braylon-edwardsThis is one of those mornings where we feel sluggish and uninterested in doing anything but wallowing in a painful loss. If this were an office job, we might pretend like we “forgot” about a doctor/dentist appointment and show up a few hours late to sleep off the disappointment. We’ll be brief below – the scars from Dolphins 31, Jets 27 are still too fresh.

* Prior to the game, we predicted Braylon Edwards would have a minimal impact: 5 catches for 68 yards. His actual line: 5 catches, 64 yards, one TD, significant impact. The only pass he dropped was a diving TD opportunity late in the fourth, but somehow he drew a pass interference flag on the play (it was a terrible call). If he can play at this level for more than half of the final 11 games, the Jets will lavish him with a great contract in the offseason. After a crucial 3rd down catch by Edwards over the middle in the fourth quarter, Mike Tirico said: “there are fans in northeast Ohio who are asking where were those hands when you were wearing the Cleveland colors, Braylon?” We laughed.

* Knew the Jets would be in trouble on the first drive when Miami rolled downfield – the Ronnie Brown pass was a stunner – and scored easily for a 7-0 lead. No team looked that dominant offensively against the Jets’ in the first four games.

* Miami’s Chad Henne looked sharp. Made no mistakes. Effective on 3rd down. They already love him in Miami, and with good reason. The play-fake bomb touchdown pass to Ted Ginn in the 4th was a beauty. Chad Pennington had to be uneasy watching Henne last night. It might not be easy getting his job back.

* The “mighty” Jets defense: 413 yards allowed, 0 sacks, 0 turnovers forced. Miami and its newbie QB went 9-for-14 on third down.

* Our thoughts on the Jets’ 2010 draft are likely to change on a weekly basis, but for now, the biggest need is clearly on the defensive line. After looking so strong in the first three games, they allowed 100 yards on the ground for the second week in a row. Also for the second game in a row, they got no pressure on the QB and didn’t register a sack. The Jets are tied for last in the NFL in sacks with four. We’re thinking defensive end with that first round pick, which is likely to be anywhere from 10-20.
