Michigan Fans Are Antsy, But Calls To Fire Rodriguez are Premature
College Football, Delicate Geniuses November 3rd. 2009, 4:00pm
Michigan was routed 38-13 last weekend, by an Illinois team with a 1-6 record. The catastrophic loss dropped the Wolverines to 1-4 in the Big Ten. Michigan went five weeks in October without defeating a Division 1 opponent. What was an apparent leap forward has become further disappointment.
Alumni are understandably antsy. Rich Rodriguez does deserve blame, but calling for his ouster is premature. It would be more detrimental at this juncture.
Rodriguez was hired for his offense, which has been more effective this year. Turnovers have plagued Michigan (more than two per game), but every quarterback the past two years has been either a freshman or a walk-on. That and the atrocious offensive line should improve through experience and recruiting.
Michigan’s real concern is their defense.
Talent is a factor. Michigan’s defensive recruiting has been lean. Even when Michigan has brought in recruits, they have struggled to keep them. Michigan has just 58 percent of their defensive recruits from 2005 to 2009 on the team, compared with 78 percent at Ohio St. and 84 percent at Notre Dame. Michigan has a total of 28 defenders compared to 46 at tOSU.
Many players who have stayed have not developed as expected. That’s understandable with three different defensive coordinators the past three seasons.
Rodriguez’ initial hire, Scott Shafer, was a predictable disaster. Upon arrival he confidently declared “scheme is overrated,” stressing the platitudes of “great effort, great attitude and great enthusiasm.”
That’s like a builder saying, “engineering is overrated.”  We’re going to construct this bridge “with good intentions and old fashioned elbow grease.”  His spiel is up there with Rod Marinelli’s “Get Low” and Charlie Weis’ “decided schematic advantage.”
While Shafer was terrible, it’s not clear Greg Robinson has been better. Michigan’s talent deficiencies have been exacerbated by overloaded blitzes and over-pursuit. The Wolverines have allowed at least 30 points to every Division 1 team outside the state of Michigan.
Robinson skulks the sidelines with a delicate genius reputation gleamed from one season of work at Texas in 2004. He wears a different uniform than the other assistants, presumably because he was a former head coach. In what world is going 3-25 in the Big East a merit badge?
Michigan has long-term troubles that can only be solved with experience and improved talent. Changing systems again only sets the program back further.
There will be more growing pains, more acrimony and, yes, more losses. Michigan fans must realize Bo Schembechler is not walking onto that field. Rich Rodriguez must realize that is the field Bo Schembechler walked onto.

speaking of turd sandwiches
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Rich Rod is transitioning, better yet, overhauling the program to fit his schemes especially on offense. If the administration wasn’t prepared to give him 3-4 years to do so they wouldn’t had went that rout.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Im antsy but I think firing Rich Rod would be pre-mature.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Rich will win here if given time. 2 years is nowhere near long enough. Nice post.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
oh fuck maggs is gonna fucking lose it.
Why? Hasn’t Maggs pretty much been saying that Rich Rod needs more time to get his players in place? This seems to be what Duffy is saying too. I haven’t seen Maggs really jump into Michigan football lately, so maybe I’m a little behind everyone else.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
hilarious
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
the biggest problem is penn state is starting to recruit like a top 10 program. gonna take longer than expected to get back to top 2 in the b10.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Michigan is gonna e ok. Forcier does have talent and Denard Robinson to come in and do some fancy shit is a good start. those two are true freshman who have shown more promise than pryor. when the offense gets their shit together the defense will be alright and in about 2 years Michigan will be MICHIGAN again.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:11 pm
why is that a problem? michigan and PSU aren’t exactly fighting over the same recruiting grounds.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Exactly. Michigan didn’t need to blow up the program; it needed a little bit of work to get to the next level. But people need to realize that it was not Rodriguez that decided to blow up the scheme (at least offensively). It was the administration.
People must also realize that it’s no long the big 2 and little 8. There is an 85 scholarship limit now. You can’t just sign 120 kids and know that you’ll find your players in that group while pulling all capable players from every other team in the midwest.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:13 pm
michigan isn’t fighting over any recruiting grounds in them midwest either. rich rod is looking down south and out west.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:13 pm
If the NCAA comes down on Michigan about practice-gate, Rich Rod is out.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:14 pm
i mean, they are getting Ohio and Michigan kids, but he is really expanding where they go.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:15 pm
because they have to play each other? and penn state has 2 of the top 6 players from michigan committed to next years class.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Tens of millions at stake there. I’m sure they have the Reggie Bush team investigating it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:16 pm
@Duder This just in, Michigan recruits nationally.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:18 pm
michigan has 1 player in the top 250 nationally ranked players for next years class. penns state has 13. try again cgb.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:18 pm
No way this happens. The NCAA doesn’t want anything to do with it. They’d have to come down on every football program, baseball program, equestrian program, etc.
Penn St does this every once in a while. They’re killing it this year but their 09 and 08 classes weren’t anything special.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:18 pm
yea, but penn state has always had great players…it’s actually coaching them up that’s been the problem all along.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:19 pm
depends on what rankings you look at. you could say that about michigan state as well for the rivals rankings. if you look at scout, i think michigan has 3 or 4 of the top 6.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Good for him. That’s where the speed is.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Michigan has been recruiting in PA for a while. Ty Law (obviously a while ago), Breaston, and Chad Henne are 3 that i can think of just off the top of my head.
/Penn State liked Morrelli better than Henne, so he’s the guy they really went after. fml.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Haha. Wasn’t Morrelli a five star can’t miss? I know a lot of PSU people were not happy the way the Henne recruitment went down.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
If the NCAA comes down on Michigan about practice-gate, Rich Rod is out.
from what I hear, Barwis was the issue here
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
The pro style QB named Bolden? Yeah we don’t recruit pro style QBs, smart guy. You truly don’t have a clue about Michigan Football. Just save it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
of all the rankings, recruiting’s are the least relevant or predictive of NC success. alumni circle jerking is what they’re good for.
i’m too lazy to look things up, as you are aware, but i’m guessing top-5 recruiting classes don’t produce many NCs. i know boosters and money are the cynical real deal, but winning is cool, too, isn’t it?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
penn state is much better now and has a better recruiting class coming in. i love the optimism of michigan fans.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
I would trade you in for 1,000 Paolos, without second guessing myself.
Recruiting nationally means they don’t just target Michigan, but they have firm recruiting bases throughout the country like Notre Dame, Tennessee and USC. Penn State generally takes their players from PA, VA, MD and the north east.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Wasn’t Morrelli a five star can’t miss?
Morelli went to my high school, and a buddy teaches there. I was told as he was being recruited that he was dumb as a rock, but he had a cannon.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Michigan made a living getting kids from Western Ohio and from Cleveland. That is now no longer a notable focus, which should be troublesome to longtime Michigan supporters.
How long will the alumni allow struggles to happen? The improvement this year has been marginal. It has to get better, right? A change will REALLY throw things in turmoil.
And as mentioned above, any NCAA interest will be a severe problem for RR.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
they don’t guarantee NC’s, but if you look at the rankings, they’re a pretty decent indicator. doc saturday goes into this in depth…head over there and poke around.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Rich Rod’s biggest mistake this year was bring Greg Robinson in to run the defense. How he could bring a guy in that his WVU teams torched on a yearly basis is astounding to me.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Penn State generally takes their players from PA, VA, MD and the north east.
true. they do really well in NY.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
That’s just because you love you some Paolo.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Cullen Christian is from Penn and we are getting him too. Just because a pro style QB we don’t want (because we have the #1 ranked dual threat and #1 ranked overall QB in the land) went to PSU doesn’t mean shit. PSU has good classes sometimes, then so do we. PSU has never and will never out-recruit Michigan on a year over year basis. It just won’t happen.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:25 pm
they are recruiting shitty players nationally. congrats cgb you are awesome!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Great post, Duffy. Makes sense. You’ve got your finger on the pulse of the program.
I’ll be uber-pissed if they oust RichRod and blow this up again.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Fuck, Michigan comes into Washington and snags a player every now and then. I can’t remember Penn State ever doing that.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this site holds some sort of bias toward the Jets and Michigan.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Snake Oil Salesman.
Step right up ladies and gentlemen, the RichRod spread offense revolutionizes, revitalizes, and rejuvenates the mind and soul. The magical elixir soothes pain, eases the mind, and enhances your romance. I’ve sold the spread to West Virginia, Ogdenville, North Haverbrook, and Brockway, and it put them on the map.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
they don’t guarantee NC’s, but if you look at the rankings, they’re a pretty decent indicator.
Mack Brown couldn’t coach his way out of a wet paper sack, but he can’t fuck up all that talent too much, so they win 10/year.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
how can i compete with 1,000 of anything, let alone paolos? that would be an unstoppable force.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
baseball threadjack:
Rays are dealing Iwamura to Pirates
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Why? We’re still pulling kids from Ohio. (see: Justin Turner. Top kid in Ohio from last year) There are many things that trouble me, but not focusing on Cleveland and Western Ohio is one of them.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm
and neither PSU or michigan will ever out-recruit ohio state, but that doesn’t mean all three aren’t relatively equal in the big picture.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I dug into this a bit for a blog I wrote for a couple of years ago, and basically it shows that recruiting rankings are a poor indicator of NCs, but that’s because NCs are fucking difficult to win. Recruiting rankings are a decent enough indicator of success overall though, and they do help get good recruiter/bad coach situations dealt with.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Fuck, Michigan comes into Washington and snags a player every now and then. I can’t remember Penn State ever doing that.
Mac something. he was a linebacker at the same time as Lavar and Brandon Short. I think his combine physical showed some sort of neck/spine problem and he never went pro
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm
When did this turn into a John Calipari thread?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pm
starting morrelli his senior year was a HUGE mistake. It blew the season.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pm
please…michigan gets ohio’s leftovers. justin turner is an excpetion at this stage in the game. tressel’s got those borders sealed.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Fetch, who’s going to Tampa?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
you mean the kid tressel didnt offer until he qualified academically when it was too late?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
@Fetch- thanks for that update. Zobrist will do
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Maggs, I was hearing Cullen Christain to WV. he goes to my old high school. friend tells me he’s a really nice kid.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I know. Very rarely do we pull one away from OSU (turner, koger). But it’s not like the entire state of Ohio doesn’t exist anymore. I’m saying UM still recruits Ohio.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
what sucks for penn state is ohio state keeps getting the top players from pennsylvania
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm
not sure yet Spicious. This link says it’s still being ironed out
http://blogs.tampabay.com/rays/2009/11/rays-working-on-iwamura-deal.html
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I mean the kid that grew up a UM fan because of Woodson and Tressel knew he wasn’t coming to OSU. That one.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Why? Zobrist a F-T 2B?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Got weird in here again today.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:34 pm
He is visiting for the OSU game and announcing the following Monday… that usually means good things for UM. That could change, but I doubt it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Zobrist a F-T 2B?

November 3rd, 2009 at 4:35 pm

November 3rd, 2009 at 4:36 pm
this is the accurate one. but he did have academic issues…still, OSU is loaded with young DB’s…and as good as turner probably will be, there’s no need to waste more schollys on that position.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Definitely. He was manly for my 5th place fantasy baseball team.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Zobrist was a beast most of the season. He sucked the last quarter of the season. Nobody beast for a whole season though.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:38 pm
It’s 4:35 and Michigan still sucks
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:38 pm
there prob. will be a catcher in there somewhere.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
so they win 10/year.
and this gets money from bowls. hoo ray.
I’d be more interested in how predictive recruiting rankings of individuals translate into NFL success. How do you guys like the comparison of high draft picks busting out to highly-recruited kids never being heard from again? age and maturity and sheer numbers would make the college recruits have a higher failure rate.
NFL teams are beaten down all the time about poor drafts, talent evaluation, but how about college coaches? bad drafting can ruin a pro team for years, but bad evaluation for colleges? not so much
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
love the college football experts on here taking offense to me saying penn state was having a very good recruiting class making it tougher for michigan to succeed in the b10. logic need not apply.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
How many days has it been since Michigan beat Ohio State? That usually comes up.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
there prob. will be a catcher in there somewhere.
his says probably not an established player. they do have a bunch of young catchers

You just don’t knwo what you are talking about. If you did and wanted to argue about it then that would be different, but you don’t. I wouldn’t argue with you about how best to be an asshole. You are the expert in that field. My knowledge would pale in comparison to yours, so I don’t do it. You should do the same in regards to Michigan Football
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:42 pm
@sir- who is the other team?
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:42 pm
I definitely am not saying it won’t be tougher. Obviously playing a better team every year will make it tougher to succeed. But I don’t think this was directed at me…
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:43 pm
so willingham’s recruiting classes weren;t highly rated?

plus, if his classes wrre highly rated, prives my guess again: best-rated classes do not mean NC success. sure they’re hard to win, but that’s theb prize the big’uns all want, and for all the rules violations and underhandedness and chest-thumping that goes into recruiting, i believe it’s well-positioned for ridicule

BCS games (potential)
Florida (SEC Champ) vs. Texas (B12 champ)
Oregon (P10 Champ) vs. Iowa (B10 champ)
Alabama (at-large) vs. Cincinnati (Big East Champ)
Georgia Tech (ACC champ) vs. Boise State (highest ‘other’)
Penn State (at-large) vs. Notre Dame (at large)
TCU will lose.

PSU-ND would easily be the 2nd most popular/talked-about bowl game.
Don’t think that the BCS is craving this matchup.
I might amend it to say GT-Bama for the offense-defense matchup … but that’d leave Cincy-Boise in a game nobody would give a shit about/watch (sorry, guys)

I’m not sure what this means. Either, it’s a joke from a movie that’s gone over my head or a feeble attempt at humor. Or something else.
