If Not For a Chase Utley Error, Los Angeles Fans Would Already Have the Lakers on the Mind
Baseball, Mike Vick, NFL October 19th. 2009, 11:45am
The Phillies pounded the Dodgers in frigid Philadelphia 11-0 last night. Cliff Lee, like Pedro on Friday, was dominant. If not for a rare, 8th inning throwing error by Chase Utley in game two, Philly fans would be bringing brooms to to the ballpark tonight. The Dodgers offense, 4th in hitting and OBP this season in MLB, has been dormant in the last two games, mustering just eight hits in the last 18 innings. Ryan Howard has six RBI in the series; the Dodgers have eight runs.
Worth noting: Philles 11, Eagles 9. If you’re wondering: Mike Vick had one carry for -4 yards.

little confused, i thought TBL wanted Vick to do well?
October 19th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Dodgers still very much in the series. Thank God they play every day so that knee jerk reactions don’t last a week like football. Besides, we all want to see more Sam from Who’s the Boss, right?

Maybe Howard can play left tackle for the Eagles if the news on Jason Peters’ MRI is bad.
/King Dunlop? Really?
October 19th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
They got blown out in one game. First two games were close. It doesn’t mean anything other than Kuroda had a bad night/shouldn’t have been pitching in the first place.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
If George Sherrill didn’t have his first bad day since coming to the NL the Dodgers would be up 2-1.

andy reid gave all the weapons to his sons instead of D-Mac (as Stu Scott so eloquently calls him)

Your saying the excuse should be he’s black so he shouldn’t be expected to be very good?

LAD vs. Blanton:
Ethier 5-11
ManRam 14-25
Loney 5-8
PHI vs. Wolf:
Utley 0-8
Howard 1-9
Werth 0-9
I like the Dodgers’ chances tonight.

Not only are the shock moving but the front page of ESPN says Jeff Fisher is on the hot seat. Strange times we’re living in.

Irrational McNabb hatred is one of my favorite sports fan phenomenon.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Not even close. You can be critical of a black quarterback and not be racist. And not be Rush Limbaugh. The media hasn’t figured that out yet.
McNabb “needs more weapons.”
Vick “needed more weapons.”
Jason Campbell “had too many offensive coordinators.”
Steve McNair wasn’t injury prone. He was a “Warrior.”
JaMarcus Russell “never had a chance because he’s on the Raiders.”

nah i know a dude who plays for the shock sir
October 19th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Sorry jay, I didn’t mean to cut off JPQ’s response, I was actually responding to his response to you, which was in itself a response to him saying he heard something similar five or six years ago, and that would then be the excuse, cause he’s black. I’m sure this makes sense to everybody. Generally agree with you, haven’t seen too many people defend Jason Campbell though.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I’m just tired of the pity party. “I was booed on draft day. Rush Limbaugh was mean to me. T.O. was mean to me. I don’t have any wide receivers. I was sick the day of the Super Bowl. I’m gonna go on Real Sports and tell Bryant Gumbel that I face too much pressure because I’m black.”
October 19th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
thank you Jay. That was my point I didn’t feel like getting into.
Jeff Garcia is a journeyman who can’t get a job in the league right now, and his career stats are pretty similar to Philly’s HOF QB (close enough to at least wonder why all you ever hear are the negatives about Garcia and excuses for McNabb)

Taguchi, Aikman and Buck were selling the Campbell/offensive coordinator angle all year.
I’m sorry. When you face six winless teams in a row (only one of them legitimately good) and you only beat two of them, it’s time to face facts.
Funny, that offensive coordinator problem didn’t hurt Todd Collins, who led that same team to the playoffs the one chance he had to prove himself.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
haven’t heard that one, he’d be terrible even if he had Moss, Wayne, Larry Fitz, Tony Gonzalez, Adrian Peterson and the Colts offensive line playing with him.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
to be fair, Campbell is catching heat this year, finally, but Zorn is getting (deservedly) much more than Campbell
October 19th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I’m just tired of the pity party.
This is your perception, and it’s pretty far off the mark (IMO) — your re-interpretation of those incidents is pretty telling.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Of course, I live in JaMarcus Russell Apologist country. I hear a lot of that. I am of the opinion that there is some validity to it. He needs a hardass coach who will install in him the work ethic that he so desperately needs.

you just proved Jay’s point about criticizing

1. McNabb is not a HOF (yet)
2. This is more McNabb hate that ignores reality. Do you remember Garcia’s years in Cleveland and Detroit? As soon as he had some success in Philly you could read articles daily that referenced how bad the Browns and Lions were – making excuses for Garcia’s play.
McNabb gets no more love/excuses from “the media” (always a ridiculous term to use) than anyone else.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Jay,
But we heard almost the same exact excuses (except of course, the black stuff) about John Elway for years. It was Dan Reeves, it was the running game, it was Vance Johnson, the weather, whatever. I’m not a Donovan fan by any means, but let’s not act like the excuse making is all about him being black. People like Donovan, and some of the excuses aren’t completely untrue. Check the ND threads yesterday if you want to excuse making.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I don’t care for cheesesteaks.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
as long as he didn’t mentally check out of the game once he got his signing bonus, a new work ethic can improve him. is he too far gone for that? time will tell.
i’m almost curious to see who coaches the raiders next season…
October 19th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
I for one think he’s too far gone. I can’t remember the study, but a few years ago someone compiled the data on QB’s holding out their first training camp and that decision alone basically destroyed any promise of a good NFL career. Couple that with the weight problem, work ethic and any hint of accuracy and I’d bet on Brady Quinn outlasting him.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
I read that after the Giants loss that week, the Raiders players almost had a mutiny and a brawl on the plane home because JaMarcus was laughing and dancing up and down the aisle after they got their asses kicked in, and some guys really tore into him.
Maybe that will help bring the team together and make Russell work a little harder (or maybe they’ll revert back to sucking…who knows)
October 19th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
That’s racist!
//couldn’t help it
October 19th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Yes, yes. Exactly!
Wait, what are we talking about, here?
