Tiger Woods or the Field?
Uncategorized June 14th. 2007, 3:44pm
The US Open starts today, and about the only thing we can thing of to talk about is the oft-discussed PTI topic: Tiger or the Field? Truthfully, we probably couldn’t name 20 golfers not named Tiger or Phil.
Tiger hasn’t won the Open since 2002, and unless you’re a golf aficionado, you probably couldn’t name the last three winners (Geoff Ogilvy, Michael Campbell and Retief Goosen). Just for shits and giggles, we looked it up, and the last time the Open was at Oakmont in Pennsylvania, Ernie Els was the victor.
Pressed for a pick in the Tiger v. Field question, we’re going with the Field.

[Anyone in the New York City area play golf? I haven't played in ages, but it's probably time to get some clubs and hit the links. If you've got any ideas on courses to play, drop me a line. TBL2 has been tearing up the DC-area, and all his talk about shanked 300-yard drives and four-putts has me itching to play. Golf can be fun to play early, early in the morning during the summer. But you'll never catch me on the course later than 11 a.m. Too. Damn. Hot.]

I’m rooting for my hometown boy Zach Johnson. But realistically, I could see Adam Scott or Sergio winning. My sleeper, Stephen Ames.

van cortland up in the bronx, a short walk from the last stop on the 1 train and then there is clearview over in queens. supposedly the one in brooklyn is nice, but never made it over there. stay away from pelham and split rock in the bronx, no matter when you play, it’s a 5 hour round, at least.
like any place, your best bet to play early is during the week.

Word is that Oakmont is going to produce some very high and ugly scores. There’s going to be a gnashing of teeth. ESPN believed the PGA did not want to be showed up by another Johnny Miller 63 on the final round. My dollar says Mickelson will last two rounds then bow out to the wrist. Zach Johnson should definitely be considered amongst the front runners having come off with an impressive win and a green jacket from last year’s Masters. Garcia’s gonna fall apart come late Saturday. This event will demand one’s total mental and emotional commitment. If Tiger puts well, then he will be the guy to meet. If Daly shows up, then the Open will have some great entertainment for two rounds before his score blows up.

Hey Mozatta, I think you’ve got a better chance of winning it than Sergio at this point. I picked Adam Scott last week and I’m sticking with that.
Exactly where has TBL2 been tearing it up?

“Garcia’s gonna fall apart come late Saturday.”
Seriously though, he’s in dead last right now.

By ‘tearing up’ i mean ‘close to cracking 90.’

Dyker Beach in Brooklyn is probably the nicest of the NYC public courses. You can get there by subway on the R, but it is a bit of a hike on foot afterwards (maybe 12 min walk). All in, it takes a bit over an hour of travel to get there from Manhattan.
Best bet for early morning, quicker rounds is obviously during the week.

oh, i thought you meant he was taking divots on the green. cause that’s how The Maj rolls.

I saw Andy North demonstrate how fast the greens were when he tapped the ball just a bit too much and it rolled off course, that thing kept going until it stopped 8-9 feet past the hole. This was yesterday. Just think what the greens will be like on the weekend. We might not even see Sergio on Saturday. The amatuers might be eliminated after Friday. Conditions are that bad.

Bethpage out on LI is a public course. Good luck getting on, though.

Berman’s doing the anchor desk duty for ESPN. Oh, God! He talks as if he has a roastbeef sandwich and chips in his mouth. He’s the worst.

Pelham Bay / Split Rock… I heartily disagree with the commenter above on not finishing a round in 5 hours. I play their almost every week during the Twilight hours on the weekend and not only is it cheap $28 – with a cart, but it never takes even close to 5 hours.

Vanny’s very decent for a city course, as is LaTourette on Staten Island. Between the two, I’d probably opt for Vanny. I’ve heard good things about Harbor Links out on the island. Like Bethpage, hard to get a decent time. If you’ve got a car and don’t mind a bit of a drive, Monmouth County has some awesome county-run courses, plus Colts Neck.
