Brandon Spikes Reaction: From Shoulder Shrug to Controlled Outrage
1-liner, College Football November 3rd. 2009, 4:45pmBrandon Spikes: The Florida linebacker’s eye gouge is the talk of the SEC so far this week. Here’s Joe Henderson of the Tampa Tribune pontificating on the half-a-game suspension: “Meyer gave a proportional response. It’s a two-bit punishment for a two-bit offense, and that’s just as it should be. Given the same situation, no coach in America would have been any tougher. I understand not everyone will agree with that.” Well, that’s laughable. And now, someone outside of the state, Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel: “It was a dirty play and one with serious ramifications. There’s a reason violently poking your fingers at someone’s eye is a zero tolerance offense. The other guy can go blind. He has no ability to protect himself.” Urban Meyer badly bungled the suspension. The SEC, which obviously wants a Florida-Alabama SEC title game (ratings! Winner to the BCS!) is too afraid to step in. Pathetic, but not unexpected.

Spikes has and always will be a thug. He talks more shit and acts a fool more than anybody in college football, IMO.
The GA RB saying this does cut into the argument of suspending Spikes. Though, I initially thought the thug should’ve been shut down for the whole game (do you think if this was Alabama or LSU instead of Vandershit he would’ve been suspended for even a half?)

thats why you wear the visor. Suspension should have been a game.

This is not a big deal. I always preferred the attempted eye pokes/gouges to the nut shots, stomps and outright kicks to the head when I was in a pile.
He should probably be less blatant next time to avoid disturbing those who are unfamiliar with what goes on in a football game.

I think the one half suspension is stupid, probably deserved a full game which wouldn’t be a big deal in the end anyway since it’s just Vandy

That’s right, dollar signs.

I think that’s the biggest problem with that. Most people have no idea the snake antics that take place in the football pile. Spikes’ eye poke was more obvious than Richard Heene’s craziness.

You should be thankful. That loss legitimized your program and allowed you to backdoor your way into the Orange Bowl 2 years after.

No bias from the Tampa Tribune. No sirree.

The NCAA should step in. There needs to be a message that this kind of thugery is not accepted. This wasn’t heat of the moment shit like a late hit out of bounds. It was an eye-gouge for fuk’s sake. Twice.
Typical FLA school thug behavior…

If some guy from Florida International did this, nobody would give a fuck. Since it’s Florida, everybody acts like the guy punched a baby and wants him put in jail. Suspend him for a game and everybody can move on with their lives.

If they were playing any SEC school except Vanderbilt, there would have been no suspension whatsoever, I guaran-damn-tee that.
Two years ago they had a guy arrested for getting his girlfriend’s car out of an impound lot (or something like that) a few days before the LSU game, and he still played. Sure, the guy reneged on the charges, but you know that was shady as hell too.

But if somebody did it to Florida International, they’d miss half a game against an 0-11 team, and a former Clinton administration official would defend it.

The suspension is appropriate. This happens all the time in football, like every play. you guys have never stepped on a football field ever and have never had the luxury of getting your eyes gauged out.

Personally, I find what he did reprehensible, but this whole “eye gouge” hysteria is a bit over the top. I think it may have been more of a face wash or even the “jam his mouthpiece down his throat” move. Risky because of the bite reflex, but very effective for getting someones attention.
I still say the Georgia player did something to really piss him off.
