Brooke Hundley: Steve Phillips “bought me a strong drink and then cornered me … trying to persuade me to come to his hotel suite to spend the night.”
Courts, Legal, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings October 23rd. 2009, 9:15am
Steve Phillips allegedly texted “inappropriate things” to the 22-year-old ESPN production assistant he had an affair with, causing Brooke Hundley to file a restraining order against him in August, according to TMZ. The timing of the restraining order is important - Hundley filed it on August 20. On August 19, she dropped the disturbing letter off at Phillips’ house, prompting Marni Phillips to call 911.
In an effort to create a timeline:
* Three amorous encounters between Phillips and Hundley in July/August.
* A flurry of texts and calls from Hundley to Phillips’ wife in August.
* Hundley delivers the letter on August 19
* Hundley files a restraining order on August 20.
* Sometime between August 21 and September 9, word must have gotten around the ESPN set - Deadspin claims it received a tip about Phillips September 9.
* For some unknown reason, Hundley withdraws her restraining order on September 15.
The answer to this likely won’t be known until Hundley talks, but the question lingers … did ESPN get Hundley to withdraw her restraining order?
The restraining order development will be crucial to Phillips’ future employment at ESPN. If Hundley hadn’t withdrawn it, then Phillips’ transgression is considerably worse than what got Harold Reynolds fired (complaints against him were only through human resources, not the police). But the fact that she withdrew it could save Phillips.
ESPN also has to grapple with the question: Do we believe her allegations in the restraining order? How seriously can we take the word of a women who created a fake Facebook account to befriend Phillips’ teenage son online? How much stock can you put in the word of a young woman who harassed Phillips’ wife with text messages and left that haunting letter at his front door?

Texans - She’ll probably get promoted first. The lawyers will go after all the angles, concerned with if they fired her they could have a lawsuit on their hands because of some shit like “I was a young woman having un-wanted sexual advances by a superior, older man and I’m getting fired for coming out?!”. Then a year down the road she’ll forget to dot an “i” or something like that and they’ll fire her for sloppy unreliable work.
Phillips? If he’s back on ESPN I’d be surprised.

I don’t see how both won’t be fired. you can’t fire one without the other, and since it’s so public, canning the girl will only put her right on the top of the list for talkshows and free makeovers. Give her two days to go on GMA, Today, Oprah and the View and ESPN will look like garbage.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:30 am

The thing for me is this: You know how you say, “if that chick lost a good 2–30 pounds, she’d probably be pretty cute”. If this chick lost 20-30 pounds, she’d look more like David Schwimmer.

LeBatard had Mort on yesterday, and I’m driving and listening, and I think: “Mort’s drunk”. He’s making little sense, not hearing/understanding questions, etc.
Finally LeBatard says, “Mort, you been drinking?”, and he’s like “aaa, I got a bottle of DiSoronno (at least I think that’s what he tried to say) on the table”
I immediately thought, I bet there’s a lot of that going on right now

Poor thing…ruined her chance at decent work for the next 10 years, and she certainly can’t fall back on her looks, especially now that all the horse and steer stud farms are cutting back.
Also, I don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but how has Phillips not heard of Barney’s Hot-Crazy scale? This girl is CLEARLY way below the Mendoza diagonal…

actual question: Worth calling a lawyer to find out why someone might withdraw a restraining order?
If you’re so jilted - which she was, based on the letter - why withdraw the restraining order?
fishy.

JPQ shes a woman lawyer she doesn’t count.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:44 am
My wife does a lot of family law and sees that happen all the time. The woman gets pissed at her piece of shit bf/husband and files a PFA (protection from abuse). Of course, that shit becomes a matter of public record and the dude doesn’t want that. The bf/husband sweet talks the woman (in this case with a box of Krispy Kremes and assorted Jedi sex toys) and the PFA disappears.

The guy hasn’t lost his job. I agree if it was consensual that they both should or they both shouldn’t. Not one of the other. But harassment laws are in place because of women being taken advantage of for decades, so don’t ask me to have any fucking sympathy if it turns out he was pressuring her.

I didn’t work many civil cases, but I’m guessing that ESPN intervened as both were working for the company. They couldn’t force her to drop it, but I’m guessing they warned her that both would have to take a paid leave of absence until the matter was resolved.

October 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 am
I’ve only been practicing for a couple of months, and only had one family law situation, so, I’m probably not the best lawyer to answer this, but, if she filed it the day after she went crazy trying to approach his wife and his wife called 911, she could have just been trying to cover herself, make herself seem more of a victim or whatever.
She also could have gotten the restraining order just to fuck with him, which, I think is why alot of them get put into place. So, she could have withdrew it after Phillips talked to her about it. Or, she was still working with him.
I wouldn’t put much worth into the contents of the restraining order, especially, but, also that she withdrew it.

October 23rd, 2009 at 9:54 am
@TBL -
I don’t think its been mentioned, but one reason to withdraw a PFA or Restraining Order is so she could still see him. With a PFA or R.O., neither party is allowed within x-feet of eachother. She may have changed her mind.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:55 am
Yeah sorry that wasnt directed at you, that was for TexansFan’s ignorant comment.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:56 am
BUT the restraining order looks terrible for Phillips. A co-worker does that to you and there’s a chance you’re getting fired.
ESPECIALLy considering the history there (ie Harold Reynolds).

It looks terrible for him and it puts him into a position of having to defend himself. But, all I meant by not reading into the restraining order so much is that the person getting the restraining order can say pretty much whatever they want in those.

The last site I worked at, my past girlfriend was the hottest chick on site but the competition was limited to only three others, but I did not get mixed up until I knew my exit strategy. Sure enough not long after my exit, we broke up because things were just not working out, but the key is not being in a position where you have to see such a person at work or where you live.
I knew from prior experience that whenever you even change work site or even local zip codes, chicks don’t like it and you’ll probably be breaking up. They are just weird and complicated.

October 23rd, 2009 at 1:38 pm
For sake of a legal CIVIL order for protection from abuse, as in to avert the conduct of the abuser/stalker before it becomes criminal, it depends on its stipulations that might NOT include at the workplace.
In any case, even with a prescribed distance at the workplace, he could always crop dust her but it would not change her fart face or that of any of the ninnies in Bristol.
