Our Official NBA Draft Predictions
Uncategorized June 25th. 2007, 7:24pm
This isn’t what WE would do. This is what we THINK will happen. We wouldn’t draft Yi Jianlian in the lottery. But somebody will, so you’ll see him on this list. We are enamored with USC guard Nick Young … but Charlotte probably won’t take him. We seriously would take Kevin Durant first, and the reason is because he’s a better natural fit in Portland (without having to blow the team up trading the club’s No. 1 scorer and rebounder). So here they are – our predictions for the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft. We’re gunning for 33% accuracy. If any of the rumored deals happen, all bets are off.
1. Portland – Greg Oden.
2. Seattle – Kevin Durant. Not sure where Rashard Lewis ends up. Philly? Houston? Won’t be Charlotte.
3. Atlanta – Mike Conley. Hey, it’s a need.
4. Memphis – Al Horford. If the Grizz get Mo Williams via free agency, they’re playoff contenders, even in the West.
5. Boston – Corey Brewer. If Boston takes Yi, that noise you hear will be Red turning over in his grave.
6. Milwaukee – Brandan Wright. Nice frontline there.
7. Minnesota – Joakim Noah. Don’t love him, but he works here.
8. Charlotte – Jeff Green. Should be Nick Young, but Green’s smart and ready and plays defense.
9. Chicago – Yi Jianlian. Reeks of Darko. Should be Spencer Hawes.
10. Sacramento – Julian Wright. Because he’s left, and nobody likes Artest.
11. Atlanta – Spencer Hawes. Didn’t work out so bad, did it? Unless he turns into Jon Koncak.
12. Philadelphia – Nick Young. Steal of the draft. Miller, Young and Iggy? Scary.
13. New Orleans – Al Thornton. Desmond Mason becomes an afterthought.
14. Clippers – Acie Law. Second biggest steal after Young.
15. Detroit – Rodney Stuckey. Because everyone else is saying so.
16. Washington – Sean Williams. 2nd best defensive big in the draft (Oden).
17. New Jersey – Josh McRoberts. Assuming they keep VC … McRoberts, in a few years, could be a 15-10-5 guy.
18. Golden State – Jason Smith. Makes sense … an inside-outside big.
19. Lakers – Javaris Crittenton. Could morph into a stud when Kobe walks in two years.
20. Miami – Thaddeus Young. Exciting.
21. Philadelphia – Tiago Splitter. With three first round picks, they can wait a year on him.
22. Charlotte – Aaron Gray. Surprise.
23. New York – Wilson Chandler. Because a bunch of folks think a promise has been made.
24. Phoenix – Marco Belinelli. They learned well from Colangelo.
25. Utah – Derrick Byars. Because AK-47 is on his way out.
26. Houston – Glen Davis. Bunch of folks think he won’t look terrible next to Yao.
27. Detroit – Kyrylo Fesenko. Go read about him.
28. San Antonio – Jared Dudley. Bruce Bowen with a reliable jumper.
29. Phoenix – DeVon Hardin First and only mulligan, since he’s out of the draft (duh!). We’ll go with Stanco Barac. After Amare, that frontline is thin.
30. Philadelphia – Gabe Pruitt. Heir apparent to Andre Miller?
There you have it folks. Rip away!

Pretty sure that Hardin ahs pulled his name out of the draft.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Billups just opted out of his contract–he’s now an unrestricted FA. If he decides to leave for Memphis or Milwaukee or wherever, things could change.
I also think this years’ mock drafts may be all for naught as I see a TON of trades going down during the draft.
I can’t see Wright and Yi dropping that far. I’m also not sure Thaddeus doesn’t higher.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Nope. Horford’s going third, and Law is going eleventh. Come on, didn’t you hear? Knight likes big men who are thick in the britches.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:39 pm
I feel bad for Alando Tucker. Great player, great guy. I don’t think he should be going in the lottery or anything, but someone’s going to get a steal.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:40 pm
If the Celtics take Yi, that sound will be me choking Danny Ainge.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
well your already wrong on one since devon hardin is no longer in the draft
June 25th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
I’d love it if Miami gets Thad Young. That is if he is actually as good as I have heard.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Am I the only one that will probably turn the draft off after the 5th pick? Really not interested in anything outside of Durant and Odgen. My T’Wolves will ultimately fail to trade KG and as a result end up drafting Noah who will be a bust. All the trades people are talking about won’t happen and it’ll be a dull draft.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Hardin withdrew from the draft.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Who will be calling the draft this year? The same team as last year?
June 25th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Hey Drew, while I will totally help you choke Danny Ainge, I find it odd that your blog is dedicated to all things Yankees… You are a Yankees and Celtics fan? Although it would be easy for me to get angry here, I also saw the AL East standings on the side of your blog and got happy again… thanks for that. I can go back to work with a smile on my face again.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Seconding what MtotheP said, Hardin isn’t in the draft.

I would love to get Nick Young on my Sixers, but there is no way they can pass up Al thronton if he is still there. I dream of a situation where th Sixers draft Thornton, and then trade the 21 and 30 picks, to move up to maybe 15-18 range and grab Young
June 25th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
By the way, no offense TBL, but what is with your comment boxes? I feel like I’m writing on a doily at my Grandma’s house.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
You finally saw some light on that whole McRoberts infatuation.
No jeers for your draft insight today, and Brazilian lesbians are once again safe.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Would Washington take another offensive project like Williams? Dont they already have two guys that play defense but no offensive skill in Thomas and Haywood?
June 25th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Thanks for the Hardin info, fellas.
Washington – the guess here is that Haywood is dealt.
Philly – Thornton? Iggy is already the 3. Thornton’s no 4.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Danny Mac, yes I am that rarity..Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Celtics. The C’s were on TV all the time when I was a kid and since my brother was rooting for him, I fell under the influence.
BRING BACK LARRY BIRD!
June 25th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Danny Mac,
Maybe I’ve got a different perspective because I grew up in Western Massachusetts, but there were plenty of Yanks/Celtics fans in that area. Pretty obvious where my allegiances are, though.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Just wanted to comment on the idiot that is Sam Smith. seriously, Knight might be the worst GM ever, but not even he would give up the #3 and #11 picks for Maurice Williams and the number 6 pick. Williams is not worth moving back in the draft and giving up another lottery pick.
Is it just me or is Smith worse then ever this past year.
Another another note, think Conley and Horford will be flipped and Ford has B Wright falling in his latest mock. Also, I don’t think Dudley will be in the first round and San Antonio will take another random Euro guy that will end up being a stud.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Al Thornton is all but a lock for the 76ers. Nick Young may make more sense, but they are going to draft Al if they don’t otherwise make a trade.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Theoretically, Iggy could slide over to the two spot and Thornton could play the three. The only reason most 3’s don’t play as 2’s is defense. I don’t think Iggy would have this problem.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Agree Sam Smith has really taken a turn for the worse. He’s treading closer and closer to Peter Vecsey territory with each passing day.
As for Philly and Thornton … Iggy could slide down to 2. Then what of Kyle Korver and the $5 mil you’re givin him? And Iggy only shot 31% from three last year. Wherever Thornton goes, he’s going to hog minutes … just looked at a few articles, and yes, it seems Philly is enamored with him … why, I’ll never know.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:03 pm
Does S Williams project as a Center? The Wiz won’t take any power forwards with the Russian and Blatche already fighting for that spot. Look for a SG or SF to replace Arvis Hayes.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Look, I know the Hawks have already taken Wide Receivers in the last 3 drafts, but I just don’t see them passing Calvin Johnson.
Also, I don’t know for sure who is covering the draft, but I did pass a Cheese Doodle truck in the Lincoln Tunnel the other day…
June 25th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
“and yes, it seems Philly is enamored with him … why, I’ll never know.”
When it comes to anything involving Billy King, you should never ask why.
As for Korver, the 76ers have never wanted to have to start him…they prefer to use him as instant offense. His defensive shortcomings are only rivaled by Adam Morrison and Luke Ridinour in this league.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
Acie Law will be the steal of the draft. Forget this Young kid.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:36 pm
Aren’t the Wiz set at the 1-2-3 with Arenas, Butler and Jamison?
With Antonio Daniels and Jarvis Hayes as the backups?
The Wiz had the fourth best offense … so there’s no need for scoring … they had the 3rd worst defense, so I’m thinking they need another big. Williams and Thomas would give you the best 4-5 shot-blocking tandem in the NBA.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Afflalo and Tucker both seem like San Antonio Spurs guys to me. And where is the Honka Playboy?!
June 25th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
They tend to play Jamison at the four, Butler at the three, and Stevenson at the two.
June 25th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Lewis won’t go away from Seattle – he doesn’t have the balls to be a team’s first option. He’ll come off the bench in Seattle.
June 25th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
Jamison will be a goner soon and Jarvis hayes sucks. Caron plays the 3. They will not take williams. Just because some blocks shots does not mean they are a defensive big. Ask Eddie Griffin. They should take Almond to man the 2 spot since the bigs left dont offer too much. Dudley is going to be a steal that late (he wont fall past the spurs). I think Fazekas will be a first rounder, if Phoenix needs a big, why not take him.
June 25th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
I’d be happy with Williams in Washington, especially if Young, Law, and my boy Thornton are off the board as you predict.
June 25th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
SM – Where will Jamison go? You think he’ll walk away from $16 million this year? Nobody will pay him nearly that much.
Dan – Do you really think Seattle will sign a guy for $8-10 million and have him come off the bench? Why would they do that? Package Lewis and Luke and get a good point guard who knows the word defense and insurance for Ray Allen.
I’d like to see them make some kind of deal with philly for Andre Miller … but don’t see it happening.
June 26th, 2007 at 1:34 am
The Sonics are pretty lucky to have a number two pick this year; they pretty much can’t go wrong. I would like to see them sign and trade Rashard Lewis for a lottery pick and/or a point guard, but we’ll see what happens there.
On a side note, I got to cover the Kevin Durant press conference yesterday, and he has an extremely large wingspan. But unlike Oden, he sort of looks his age (18).
June 26th, 2007 at 1:42 am
Nice looking mock. Only thing I would add is Atlanta picking Conley makes way too much sense. Keep in mind we are talking the Hawks here, so they will make the most illogical pick.
June 26th, 2007 at 1:50 am
I think Atlanta is better served with Horford and Law IV, than Conley and Hawes…
I watched Hawes here at UW, he’s got lots to prove still and doesn’t have a good work ethic
June 26th, 2007 at 2:54 am
To clarify. Jamison will not opt out, but if he is gone after one year unless they extend him (and they need to extend gilbert) they should look to get something in return. Swap him for Marion. Washington could use a big man, but they could use one who can score in the post.
June 26th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
The steal of the draft will be whoever gets Sean Williams of Boston College. Everyone’s aware of his defensive skills, but the kid’s offensive game is vastly improved.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Isn’t the NBA draft a bit of a joke or perhaps I should say ESPN’s so-called draft experts? Unlike its NFL staff and draft, which provides some great insight into an array of strategies and choices that NFL teams might make, ESPN staff dismisses most of the NBA draft choices as being irrelevant except the top five, which is incredible. I heard Stephen A Smith actually say during the afternoon SportsCenter that he knew little about Yi Jianlian because he had never seen him play and videos just didn’t do it for him. What a stupid thing to say because experts rely on video to evaluate athletic talent. You never would hear that from the NFL team. Everyone has seen why a competent point guard is key to a team’s success. Miami won its championship mainly on Duane Wade’s stellar play and veterans who contributed in key moments because of Shaq who was a nonfactor. It’s wild to hear this pathetically blind focus on Greg Oden who certainly couldn’t perform well with Mike Conley, Jr. Why not explore the talent in the European leagues or under the radar talent from smaller schools who don’t get the media coverage of Division A colleges? If NBA teams have to rely solely on the selection of one type of player, it doesn’t say much about the league. It really makes you appreciate how competitive MLB and the NFL is as a professional league. Sadly, it exposes how deficient ESPN’s NBA analysts truly are.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
I can’t believe Thad Young and J Crit are first rounders. They were good but not great last year in college.
June 26th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Spider, thats why they work for ESPN and not a team directly or an independent scouting service who charge teams. But you comparisions to mlb and nfl are off. There are much less nba players so the talent gets bottled to the top. You can win a championship with 8 good players. Under the radar talent is good, but Anthony Parker (who was a 1st round pick from a small school) did not make it in the nba at first (decent for the raptors this year). He went on to become MVP of Euroleague. The talent in the NBA is much better because the universe is small.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
SM-you make good points but if the talent in the NBA is so much better, then why did the recent USA team perform so poorly in international play? Also, if the talent poor is so great across the board, then why do you see teams getting into the playoffs with losing records or just above .500? Just asking. Also, looking at the imbalance in skilled players between the eastern and western conferences. If these teams are so great, then why would these so-called analyst screech with such concern when Portland won the #1 lottery pick but the Celtics were further down the top 10 lottery list. I wasn’t saying the better players were in the European league; I pointed out that there is talent these NBA teams should consider. They’re fundamentally more sound and disciplined than many of their US counterparts. Many European players in the NBA shoot with greater proficiency. People look at NBA players as dunkers who can’t hit free throws or mid range shots. Why not check out the mid-major schools that these ESPN drones ignore in their discussions? I was pointing out that there isn’t enough real analysis in the NBA conversation. No one breaks down film to point out problems. It’s primary playground and jock talk.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
Sean Williams is the greatest shot blocker of all time.
June 27th, 2007 at 2:44 am
As for Williams to Washington. Can anyone name me one quality scorer that comes of the bench for Washington…..there is none. Yes we have great scorering but our GM should know you can’t win with 3 guys scoring 90% of your points and each playing upwards of 40+ minutes a game. And since Ernie Grunsfield (wizards GM) likes Haywood he may be back in Washington. Add that in with the addition of last years 6′10 first round pick and the potential to re-sign Audray Blantche (who is 6′11) don’t expect another PF. Expect someone who can come off the bench and provide a spark playing some minutes a the 2 and 3.
