Ballin’: Clippers, Kings, Knicks Get 1st Win; Iverson Complains About His Minutes in Memphis Debut
NBA, Video November 3rd. 2009, 11:30am

Minnesota 90, LA Clippers 93: Mike Dunleavy made a move, and the Clippers won! Dunleavy swapped struggling Al Thornton out of the starting lineup and inserted Rasual Butler. The result: Clippers win! Nevermind that Butler shot 3-for-15. Chris Kaman received MVP chants. Eric Gordon had 17 for the Clippers, and that guy needs more shots; he could score 25 a night in this league. Rookie Wayne Ellington, he of the hot girlfriend, went 0-for-4.
New Orleans 111, New York 117: The Knicks got a win! They’re pretty much our favorite team - the first two NBA games we attended in the 80’s involved the Knicks and Lakers, so we gravitated toward them - but NY has no hope this season. When they sign two superstars in July? Big fun! In what will become a theme this season … frustrated Chris Paul had 32 points and 13 assists in a losing effort.
Houston 113, Utah 96: The Rockets improved to 3-1 win a nice road win as eight players scored in double figures, including rookie Chase Budinger (17). Even though there are 78 games left on the schedule, ESPN’s John Hollinger means everyone “has to take the Rockets seriously.” Second best stat of the night (best is below): Shane Battier, +36. Whatever. Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Paul Millsap combined to shoot 7-for-28.
New Jersey 68, Charlotte 79: How do you shoot 32 percent from the field, turn the ball over 19 times, and only make 1-of-15 three-pointers and win? You play winless New Jersey, which scored just seven points in the third quarter and suffered through a 10 minute dry spell. Gerald Wallace scored 24 points and collected 20 rebounds. The Nets played without Devin Harris (groin) again, and Yi Jianlian got hurt (knee).
Memphis 116, Sacramento 127, OT: We would have opened with Beno Udrih’s game-tying layup with 1-second left, or maybe Kevin Martin’s 48 points, or perhaps even the sprained ankle that limited rookie Tyreke Evans to 24 minutes and three points. But instead, Allen Iverson’s postgame comments stole the show. He played for the first time this season, scoring 11 points in 17 minutes. “Go look at my resume and that will show you that I’m not a sixth man. I don’t think it has anything to do with me being selfish. It’s just who I am. I don’t want to change what gave me all the success that I’ve had since I’ve been in this league.” Nobody could have seen this one coming.

Orlando @ Detroit tonight. Detroit has won 19 of the last 24 games. Looks like Vince will play tonight. Rip Hamilton will not play
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 am
i can’t believe Hollinger would type something that preposterous. that’s like saying about a Yankees-Mariners series in May - this series will tell us if we have to take them seriously.
maybe he was drunk?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:39 am
This is going to be awesome.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:40 am
Irish- Ben Gordon will take his spot score 40 and they will still lose.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:40 am
Iverson’s got a point though, Conley looked terrible and it was an awful move to take out AI with 4 and a half minutes to go.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:41 am
Popeye Jones has seen less ugly days.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:42 am

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:42 am
sorry, Irish, the real story tonight is Kobe vs. KD
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:42 am
Maybe Memphis’s coach isn’t satisfied with Iverson’s effort in practice.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:43 am
This Modern Family show is hilarious, kinda pissed I waited until now to catch up.

TBL: Rudy Gay, restricted free agent this summer, is that something you might be interested in?

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 am
Iverson is a fucktard.
class personified. Get these developing players out so I can have my swan song on an 8 win team.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 am
Iverson is going to be a bigger headache for the Grizzlies than Randolph.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 am
great episode of entourage
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:48 am
Bad start by the Hornets and everyone is running to trade Paul out?
Still not happy with the results but fact is this team is still integrating Okafor and Wright into the starting line-up. If their form isn’t better by after December, then worry.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:48 am
He will be traded to the Lakers along with Lebron

Larry Hughes also showed some signs of life last night
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 am
I miss watching Chris Paul play for Wake Forest.
/Yes, I prefer amateur basketball.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 am
Manu Ginobili got a rabies shot, too. I had the link up, but you can trust me.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 am
Wait what, OKafor is on the Hornets?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 am
Zach Randolph is actually putting up decent numbers now.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:53 am
Wait what, OKafor is on the Hornets?
they dealt Tyson Chandler for him straight up, in an inexplicable move.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:55 am
just not a good team. i’m realistic.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:55 am
Larry Hughes has been head- scratchingly efficient.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 am
dirt, Chandler looked poor again last night, its becoming something of a habit (yes its bobcats, but…)
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 am
What did Hollinger write TBL? (I’ve ignored anything with his byline for years, and for good reason. He’s another Kobe hater (I heard last year he laid out all the “proof” on why Kobe couldn’t win a title b/c he was so inefficient…so I laugh when people cite him on here).
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:58 am
I dont understand how this Hornets team fell so bad when they still have the same core peices they had in 2008. I know Chandler’s gone, but was he really that good in NO? What the fuck happened to West? He was an All-Star…I’m assuming it was a contract year.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:58 am
I watched them all in one sitting on abc.com. It’s the only thing I watch other than sports/hbo. Although, V looks promising. I think that starts tonight.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:00 pm
CC - Did you not read the post?
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Good teams have been quitting on Byron Scott for years.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Link?
also, you see Ariza three point shooting so far?

He’s really going to be lost. Any progress he made (and that was mostly just catching and finishing) in New Orleans is going to be lost. He needs to be rewarded a lot with easy buckets.
I’m not going to watch any Charlotte games, but that was a terrible, short money trade by them.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:02 pm
V does look good. I haven’t watched any of the crazy ABC shows ever. I can finally get in on the fun.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Goddamn thats funny.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:04 pm
I know Chandler’s gone, but was he really that good in NO?
No, he wasn’t. He’s completely complimentary. It’s basically the same team, minus a few guys who lost by 58 at home last year in the playoffs, didn’t cut their coach loose, and then shopped guys all summer for cheaper guys.
They publicly and openly lamented not being able to trade Chandler for Ben Wallace’s buyout. They’re broke.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Your the only person who I’ve hear say this. Mostly I’ve heard people foolishly claim Morena Baccarin isn’t hot as hell.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Wait what, OKafor is on the Hornets?
they dealt Tyson Chandler for him straight up, in an inexplicable move.
Not inexplicable. It was a salary cap move.
Chandler and Okafor had the same contracts, but Chandler’s paid more in less years while Okafor is smaller but longer. Given the salary cap situations around the NBA, the Hornets opted to save themselves some cash now.
Besides they tried to trade Chandler last season and failed. They lost confidence in his foot healing back properly and giving him the explosiveness that made Paul-to-Chandler work so well.
I dont understand how this Hornets team fell so bad when they still have the same core peices they had in 2008. I know Chandler’s gone, but was he really that good in NO? What the fuck happened to West? He was an All-Star…I’m assuming it was a contract year.
Part of the problem is that the Hornets tied themselves to Peja Stojakovic for major money. Well, surprise, surprise: Peja has been injured and is now coming off the bench. The other part is that, even when they surprised people, it was all down to the starters. The Hornets are still developing a bench that can do something to give Paul, West and the rest some breaks during games.
As for West, he’s still an 18-7 kind of guy. He’s really a great #3 option, but it’s too much to ask him to be the #2.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
i won’t watch V.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Semi related: UNC lost by double digits to Vandy in a super secret scrimmage this weekend…and Ogilvy didn’t play for Vandy. Apparently Drew II is just as bad as non-UNC fans thought.
But hey, Duke’s the program with guard issues, amirite?
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Chandler, 2 years left, 12&13
Okafor, 5 years left, 10-14 every year. Total, about 60 million owed.
They’re not the same contracts. But it’s 2 million less to pay this year, which is what you mean.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:09 pm
They’re broke.
They’re in the same hole about 10 other NBA teams are in right now. The economy has hit them hard.
Outside of teams like the Lakers or the Knicks, you’re seeing teams cut payroll, reduce staffs and try to go on the cheap. The Hornets have learned how to do this before.
The downside is that it does leave them threadbare against other teams.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:09 pm
you can’t talk shit about a defending national champion. It’s in the by-laws or some shit.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:11 pm
I’m hoping it’s the next Lost. Something I can watch for a few seasons then totally forget about.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Thats the problem. He is converts a such a weak clip means he is taking too many shoots to get 18. and he is bad on D. Mo Peter and Posey have been surprisingly worthless as well. How bobby brown keeps taking shots, no one will know (35 attempts on 73 mins)
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:12 pm

Exactly.
On top of which, West and Okafor make sense if you want to play a halfcourt, physical-type game more than West and Chandler. IF Okafor can start becoming the kind of NBA player folks wanted him to be, the team will be OK in the long run. Paul makes others better around him.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:12 pm
By-law? What’s a by-law?
/fuckin Chuck Norris
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Since this is a basketball post, i’m going to copy something that I posted earlier. It boggles my mind and i’d like to get everyone’s opinion. Except Sparty. Don’t need his.
/still fuming over his list
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Springsteen played a song with those two, and you’re giving me Fergie?
Sorry. You DO need a woman’s voice for that song though. I just love Mick and U2. Not a huge Springsteen fan.

David West slapped Nowitzki on live TV. One of the NBA’s greatest moments.
