The NFL’s Sorry Seven
NFL October 26th. 2009, 9:15am
Most meaningful NFL stat from Sunday: six teams won by at least 28 points. Lost has the Oceanic Six; the NFL has the Sorry Seven this season. They are: St. Louis (0-7), Tampa Bay (0-7), Tennessee (0-6), Cleveland (1-6), Kansas City (1-6), Detroit (1-5), and Oakland (2-5).
Colts 42, Rams 6 – Combined record of Indy’s opponents: 11-26. The 15-game regular season winning streak will easily reach 17 leading up to Patriots’ game Nov. 15.
Jets 38, Raiders 0 – New York teams beat Oakland 82-7 this year.
Patriots 35, Bucs 7 – Last two wins over winless teams by a combined 92-7.
Chargers 37, Chiefs 7 – KC has one TD in the last eight quarters, and has the third lowest yards per game (251) in the league. Last year, Todd Haley’s offensive in Arizona was incredible (26.7 ppg, 365 ypg).
Packers 31, Browns 3 – Whatever records there are for QB ineptitude, Derek Anderson is challenging them. The Browns have four offensive TDs in the last 13 games bridging this season and last.
Bengals 45, Bears 10 – Cincy’s 5-2. However, it lost at home to the Texans, were taken to overtime by Cleveland, and stunned Baltimore and Pittsburgh. These are two teams we have no idea how to peg. The Bears are a perplexing 3-3.
*
Peter King said that he expects Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford to go in the first half of the first round in the 2010 draft. We thought he was a Top 10 lock. But then we heard he’s going to be out 4-6 months following shoulder surgery, which means he won’t appear at the combine. His 2008 season was one of the best any college QB has ever had, but will anyone be willing to invest $15 million or more guaranteed – which is what Top 10 picks usually get – in Bradford?
King outlined these teams as possibly needing a QB: Cleveland, St. Louis, Washington, and San Francisco.
How could he not add Tennessee? The Titans invested less in Young than Cleveland has in Quinn. It is also difficult not to include Oakland, Carolina and Seattle in the Sam Bradford mix. That is eight teams with a possible need for a QB, and with Bradford having no peer in the senior class, it seems unfathomable that he could fall too far.
*
We’ll try not to go overboard this week with the Dolphins-Jets rematch set for Sunday. (Though it’s early, the weather looks to be in the 50s or 60s in the Swamp – maybe rain – which is important to hot-dog eating Mark Sanchez). Miami’s crushing loss to the Saints yesterday after leading 24-3 at home late in the second quarter, leaves the Fish 2-4. There is no way that they could recover from a 2-5 start in the loaded AFC to make the playoffs (especially not with the Patriots looming the week after). So it’s must-win for Miami.
The Jets are 4-3 and we firmly believe their shot at the playoffs is on the line Sunday. The major problem is the AFC North, which looks like it has 10-win three playoff teams (Steelers, Bengals, Ravens). That means the Jets must win the AFC East. A loss against Miami would drop the Jets 1.5 games behind the idle Patriots. The two play head-to-head again, but it is in New England in late November, meaning cold weather. It will be a difficult game or Mark Sanchez to win.
The player to watch Sunday is Calvin Pace. He’s the idiot who ran his mouth after the loss in Miami. Pace rebounded with a great game against Oakland (three sacks, two forced fumbles). Other names that will be crucial: Rookie Shonn Greene, who rushed for 144 yards and two scores in place of Leon Washington, who was lost for the season and Sione Pouha, the nose tackle who is replacing Kris Jenkins (also out for the season). Miami rushed for 137 yards against the Saints after gashing the Jets for 151. Pouha must be a factor in the middle or “Ricky and Ronnie” will destroy the Jets again.
New York is 1st in the league in rushing (184 ypg); Miami is 2nd (170).

I know bel biv devoe was on your mind for this one. Nicely done.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:21 am
San Fran? No way, we’ve got Alex Smith back!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:22 am
How did the Bucs score a TD on the Patriots? Were they all drunk by that point?
And I keep thinking that Bradford is going to do a Matt Leinart and go back for his final year of eligibility. I know right now there’s no way I’d want my team to invest a Top 5-10 pick on him.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Pats should have some extra motivation that game, defending their record..
October 26th, 2009 at 9:25 am
Good, because the Broncos/Ravens game happening at the same time will be much more compelling.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:25 am
He’s gotta go this year. He’s got to do it. If scouts convince him he’s a top 15 pick, he’s got to go.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:25 am
add the giants to this list.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:27 am
The Bucs figured out throwing long works against the Pats’ corners, too little, too late.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:29 am
where are the J-E-T-S ?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:29 am
My only regrets last week: not putting more on Indy.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Shouldn’t 2-4 Carolina be in the shitty 7 (or I guess, the awful 8)?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:29 am
?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Turn that frown upside down Sparty. The bombers are back where they belong.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:32 am
ATL, where is that from?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Pace rebounded with a
greataverage game against Oakland (three sacks, two forced fumbles)./it’s Oakland!
The Jets are 4-3 and we firmly believe their shot at the playoffs is on the line Sunday
Look, the Jets are a good story and a much better team than last year, but they are not a playoff caliber team. They aren’t better than the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Bengals, or even Dolphins. There aren’t enough playoff spots for your boys this year, TBL.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Fuck the Bears.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:35 am
TBL, King’s MMQB today.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Cannot wait for that Rams-Lions clash this weekend. Its gonna be awesome!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:37 am
It’s sad but true.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:38 am
My only regrets last week: not putting more on Indy.
This season has been the complete opposite of years past; almost every double-digit spread is easily covered and home ‘dogs don’t even stand a chance. Incredible.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:40 am
We thought he was a Top 10 lock. But then we heard he’s going to be out 4-6 months
We’ve been trying to tell you this.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Welcome back, Clown.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Kind of like the Big XII north.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:41 am
I don’t trust Mangini one bit with a QB. I say draft one of the stud NT’s, get a RB and then just go for defense.
And how much must everyone on the Browns hate Brady Quinn for the team not to be begging for anyone other than DA. Is Brady the guy who pees in the shower or who you catch looking at your junk? Is he the too-f’ing much cologne guy? Does he make the team watch his Myoplex commercials in the locker room? Someone needs to answer these questions.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:41 am
What does everyone think of Eagles -7.5? They screwed me last week so I’m hesitant.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:41 am
the browns really dont have much invested in quinn…they havent made the switch back to quinn because if he gets a certain % of snaps he gets a huge bonus…not gonna happen brady, you should have just gotten into camp on time
October 26th, 2009 at 9:42 am
I wouldn’t feel bad, Gods. Not too many teams are gonna beat the Cowboys when they’re clicking.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:42 am
I’d rather watch the Bills-Browns game on a loop than watch the shitty B12 North. That shit is laughable…if it wasn’s so depressing.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:43 am
New guy calling the plays for the redskins. Eagles are in primetime and have a chance to make moves in the division. They have to be pissed after that “display” of “football” last week. I like Philly big.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:43 am
antonio bryant made darius butler look like a rookie yesterday…unfortunately the ball was thrown by josh johnson
October 26th, 2009 at 9:43 am
@CJ- are you still alive in the Survival?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:44 am
you dont mean that
October 26th, 2009 at 9:44 am
ATL – Ah. I was just going of what he said on NBC last night.
Denver/Baltimore isn’t bad. I’ll be rooting for the Broncos … i need those teams in the north to lose. Hope Denver routs them.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:44 am
My favorite commenter. Vader Fist Pump! YEA!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:44 am
I honestly thought they would lose, but they looked bad and inept at times. Romo crumbles under pressure 7 times out of 10, but all ATL did was rush 4 and play zone. ATL plays the entire NFC East when they come off of a bye this year. They needed this game because there is no way in hell they beat NO on the road Monday.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Can an argument be made for Cincy as a Super Bowl contender? I think there is a very strong one.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Rams-Lions clash
Can they not play this game and spare people the terror?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:46 am
What does everyone think of Eagles -7.5?
They will KILL the ‘Skins tonight.
/X-’Skins fan’d
October 26th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Bo, its Jersey. I knew this gravatar would make you smile. And it fits in with the Yankees finally getting 27. This is my limited edition commenter garb for the next week.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:46 am
That line is too high, especially for a division game. Philly should not be trusted. Even if Washington sucks – their D is still okay.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:46 am
I’d rather watch Ndamakong Suh play than the Browns 100 times out of 100. But seriously, just give the Big 12 title to the winner of Texas-Oklahoma State Saturday night.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:48 am
Probably not, but it would be close. The only saving grace would be watching Suh play. He was double team every single snap Saturday and he still put up 9 tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, 4 QB pressures and he blocked a PAT and a FG. He is unreal. Too bad he plays for a bunch of pussies (on offense anyway).
October 26th, 2009 at 9:48 am
Patriots record is 21 or so games won.
cant wait for texans @ indy
October 26th, 2009 at 9:48 am
I am! Funny, I had picked the Giants earlier in the week, and for some reason something made me change it to Indy on Saturday.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:48 am
I usually ignore Bill Simmons’s gambling advice, but after week 3 I’ve built a nice war chest following that exact strategy.
On a side note, maybe its the economy tanking but taking a look at the NFL, MLB and the NBA, parity is definetely on the outs. I might even close my eyes and bet the NBA consistently this years if the large favorites strategy keeps looking so good.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:49 am
Everyone should save their money for Weeks 9 thru 11. Carolina at New Orleans, New Orleans at St Louis, New Orleans at Tampa. They can’t possibly make those lines high enough.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:49 am
There is too much drama in Washington right now. And this is the first good team they play since week 1.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:49 am
I wouldn’t feel bad, Gods. Not too many teams are gonna beat the Cowboys when they’re clicking.
It’s good to see you haven’t lost your sense of humor, clown.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:50 am
As bad as these two offenses are tonight, I may actually go with the over
October 26th, 2009 at 9:50 am
I am! Funny, I had picked the Giants earlier in the week, and for some reason something made me change it to Indy on Saturday
i picked Indy too
October 26th, 2009 at 9:51 am
on a brighter note for us browns fans (with DirectTV), friday night lights starts on wednesday!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:52 am
and as for GOtG’s “Fuck the Falcons”
+1
Everyone not named Snelling and Gonzalez needs to choke on some D’s today.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:52 am
You are probably familiar with this. Last year’s Cleveland team HAD to know the spreads of most of their games. They always seemed to make an effort to cover, I wanna say of the 66 wins they had last year, they must have covered like 60 of them.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:54 am
MNF lucked out that there’s no game 7.
glad that the WS is on wed. makes for a great week in sports – only tues night has nothing, and who cares, i have a hoops game myself!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Tues Night – Sons of Anarchy
October 26th, 2009 at 9:55 am
This team is bad, but it doesn’t help that their entire offensive line is injured. They’ll be signing people off the streets soon.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Tues night has nothing? Cavs vs Celtics on TNT
October 26th, 2009 at 9:57 am
Am i the only one who thinks hiring Todd Haley was one of those on the whim type of hires where they probably didnt dig deep enough and go out and really search hard enough for a more capable coach?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:58 am
It so pisses me off that the one worthwhile show associated with NBC can’t be seen by those of us who do not have DirectTV until spring.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Cavs vs Celtics on TNT
LeBron and a bunch of old guys?
October 26th, 2009 at 9:59 am
Some of the early lines for Week 8 are completely retarded. Dallas -9.5 over Seattle? Chicago -13.5 over Cleveland? Tennessee -3 over Jax? Wow.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:59 am
What about Delonte West?
Oh wait.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Yessir!! Ryan has looked very average this season, White and Jenkins have struggled, Turner can’t run the ball…but that is more due to the fact that the o-line can’t open up any holes. They are about to be 4-3 with games against NO (home), NYG (road), NYJ (road) and Philly (home left). 9 wins is their limit, and I’m not sure that will get them to the playoffs.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Agreed.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Bye -17.5 over Washington
October 26th, 2009 at 10:05 am
take Tennessee. thank me later.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:06 am
if it wasnt for DirecTV we wouldnt have FNL on at all
October 26th, 2009 at 10:07 am
got my tickets the other day, cant wait for the season to start
October 26th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Ryan continues to make young QB mistakes, Turner has regressed (at least he didn’t fumble, YAY), Jenkins can’t catch any more, Jamal Anderson is impacting games more than Abraham is, their two top rookie picks are hurt.
basically, everything that went right for Atlanta in 2008, is going wrong in 2009.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:10 am
A buddy of mine who regularly bets the NBA mentioned this about the Cavs, though its still insane. The fact is that NBA players gamble alot period (see Antoine Walker). I take it as a given that teams know the spreads. I’m riding Cavs, Lakers, San Antonio all year long, me thinks.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:10 am
basically, everything that went right for Atlanta in 2008, is going wrong in 2009.
like it always does for pretty good teams that make a huge jump in one year. they backslide a little the next (ie Dolphins)
October 26th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Agreed. Its nice when they don’t blow their foot off.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Have the wife break out the video camera!
October 26th, 2009 at 10:18 am
Why so everyone could watch football over baseball?
October 26th, 2009 at 10:19 am
If they played in the NFC, then yes.
However, there is no guarantee that the Bungles make the playoffs when they still have the Ravens and Steelers 1 more time each. And, if they do make the playoffs, do you really like them against the Colts or the Patriots or the Steelers or the Ravens?
October 26th, 2009 at 10:23 am
I’ll give you the colts and pats but I am pretty sure the bungles beat those last two already
October 26th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Um… when was it determined that the AFC is superior to the NFC this year? Who is good in the AFC – Indy, Denver and maybe the Patriots? Everyone else is middle of the pack. I think both conferences are about even this year.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:26 am
huh? really? anyone know their cap figures off hand?
October 26th, 2009 at 10:27 am
when the season started.
indy, denver, NE, pit, baltimore, cincy, and SD are better than any NFC team outside of minny or NO.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:28 am
SG: no love for the AFC north?
October 26th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Not to mention Pitt just beat Minny.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:30 am
huh? really? anyone know their cap figures off hand?
I think I remember reading that VY’s got something like a $10-$14 million number next year, which is why he’ll be his-toe-ree. Quinn’s I have no idea
October 26th, 2009 at 10:40 am
And Pitt lost to the Bears.
Pit? No. Baltimore? No. Cincy? Maybe but they haven’t beat anyone significant. SD? I know I’m a girl, but I’m not a fucking moron.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Wait, so the 5-2 defending SB champs aren’t better than anyone in the NFC but the Bungles are?
Pitt just beat the best team in the NFC and I would like their chances against NO’s.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:45 am
they beat pit and baltimore. that’s significant.
SD is a reach but…whatever. AFC > NFC…this is obvious.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:49 am
I said maybe on Cincy. That’s not exactly an emphatic YES.
Spencer, your argument not only made me even more sure of my thoughts on the AFC and NFC being pretty equal, it also made me hate Italians. And golf isn’t a sport.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Wow. Really? Look at their schedule. that team is a fluke throw and missed field goal away from being very mediocre.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:52 am
i hate you and all your teams suck.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Best run defense + best RB + Brett Farve >>> anything else in the NFC.
Giants = the suck. NO’s is NO’s, until they show me they can play and win big games against elite defenses, I’m not buying them.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Yes, the Bengals beat them both. Would you want to stake cash on them beating them in the playoffs? I wouldn’t.
The Bengals wildcard here is Benson. He is playing like an MVP right now, but can he sustain it? The Bengals defense took a big injury hit last week, so we’ll see whether it can keep up.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Best run defense I’ve seen this year is Arizona. They kept the Giants bottled up all night last night and that is not easy…
Minnesota’s front line is the real deal though.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:01 am
Depth really is the difference between Pitt/NE/Ind/Minny/NYG and everyone else, especially notoriously cheap teams like NO/Cin/Ariz or bad drafting teams like Chi/Den. Sure they might look great now, but by the end of the season those teams can’t overcome a couple of injuries.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:02 am
I was gonna say that Pitt’s D isn’t gonna bail out a mediocre Big Ben performance everytime, but I guess history has proven otherwise.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:04 am
I hope LeBron tears both his ACLs, then makes a resurgent comeback with the Knicks.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Ah, the Bernard King strategy of success.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Today’s Exhibit A on why I come to this site. Where else can you get a random Bernard King reference… Basketball misses guys like Bernard, whose sole job was to fill it… from anywhere.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:22 am
NFL conference fight > CFB conference fight
October 26th, 2009 at 11:57 am
I said it before the season and after this weekend I’ll loudly say it again: Alex Smith will become the legit starting QB in San Francisco… he has the smarts and talent, the poor guy just got Mike Nolan’d.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
It’s not sad. It’s funny and refeshing. I haven’t cheered for the Cowboys in 10-15 years. Kinda weird.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
You’re gonna regret the last + in a few weeks. Trust me, his “Jay Cutler” games are coming. He invented them.
