Chase Utley Carries Phillies Back to the Bronx
Baseball November 3rd. 2009, 9:15am
Cliff Lee put on a memorable World Series performance in Game 1 and was certainly up to the task last night in Game 5, but his moment on the moon was short-lived compared to what Chase Utley has been doing. The All-Star second baseman with bomb-resistant hair has already hit five home runs in this series, including two that set the tone early on in both of Philly’s wins.
His inevitable three-run shot in the first inning last night had most Yankee fans feeling like they were meeting Ned Ryerson for the 10th time in the same day. It can be a rather unfortunate experience.
The only Yankee starter Utley has yet to touch up is Andy Pettitte. He’ll get another whack at the Yankee veteran on Wednesday night, thanks to A.J. Burnett’s dreadful outing of four hits, four walks and six runs in two innings of pretending to work. He was basically useless, although a meltdown on the road against a lineup like Philly’s was hardly surprising.
As for Game 6, Pettitte will be the latest Yankee starter to go on short rest. He’s not exactly known for having a rubber arm, but when Chad Gaudin is the other option, you go with Andy.
Also making his way to the hill on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium? Pedro Martinez. Even the most euphoric Phillies fan would be hard-pressed to match the excitement of Fox executives right now. That baritone yelp you just heard was Joe Buck’s scorching woody tearing through his pleated pants. Should be fun.
My Choice to Throw Out the First Pitch? Karim Garcia. Not for any reason other than the fact that Pedro would really appreciate it if someone finally introduced him to the legendary Yankee.
Surprising, Make-Homer-Go-Crazy Stat: The starting first basemen in this series are a combined 5-for-36 with 19 Ks and 3 RBIs. Robinson Canó still trumps both of them though, as the only thing he’s hit solidly is Melky’s ass.
Today’s New York Daily News … Brutal. After taking two of three in Philly, where they hadn’t lost a postseason game since last October, it’s touching to see Mark Teixeira and the Yanks receive such a warm welcome home. How quickly the Daily News has forgotten what it was like to have Jason Giambi standing next first base drinking a Bud Light pounder.

@bsanders – No doubt. Daily News is classy like that.

I know it’s mentioned every year but McCarver and Buck may be the worst big game tandem in the history of sports. Every year I swear off watching the WS because they ruin it for me. I would give me left nut to be able to ambush the press box during the game, silently take both out with a dull knife, and take over their duties after the 15 sec delay like nothing happened.

Best part of my day is following this link to this Simpsons clip:

it’s that whole “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately” mentality. I’m sure A-rod has a few encouraging words for him, though, about how it will get better if he doesn’t come around in the post season right away.

1st time in my life that i have not watched the world series. i would rather not watch than have to see the yankees win.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:36 am
And he got them on the board with a solo shot to tie things up in Game 2 against Pedro. You know it’s bad when the Post hasn’t gone that far.

I could go for a good bagpiping right about now.

someone needs to figure out what the hell is on utleys head.

Thank you for that link, St. Bear. Thank you very much.

how much more exciting is this year’s world series than last year’s?
only thing i remember from last year: the rain delay that had one game end at 2 am
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:47 am
Yea, and Jeter was the one who hit into the DP in the 9th.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:48 am
A whole hell of a lot more. I really like that Phil Ivey is still in it and has a chance at the main event bracelet.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:48 am
what about the rain delay that made one game end 2 days later?

During the MNF telecast (which I watched starting at 4am, thanks baby) ESPN took down the crawl at the bottom. They’d throw it up for a few seconds here and there, but they very, very seldom showed a score in the WS game.
Once it was over, they were screaming the score. It was funny how they were trying to hold viewers. Pretty good game, cheap cover by Atlanta though (or push).

Last year had 4 or 5 games decided by two runs or less…

@St. Bear – Awesome. Made my otherwise shitty morning.
/Ahh, tv. Teacher, mother, secret-lover.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 am
Last year was horrendous.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 am
@SportsHernia- leaving me hanging?
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:55 am
Oh yeah, I started noticing him in Game 3, but he hadn’t been there all postseason until then. He is devoted to face paint.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:55 am
Game 3 last year was the most exciting game of these two years and games 1-2 last year were just as good as anything this year.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:56 am
That was the clutchest double play in the history of clutch. Arod wishes he could hit into a double play that clutch. Didn’t you notice the run that scored? Clutch!

i don’t really think this is the time to criticize jeter, his obp has to be like 600 or something. i still can’t believe that dp happened in the 9th
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:58 am
haha, this is true
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:58 am
Seriously? This is the internet. It was created so that we could criticize Jeter 24/7.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:59 am
I know I’m just making a point that the Post only eats up certain people.

In fairness, this is what the Philly Daily News front page looks like.

Anyone hear about the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame concerts? Sounds like it was amazing. U2, Mick Jagger and Fergie playing “Gimmie Shelter”! I think Jagger nailed Fergie to pass up Stan Lee in their ongoing competition to bang the most broads after.

No comments on Burnett tearing it up on 3 days rest? I guess real baseball isn’t a computer game where every pitcher can throw on 3 days rest without consequence.
So, if Pettite blows up tomorrow night, will Yankee fans want to run Girardi out on a rail?
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:32 am
that is, INCREDIBLY embarrassing.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:36 am
only old people do that.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:39 am
Troy Tulowitski had a .401 OBP from June 1st on.
/the more you know
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:40 am
Springsteen played a song with those two, and you’re giving me Fergie?

Fuck all-star jams. this one might have been ok (fergie’s hot), but exception to the rule
