The Dan-Patrick-is-Leaving Rumor Picks up Steam
Uncategorized July 5th. 2007, 3:25pm
When we left Tuesday, speculation about Dan Patrick leaving ESPN was turning from a whisper to a roar. For us, it’s what our contacts over at the four-letter weren’t saying: nobody would give us a straight answer. They either hadn’t heard or they couldn’t say. Which led us to believe Patrick was gone. It also sort of makes us wonder if Patrick’s agent planted the Price is Right rumors to fuel interest in the anchor. We do remain somewhat skeptical, though, because ESPN hands USA Today any meaningful scoop (not due to a relationship, but simply because the McPaper has the largest readership audience in the United States), and we found nothing about the announcement in that rag today. We’re guessing it’ll happen Monday, when the world returns to work.
Other outlets, though, have chimed in. Sports at Random is certain Patrick was leaving, and the Chicago Tribune (that’s for the shoutout!) has advanced the story by saying industry insiders claim Patrick is 90 percent gone.
Either way, the Dan Patrick brand is strong, and he’ll definitely have his opportunities. In the 1990s, he was Mr. ESPN, but in recent years, more boisterous self-promoting assclowns have dominated the landscape, with screamers like Stephen A. Smith and Chris Berman doing everything humanly possible to make people take notice of them. Though not all feelings toward him are positive, at least he hasn’t resorted to shouting in order to be heard.
Here’s where it gets interesting: let’s say Fox Sports wants to seriously make a push at ESPN on the tube. Even though it’s an incredible uphill climb, and probably impossible, wouldn’t you spend the big bucks to grab Patrick? Just food for thought. Oh, and one last thing – should Patrick leave, ESPN will be looking to fill that last page in the Magazine every two weeks, so get your resumes ready.
[Larry Brown Sports has even more from the radio world pointing to Patrick's departure.]
ESPN could lose Dan Patrick (Chicago Tribune)

DP leaving ESPN to go to FOX would make David Caruso look like a fucking genius.
July 5th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
I’d imagine that Olbermann would manage to talk him down from jumping to Fox Sports.
July 5th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
He should make the move; I’m sure there’s more cash in any of the alleged opportunities, and the location has to be better than Bristol, CT.
Not to mention, while loyalty isn’t a word used in the entertainment industry, ESPN has proven that it doesn’t even know what the word means. Plus, each year you’re at ESPN, the odds of you being named in a sexual harassment suit rise incrementally.

Hot damn! Always good to see “assclown” in the morning.
I still think he’s making a run at an Imus-like position somewhere. I could even see MSNBC and radio. I see him getting completely out of sports so the arguement that ESPN affiliates won’t carry a radio show wouldn’t matter.
I understand why he is leaving. You help build the ESPN and now all your friends are gone and they’ve been replaced by yapping jibberish lapdogs. You take a look around and figure you can be at least this unhappy running your own show without listening to the constant blathering.

I remember back when Dan Patrick tried, it was 15 years ago and I was in middle school. I’m willing to give him a hundred bucks personally just to have his radio show off the air so that I don’t even have the possibility of accidentally turning it on.
July 5th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
Ok, should have made it more clear … OBVIOUSLY he’s not going to leave ESPN for Fox.
BUT, if he does leave ESPN to explore opportunities … and nothing comes his way, scurrying back to your employer isn’t always the route you want to take. This is where Fox COULD jump in.
July 5th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
Assclown is the perfect adjective for Stephen A. Smith.
July 5th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
One other thing assuming he is leaving…
Would this be the first time ESPN and a personality actually had a amicable split? If ESPN is still letting him stay on air then they must at least be cool with the idea of him leaving. Usually, folks are just yanked off the air and then turn up elsewhere 6 months later.

Good riddance…….there is nothing worse than having Dan ask someone a question and 1/3rd through there answer he’s crying and interrupting them complaining. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out Daniel Patrick Pugh.

Maybe NBC offered him a job for Sunday Night Football. Last I checked, they had lots of talentless bodies stuffed on the set of that trainwreck, so why not one more?

Dan was great on Sportscenter. His radio show is awful though. A great example given by Carl. He really isn’t that funny either on his own. He’s good at the one liners on Sportscenter, thats about it.
July 5th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
DP getting hugged by fat housewifes before they try their hand at Plinko? Awesome. Maybe he’ll stop dying his hair like Bob Barker eventually did.
July 5th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
What does it mean that Patrick is 90% gone? Is he leaving his forearms there and taking the rest?
July 5th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
Will he get a free ESPN Mobile device as a parting gift?
July 5th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
Since Joe Scarborough now has the old Imus slot, I predict Dan Patrick gets his old slot on MSNBC, right after Keith’s show.
July 5th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
I think there is a very good chance that Patrick will be heading over to MSNBC to be with Olbermann. I could even see MSNBC putting Patrick on the morning show that Imus once occupied so he can double duty as TV host and radio show at the same time.
July 5th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
What are the chances WFAN and CNBC and all of their syndicates offered Dan a massive deal to become the permanant replacement for Imus?
July 5th, 2007 at 5:16 pm
Guess who is off again today?

I liked the Dan Patrick radio show when Rob Dibble was on with him. Instead of “Video killed the Radio Star”, we need a song with the line: “Sports blogs killed the ESPN stars.”
July 5th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
seriously, we need DP back. Val Valvano is the worst espn radio subsititute ever! icant stand listening to him for 3 seconds. he’s like the valium of the sports radio.
July 5th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
I hope he reunites with Dibbs for a new radio show! Dan and Dibbs were so great together.
Their Tonya Harding interview was classic.
July 5th, 2007 at 6:27 pm
Dan’s radio show has been pretty awful ever since Dibble left, which is odd since Dibble wasn’t really that good. Olbermann has helped and has even kepe Patrick in check, but what about Patrick becoming more of a Costas-type.
I don’t think he goes to Fox, BUT, if you think about it, Joe Buck hosting the NFL studio show never quite worked. Fox also has the BCS and the World Series, so who knows?
July 5th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Dan probably takes some sports anchor-costas like gig for ABC. Thats why the split is a smooth one, because he’s not leaving the Disney family.
July 5th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Valvano is awful? Kuselias is like finger nails on a chalk board…
July 5th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Besides a whole lot of name dropping he really doesn’t do much anymore anyway. Most of the “regular guests” just chat it up like they were at lunch and there’s little substance to the show anymore.
It’s more pop culture than sports with Patrick running the ship alone, they need to fill the seat with actual sports people. The Big Show is not very far from Cowherd’s annoying rants.
July 5th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Interesting thought, Alex. Makes perfect sense.
Maybe he can also go down the Costas/Gumbell alley and have a “This Type of Sports Show Should Be Way Better Than This” type thing on HBO.
July 5th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
No matter what happens, it”s good he’ll still be in the mainstream media. the guy is articulate. Not a lot of broadcasters can nsay that these days.
July 5th, 2007 at 8:40 pm
What about if he was offered the FOX NFL Sunday studio job? Or is Curt Menafee already plugged in as the permanent host?
July 5th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Don’t entirely dismiss the fact that his brother is the head of programming for Sporting News Radio in Los Angeles. I’m sure it can’t be just for that reason but couple that opportunity with either the Price is Right or Fox NFL and it looks like he could be headed west.
July 6th, 2007 at 2:04 am
If this leads to ESPN Radio giving The Notorious Steven A. Smith his own super-network radio show from 1-4 each day, then we need to do everything possible to keep DP at the WWL.
July 6th, 2007 at 5:24 am
CBS’s Early Show is looking for new hosts. Maybe DP’s tired of sports.

Sporting News Radio in Los Angeles?
There is no Sporting News Radio in Los Angeles anymore.
July 6th, 2007 at 9:31 pm
all i can dsay is i wish him the best, but Dan, Keith and Craig Kilborn should all get back together cause they WERE the best 3 announcers Sportcenter ever had
