NBA Predictions for 2009-2010 Go Here
NBA October 27th. 2009, 4:15pm
If you’re feeling really ambitious, pick all 16 playoff teams! Or feel free to settle for the final four, NBA champ, league MVP, and rookie of the year. [UPDATE: Here are details of the Glen Davis fight. He pounded his drunk friend for making cracks about Davis' girlfriend.] Then, come back in June and brag about your prescient powers! We already took a look at each division. SI talked to scouts, who think the Lakers and Celtics will be No. 1 seeds in the playoffs. The scouts couldn’t agree on the NBA Finals, though. ESPN really likes the Lakers (every single “expert” picked ‘em first) and Celtics. Are we really the only people picking the Spurs?
East playoff teams: Magic, Cavaliers, Celtics, Bulls, 76ers, Raptors, Pistons, Hawks. (And yes, we wrote that the Hawks wouldn’t be in the playoffs … but sometimes, we struggle counting to eight. Hawks edge out the Heat for the final spot.) Magic over the Cavaliers in the conference finals.
West playoff teams: Spurs, Lakers, Blazers, Nuggets, Mavericks, Jazz, Clippers, Hornets. Spurs over Lakers in the conference finals.
NBA Finals: Spurs over the Magic in 6.
Rookie of the Year: Tyreke Evans, Sacramento.
League MVP: LeBron James, Cleveland.
Best over/under bets: Based on these … we like the Rockets under 36.6, San Antonio over 54.5, Clippers over 34.5.
Longshot to win the title worth taking a flier on: Based on these (scroll down) … Bulls +4500 (if Derrick Rose goes from very good to transcendent in a year), Portland +1600 (we still have some faith in Oden).

not enough lebron
October 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Clippers? Someone didn’t get the memo
October 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
i will be shocked if the Pistons are .500 and make the playoffs. luckily, you still don’t have to be .500 to make the playoffs in the eastern conference.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
74 of the 82 Lakers games will be nationally televised.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
The Clippers really need to look into that training staff they have.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
The Suns are making the playoffs. book it.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I went to the LSU message boards after I read this this morning and it sounds like they’re pretty sure it’s Brandon Bass.
/Hope Kevin Duckworth didn’t just die again

Best over/under bets: Orlando over 57.5 wins
Longshot to win the title worth taking a flier on: Nuggets
October 27th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
It was Shawn Bridgewater, although I’m shocked that a message board rumor was wrong.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
i just can’t see him getting enough burn.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
She seems to be quite a catch. Pretty hot, goes to Tufts, and plays bball. Hot, smart, and athletic. What’s she doing with him?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
I’m going to stick with my usual pick and go with Utah to win it all. One of these years I’ll get it right.
Other than that, I predict I’ll watch the 2 Utah games televised during normal hours on the east coast and that’s it.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Lakers over Magic, again
good to see you picking “whorlando” again Clown
October 27th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
not anymore
October 27th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I was gonna get pick French sensation Rodrigue Beaubois, but I think he’s starting the year in the NBDL.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Clay Bennett will steal my team and make me bitter about the NBA for the rest of my days.
Oh, shit, that already happened.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I predict that Shaq will complain about minutes and touches just after Christmas, directly in advance of missing 20 straight games with a phantom injury, after not being voted to the all star team.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
The original story was that it was a college teammate, and the people in the know were saying that he had a relative who played at LSU. Brandon Bass was the only guy who fit that description. Shawn Bridgewater never played at LSU.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
God damn right.
Finals: Celtics over Spurs (trying to be different)
MVP: Paul
East Playoff teams: Celtics, LeBrons, Magic, Heat, Bulls, Hawks, Wizards (WTH), Sixers
West Playoff teams: Kobes, Nuggets, Mavericks, Spurs, Blazers, Jazz, Hornets, Suns
October 27th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
ROY: Jonny Flynn.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Another prediction (I said this as early as last year from this year though):
1. The Bobcats will win 55 games.
2. They will make it to the second round of the playoffs.
3. Two days after they are bounced, Larry Brown will resign.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
If all the teams are healthy (or healthy enough that they’re not missing significant peices), it’s going to be Lakers/Orlando in the Finals again.
That Magic team is stacked and dangerous.
I don’t think a league MVP has won a title since Timmy D in 2003, so I really hope Lebron takes it again this year.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
what did the message boards say about Davis?
really surprised no love for the spurs. maybe i’m the only one overvaluing them. traditionally, i have not like the spurs.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
lol Moses Malone
October 27th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
It’s not an odd year. No shot
October 27th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
spurs cavs in a rematch of their epic 2007 showdown. This time, they wont have Larry Hughes to kick around, cavaliers in 6
October 27th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
completely off topic but did anyone else know that when you paint a room you should get all the paint at the same time. apparently if you go back and get a quart to do touch ups the fucking tint might change. now i have a god damn room with fucking spots all over it. fuck.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
East: Magic/Celtcs or Magic/Cavs…either way, the Magic are taking it.
West: Lakers/Spurs, just like the old days. Only this time Timmy is a bit old and Manu’s bald spot grows faster than his actual speed on the court.
MVP: According to 95% of the “experts” on the internet, it is going to be Prince James. So naturally, without even considering other players, Prince James is going to be win. Somehow Kobe has too much of a “loaded” cast, while James doesn’t, despite the fact that the Cavs won like 66 games last year, and should be in the 60 range this year.
ROY: Derozan (TO in this bitch!)
October 27th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
had that same problem a few months ago, sucks…wish they would have just told me that when i bought all my other paint
October 27th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Oh yeah Reaazy, in fact if I get like two gallons you’re supposed to open both up and mix them together before you even start, even if youre painting the same day and you bought them on the same day.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
well i guess this is a lesson learned
October 27th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

I’ll take the over.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Timberwolves win 15 games and STILL don’t get the #1 pick in the lottery. Lakers over Magic in the finals again.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Davis’ girlfriend.
Very nice.

The best at what he does, insane stats, eventually won a ring when the talent around him improved, and will end up with multiple rings (that goes for both of them).
October 27th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
East: Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, Knicks, 76ers, Chicago, Miami, Pistons
West: Lakers, Spurs, Denver, Utah, Portland, Dallas, New Orleans, Houston
NBA Finals: Cleveland over Spurs
ROY: Harden
COY: D’Antoni
DPOY: Dwight Howard
MVP: Lebron James
October 27th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
I love it how everyone jumps all over a 24 year old for not having a ring yet. it’s hilarious.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Would you perfer if I called him the Overhyped One? Pipe down dude, I respect him as a ball player, but unfortunetly, I’m not a big fan.
I know you’re mad that your boy wasn’t as invincible in the playoffs as you would love to believe he is, but he will get his chance. Unfortunetly, this year won’t be that chance.
Very mature.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Champs: Lakers in 7 over
East: Celtics
MVP: Lebron (Dwight Howard will finish closer then the experts think)
DOP: Garnett
ROY: Tyreke
Coach: Stan Van
Cavs, Magic, Celtics will 60+. The Eastern Conference is gonna be a war.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
completely off topic but did anyone else know that when you paint a room you should get all the paint at the same time. apparently if you go back and get a quart to do touch ups the fucking tint might change. now i have a god damn room with fucking spots all over it. fuck.
you gotta color match that shit. We just color matched a wall that had at least 6 year old paint on it, and it looks fine. We repainted only one wall out of an entire room.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Sick fantasy stats, not a winner.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Lee Corso?
October 27th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Reaaazy, you used the same product and it was a different color 2 days later? That shouldn’t happen.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Name one person in the history of sports that has lived up to the insane hype leBron has had to live up to since high school and not in the NBA? I can deal with the fact that you don’t like Lebron James, but when you make outrageous comments that hold no water, its probably time to help yourself to a science book, cuz you sound like a fuckin retard.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
now in the NBA*
October 27th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
yea Benjamin Moore. i had to buy a new quart on monday. i called them and apparently batches are different.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
I love it how everyone jumps all over a 24 year old for not having a ring yet. it’s hilarious.
Magic had one by age 20, Bird by less than 24 too. If Lebron ends up with only one ring, he won’t be the player he should have been.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
But you said in first sentence LeBron was overhyped. Which is it?
October 27th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
That might be your problem right there. My Dad’s neighbor is a painter and I used to work for him in summers and whenever I needed a job, and in my experience every time we used Benjamin Moore it was an absolute pain in the ass.
In the future I’d go with Kelly Moore or Sherwin Williams.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I’m confused, too be overhyped means you never lived up to the hype. LeBron surpassed the hype by leaps and bounds.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Individual success = surpassing hype?
Fantastic talent, suspect winner.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Benjamin Moore is quality shit (and expensive), I use it all the time. You can’t expect to create the exact same color over several batches, especially diff days. Depends on too many factors, thats why you mix it all together.
LeBron was so hyped I wanted to hate him, tried to, but damned if he didn’t totally win me over. Rare to meet/exceed that kind of hype, hes done it.

/was so close to The Fan’s Attic predictions that I almost just copied and pasted
October 27th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Yes, because reading a science book will help me make more concrete arguements on a message board.
I don’t actually mean it when I say he’s overhyped, I’m not stupid. He’s lived up to the hype, he’s exceeded the hype, he’s gone above and beyond what’s expected of him. Okay, I respect that.
But what annoys the living fuck out of me is people continually making excuses for him and refusing to criticize him. I grew up a Kobe fan, and a lot of my hate for Lebron has come out of that because for every little ounce of respect Kobe has had to gain the hard way, Lebron James has had it handed to him on a silver platter. Since you seem to love to debate, I will justify why I dont like him – its simple really, I only have 3 main reasons.
1. He gets away with arrogance that other ball players/atheletes do not get away with. – Tatooing “Chosen One” across the back, speaking in the third person, and saying ridiculous things like “a Lebron James team never loses!” are a no-no in my book.
2. He gets away with basing most of his game on his physical tools and nothing more. – Dwight gets blasted for this, while LBJ gets a free pass from the media. Suspect jumpshot from mid range, suspect shot from the 3 point line, lack of a post game, and is not known as a great on-ball defender. Yet magically he is considered for DPOY for highlight reel blocks that he makes.
3. Everything has been given to him on a silver platter. I’m not saying that he doesn’t deserve some of the praise he gets, but what adversity has he had to deal with? No one ever really doubts the guy, do they? Everyone picked him for ROY, just like everyone picks him for an MVP award and a 60 win season. When he DOESN’T win or fulfill expectations, people make excuses for him.
“His team wasn’t good enough”….where was that complaint when they had the best record in the league?
You know who’s team wasn’t good enough last year? Wade’s. Or how about the Lakers from 05-07?
How is a team that makes it to the ECF not good enough? I’m sick of the lame excuses.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
It’s nowhere near what Kelly Moore is. And that is not opinion, that is fact.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
a Louisville homer to the very end, Jay
October 27th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
He gained it the hard way by being teamed up with one of the Top 5 centers to ever play the game in his prime.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Which player got drafted by a morbid franchise and actually turned it around as opposed to holding it hostage for his own benefit?
/just lost much respect for bron complaints
October 27th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
A 17 year old rookie who had to earn every little minute of playing team on a stacked roster? Yep, he had it so easy coming into the league.
Or how about being blasted for shooting those jumpers in Utah in 97?
How about people thinking he’d never be a good peice on championship team?
How about people saying he fucked the Lakers over? How about people saying he wasn’t shit without Shaq? How about people saying he’d never win a berth in the playoffs again, let alone a ring?
Yeah, no, everything has been given to him.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
karma likes to type
October 27th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Dont forget the best coach in the history of coaching.
But hey, joining a roster of trash and a rookie (not to mention retard) coach LeBron totally should have done as well.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
I never said Lebron wasn’t a franchise player. If you’re playing 30+ minutes a night and are supposed to be the franchise player, then you’re eventually going to turn the team around provided you have talent around you.
And as for “holding it hostage”, you’re funny. I’ve repeated comments about the reasons for the Kobe/Shaq/Lakers break up on this board lots and lots of times, and I’m not going to do it again. Simply put, if you just jump to conclusions based on what you remember hearing in 2004 then you clearly don’t know much about the situation.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Karma wrote a nice Paolo-esque port, but he’s cool to me: anyone that can drops a real simpsons quote is alright in my book.

October 27th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Hey Karma,
Don’t forget about that time he quit on his team against the Suns in Game 7.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Hey, you wanted a debate, I gave you a debate. Plus, I dont take kindly to people calling me 12…I’m 8 years older, thanks.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
I think it’s just adorable how you think the Spurs can keep up with the Lakers! And the reason you gave for such a choice….. oh wait, no reason…. Well I assume you’d be going by the same “brilliant” theory that Artest will cause the Staples Center to sink into the fiery pits of hell. Good luck, but the most obvious choice is usually the right one.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
That’s common knowledge.

He’d made it clear before the draft he didn’t want to go to any one else but the Lakers based on the workout he’d had with Jerry West, who had said that he would draft him. Charlotte took him anyway despite knowing that, and managed to get Vlade out of the deal. What’s your point?

I’d love to hear reasons why some of you guys are picking Magic over Lakers in the Finals. How can possibly picture that series in your head with the rosters as they are currently constituted and see the Magic winning 4 out of 7. Vince Carter? Unbelievable. Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Jesus said that I think.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Oh yea, just assuming the Spurs will go through the season injury free(you know, because they’ve done it so many of these past seasons… oh wait, no they haven’t) is also smart. I can see these picks have been researched tirelessly for as long as it took to write the post.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

You said “Kobe has had to gain the hard way, Lebron James has had it handed to him on a silver platter.” then you said “A 17 year old rookie who had to earn every little minute of playing team on a stacked roster? Yep, he had it so easy coming into the league.” then you said “He’d [Kobe] made it clear before the draft he didn’t want to go to any one else but the Lakers”
Can you figure out my point?
October 27th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Spurs are very deep if you haven’t noticed. Lakers meh they got older this offseason mainly by the ariza for artest swap. plus bynum is injury risk and they played a ton of games last season. Lakers are very good buts its not likely they are 70+ wins good
October 27th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
You can’t predict injuries so who knows how it will play out for any team( well except the Blake injury but that’s already been beaten dead). Spurs are decently deep this year and while they will get banged up, come playoff time they will be healthy, because there isn’t a better coach out there managing his players health and play time then Pop. I like how the Spurs match up with Lakers this year and think they can take them down. Spurs are “as of right now” the only real threat to the Lakers in the West.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
1. The oldest player on the Lakers is Fisher. Kobe is only 31, Artest is 29, Gasol is 29, Odom is I believe 30, and the rest of the bench is pretty young. Based on that alone, this Lakers squad will be in contention for the next 3 years minimum, barring any drastic injuries or trades.
2. “they played a ton of games last season”…what does that have to do with anything. They played “a ton of games” in 2007-2008, yet came back to the Finals in 09. Since when is having 4 months off for summer a bad thing? With your logic, the Bulls would never have three-peated twice.
3. Your last sentence can be said about Cavs, Spurs, Magic, Celts as well. Basically, any team that is any good. Who said they were going to win 70+? There’s only been one team that’s won 70, and it will stay that way this year too.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
The oldest 31 to ever play the game
October 27th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
Actually, I wont deny that. I’m looking at KG’s career, because Kobe’s will end in the exact same way since they were the first two high schoolers of the modern generation. Look for Lebron’s to end in the same way as well. I like Simmons’ “mileage” theory…Kobe definetly has a lot on his knees.
