Penn State “Cross” T-Shirt Controversy is the Kind of Crap That Pisses Everyone Off
College Football, Fans, REligion October 28th. 2009, 5:00pm
That t-shirt to the right will be worn for yet another “White Out” at State College next weekend when rival Ohio State visits Penn State. Apparently, a handful of people complained about the t-shirt, and the Anti-Defamation League got involved, and now it’s a full-blown “story.” All 30,000 t-shirts sold. Supposedly, there were six complaints. How is this a story? Tell those idiots to buzz off and yank their tickets. Next thing you know, they’ll spill coffee on themselves and sue. [Daily Collegian]

I don’t see it. Or just don’t care. When Penn State plays on TV and they have 100,000 people doing a white out and the camera pans across the crowd, what are the odds that in that mush of 100,000+ people we’ll be able to see something that sorta resembles a cross.

I wonder what kind of riot Catholics vs. Convicts would cause today.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Exactly.
But what is with the intimidation thing written on the back? White t-shirts are intimidating?
More posts about good teams, please…

The USC-Notre Dame BCS Championship Game preview isn’t until next week.

straw man argument?
Which?
October 28th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
This seems like the biggest non-story ever.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
I think the odds are fairly high. They do have close ups of fans afterall. The first time I saw it on TV I figured it looked like a cross. I didn’t put much thought into it and it didn’t make me mad or anything like that. I just thought it obviously looked like a cross and figured it was a PSU shirt made by some religious group that was tying in the awesomeness of the PSU helmets.
Doesn’t seem like a big deal, either wear the shirt or don’t wear it.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
they should be vilified for the grammar on the back rather than the cross on the front.

True, but what I meant is that anyone who is going to get fired up and pissed off about this is just looking for something to be pissed off about. If there were 30,000 of these shirts sold and the stadium, as the shirt seems to indicate, holds 110,000, then there will be 80,000 other people not wearing it and it will blend in even more.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
the real story here is Penn St doing those gay white outs for every single game…kinda loses its novelty after the 100th time you do it
October 28th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Man, is there anything worse than people with nothing better to do? Nothing more important to concern themselves with? People like them take the fun out of everything, and will be the ruin of this country.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Fail, they only do it once a year.
JoePa = God, so whats wrong with some cross T shirts.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Exactly. Not like they’re forced to wear them are they? Are these the ONLY white shirts around?
October 28th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I definitely agree someone getting pissed off about it would seem to be the type that needs to go looking for things to get pissed off about. I just think it obviously and easily looks like a cross and seen some things written that downplay that aspect. It’s the people going crazy because it’s something that looks like a cross, that should be the focus.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Did they ever find Statue JoePa’s glasses?

Busy week for ornery Catholics
October 28th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
At first I assumed a couple of uptight Christians were upset because the cross was used “in vain.”
Then I clicked on the story and read this: “There always has to be some sort of separation,” said Berns, referring to the state-funded school and religious affiliation. “Me personally, I’m not going to buy the shirts and I know others at [Penn State Hillel] who won’t, either.”
And realized it was higher education we are talking about, after all.

didnt they do it when iowa came in there and exposed them as the fraudiest frauds to ever fraud?
October 28th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Haven’t seen that one yet. He’s the best.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

He’s older than George Burns, so you might be right.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Double FAIL. It didn’t work against the Hawkeyes.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
kind of what i thought.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
If it were an actual cross, I could maybe see their point although they still wouldn’t be forced to buy and wear one. But it isn’t a cross. It only kinda looks like one if your intention is to get pissed off and whine about something.

WKYT down here was reporting from UK saying there was a massive protest when the Wildcat lodge got a huge donation and was turned into “The Wildcat Coal Lodge”. That “massive protest” was about six students who looked exactly like the students that would protest something like that.

Never was really into the show but gave this season a look because of the Seinfeld reunion and it’s been so awesome that I’ve been watching the reruns on the HBO comedy channel…Leon kills me
October 28th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Last time I checked… most people that bitched about a religious topic were not on the left end of the political spectrum.
/just sayin’
//know your own fucking party

I almost feel dirty even thinking it, but … it’s quite possible that:
Curb > Seinfeld

You bite your tongue.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
I’d say Seinfeld having Kramer puts it over the top but then again I love Jeff and Richard Lewis…I will say it’s pretty damn close though
October 28th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
might be true. I wouldn’t know, cuz I think both shows suck ass.
/waits for it…
October 28th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Then who were those people bitching about the word God in the pledge of alliegence, the 10 commandments on public property, and everybody who gets their panties in a wad over Christmas decorations? Pretty sure they’re on the left there bud.
/also just sayin’
October 28th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

October 28th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Everything else you said I agreed with except this. Is lil Jimmy Horowitz really going to get that offended if there’s a Christmas tree alongside a minora (spelling sucks) at the capital? I’m not demanding that people say “merry christmas” to me instead of “Happy holidays” though.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
The war on Christmas/happy holidays was pretty right winged.

TBL = Rabid Anti-Dentite…
/next thing you know they’ll have their own schools!!!!

si.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
who likes dentists anyway?
October 28th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Nobody is demanding you say merry Christmas. When 95% of the US population celebrates Christmas is seems pretty stupid for a company to forbid their employees from saying “Merry Christmas” as was the case.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
What do you call a guy who couldn’t get into medical school? A DENTIST!!
They’re almost as bad as the blacks and Jews.
/that’s from seinfeld. Don’t kill me.

October 28th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
I think you all know how I feel on Seinfeld and Curb. I think Seinfeld was more consistently funny, but the Top 10 Curb episodes would stack up pret-ty, pret-ty, pret-TAY good against Seinfeld’s Top 10.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Now I could be wrong, but my understanding is that there is no white out for OSU (hence only 1 this year), and these shirts were from the Iowa game. The story is just so stupid it took a while to make the “news”, thanks Foxnews.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Dude. The first three seasons of Curb were better than Seinfeld seasons 8 & 9, which are almost unwatchable. Comedies tend to lose their freshness after five seasons or so. Seinfeld made through season 7, which is something of an accomplishment.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I went from not liking Tim Tebow to really liking him. You know why? Because everytime he says God Bless or anything else that’s religious, he saying a big FUCK YOU to the people who think its okay not to be religious, but get offended when someone is. AND ITS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACES.
What’s next with you people? Are you going to shut down churches because you get offended when they are in your neighborhoods? What else do you want? This is a serious question. You got your wish with taking religion out of school (thats understandable) but you keep on and keep on. People aren’t allowed to pray to themselves in certain places without you getting your feelings hurt. You’re not going to be happy until there is no religion allowed in this country. Its okay for you to believe (or not to believe) but when someone has a different belief system seperate from yours, you get pissed off and “offended.” Well you know what? FUCK YOU. I really hope you’re offended by that.
I hate the fact that I put my life on the line in the Marines for people with your fucked up views. You want to preach tolerance but you’re some of the least tolerant people I know. Its supposed to be a free country but I guess the only time it is is when you agree with it. If it doesnt fit your views its a bad thing. Shove your anti relgious rhetoric up your fucking asses!
/obviously not religious but sick of this shit that its okay to be religious as long as you dont see it at all
October 28th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
im out for tonight and maybe ill get banned. who knows.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
pretty ridiculous considering it isn’t even a random design and represents the helmet stripe.
/fuck people.
//lol religions

The first three seasons of Curb were better than Seinfeld seasons 8 & 9, which are almost unwatchable.
and Seinfeld seasons 3 through 7 were maybe the 5 year run of a comedy ever, so what’s your point? I said they are both great, and hard to pick a favorite
October 28th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Way late…
Or as we used to say in law school: so open-minded that you’re close-minded.

@TexasFan
Good discussion on tolerance, with a subtle side-dish of hypocrisy. Maybe part of the reason “those people” with their “fucked up views” take those positions is to piss you off enough to write a giant wall of text on a semi-sports related blog. E-rage is so tasty.
Or maybe they just have a different opinion on religion promoted by governmental bodies.
