Matt Ryan: Loved by All One Week; Questions Linger the Next
1-liner, Media Gossip/Musings, NFL November 3rd. 2009, 11:00amMatty Ice: The Falcons lost to the unbeaten Saints, 35-24 last night. Atlanta’s Matt Ryan was intercepted three times, including getting picked off at the Saints’ one-yard line (the pass was tipped) in the fourth quarter. His 19-for-42 effort was not his best. The New Orleans home field advantage has done strange things to good QBs this year - Mark Sanchez and Eli Manning struggled as well. But what’s funny is that last night’s loss, which is being pinned on Ryan, somehow has the Atlanta media questioning last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year. “What if Matty Ice isn’t quite as good as we thought he was? What if he’s a good NFL quarterback but not a great in the making? Will that be enough to lift this franchise on high? It wasn’t enough in this wild and careening game.” Ha. Remember less than a month ago when Ryan and the Falcons thumped the hot 49ers and the media swooned? Must. Prevent. Knee-jerk. Reactions. The Saints are 7-0 and still have that 16-0 look.

Big difference between those two. Mark Sanchez may yet be a good QB, but he’s not one now. Best quote from the Dolphins-Jets fallout was this one:
“My mother used to say, ‘When you win, say very little. When you lose, say less.’ Bart Scott said too much today. When a team beats you twice, give them credit and go home.”
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:04 am
Well thats never happened before (except all the time).
Ryan wasn’t terrible, but I dont see a lot of zip on his passes, especially outside the hashes. Also looks for Gonzalez waaaayy too much. He’s still a long way from being a top QB.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:05 am
Browns fans are open to you trading him north.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:07 am
Mark Sanchez does not belong in this sentence.

/Vader Fist Pump!YEA!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:07 am
Yeah TBL, I have big hopes for Sanchez my self… but lets back off from the good QB grouping right now. Matt Ryan had a bad game against a team that leads the league in interceptions and passes defended (defensed?). He is gonna be a very good qb.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:08 am
he’s in his 2nd year in the NFL…who WASN’T a long way from being a top QB in their 2nd year in the NFL? peyton? marino?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:08 am
he is somewhere between the 15th-20th best qb. isnt that where everyone thought he was?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:09 am
contradiction does not compute.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:10 am
Dungy says some good things on Sunday night but he just looks so awkward in front of the camera, it’s hard to get past that sometimes..
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:12 am
He has child molester stare, no doubt.
Are there 20 good QB’s in the NFL?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:13 am
hes a 2nd yr player, we don’t know how good (or mediocre) he will be yet.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:13 am
I’ve seen quite a few falcon fans around these parts talking him up quite a bit. They were calling him Peyton-light or some shit just a few weeks ago.
Do I really need to say it?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:14 am
wait wait you’re lumping mark sanchez in with the good QBs? pump your breaks.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:14 am
rodgers, brady, big ben, cutler, peyton, schaub, brees, hasselback, Romo… favre, warner, and eli I guess. Who else?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 am
feel free to say it…you’ll just be wrong.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 am
3 interceptions, one his fault, but had a rough game anyway. The first pick six he threw involved White being blocked to the ground before the ball got there.
We got the opportunities we needed to win and didn’t take advantage of them all game long. That’s the worst part.
But the booth was awful last night. Gruden sucks balls as the season has progressed… I want Tony back. Every single play he went on a gay love rant about a player or coach, even when it didn’t apply. And it was for both teams which made it more annoying.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 am
Alot of the Ryan hype had as much to do with the eagerness with Atlanta fans and some NFL fans in general to get over the whole Michael Vick thing than to do with his actual performance. He’s decent, but the talk about him last year was overblown. When it’s all said and done, Flacco will be the better QB, actually he probably is right now.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 am
yes say that he got carried by his run game and defense.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 am
Matt Ryan was JaMarcian (?) last night, but he’s still a very good QB. That being said, I think the younger QBs in the league are getting considerably over-hyped.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:16 am
McNabb. He’s ahead of Schaub, Hasselback, Warner and Eli on that list.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 am
Is this the same Atlanta media that made excuses for Vick for three years when he couldn’t hit an 18 wheeler parked in front of him? Now, they’re throwing Ryan under the bus for one game where he wasn’t terrible? Nice. I’d expect that from 2 Live Fools.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 am
qb tiers go- manning,brady-roethlisberger,brees-rodgers,rivers,favre-romo,eli,mcnabb-schaub,warner,flacco,palmer-ryan,orton,cutler,hasselbeck-shit-

Unbelievable what writers come up with to fill column space. First this:
http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/smith_091102.html
Now the Atlanta sports media (who knew!) bailing on Matt Ryan after losing to an undefeated team by 8 points?! Wow. Just, wow.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 am
Ben was 14-1 in his first season. Won the first of two SBs in season two.
There, I said it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:18 am
forgot rivers. Who is this “McNabb”?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:18 am
QB’s in the league in general are overhyped, because they’re the most recognizable figures in the sport and the NFL’s marketing fuel.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:19 am
rivers.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:19 am
And if anyone thinks the Saints are not the best team in the NFL right now, you’re crazy. They’re nasty at every position.

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:19 am

you’re from St Louis, so you, like someone else who shall remain nameless, doesn’t think to highly of him
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:20 am
Eli is not a better QB than McNabb right now.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:20 am
rodgers, brady, big ben, cutler, peyton, schaub, brees, hasselback, Romo… favre, warner, and eli I guess. Who else?
I myself would take Ryan over Cutler, Schaub, Hasselback, Romo, and Warner. And not just because my name is Ryan.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:21 am
he’s a faggot.
i don’t like using that word, but that’s really the only word taht should be used to describe ben roethlisberger. professional faggot.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:21 am
Forgot wins is a stat. Mike Kruczek was a hall of famer.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:22 am
Linking Mark Bradley should be clue number 1 that this post is knee jerk central.
Had absolutely nothing to do with winning 11 games and going to the playoffs. Nothing at all.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:23 am
They’re racist.
If you have watched more than last night’s MNF, the hype over Ryan isn’t unfounded. Even in the superdome (the worst place to play) he was able to drive back down for a score during the most pressure of the game when the ball was tipped and intercepted. And I’d like to point out that was a 1st down/TD to Tony G if it wasn’t tipped. He had him… and if it wasn’t tipped what would the media ‘experts” have to say?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:23 am
Rush is actually from Cape Girardeau, MO, home of the fighting SEMO RedHawks!! His family rules the town with an iron fist.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:24 am
Yes, wins and losses are silly.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:24 am
That Faggot has Two rings. Spence were you secretly hoping he would die after that motorcycle accident?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:24 am
The true test would for Kyle Orton to play the Saints in the Superdome.
Because you know, he’s won alot of games.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:26 am
I’m slowly coming around on them, but the defense still sucks, they are being propped up by turnovers which makes them appear better than they are. You can still gash them for big plays regularly.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:26 am
I don’t understand what is so polarizing about Donovan McNabb. People either think he is way better than he is or that he is one of the worst QB’s in the league.
Check the stats. It’s a pretty large sample size at this point. He’s somewhere between the 8th-10th best QB in the league.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:26 am
Touchdown.
This year, Schaub is the only one I’d put ahead on that list.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:27 am
Don’t talk about Super Bowl wins. Mike Kruczek has Super Bowl rings as well.
/Cap Rooney’d
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:27 am
id be lying if i said no.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:28 am
Hell no.
Rodgers and Rivers ain’t done shit in this league to be rated ahead of McNabb. Brees has atleast gotten to the Championship game, plus his play over the past 2 years has been so phenomonal, he has to be placed second behind Payton, or even 1 a at this point. Right now, it’s Manning/Brees and everyone else.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:28 am
Big Ben is the best QB of all time.
/412′d
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:29 am
TBL wasn’t saying Sanchez was good. He said good QB’s have struggled… Sanchez and Eli also struggled, thus not grouping them into the good category.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:29 am
Don’t talk about Super Bowl wins. Mike Kruczek has Super Bowl rings as well.
Don’t forget Terry friggin Bradshaw. And Joe Namath.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:29 am
Did anybody but me watch this game? Ryan’s got some O-line problems, but I thought he played pretty well. The first pick was cheap, though. Oh, and the long TD was offensive pass interference. And that out route that got picked when they had a chance to take the lead, the spot was too narrow.
Get rid of this loser!

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:32 am
that was the only really bad mistake he made all game
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:32 am
Since Ryan played at Tech, you are correct, sir.

My God, where are the old people to bring this convo back to the sensible?
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:33 am
See, when a Falcons fan is praising the Saints, you ought to take notice.
TBL, so, I assume you’re just getting warmed up for the big “Praising the Saints” post later on, right?
/Wants the Saints to get some credit.
//But not too much credit.

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:37 am
They have a good D. They pass rush well and they get turnovers, which at this point isn’t by accident. One or 2 games getting turnovers and big defensive plays could be coincidence, but at this point in the season it’s da truf.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 am
Well, that’s not quite what I’m saying. But, if it makes it easier for you you to strawman, have at it.
Spence made the comment about young QBs generally struggling. I was just pointing out that Ben not only did not struggle (14-1 his rookie year), but actually had a ring by year 2. Sorry if that is too much for you to follow, Cap.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:39 am
Had absolutely nothing to do with having an 1800 yard runner and a good defense. Nothing at all.

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:41 am
that’d be fantastic and all if you provided some substance as to his individual performance. he barely threw the ball that year (under 300 attempts, under 2,400 yards), but had a high completion % and YPA…what does that tell you? 9 in the box. the entire game.

9 in the box. the entire game.
Maybe not 9, but a whole bunch. And in those first two years, that was a top tier Oline, and he got to hand the ball to Bettis and Parker, before Parker died.

Yeah, those things were a large reason the team won 11 games. The 11 wins are a large reason Ryan got a lot of hype.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 am
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ‘83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 am
Put JP Losman on the Steelers and Big Ben in Buffalo and Losman would have had a ring with that team
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 am
That’s funny.
Which defense are you talking about? And the RB is an argument last year, but there is no RB to ride this year and our offense is putting up points.

So Big Ben is overvalued by his fan base and everyone else hates him because he’s dumb/annoying/at least has sex with and possibly rapes hideous women/HAS RINGS.

November 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 am
Matt Ryan had 13 touchdowns and 6 interceptions though 13 weeks and a pretty good completion pct and QB rating for a rookie QB and the Falcons were winning and everyone was on the band wagon. Yes, having Turner helped a hell of a lot, but Ryan was playing very well. Since then he’s come back to earth like an overwhelming majority of young QBs do.
Does he lock on to Gonzo too much? Yeah, but he does that with White too. I would too if that sorry ass Jenkins were my only other receiving option. The pick 6 was brutal. Even though White got tackled by Vilma before the ball got there, it was going the other way no matter what. The other two you can’t kill him for. Vilma made a great tip on one of them and then he throw a hail mary and got picked for the other.
Ryan’s potential is through the roof because he works hard and is a smart guy, but he’s got a good but not great arm and still makes young QB decisions. He’ll get over it eventually. Right now he’s a good, but not great QB. He’s right where a second year QB should be.

Ryan is not a bad QB. He’s made Roddy White and Michael Jenkins into real NFL WRs — when Vick couldn’t find them at all.
But he’s still young and will make mistakes and have bad games.
As for my Saints, 7-0 and there’s no limit. They gotta take care of the ball and avoid mistakes. But a 13-3/14-2 and home field throughout is possible.
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:56 am

Their outside linebackers are mediocre, their LT is inexperienced, and Carney sucks for some reason. Also, their only FB was on the street 4 days ago.

They also mentioned that Atlanta’s OC and New Orleans’ DC were back-to-back Bills coaches.
I thought the Bills made the right decision on Clements. Greer, they should have locked up before his contract expired.

November 3rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I also didn’t like how they called Saints GM Mickey Loomis a “genius.” The only reason he got Brees was because Miami didn’t want him. He also tied up Charles Grant and Will Smith to ridiculous contracts that will cost the team in the future (if there’s a cap in the future). Robert Meachem can’t get on the field half the time.
And then there’s Jason David.
Loomis has done a great job finding diamonds in the rough: Colston, Lance Moore, Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, Pierre Thomas, etc.. But he’s not Bill Polian just yet.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:19 pm
so you do remember the Colts game when he made the tackle..you did watch it!

And Sean Payton couldn’t have his first choice either, the then Dallas Cowboy backup Tony Homo.

Roethlisberger has two SB rings, while Peyton Manning was making the Manning Face up until a couple years ago when he learned how to not gack in a big game.

Great…commentary from the guy who still thinks Jason Campbell is a worthwhile pro QB.

Another monster created by Bill Simmons. Here’s my review of his basketball book, by the way - it’s only worth of reading while you’re shitting, but it’s too heavy to hold while your shitting. Oh, and he’s one pompous, self aggrandizing jagoff.

True, but we’d all probably trade places with him in a heartbeat.
/I know I would

If the illegal contact/pass interference/hip check on Roddy was called the pick 6 never happens. If the PI in the endzone is called Atlanta ties the game at 28 rather than kicking a FG. If the BS holding call on 3rd and 5 is not called Atl gets the ball down 4, not 11. Even with getting hosed Atl had plenty of chances. The tipped INT was a back breaker. I came away from the game feeling better about Atl than goin in. They have Tampa twice, the Bills, Redskins and Panthers left. They still have a good shot at 10 wins.

Sorry, Cap…but Peyton was the ARod of football (pre 2009 post-season) prior to winning that one Super Bowl. He racked up superb fantasy numbers, but always fell short when it counted. This is no longer the case, but Roethlisberger accomplished much more at the same point in his career. That is…if you actually think wins and losses are relevant.

Yeah, keep dreaming. So-called “Matty Ice” will get to see up close and personal what a real NFL QB looks like next week when the Redskins and Jason Campbell come calling.

My God, man. Stop. You’re embarassing yourself.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:21 pm
how can you honestly say that?
peyton produced more. roethlisberger produced less.
bottom line.
wins and losses are irrelevant because there’s 21 other guys that have an impact on the game. my god why do we have to keep going through this shit?

Peyton did produce for bettors who wagered against the Colts in big games.

Our swiss-chese secondary and non-existent pass rushers agree with you.
