Exercise Balls are Explosive, Dangerous
NBA October 13th. 2009, 4:15pm
Francisco Garcia, the frail Playboy on the Sacramento Kings, was the victim of an exploding exercise ball over the weekend. Suppress your laughter - Garcia was about to start his 5-year, $29.6 million deal, and will be on the shelf at least four months with a broken right radius in his forearm and ligament damage in his wrist. Garcia was thought to be a “glue guy” for the Kings, who should win about 25 games (Tyreke Evans, however, is our pick for ROY) this year. If this is how the injury happened – “Before the injury occurred, the 195-pound Garcia was lying on his back doing dumbbell presses with 90-pound weights in each hand, according to Kings players” – we’ll never lay on a exercise ball again. That whole ‘A-B’ thing looks complicated.

Two PGs from Memphis winning the ROY back to back? who would have thought that

i call bullshit…no way that a 195 dude with a huge wingspan like that can do dumbell presses with 90 lb weights in each hand.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Based on the story, it sounds like he was lying on one of these and it popped. Exercise balls and medicine balls aren’t the same thing.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
he isnt curling them he is kinda bench pressing them.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
that’s why it’s confusing. it’s not a medicine ball, just an exercise ball.
but if you lay on medicine balls while bench pressing….damn, that’s hardcore.

As both a former trainer and exercise equipement store manager, I feel like I’m qualified to address this story.
First off, this is correct, medicine balls and exercise balls and two different things, and he was on an exercise ball.
Secondly, there are different qualifies of exercise balls, some of which can withstand upwards of 400+ pounds. Now it may be that he was just on a defective ball, and shit happens.
However to say that you won’t use an exercise ball again because of this is equivalent to saying that you won’t do bench press because of what happened to that USC player last week.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
I was thinking this too. Gotta go with Griffin though, I love that guy’s athleticism. A little undersized to play the 4, but I think he’ll be fine because of great footwork and because he’s a freak. If he can develop a mid-range jump shot and play the 3, you can book him for ROY. Unless LA already is developing him to play the 3 to start the season.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
i know this. and i still call bullshit.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Don’t see him getting enought touches, or being nearly focused enough…..my money is on Blake
October 13th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
We’ll? I think your problem is you’re laying on a medicine ball with another dude.

thats funny as shit. who lost their job over letting kids throw those 10 pound medicine balls at each other’s head?
October 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
The way I see it the Suns are going to try to put up 130 a night. Give me the athletic kid with Steve Nash giving him easy buckets. Should put up the numbers necessary

A quick search shows that I was undershooting their capabilities.

agree with all this. I dont agree with your comment about him playing the 3

Bucs pass on Matt Jones, sign Yamon Figurs http://is.gd/4i2Gy
Jones is still on the market.
you’re wrong though. and all your teams suck.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
That video is hilarious, and Dunleavy says Griffin is going to play the 4. Thornton can play the 3 if they aren’t sick of him yet.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
I would normally agree….but his jumper is iffy at best, and his stength, filling the lane and one bounce moves from 15 feet out, is already there in the form of Amare. Plus he has been known to mentally check out of practices and games and is immature. I think there will be a 2-3 year period befor ehe contributes regularly

Nice shout out to Hernia and Sparty on SN. I heard Beadle likes to bang bloggers.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

October 13th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
how am i wrong? i know the difference between a bench press and a curl.
90 lb. dumbells is a lot of weight for a scrawny, lanky dude to bench press.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
No irish, my bad, saw it in the thread earlier today. Ruck, it was plug for the blog. i think it was yesterday

i read somewhere that Beadle is a squirter. i’ll find it tomorrow
October 13th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
no shit, BUT STILL…when you see numerous guys at the NBA combine struggle to bench press the required 185 lb barbell that many times, it just seems fishy.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
I think she’s hot because i get a feeling she kinda knows what she’s talkin about. She’s got like 7 tats too and she always looks good on the tube. IMO. Tats are hot.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
I don’t care what the exercise ball weight resistance was, I wouldn’t do 90 pound dumbell chest presses on one.
@mrejr, Kevin Durant couldn’t bench 185 pounds once when he came into the league. Probably can now, but it’s hard for tall lanky guys with long arms to bench/dumbell press a lot of weight because of physics.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
If this is true i have found my dream woman. Get on that shit Irish.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
mrejr…one last thing…he got up 185 lbs. FIVE times at the NBA combine and has a 6′10.75″ wingspan.
FISHY!!!
/anyone who’s lifted knows dumbells are a lot harder to bench with than a barbell
October 13th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
I’m sure Tayshaun Prince is also in fantastic shape, but dude isn’t pressing more than 30 pound dumbbells laying down, especially on a medicine ball.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Beadle is the chick you can go to the bar with, drink some brews and talk about sports with her being knowledgeable about them. That I think is awesome about her.
I say her looks are overrated though.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Beadle-juice?
October 13th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Why are you guys making it sound like what Durant did was the norm? If it was, why did everyone freak out that he couldn’t bench press 185 pounds more than a few times?

well so far my google search of michelle beadle squirter turns up nothing.
/this site has achieved a new level of class.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
because it’s fucking science man…
if you’re on the scrawny side, and have a gigantic wingspan, you simply suck at pressing exercises. there’s very few exceptions to the rule becaue you have to press the bar that much farther than a guy with shorter arms.
did it ever occur to you why RB’s and LB’s can bench press as much as OT’s at the combine? do you think it had anything to do with OT’s having much longer arms?
the dude’s wingspan is near 7 feet. 90 lb. dumbell presses is A LOT harder than 185 lb. barbell presses.
not saying it can’t happen, just that it’s extremely unlikely, even for a professional athlete.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

October 13th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Oh, I didn’t forget about that. I just think it is her personality that makes her more attractive than if you just saw her walking down the street and she never spoke. Her personality definitely makes her more attractive than her looks do.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
you’d think, you know, because as mrejr said, he’s a pro athlete, that there’d be a trainer around somehwere telling him he’s a fucking idiot.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@ rondoman
my point exactly
October 13th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
the same reason why the short scrawny marines with short arms could do more pull ups than those that are tall and have long arms.

Where does Beadle go when SN gets canned?
What other show/platform could she show her personality that much?

October 13th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I don’t know how this is a response to my comment. I’m just saying, using Durant’s 185 combine numbers as a basis for comparison probably isn’t that accurate.

Spencer is 100% correct. To believe he did this with 90 lb dumb bells strains the imagination. I’d like to see a hardcore body builder accomplish this feat, much less a basketball player.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Lifting on those bubble balls is all the rage now, but it is moronic to use so much weight. There’s just too much instability.
I absolutely wrecked my shoulder about 10 years ago when I lost control of an 85 pound dumbbell and tried to catch it. And I was on a bench. I can’t even imagine a wobbly surface. That’s like asking for it.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Some of the women at FOX are fucking gorgous. Except, you know, Greta Van Sustran. She can have all the botched surgery she wants, there’s no way I’d follow her ass to a Scientologist meeting.

Yea she probably will need to go bigger to make that successful

Is she really a scientologist? I thought my opinion of her pretty much bottomed out when she bragged about owning one share of the Green Bay Packers.

i just dont understand how the hell that happened or what kind of decisions the fans can make. it blows my mind.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Well, your body weight actually plays into pull ups too. But that’s definitely a factor.

How did she manage to get a share of the Packers? I thought you had to be on the waiting list for decades just to get season tickets, let alone a share of the team.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Awesome, this is my new excuse for never lifting weights again. “Waaaa, I’m tall and have long arms!! I’m never gonna get stronger!” I would rather re-watch Browns/Bills than lift weights.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I’m sitting here trying to think of a sport themed porn name that involves Beadle. I got the premise, something with her banging shaq look alikes, but no name is coming to mind.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
They sold a shares of stock for $200 a pop about 10 years ago to help finance the remodel job they did at Lambeau. Every summer, the Packers have a shareholder meeting at the stadium where their idiot fans show up to drink beer and yell at the Packers management. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I took work off a day last week and walked into a Target at about Noon and holy cougar land.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Actually, it’s entirely plausible. Arm length definitely puts a ceiling on your max and the reps you can do at a heavy weight.
But when’s the last time some of you guys were in a serious weight room? I used to train college rowers—usually 6′4+ and all arms and legs–and most of those guys could put up 225 or more at least a few times. I’m guessing an NBA athlete with a pro trainer could do better than that.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Dung Beadle?
October 14th, 2009 at 2:07 am
St. Bear offered the best explanation.
I wonder if anyone has done any serious study on the durability and wear of such balls over time after repeated use and continued exposure to dust and fine particles. It would seem to me that these exercise balls would be compromised in their ability to withstand high weight to some degree over time and use so that at some point such accidents are just waiting to happen.
October 14th, 2009 at 8:33 am
I’m sorry I missed this thread. For what it’s worth:
Benching 90lb dumbells on a exercise ball is absolutely plausible. However, for a lanky bball player it would be much more difficult but not impossible. The exercise balls are 99% safe, he was probably using the wrong size ball (or in the rarest case a defective one). Anyone that spends regular time in a gym would know that exercise balls are abused repeatedly in all different kinds of ways. What kind of tests do you thinkt he manufacturer preformed on them prior to their release? Don’t you think they would push a product of that importance through the most extreme tests to assure minimal lawsuits? I do…
TBL – your gym knowledge is called into question when you confuse a medicine ball with an exercise ball, two completely different things.
