Yardwork: Sammy Sosa, 600*
Uncategorized June 21st. 2007, 12:56pm
Rangers 6, Cubs 3: Swingin’ Sammy Sosa (also known as ‘Corked bat Sammy’ and ‘Juicin Sammy’) hit his 600th career homer last night. He’s only the fifth player to reach the esteemed plateau. Even Rangers fans don’t seem all that thrilled. It’s probably because Texas has the worst record in the Majors. Here’s one blogger standing up for Sammy. Is he Hall of Fame material? Got to be, right?
Twins 6, Mets 2: One of Minny’s young studs, Scott Baker, permitted just two runs in five innings, and sent the struggling Mets to their 10th loss in 12 games. How’s this rotation next year: Johan, Baker, Slowey, Liriano, and Boof/Garza as the fifth starter? We can see the Sports Illustrated cover now.
Boston 11, Atlanta 0: You see the Red Sox scored 11 runs and had 15 hits, and you figure Julio Lugo got his mack daddy vibe on. No. He was 0-for-5. Boston hit four homers to numb the fact Schilling’s on the DL. Is this a Shaq-like injury or what?
Oakland 5, Cincinnati 3: Dan Haren, he of the unruly locks, weathered giving up two early homers and improved to 9-2. Surprisingly, he’s got a better ERA (1.78) than Jake Peavy.
Tampa Bay 4, Arizona 7: James Shields was bound to stumble eventually – he got knocked around for six runs in five innings and the D-Backs crept within half a game of the Padres in the West.

So how many of those 600 were done with juice or cork?

Hey, the man got to 600.
Let’s either not be here to talk about the past, or forget how to speak English at this point, comprende’ ?

I love how Sammy’s post game speech didn’t need a translator or subtitles. He learned English quick.

The Yankees ave discovered that the Rockies are for REAL-in a major way!! Meanwhile, the Bosox have rediscovered their bats!!! Even Lugo and Pena-he who swings at anything out of the strike zone-managed a hit outside of the in field. Sammy’s come a long way since Baltimore and his last year with the Cubs. It’s nice to see him enjoy some success. Viva Sammy! Via con Dios!

100% Injury says to look the other way. That’s a damn shame that people think that way.
Hey, good news for Sammy though, he’s slightly more tradable that Barry Bonds!

Eh, he’s in the same boat as McGwire in my book. No HOF for awhile, if ever.

now if the rangers could only convince juan gonzalez to make a comeback, they could really make a serious run…they’ve got to have another $24 million laying around somewhere!

Steriods alone won’t get you to 600, you have to have skill as a batter to get to that mark. Sure, he probably juiced, but the pitchers he faced probably juiced too, and many, many players around him (that aren’t even close to his slugging achievements) probably were juicing too. When most of the league is using it, the advantage isn’t all that significant.
I don’t particularly like Bonds or Sosa, but their achievements can’t be disregarded. These guys are Hall of Famers.
And while I’m on my soapbox – Pete Rose is too

Shoeless Joe!
Shoeless Joe!
No one questionable should get in until they lift the lifetime ban on the deceased Joe Jackson.

So everyone’s juicing makes all the stats valid? Not for me.

As a Twins fan, Scott Baker is probably trade bait more than anything (Think Baker and another minor league arm for Ty Wiggington or Mike Sweeney). Silva is relatively cheap and he eats up innings, so he will be back next year. ‘08 rotation will be Santana, Liriano, Silva, Boof and Slowey, with Garza the wildcard again.

Silva? For real?
2004: 4.21 era, 1.42 whip
2005: 3.44 era, 1.17 whip
2006: 5.94 era, 1.54 whip
2007: 4.20 era, 1.42 whip
He has never had more than 80 strikeouts … in a season. He’s not an innings eater, he’s a bum. Why trade Baker? If anyone, trade Boof.

Hey I agree with you regarding Silva, but that’s the Twins’ traditional mentality regarding guys like that. They kept doling out arbitration for Kyle Freaking Lohse for god’s sake, instead of just dumping the guy and letting one of the aforementioned younger guys get a shot. Silva will probably stick around because he’ll make less money for someone with as much experience and as many innings as he’s put in, and because he plays “the Twins’ style”, meaning he makes guys put it in play and let the fielders do their thing.
As for Baker v. Boof, I’ve always been a Boof guy. He pitched well against Oakland in the playoffs last year (6 innings, 2 runs, although 9 total baserunners) and seems to pitch with a lot of confidence. I think he’s sliding into that vacated Brad Radke role better than anyone else so far. I’ve never seen a whole lot in Baker. He pitches well against some teams, but gets destroyed against others, and has trouble getting out of jams… once guys are on base against him, he gets rattled pretty easily.

ATLAS, you are a clown and a so-called enabler. Im mailing you a gun with large calibur bullets. You know what to do.

While I’m thinking of it -
Boof Bonser = Brad Radke
Scott Baker = Joe Mays
Ramon Ortiz = Frankie Rodriguez
