Movie Talk Tuesday and Patrick’s Big Announcement
Uncategorized July 3rd. 2007, 5:03pm[Update: Some places are reporting Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN TV and radio, and we'll be all over it Thursday. Also, we saw Transformers and it's incredibly awesome.]
Slight letdown folks – no movie talk Tuesday today. Can’t swing it. We’re struggling about which topic to go with, and with the holiday rapidly approaching, we must get in the car and beat the traffic. Fear not! We will, however, be pushing movie talk to Thursday this week. Apologies all around.
In addition, we will not be able to post this big announcement Dan Patrick has been hyping up for the last week. We’ve tried just about everyone we know over at the four-letter, and nobody seems to know. It’s as if this is a matter of national security. Our guess is he’s leaving ESPN, and that’s why it’s been so hush-hush. Some of you speculated via email that Olbermann is permanently leaving the show, and with the election about 15 months away, that certainly could be the case.
At any rate, feel free to discuss whatever happens here.

July 3rd, 2007 at 5:07 pm
Dan is out today.
Announcement coming later this week.
WTF

Transformers was far better than I would have ever expected. I’d recommend a view for TBL. Seeing as you guys are such big movie buffs and all.
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:14 pm
As a child of the 80’s (born in 1982) I’m wondering if I’m the only one who didn’t have Transformers or ever watched the cartoon (I was in the He-Man and then TMNT camps)
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:16 pm
Transformers in a mile…
My local market doesn’t air the first hour, but the online stream is hosted by Bob Valvano…
My guess yesterday might have been right — he’s off for the week
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:17 pm
TMNT was #1, but Transformers rocked. My question is this. From what I remember, Transformers were good guys, however, from the trailers I’ve seen, it seems as if they are evil in this movie. Am I correct?
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:20 pm
The Autobots are the good guys; the Decepticons were the bad guys…
Transformers just refers to the collective…
Man, the 1980s left a mark on me…
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:25 pm
I was also born in 82, and for whatever reason, I didn’t follow Transformers a whole lot as a kid. I was more into TMNT (the cartoon, not the movies), Thundercats and GI Joe. But I’ll still be seeing the movie tomorrow.
Are there Thundercats and/or GI Joe movies in the works now too? Is fiction truly dead?
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:37 pm
I loved the Transformers cartoon and animated movie. I would have liked to have seen this live-action Transformers movie. But when I heard Michael Bay was directing, my heart broke, for I knew that Michael Bay is a douche and I can never watch anymore of his films (I quit after “The Rock”).
I often ask my friends the same questions after they’ve finished watching a Michael Bay film: “Was it loud enough for you? I SAID, ‘WAS IT LOUD ENOUGH FOR YOU?’”
For those who love Michael Bay movies, I offer you this:

Decepticons! I love Transformers.
I went to college with a guy who worked on the movie and I’m trying to get some gear from him.
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:39 pm
How does a chevy cavalier turn into a 70ft robot? Cars are 50% plastic anyway.
Just b/c they can do a whole lot with CG doesn’t mean it should be done in my opinion.
On DP maybe Kieth’s taking over the show? His contract has to be due soon enough w/ MSNBC right?
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:41 pm
s1rweeze–Do you remember Silver Hawks?
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Holy cow, Silverhawks! I couldn’t think of the name of the show for the longest time and it was one of my favorites when I was little. All I remember is that they were in space and had a guy named Bluegrass.
Never got into Transformers or He-Man, or cartoons in general except for TMNT and Thundercats. Too busy watching Saved by the Bell or NBA Inside Stuff.
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
I remember in NY Transformers and Go-Bots were on at 4 and 4:30 on Channel 11….Transformers always rocked harded…the Go-BOts sucked…the kids who like Go-Bots were always the losers. The animated Transformers movie from the 80’s was a life altering experience…The return of Optimus Prime who was way cooler than Rodimus Prime….
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:06 pm
I loved boy cartoons like He-Man, GI Joe and Transformers, but I was more into Inspector Gadget, Jem and She-Ra. Did anyone watch the X-Men cartoon after school on Fox ?
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:10 pm
Inspector Gadget rocked. Piggy & Brain. The best was when he’d write with his gadget pen which happened to be on his middle finger.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Whoa, I totally forgot about Silverhawks. Time to fire up eMule.
sportsgal – the X-Men cartoon didn’t come NEAR the comics in terms of sheer awesomeness, but it may have had the best theme song ever.
Mozatta – Piggy? You mean Penny? I hated her and her stupidass book thing.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:16 pm
Ha ha ha! I never noticed his pen was on his middle finger! Man, what happened to the days when kids didn’t know what middle finger gestures really meant? I remember singing Ice Ice Baby in 6th grade and having absolutely NO IDEA what any of the terms in the song meant (i.e. 8 ball, dope fiends, etc)!
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:21 pm
I was a Voltron fan. I had all the figures and could assemble then into Voltron. They were made of metal and, when assembled, weighed about 5lbs which some pointy corners. That’s when toys were toys!
I watched an episode a couple of years ago and couldn’t understand for the life of me why I liked it as a kid. Too many quick cuts and seizure-inducing movements.
Watching Knight Rider as an adult was disenchanting, too. I lived for that show as a kid (I had a Knight Rider Big Wheels – not to be confused with Power Wheels). Watching episodes now made me sad and mildly uncomfortable.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Friggin Dan Patrick, what an ass…
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:24 pm
it was Pinky and the Brain…
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:24 pm
Man no mention of Voltron! Please tell me you guys watched Voltron!
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Pinky and the Brain was a cartoon about mice…which was funny…Penny and Brain were Inspector Gadget’s Niece and dog that followed him around and actully solved his mysterys while he bumbled around…also funny…
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:28 pm
ButtersBC I was born in 83 and all that shit was a part of my life.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:31 pm
I loved Voltron too…I remember one Christmas…I got all the Voltron lions and figures except Keith which was like the hot item at the time and then My older cousin..I was 6-7 he was 13..took Hunk and the Princess girl and had Hunk give it to her from behind…I was upset and cried…now looking back..hysterical
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Simon, pinky and the brain is a completely different cartoon. I stand corrected, it was Penny (Inspector Gadget’s niece) and her dog was Brain.
I watched the TMNT 2000 or whatever it’s called now and they are all futuristic and can fly. Really weird.
I feel sorry for children these days who will never know what true cartoons are. They won’t get the pleasure of watching enjoyable quality shows. Fragile Rock, TMNT, GI Joe, etc.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Top cartoons as a kid!
Voltron
Inspector gadget (not the movie- it sucked)
Smurfs
TMNT
Transformers
Thundercats
GI Joe
Danger Mouse (from Nickelodeon)
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:34 pm
USA Cartoon Express anyone? Man, did that ever kill some time.
Fraggle (not fragile) Rock was amazing. There’s a Fraggle Rock movie in production, I believe.
Anyone here willing to admit they watched Captain Planet on TBS back when shows started at times like 7:05 and 9:35?
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:40 pm
I hated hated HATED Captain Planet as a kid. I even wrote a mock theme song about him when I was like 8. I have the words written down somewhere.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:40 pm
I’ll admit to Captain Planet, reluctantly. It really was quite awful the more you think back to it
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Earth, Water, Fire…Kind of a queer show.
Danger Mouse? Not sure of that. I know Mighty Mouse.
Cartoon Express was the best. Wasn’t Pinwheel on there? There was also a dope show with Koala Bears and Penguins. Can’t remember the name.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Robotech (really, Macross City). Everything else pales in comparison.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:44 pm
USA Cartoon Express Killed the time as a kid! 6 hours of fun if not longer!

Sorry for my random posts, I get excited about old school cartoons.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Pinwheel was Nickelodeon I think…
SquareOne TV anyone? Mathman? Mathnet?
Braingames on HBO?
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Saturday mornings for me – Garfield and Friends, TMNT, Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, WWF Wrestling Challenge
Have to mention Duck Tales also.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:50 pm
Re: Nickelodeon – for some reason I really hated almost everything on Nickelodeon. Maybe it was the exceedingly lameass stuff like Hey Dude and Salute Your Shorts that soured me, but the only shows I ever devoted any time to were Double Dare and Ren and Stimpy.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:56 pm
1. If you don’t remember the cartoon ‘Bravestar,’ woe unto you.
2. #1 was Dan Patrick’s big announcement.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Hey Dude! was good! I liked GUTS (and Glabal GUTS). Check out the GAS channel and you can watch old episodes of the Nickelodeon game shows. It’s hysterical.
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Man, do I feel old.
Nothing was better than watching the Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner Show on Saturday Mornings.
I got the 4 DVD set last Xmas, complete with the violence that was edited out in later years due to wussy parent groups.
Gammons still describes Pedro Martinez’ change up as the “Bugs Bunny Change”
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Ok, this might be the best post ever!!! I can’t believe you busted out USA Cartoon Express… what a flash back! I was a big fan of the ‘toons on USA (ghostbusters, the snorks, etc).
Pinky and the Brain were part of the Animaniacs (great cartoon, still holds up today), then they got their own spin-off show.
Did anyone watch that extremely gay show on Nickelodeon called Today’s Special? It was the one where a mannequin in a department store came to life once the store was closed and he had all these super gay adventures…
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:51 pm
i think dan patrick is going to be the new host of “the price is right”
as for keith olberman, i don’t know, the new rod roddy…the guy who used to say “come on down!”
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:52 pm

July 3rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Says they have a source that 100% confirms that Dan Patrick is leaving
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Any one remember G-Force, the precursor to Voltron?
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Wow… this is good stuff. Haven’t heard some of these names in years. Reading the words Double Dare actually made me laugh out loud!
Transformers was great… but I have to go with TMNT as my all-time fav Saturday morning cartoon. That and old school bugs. After school cartoons were Duck Tales, TailSpin, and a few others that I can’t remember right now. Wow… memories!
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Anybody remember the Super Mario Bros cartoon on the Family Channel, starring Captain Lou Albano? LOVED that show.
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:05 pm
I meant live-action/cartoon regarding above comment.
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:27 pm
When TBL comes back on Thursday there needs to be a best cartoon list! This would be AWESOME!!!!!!!!
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:29 pm
Anything with Captain Lou in it is CLASSIC!!!!!!!!
Who Remember’s The Justice Leauge!
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:43 pm
Muckracker, G-Force was called ‘Battle of The Planets in america. It fucking ruled!
As far as Transformers go, best one was Soundwave. He turned into a boom box, and he had tapes that come out in the form of a bird and a wolf. Greatest. Decepticon. Ever.
Didn’t anyone watch Dungeons and Dragons? I still have a vhs of those I taped when I was a kid.
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:58 pm
Yes, I remember Today’s Special! The mannequin’s name was Sam Krenshaw and he had a friend who was a mouse or cat named Muffy. Terrible, terrible show. Speaking a terrible, there was also a show called Pinwheel on Nickelodeon (Theme song still haunts me “Pinwheel, Pinwheel, spinning around, look at my pinwheel and see what I’ve found) Also, Fred Penner had a terrible show.
However, Nick Jr. did contribute Ureka’s Castle, which had it’s moments. And then they had Nick In the Afternoon hosted by Stick Stickly (write to me, Stick Stickly, PO Box 963, New York City, New York State, 1-0-1-0-8) catchy.
Animaniacs was great. You Can’t Do That On Television was a very old Nickelodeon show, and I believe it was from Canada (everyone said “about” all Canadian like) Alanis Morrisette was on that show, as well as a kid named Allister, to whom the now defunct Pop-Punk band derived it’s name. I really can go on for hours, but I’ll let you all digest that.
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:20 pm
sg116 – OMG “Today’s ‘freakin’ Special” that is a killer. My sister made me watch that. I have to call her right now and let her know that someone else out there watched that crap.
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:34 pm
I heard on the radio he’s replacing Bob Barker.
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:38 pm
Born In 78 , heres my top 5 of all time..
1.Bravestar
2.Fat Albert
3.Transformers
4. Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon (this goes way back)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_&_Dragons_(TV_series)
5. Super Friends..Nuff said..
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:47 pm
how about REBOOT! loved that one.
Cowboys of Moo Mesa not bad, either.
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:51 pm
All time best cartoon was the ’60s Jonny Quest (saw it in reruns in the ’70s).
July 3rd, 2007 at 11:55 pm
I was a big fan of Pro Stars.
Wayne Gretzky, MJ and Bo. Ridiculously awesome.
July 4th, 2007 at 12:07 am
Nickelodeon also had ‘Turkey TV’, which I believe had Dave Coulier in it….
What about Mysterious Cities of Gold? Nick Rocks, the generic MTV show? Nick Arcade, where the people would run around and act like they were in the video game?
July 4th, 2007 at 2:23 am
I have a DVD of ProStars… Michael Jordan’s main attribute is his speed/hops, Bo Jackson has his strength, and Wayne Gretzky… is for some reason a stoner who just eats all the time?
Nick Arcade is incredible. The orginal Double Dare, with host Mark Summers and your announcer Harvey was cool, but it wasn’t until Family Double Dare that you got the opportunity to win a pair of British Knights. Then Mark Summers hosted a crappy knock-off, “What Would You Do”, that was sort of like Double Dare without an actual game involved, but it did have a pie-coaster.
And, of course, for all of us who ever invented a game in the backyard, there was Wild and Crazy Kids. Hosted Donny Jeffcoat, Omar Gooding (later starred in Playmakers), and one of the two interchangable girls. The all time best episode was when they filmed the whole show on location at a water park.
July 4th, 2007 at 3:31 pm
All of you young whippersnappers; jeez. I grew up watching Mighty Mouse, Popeye, and Woody Woodpecker. Those were classic, “real” cartoons.
July 4th, 2007 at 6:10 pm
Dan Patrick has terminal brain cancer and he’s passed it to Stuart Scott, Stephen A. Smith, Ric Bucher, Mike Greenberg, Mike Golic, Mike Lupica, Skip Bayless, Mike Tirico, Tony Kornheiser, and Marc Stein?
And George W. Bush cannot commute their death sentences?
July 4th, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Just got back from seeing the Transformers. It was incredibly NOT awesome. It was the worst movie I’ve seen in the theatre in at least 10 years. Michael Bay just ruined my childhood for me.
Just a complete and total waste of time. It SUCKED.
