing……….. they are probably crammed up the ass of that sorry excuse for a football team everyone worships down there. nice.

This is a strange rant indeed. So the .com is losing out on Preason Basketball coverage, not because the coverage is bad, but because resources are being diverted to other areas, namely Football where is seems as if the .com is coming at the local papers strong. I cannot be sure of course since I do not care about Dallas.
But why would you need someone at the games when Cuban says himself that everything is available via Twitter updates and mavs.com?
TBL – cuban interview in the works?

And covering the Longhorns as if they were a local team. On a promo for ESPNDallas a couple of weeks ago, they even showed Sam Bradford. If they’re going to have regional coverage, that’s fine, but don’t call it ESPNDallas, call it ESPN Southwest or something like that.

You know what New Yorkers say about people who live east of the Hudson River right?
/sarcasm.

There is a big game this week between Oklahoma and Texas, and it is in Dallas. At least for now that nonsense is a little justified.
I can’t seen an ESPN Austin on the horizon, or an ESPN anywhere in Oklahoma, either.

Except it was around 3 weeks ago. I live in Dallas and am quite aware of the Red River shootout, but as neither Austin nor Norman are in the DFW area, regardless of whether the game is, I don’t see the legitimacy in putting Bradford on a site named ‘ESPNDallas’.

Both schools swarm DFW for the game. Plus Dallas has a huge fanbase of both. Its probably the biggest annual sporting event in Dallas every year.

I used to live there, and I’m very aware how far the drive to Austin is (and which place in West to stop at). I’m not defending them at all, I can just see where they’re coming from as east coast media elites.
There didn’t need to be an ESPN Dallas at all. They put it there so Ed Werder and Mark Stein would have desks to report from, instead of from various grassy knolls, like they were doing.

Perhaps another reason to call it ESPN Southwest instead? Maybe I’m being pedantic about this, but ESPN just gets under my skin. Noting that UT and OU have huge fanbases here is fine, but ESPN neglects the fact there is (or was, until yesterday’s poll came out) a top 10 team already in the Metroplex (TCU) which receives little or not mention. OU has been treading water this season.
@Dirtheavy: what part of Dallas did you live in?

ms I see your point re the Southwest thing, but it seems to be focused on metropolitan areas, maybe espnhouston is coming…
I would have that that espndallas would get all news feeds from the .com on the area reporting but it would seems to be hard to devote too much resources towards something like tcu. You get the big teams first then build out the coverage.
Also where is gameday, could that have something to do with it?
