BCS Standings: Texas Up to No. 2; Oregon, the Most Dangerous Team in the Country, Sits at 8th
College Football November 2nd. 2009, 1:00pm
It’s too bad there isn’t a BCS playoff, right? If one existed – forgive the pipe dream – Oregon would be a sexy underdog to capture an eight or 16-team playoff. After the Ducks destroyed the Trojans Saturday night in Autzen – the worst loss off Pete Carroll’s tenure in Troy – the media predictably swooned. These aren’t the same Ducks who were butchered in Boise in September. Here’s a tremendous stat that shows the team’s progress:
Sept. 3 at Boise State – 0 first downs in the 1st half.
Oct. 31 vs. USC – 31 first downs, 613 yards of offense.
And now, the bad news – even if Oregon wins its final three games (not a lock at Arizona or vs. rival Oregon State), the best it can do is the Rose Bowl. There’s no way that all seven undefeated teams lose by the end of the regular season. USC, obviously, is toast. That’s two losses. One more to the magical third defeat!
It has become crystal clear that Texas will play Alabama/Florida in the BCS title game. Worst-case scenario for the BCS – Alabama loses to LSU this weekend. LSU beats Florida in the SEC title game. Would 1-loss LSU leapfrog unbeaten Iowa, Cincy, TCU and Boise State to play Texas for the title?
The rest of the BCS Standings:
1 Florida 8-0
2 Texas 8-0 – It is becoming increasingly difficult to envision a scenario in which Texas loses in the regular season. The Big 12 North is such a dumpster fire that mediocre Nebraska could sneak into the Big 12 title game.
3 Alabama 8-0
4 Iowa 9-0 - How pissed will the Big 10 be if the SEC winner plays Texas for the National title and the Hawkeyes are unbeaten? Will the Big 10 – which doesn’t even have a conference championship – get behind a playoff?
5 Cincinnati 8-0 - Toughest game left – Dec. 5 at 1-loss Pittsburgh, which is 13th in the BCS standings.
6 TCU 8-0 - Toughest game left – Nov. 14 vs. 1-loss Utah, which is 14th in the BCS standings.
7 Boise State 8-0 – Still have Nevada (5-3) and Idaho (7-2) on the schedule, so the Broncos are probably the least likely of the seven unbeatens to remain so.
8 Oregon 7-1 – Think Rose Bowl. Opponent? It’ll be Penn State, Ohio State, or Iowa. Gun-to-head guess, we’d say Penn State.
9 LSU 7-1
10 Georgia Tech

if Penn State wins out, Iowa can lose a game and still go to the Rose Bowl.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:05 pm
2004 Auburn has no sympathy. Also, the Big 10 has been one of the biggest roadblocks to a playoff, so no way they hop on board.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
This would be awesome.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Or maybe this stat shows the tremendous difference between Boise State and USC’s defense.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
This will not be a tough game. TCU will rout Utah at home.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:07 pm
has boise tried to get in an adult conference? if they haven’t, they should
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:07 pm
RE cougar
I would have to guess 34 years old
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Iowa looked utterly craptastic. I think they’re the surest team to lose at least one, out of those 8 (obviously prior to the SEC Champ game).
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Damn, I didnt realize the season was already over, bummer.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:09 pm
They would love to go to the Pac-10, but the Pac-10 won’t have them. The rumor is that they will join the Mountain West in a few years. I think that would benefit both Boise and the conference.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:09 pm
I would have to guess 34 years old
and one kid, and one recent divorce.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:09 pm
All I know is my team is 4-4 and I’m thrilled. Just two more wins for bowl eligibility.
Also, not sure I would say that Boise crushed Oregon in September. Oregon looked terrible, but the final score was only 19-8. It was a sloppy game all around.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:09 pm
and if a 1-loss team goes to the title game over Iowa? could still happen. how much would Ala/UF drop with a loss in SEC title game?
/computer geek want to step up?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
I hope so.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
and one new chest
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:11 pm
but the Pac-10 won’t have them.
3 good teams is too many for them. Any more, and it’s hard to keep USC propped up like that.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:11 pm
That would be a resounding yes. The human voters have shown that they hate Iowa ranking them 7th. I can’t imagine a scenario where Iowa will be rnaked ahead of them unless they beat down Ohio State by two or more touchdowns. Its obvious that Iowa’s near meltdowns against N. Iowa and Arkansas State and official aided win against Indiana is killing them.
After all that I don’t see LSU winning in Bama with Jordan Jeffries sitting back there waiting to be sacked.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Boise’s like Notre Dame in that their current situation makes it easier for them to make it into the BCS than if they were to charge (or join) conferences…sure they’ll never make it to the title game until they start schedule better OOC but they can still run the table in the horrible WAC and every now and then collect the huge BCS paycheck
The NCAA should swap them with Washington State in the Pac-10…UW can still schedule them for the Apple Cup
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Only if the AP Poll was in the BCS formula.
Another reason the BCS can’t determine the champion correctly…
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
You guys realize they voted on a playoff just this offseason, not a single conference voted yes. Definitely all the B10’s fault, obviously.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Doesn’t matter about Iowa, they’re losing a game! They always hit that point where they stumble. It’s coming soon.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 pm
so has the pac-10…why do they get off so easy?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Maybe because Texas, Boise and TCU play no one ranked higher than 71st the rest of the way? Excluding Utah for TCU, of course.
Winning by 18 is hardly craptastic. Throwing 5 picks, yes. But I challenge you to piss into 40 MPH winds. See if you don’t get wet.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:14 pm
No one member is going to vote yes until behind the scenes they’re all in unanimous agreement. It would make them look weak if there was dissension.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:15 pm
When were they last 9-0? Oh… that’s right. Never.
The last time they “stumbled” was in 2002… IN THE SECOND GAME OF THE SEASON.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:15 pm
iowa squeaked out a win this saturday. final score 42-24.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Nah, you get equal blame as the Pac 10 and the Rose Bowl.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Florida won’t be able to hold a top 3 spot if they lose to Alabama. They play Vandy and FIU in 2 of the next 4. Their computer numbers will take a huge hit. Bama has an outside shot of staying there with LSU and Auburn still on the schedule.
Iowa is also only 11 points ahead of Cincinnati in the coaches poll. Another unimpressive Iowa win drops them. I think there is about a 60 percent chance a one loss Alabama or a one loss LSU passes them.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Damn, I didnt realize the season was already over, bummer.
If Texas and Bama/Florida win out, it won’t matter what any other team does.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm
They’re still going down…That is all…
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
winning by 18 is only telling 1/4 the story too.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
They don’t, but he asked specifically about the Big 10.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
id be more worried about iowa jumping texas than lsu jumping iowa. right now is the worst iowa can possibly be ranked in the polls if they win out. they are obviously going to move up in the human polls where texas is going to keep dropping in the computers.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Posted this yesterday but worth repeating, there is a very good chance that not a single Texas opponent finishes the season ranked. But of course Iowa/Cincinatti/et al aren’t the worthy ones…
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:20 pm
WAIT! You mean Louisiana Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP, and Central Florida aren’t ranked? I don’t believe it! Mack Brown thought he scheduled up this year.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Let’s see… the whole story. Iowa was down 21-7 at half and looked like shit in the first half. Stanzi threw five interceptions, four of them into the wind and 3 of them in 4 pass attempts. If not for a Tyler Sash interception return from God, the Hawkeyes would have been down 28-7. Instead, they were down 21-14, benefited from a botched review call and then proceeded to throw up 27 unanswered points.
They won the game.
Happy?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:21 pm
coop: Iowa is sitting in the same spot Auburn was sitting in so many years ago. No matter how many games they won, they could never unseat USC and OU from the top 2 spots.
Going unbeaten isn’t enough for the teams below the Top 3. They have to hope two of them lose at least one game.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:21 pm
@coop I think Oklahoma will finish ranked, but I get your point. I was thinking this morning that the Sooners should have just made Landry their guy if they knew Bradford was so easily susceptible to reinjury. I feel if he had another two weeks of snaps as the number one guy they would have won that game.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:23 pm
/important part
//spencer would be defending tOSU if they came back to beat Purdue in similar fashion.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:23 pm
not really…because they won.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Sadly, I agree. But the Hawkeyes have to go unbeaten first to have a beef.
There is, however only ONE 9-0 team in the country. It’d be nice if the AP voters put that team ahead of a certain team that LOST a fucking game this year.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:24 pm
get outta here with that noise.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:24 pm
BFFredo/cgb, I think Iowa/Cinci are totally fraudulent, but if you’re going to question schedule or conference strength as a reason to downgrade a team, then its time to include the Fraudhorns in that conversation.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I don’t see LSU beating Alabama. Not this time.
/how the Hell did LSU get Alabama and Florida coming off bye weeks?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:25 pm
HA!
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:30 pm
how the Hell did LSU get Alabama and Florida coming off bye weeks?
how the hell did LSU get into the title game a couple of years ago with 2 losses? you win some, you lose some.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:30 pm
so has the pac-10…why do they get off so easy?
Because they have better looking girls.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Will the Big 10 – which doesn’t even have a conference championship – get behind a playoff?
Remember what that guy you interviewed from the BTN say about this? No way this happens. The conference isn’t that strong right now and so potentially ruining the chances of someone like Iowa making it to a major BCS bowl because of a playoff game would only hurt the teams involved and the conference.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Just pointing it out, not using it as an excuse. It’s not like Jordan Jefferson wasn’t looking like shit if Florida played the week before.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Oh, and where’s Jay V with his “Georgia Tech won’t finish in the top 25″ prediction again?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
that should say botched review”s” – refs took 14 points off the board.
Iowa fans in my office love talking shit but none of them will take Iowa straight up in the bowl game against a to be determined oppponent.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
That’s not what I was trying to do. I agree that the Big 12 is down and Texas scheduled horrible out of conference opponents. All three are undefeated I put Texas ahead of them because they have more experience, depth and talent.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Oh, and where’s Jay V with his “Georgia Tech won’t finish in the top 25″ prediction again?
In front of Brad Lidge’s house with a pitchfork, and several thousand of his angriest friends.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:38 pm
I will piss my pants laughing if Iowa loses at Northwestern this weekend. Fingers crossed!
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I think Iowa/Cinci are totally fraudulent, but if you’re going to question schedule or conference strength as a reason to downgrade a team, then its time to include the Fraudhorns in that conversation.
Oh there’s no doubts there. The problem remains the same: this is the set-up college football has. Until there’s a way for teams to settle it on the field, there won’t be a way for teams like Iowa or Cincinnati to get ahead of the Texas.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:40 pm
I like Boise’s chances of staying undefeated more than TCU, Cincinnati, or Bama’s.
SEC teams manage to screw themselves out of BCS games more than any other conference. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if Bama loses to LSU and Florida loses to Bama in the title game.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:40 pm
somebody is getting a little too big for his britches
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Oregon got screwed a couple of years ago too when they went 10-1… a great example of why college football flat-out sucks.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:43 pm
you must have iowa ahead of alabama then. iowa unlike bama has been relevant the last 10 years. they also produce more nfl players than bama so i will give them the talent edge.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Spare your Depends purchase. The game is in Iowa City. The schedule is just one Google search away for the lazy.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:43 pm
not happening.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Iowa fans have somehow become more delusional than O$U fans
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Darnell Autry is not walking through that door.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:47 pm
why say that? the facts are that they are 9-0, have played a top 10 sos. who cares if they win ugly? why shouldn’t they be clamoring for an opportunity to play in the NT game?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:47 pm
it’s the corn that makes them retarded.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I assume you mean me, and I’ll tell you that I offered to wager on that with him before the season started, and never got a response. For the record, I also predicted 10-2 with an Orange Bowl berth for the Jackets before the season as well. All of that is verifiable.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Iowa is paying for the sins of OSU, fair or not.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:48 pm
just do everyone a favor and beat Penn State.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:49 pm
iowa has beaten florida, lsu, and south carolina in the last 5 years
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:50 pm
One of these is not like the others.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Thank you, Sparty.
When your team goes 9-0 for the first time in school history and there’s a chance you might get left out of the title game, I guess “delusional” is the only retort you’ll receive. Never once have Hawkeye fans said we’re the best team in the country while beating our chests.
We just want our shot. Because seasons like this don’t come around every year. For Ohio State, they come around more frequently.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:50 pm
There’s probably one thing we can all agree on:
USC is the best two-loss team in the history of college football.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:50 pm
What bowl game did Iowa go to last year? What bowl game did Bama go to?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pm
And that has to do what with this year’s team?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Oh and cgb when I said “you’re” I didn’t mean you specifically, I mean people/media in general. In closing, Texas = Fraud.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Jersey wouldn’t agree with this.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
please God I hope for once to be called delusional.
apparently it helps if you are Southern Cal.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Michigan beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl recently, whoop dee f’ing doo.
Facts are facts and yes they should be clamoring, I just don’t want the Big 10 to be embarassed on a national stage yet again. The conference is mediocre this year, everyone can see that. You can live with one close call, but the games against NIU, Ark St. and Indiana were terrible.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:53 pm
terrific question. iowa went to the capital one bowl where they beat south carolina 31-10. alabama went to the sugar where they lost to utah 31-17.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:53 pm
oh, it’s fair for big ten teams to have to bear that burden…maybe if yall weren’t such sorry pieces of shit, you would’ve been able to beat OSU.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Jersey wouldn’t agree with this.
exactly. Unless you lost two games in the final minute, we won’t slurp you here.
who’s too big for their britches? Is it me?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I’m loving the hate on the Longhorns schedule. The only team in the top 7 of the BCS not to schedule an FCS team. If only they had scheduled Texas State at home and needed a blocked field goal to beat them – then they would be good!
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
every conference is!!!
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:55 pm
I agree with both of these. however, due to the inherent flaw of the poll/bowl system, Iowa was not ranked high enough in the preseason to justify a ranking higher than Florida, Texas, or Bammer. the fans can clamor all they want, but unless two of those three BCS teams lose in the next 5 weeks, Iowa has no shot of sniffing the Title game.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:55 pm
iowa has wins this year over 3 teams currently ranked ahead of any team alabama has played
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:55 pm
clown- Texas is the best team. 100% sincere. just said it on a similar thread at my site.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:56 pm
The right answer is Iowa went to some bowl no one outside Iowa or SC fans remember, and most college football fans remember Bama went to a BCS bowl (even if they lost).
Thus, your assertion that Iowa is more relevant than Bama is patently false.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:56 pm
iowa has beaten florida, lsu, and south carolina in the last 5 years
They sure did.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:58 pm
agree, unfortunate truth for them.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Oops.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:58 pm
More so looking at the conference schedule, clown. The Big XII is miserable this year. There’s no doubting that. As down as the Big Ten is, we don’t have the Iowa State’s of the conference winning six games because the other teams are dropping games to them.
Nebraska is terrible. Kansas is awful. Missouri is too. The North is like an FCS division. The South? Oklahoma doesn’t have two of it’s best players and Okie State lost their best player. Texas is so far head and shoulders above the rest of them that they may as well be playing FCS teams.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Clown, its not that the sked was that bad, everyone plays a few creampuffs. Its that the entire B12 is a grease fire, just terrible teams.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:59 pm
sparty’s tearing it up today! Pete Carrol and Southern Cal gets all the benefit of the doubt because of the last 7 years. and, I think I’ve seen these three conference referred to as “down” in this thread alone: Big 10, Big XII, and the SEC. newsflash – it’s week 10 and there’s no absolutely dominant team or conference!
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:59 pm
iowa destroyed an sec team in tampa.
bama got its ass handed to them by a mountain west team in new orleans.
what was your point again?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:00 pm
USC is the best two-loss team in the history of college football.
Until this Saturday, when LSU grabs their 2nd loss.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:00 pm
last year everyone bitched (myself included) that the Big 12 didn’t play defense. Well, Texas is playing lights out defense in the Big 12 this year.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:01 pm
dont sleep on baylor this year
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:04 pm
because Michigan State suckcs donkey balls, i can be much more objective now.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Nice of you to bring that up after RGIII got hurt. You certainly were quiet about it when they beat Wake.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
If anyone actually thinks Iowa is a top-5 team they are insane. They have to be the worst 9-0 team in the history of college football. They are going to get creamed if they play Oregon in the Rose. In fact. Please make this happen. OSU loses to Penn State, beats Iowa. Iowa goes through and gets smashed. I’d rather watch Terrelle Pryor throw it like a woman for 5 hours than watch Iowa play a meaningful game.
Fixed for accuracy. They have a top-10 defense and the best DT combo in the nation. The offense, on the other hand, makes Iowa look like the 2001 Miami Hurricanes.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
The only team in the top 7 of the BCS not to schedule an FCS team.
Please… Just because they schedules a bunch of 1(b)s and no 1(c)s doesn’t make their schedule less sucky.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:07 pm
OK and if you had made that statement two weeks ago Alabama would have a win over #4 VT. The point is those statistics change week by week and are meaningless until the season is over.
Because they’ve looked like world beaters since Robert Griffin went down
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I love watching their defense play. Muschamp is such a badass. I still think they will have serious issues playing a defense like Bama or Florida. Against OU they looked terrible on offense and OU’s defense is a lot like Bama and Florida. Texas needs to run the ball better and I don’t see them doing that. A Texas-Bama/Florida final could be a very low-scoring affair.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:07 pm
blah, blah, blah, Iowa hate, blah, blah…
What were you saying?
Oh, and Nebraska lost to the Cyclones. A team that Iowa put up 35 points on and held to 3.
/get off my lawn
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
i remember hearing this being said about 2002 OSU.
please, they deserve it just as much as anyone else.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
who wouldnt?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:09 pm
What the hell do you mean where am I? It’s not like I’ve disappeared. I never back down from my wrong predictions…yep, I thought it. I have been surprised that they have had the success that they have had. Definitely has been a nice season for you guys.
I also still believe the following, and will wager with you on it: at least 2 of the following 3 will happen, and, personally I think all 3 will happen:
1—they will lose to UGA
2—they will lose to Clemson in the ACC Champ game
3—they will lose to ??? (Notre Dame?) in the Gator Bowl.
And whether any of that happens, I do know this fo sho: if you give up 31 points to Vanderbilt, you are not one of the 10 best teams in the country.
And I will never wager on a banning, that’s just efinn stupid. I’d rather wager a t-shirt from Pat’s vs. a t-shirt from The Varsity, or something like that.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:09 pm
i would rank 1 florida 2 texas 3 boise 4 oregon
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Exactly.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
We should still rank USC above Iowa, right Gods? Am I right? Maybe we should put Vandy there too because they play in the SEC? Or wait… how about, if Utah only loses by 3 to TCU but because they might have more talent, we should put them above them too. Am I right?
Oh, and if Georgia inks a 5 star recruit for 2031, we should rank them in the top 25, too.
PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR CRITERIA FOR “TOP TEAM”.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Why is Diesel the only Big 10 grad here that doesn’t have his head stuck up his ass when it comes to Big 10 football?
Sorry for mixing up the fucking Northwestern game being in Iowa. Like I give a shit. I would also care more about Iowa beating a ranked team if said ranked team WASN’T A BIG 10 TEAM.
Why can’t teams schedule some games in between bowl games? Half these schools have over six weeks off before they play their bowl game. Couldn’t, let’s say, an Iowa play a game against a decent opponent before they go to the Rose Bowl and get clobbered by Oregon? The school would make a shit load of money if they scheduled one out-of-conference big game between December and January.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:11 pm
I have no idea what this means except that Bama fans are dumb.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:12 pm
you are fucking retarded
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:12 pm
whatever criteria hurts iowa’s case is fine by me!
/pouring salt in the wound
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:12 pm
it’s good to have clown back
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:13 pm
i love these comments during college football. i envision a royal rumble in real life. not sure who would be coming off the top ropes, or what allegiances would form, but i assume they would be along conference lines
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:13 pm
+367,902
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:13 pm
And this means Iowa is badass how? Look, as long as Iowa wins they can be ranked in the top whatever. But if you think that Iowa has a chance in hell against a team like Florida, Texas, Bama, Oregon or USC you are a homer. They aren’t that good. They beat a Penn State team that is weak. They beat Arizona. Bravo. The toughest team they will face this year will be OSU in Columbus, and the Buckeye QB can’t hit the broad side of a barn. They nearly lost to Northern Iowa and Arkansas State at home. This team reminds me of every other Big 10 team of the last 3+ years. There is always one team that runs through the league and puts up crazy defensive stats. THey then play a USC/Florida/LSU type of team and get waxed. Why will this year be any different? Is it Iowa awesome QB? Aweosme RB? Great WRs?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:13 pm
they do, they’re called conference championship games.

Then don’t say uninformed things you don’t give a shit about.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:14 pm
i would rank 1 florida 2 texas 3 boise 4 oregon
And you would be wrong. But whatever….
Please… Just because they scheduled a bunch of 1(b)s and no 1(c)s doesn’t make their schedule less sucky.
I have no idea what this means except that Bama fans are dumb.
Please let Bama see Texas in the NC game, please.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:15 pm
please…i hate all the big 10 heauxmeaux’s more than i hate the SEC guys. i wouldn’t want anything to do with one of those distasteful PSU, michigan or iowa fans who thinks that it’s all ohio state’s fault their teams suck.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Hey Spencer… help me out here. What did most people say in 2002 about that Fiesta Bowl that was played?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:16 pm
SC: Where does USC being ranked ahead of USC enter the discussion? USC is down this year, but if Iowa plays USC in any bowl game I would bet a large sum of money that they would lose by 14+. Iowa isn’t that good. I am not insulting your mother. I’m not demeaning your family. I am simply saying that this Iowa team is not one of the best 5 teams in the country. That’s all.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Name the terms.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:17 pm
sec honks pretend to forget their losing record against the big 10 the last 10 years. and they are a mere .500 the last 5 years.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Do you know how many NFL players were on that OSU team?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Uninformed because I looked at ESPN’s schedule and there was just a picture of Northwestern with no AT sign?
I can’t wait until Ohio State (who I despise) kick’s your team’s ass and you have to eat crow. Shove your team’s cream puff schedule up your ass, SC.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Have to agree with this. I, actually, watched a good portion of the Iowa game this weekend and am trying to find a way to get that time back. What a hideous team. Yes, I realize I will probably get some clever remark about Georgia being shitty but it is what it is. Iowa is a decent team taking advantage of a wonderfully shitty schedule. Good for them.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Congrats on all of the Outback bowls.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
you mean that ohio state team that had something like 26 kids drafted on it?
i don’t see how a comparison between the luckeyes and this iowa team can be made.
/but yea, they said OSU had no chance…miami had an all-time great team with NFL’ers everywhere and OSU just squeaked by…i see what you’re getting at, i just wanted to be an asshole
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Utah backed out of playing Texas last year so they could beat the shit out of the Tide in the Sugar. The Utes are smart.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
False. Iowa beat a Zook coached UF team after the 2003 season. They lost to a Meyer coached UF team after the 2005 season.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
They beat a Penn State team that is weak.
I don’t think they are. I’m a homer, but I really think they win out and win a BCS game.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:20 pm
you cant possibly think bama loses by less than 3 tds to florida
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I, actually, watched a good portion of the Iowa game this weekend
I’m sorry.

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:21 pm
This is what has happened the last few years. Insert B10 team runs through the league beating other percieved good teams from within the league. Insert B10 team will then site wins against other B10 teams as evidence that they are stout. Insert B10 team then reaches #1 or #2 in the polls, plays a better team and gets waxed. Last year it was PSU, before that it was OSU. This year it is Iowa’s turn.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Georgia is shitty
/so is VT
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Miz – there are conferences who don’t have conference championship games… and even with conference championships the schools still have 4-6 weeks off from playing football.
Would one Saturday in December with some huge college football games be horrible? Take some of the bowl game pairings and mix them up. Like the teams in the Rose Bowl split up and take the teams playing in the Fiesta Bowl. I don’t know, just an idea.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Nope. But I bet it’s more than the 2009 versions of Texas, Alabama and Florida.
For the record… Krenzel, Michael Jenkins, Nick Mangold (a freshman that didn’t play), Alex Stepanovich, Quinn Pitcock, Will Smith, A.J. Hawk, Mike Doss and Will Allen were the NFL players.
Other than Doss, how many of these players have really been “good” in the NFL? And does it matter? Jason White was “good” in college and sucked in the NFL. His Oklahoma teams still won games.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
you mean like the #18 ranked Arizona Wildcats?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
My team sucks for a plethora of reasons.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
that’s cute. inaccurate, but cute considering that’s happened all of once.
in 2007 you fail to mention all the toher “top” teams in the country collectively shitting themselves. and last year, PSU was no. 1? really? that happened?
so what you’re saying is that you should take away the big 10’s auto bid, right? pretty much.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Utah backed out of playing Texas last year so they could beat the shit out of the Tide in the Sugar.
You mean when Paul Kruger ran wild on a Andre Smith-less Tide?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
how do you not mention chris gamble or kenny peterson?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
I offered him a wager for large sums of money when he said this right after we lost to Miami. I got no response.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
C’mon, the kids are taking finals. You have to remember that they are just students who play a game, after all.
/sincere
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Not really clear on what those were, but ok, that’ll work.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm
I would never bet “large sums of money” with someone who rarely posts.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm
It can be worked around, I assure you.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:27 pm

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:27 pm
big 10 doesnt even allow night games in november. good luck getting them to extend the season.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:27 pm
College basketball has no idea what you are talking about.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:28 pm
well, I watched Florida struggle to beat a hideous Miss St team. i guess that means they shouldn’t be top 5.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:28 pm
why don’t they just play games in the spring, too, sportsgal? they have 8 months off, would 4 games in 8 months be too much to ask.
your idea is dumb. the season is over, the bowl game is a reward.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:28 pm
I post frequently during the months of the NBA playoffs, fwiw. Not that that was my point. Point was that there was never a response. Now there is. K thanks.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Does anyone know what the ABC 8:00 games are? I know Nebraska-OU is one (which means NEB will get housed on national television…agai). Is Penn State-Ohio State an 8 p.m. game?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Lefty:
It’s a Tony Luke’s Pronto gift pack (a $28 value) vs. a Varsity t-shirt (a $16 value).
And to be clear, the bet is TWO of those 3 to happen…not all 3. And by further way of clarification, are we counting a loss in the ACCC to anyone other than Clemson as favorable to me?
Finally, email TBL and tell him to give you my email, and we’ll handle the rest of the details off-blog.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Is Penn State-Ohio State an 8 p.m. game?
3:30. no night games after October for Big Ten teams. i’m guessing they’re concerned with hypothermia or something.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:31 pm
the long layoffs are justified by exams and spreading out the bowl games. it’s a retarded justification, but that’s what it is. and, I completely understand that all conferences don’t have a championship…that’s their fault. the Big 10 has a 6+ week layoff for teams playing in BCS games. again, that’s their fault. add another team and get a conference championship. or, be like the PAC 10 and have two bye weeks.
you mean, like conference championship games, right?
this would be kinda like a playoff, no?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Me, SC, and Sparty vs the world… because lots of people hear are managing to find ways to discredit a team that is undefeated and have beaten 3 top 25 BCS teams… dumb.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:33 pm
I didn’t know that. Seems kind of odd to me.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Good deal. We’ll say any loss in the ACC Championship Game goes in your column, not just Clemson.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:33 pm
notre dame sucks.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:33 pm
They are still better than Georgia. Georgia is such a pile of dogshit.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:34 pm
seems kinda stupid to me.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:34 pm
This is a good take on Urban Meyer “punishing” Spikes. Meyer is such a prick.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:35 pm
shocking
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Me, SC, and Sparty vs the world
You would have a better chance than Iowa does of running the table.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:35 pm
In all honesty, I never even saw your offer, or I would have responded with what I said today. I was posting from my phone that night if I remember correctly, so I probably just popped in solely to make that comment and semi-gloat.
///won a lot of money on the Hurricanes that night
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Your qb sucks.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Early spread on the OSU/PSU game has it as a pick ‘em. Weird.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Are you fucking kidding me? I get it, you think my idea is dumb. But your sarcastic response? Congratulations, you’ve just received the day’s RETARD award.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Jay V – I emailed TBL, and hopefully he’ll get back to me. If not, you can leave a comment at SC’s blog, and I can get your email addy that way.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:37 pm
osu is better but its in psu where pryor is very likely to shit the bed early and put osu in a hole. they will struggle to come back and eventually tie it and there is your pick em.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:37 pm
What the hell is this about?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Was there anywhere in my statement that I said Iowa wasn’t a top 5 team? I simply said I want about 2+ hours of my Saturday back because it was hideous to watch. If it makes you feel any better, I would also like the 3+ hours that I spent watching Florida butt rape Georgia back, as well. For the record: I think Iowa is good team. A great team, no but solid nonetheless.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:40 pm
id bet PSU on this game…OSU has no healthy/good RB’s and has pryor, who’ll prolly gift state penn a couple INT’s.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:41 pm
And we haven’t even gotten BBoB’s post for today. This thread was more venomous than I thought it would be.
I blame myself.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I gave that out to Duder about an hour ago SG.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 pm
sorry
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Just not our year football-wise is it, Spencer. Your Bucks are down and my Neb/UGA combo is in the shitter. Though your Browns make my Falcons look like world beaters

these aren’t MY browns…MY browns were stolen from me by Crack n’ Crab Cakes Emporium*.
*city formerly known as Baltimore
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:45 pm
well, you blockquoted gotg’s comment, which stated people were insane if they thought Iowa was top 5. you then started by saying you agreed.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:46 pm
so…is there another post going on that we should be aware of?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:47 pm
So you’re saying Texas is this years OSU? Then I agree.
I align with no one, PSU is superior to everyone in every way.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:47 pm
these aren’t MY browns…MY browns were stolen from me by Crack n’ Crab Cakes Emporium*.
Ahhh… the place of my birth.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
superior in what? bitching about QB ruining sons of legendary coaches is the only thing that comes to mind, and even then, FSU is prolly better. again.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Nope, not at all.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Dammit I hate defending those pig fucking Iowans, but just because “I watched Iowa this weekend and they looked bad”, ummm, what top team hasnt had several ugly/bad weeks this year?
I mean aside from USC, they’ve been stellar every week.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Shit, copied the whole thing. I meant to start at the “They are going to get creamed part.” Oh well, shit happens. I retract my question.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Crack n’ Crab Cakes
you have your choice of soup or a side salad with that. today’s soup is broccoli cheddar.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:51 pm
ooo…broccoli cheddar!
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Then don’t defend them.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Can I get a caesar, light on the dressing?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:54 pm
french onion > broccoli cheddar
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:55 pm
Mangold started at center from game 3 on, as a true freshman.
You missed about 17 other guys that played in the NFL on OSU’s 2002 team. Chris Gamble would be a very noted miss among the group…
Let me know if Iowa has that kind of talent this year. Haven’t seen it. Saturday’s game made me bitter due to the replay official’s lack of competence. IU quit when Iowa scored twice in 2 plays. No excuse for that either.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
true…especially if they use gouda for the top of the french onion soup.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Can I get a caesar, light on the dressing?
of course, but there’s a 50 cent upcharge for the ceasar. Do you still want that?
/don’t know if I get more annoyed by the petty up charge when places do this, or the fact that the waiter thinks i might change my mind over 50 cents
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Lobster bisque (though not a soup) > Everything. Any soup that ends in cheddar is not high on my hit parade.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I tried to look up the ratio of pig to cow in Iowa with no luck. Pretty sure that they’re cow fuckers.
/I didn’t grow up there
//I only went to school there
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
oh man…lobster bisque is the absolute tits. i would chug a gallon of that per day if i could.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:58 pm
SG-
Arizona is a Pac-10 team…….
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Couldn’t agree more. Just give me the damn salad. I read the menu and saw that it is going to cost me an extra 50 cents. Although, I guess there are those that will not go through with it because of the extra 50 cents.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm
crab bisque > lobster bisque
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm
@Wally – Stanzi might be better than Krenzel. And both schools still send more OL to the pros than anyone else.
Does it matter? This whole equating college talent to pro talent doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to me. See Gallery, Robert; Ferguson, D’Brickashaw; Russell, JaMarcus; Smith, Alex; GHOLSTON, VERNON.
Or… Brady, Tom.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Absolutely. Especially if I have ordered a cocktail or a good beer. Obviously if I’m willing to pay the insane markup on booze, I’ll spring for the 50 cents on the salad.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:02 pm
i already pointed that out to her. she has been speechless since.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
If you’re ever in ATL, go to Bones and get their lobster bisque. That shit is like liquid velvet. Just amazing.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
C’mon, if we are in Baltimore, the soup of the day is also going to be crab chowder or crab bisque!
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
crab bisque > lobster bisque
maryland crab soup > anything that ends in “bisque”
/homer’d
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
did you think any of these 3 would be good in the nfl? i doubt it.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
brady was a beast at michigan and at the NFL…how does that not have any correllation?
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:05 pm

If you’re ever in ATL, go to Bones and get their lobster bisque. That shit is like liquid velvet. Just amazing
I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:07 pm
My wife and I are huge foodies, so for birthdays we go out to eat at a nice place as opposed to getting each other gifts. Bones is our #1 spot. My mouth is watering just thinking about that place.

November 2nd, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Couldn’t agree more. The service is the best I’ve ever seen and the food is top-notch. I would reccomend that place to anyone.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:11 pm

As someone who is Frecnc (mom’s side) I get so pissed when I hear this stuff. Without France this country doesn’t exist. Get over it.

the fuck you talkin’ ’bout, boy? wal-mart didn’t come from france.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I will be honest, I don’t find much difference in the high end steakhouses. I have eaten at Bones, Chops, Ruth’s Chris and Morton’s to name a few and I think the are pretty much even. They all have the same menu. What separates them, for me, are the sides and salads.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Went to Rathbun Steak three weeks ago. Very disappointed. Food was good, but nothing mind blowing and the service was not up to par. Bones crushes them.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Without France this country doesn’t exist. Get over it.
It works both ways, cowboy.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:14 pm

November 2nd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
That, and I’m with GotG that the service at Bones is without equal.

All you racists should try Justin’s. MTV told me it’s the best the ATL has to offer.

You have to be the oldest MTV viewer besides Kurt Loder.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I’ve eaten at Bones, and it was damn delicious, but the best place I’ve eaten in ATL has to be Bacchanalia.

Try to be a food watcher. I’ll stare down other people’s dishes before I order to see if anything stands out.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I have to agree 100% with that. Morton’s was the worst of the bunch in my opinion and Ruth’s Chris is my favorite. However, Fogo de Chao is the best out there.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I’m not into haute cuisine. It does nothing for me, though Bacchanalia does win restaurant of the year often in ATL.

I cook my own steak on my own grill over charcoal like a fucking man. Sides available are beer and more meat.

November 2nd, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Different strokes. I think Fogo is a buffet for rich people and I hated it. Ruth’s was okay, but I was disappointed. I have not been to Morton’s, but I agree that most high-end steak places are the same. What is different about Bones for me is that they have the bisque and their service is fucking amazing. It is a focal point for them and they knock it out of the park.

November 2nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Agreed. In Philly, we have a locally-owned (by Brazillians) joint called Picancha. It’s basically Fogo, but at half the price. And it’s a BYOB.
BYOBs are pretty rare outside of Philly, eh? Man, half the rests. in town up here don’t have liqour licenses, including a boatload of really nice ones. Talk about the wine snobbery in many of those places…
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:32 pm

i should’ve been a chef too…what the fuck was i thinking?

Honestly, one of the best steaks that I have had in the ATL was at Rays on the River. Kind of surprising to be honest.

If you are ever in DC/Arlington – Ray’s the Steaks. Zero ambience, good wine, good sides, killer steak. Better than Ruths and Morton.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
It’s literally down the street from where I live. Haven’t tried it out yet.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
I have never had a bad meal there. Their location is pretty impressive and my office is right down the road so we have functions and what not there. I usually get seared tuna but I tried the steak one night and was very impressed.

Haven’t been to Ray’s the Steaks, yet. I do love the Palm though.

@Lefty – Since you are in that area – Laueberge Chez Francois. Great Falls, VA. Best. Meal. Ever. Period. Mad duckets though.

The process is what makes weed so good. The breaking up of the weed, the rolling it. The sitting around the living room shooting the breeze while smoking it. Ahh…I so miss college.
November 2nd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
or as i call it…business as usual.
