Your Best Left Coast College Basketball Team This Year: Washington
1-liner, College Basketball October 15th. 2009, 4:45pmCollege Basketball: Quincy Pondexter, Washington’s terrific scoring wing, might be the most underrated player on the West Coast. He’s the only senior a squad teeming with young players (nine freshman or sophomores). Last year in the preseason we thought Gonzaga was the best team out West, and the Zags advanced to the Sweet 16 (the only other team to get that far was Arizona, which lost by 39 to Louisville). This year, our Best in the West vote goes to the Huskies. We might regret that call – the Huskies are thin inside, having lost Jon Brockman, but we really like the trio of Pondexter, Isiah Thomas, and freshman Abdul Gaddy. With USC and UCLA basically starting over, we’re close to picking California as the 2nd best team in the Pac-10. [Seattle Times]

Uh oh. TBL talking college hoops west of the Mississippi again. The Cassino… be wary.

Teams other than UCLA in the Pac 10 play basketball now? Cute.

I don’t think USC is starting over, they got hit with an H bomb. They’ve been erased from the college hoops map.

USC starting over would imply that they were somewhere to begin with. They had one decent to mediocre season with a one and done kid, doesn’t exactly make them top of the heap.

who do you like for POY? Randle? (all under 6 footers between randle, wise and thomas)

In August, I would have pointed out that Cal beat Washington twice last year (88-85 @UW, 86-71 @Cal), and that the team returns four talented seniors, and then would have subsequently declared them the true Pac-10 favorites. But thanks to our football team, I’m shaken right now and am worried about any sort of jinx. UW seems like the proper pick at this point. God, I can’t wait for basketball season.

Frontcourt is a little thin, but we’ve got one of the deepest back courts in the nation. I’ll take Thomas/Gaddy/Overton against anybody. This team will go to 3 guards, maybe 4 with bigger guards like Elston Turner and Scott Suggs in the mix, something Romar was unable to do last year.

Randle’s the early favorite, with Isaiah Thomas and Quincy Pondexter in the mix. Nic Wise could be in there if Zona is competitive. Klay Thompson is a darkhorse.

Only a matter of time before TBL’s calling them frauds.

Cal is better than Wash ted, football does not translate to hoops.

UW lost to Cal mostly because of difficulty defending outside shots due to late rotations with small guards. Cal still matches up with UW extremely well because not much has changed about that (lest Elston Turner and Scott Suggs (and CJ Wilcox) can become good perimeter defenders), but either way those teams look like the 1 and 2 in some order in the Pac 10, probably depending on how those two head to head games go.

Unless Cal again drops games to the likes of Stanford and Oregon State, in which case UW will waltz to the league title.
