Michael Turner vs. the Curse of 370
1-liner, NFL October 26th. 2009, 5:30pmMichael Turner vs. the Curse: Remember the big offseason discussion about Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner and his 2008 heavy workload? After leading the league in rushing yards per game last year (110; he was 2nd overall in yards with 1,699 yards), Turner is averaging a meek 67 yards per game this season. He’s 16th in the league in rushing and averaging just 3.4 yards per carry, which is 3nd worst among the top 20 rushers (Larry Johnson, 2.7; Kevin Smith, 3.2). Fortunately, Turner still has two games against the Bucs, and also plays Washington, so that could easily be 400 yards right there. [AJC]

Is it a curse, or did teams just figure out that that they’ll take their chances letting Matt Ryan beat them instead?

I remember the 370 debate being much more contentious.

Jay, He only has 10 fewer carries this year than he did through 6 games last year, so I doubt it.
October 26th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I think Jay meant that teams are stacking the box against the Falcons now, not that the Falcons changed their playcalling
October 26th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Oh yeah I suppose, my bad.
Although, the Falcons probably would throw it more if teams were really stacking the box that much, right?

They couldn’t because the O-Line decided to sit this sunday out. All we could do was a 2-step drop before Ryan was getting hit. Nobody could even get downfield to stretch defenders out of the box.
Another factor is Norwood being hurt and banged up most of this year. That takes away the speed/ big-play threat and allows the defense to focus on Turner more.
And the highest paid fullback in the league is hurt and Turner sucks without Ovie clearing a path.
Oh, and Turner looks slow and fat, misses every hole.
/fuck our run game right now

He’s got hamAIDS.

Sounds like he’s having a tougher time running against defenses who expect him this time around.
/hopes it continues this week.

Don’t forget about your swiss cheese secondary
October 26th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
No shit.
Our best CB (hard to even say that) Williams is out for the season. Out of all position to get a season-ending injury, that was one of the worst. Our secondary blows… why teams run against us I have no idea. Throw for 4 straight downs without fail and you win. Doesn’t even matter on field position.

I like the sound of that.

Do 7 carries over the course of an entire season make a difference in overuse?
No?
Then this “curse” is bunk.
