Dan Patrick Already Got a Job
Uncategorized July 12th. 2007, 2:50pm
Well, that didn’t take long. Less than a week after Dan Patrick announced his departure from ESPN, the Chicago Sun-Times buries a scoop - Patrick supposedly already has that syndication deal everyone’s been speculating about.
Also on the ESPN beat, Dan Patrick, who’s leaving the network after 18 years as one of its biggest stars, soon will announce his new deal: He’ll continue in radio and launch a new nationally syndicated program via Chicago-based Content Factory.
Jimmy deCastro, the former radio czar who ran Evergreen Media, Chancellor Media, AMFM Inc. and America Online, heads the independent media venture.
Couple things seem obvious to us here: the dish came courtesy of deCastro, since he’s nobody we’ve heard of, yet his name is bolded … is anything really added by revealing his name? And second: Patrick definiely had this deal worked out prior to leaving ESPN. No question.
This Means War (Sun-Times)
Shout-out to reader Jim Ulrich who spotted this and passed it along.

I really hope it turns into the Dan Patrick Libertarian Hour. (I know better than that, but it’d be disappointing for Dan Patrick’s new job to really be Dan Patrick’s old job.)

decastro is a big time mover and shaker in chicago radio. i think, though i could be wrong, he had a hand in sporting news radio when it was based in chicago at one point.
maybe it’s just me but i never got the impression that patrick’s radio show was such a hot ticket that so many stations would clamor for it. in the same time slot he was pretty much buried by rome and i read that patrick was crushed by mike and the mad dog in new york.

I love Patrick and Rome. I’m glad that Chicago gets to keep him around these parts. Classy guy for a classy city. Anyone know what station this content factory is supposed to be on the dial?
July 12th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
who says chicago is going to keep him around? he is syndicated. unless a chicago radio station picks him up that is. he’s not working for a chicago radio station.

“…seem obvious to us here: the dish came courtesy of deCastro, since he’s nobody we’ve heard of, yet his name is bolded…”
Actually, DeCastro is very familiar to long time Chicago talk radio listeners and readers of Robert Feders (author of the article) column. He may, in fact, been the source of the leak but that’s not the reason his name appeared in the column.

DeCastro ran AOL for about 12 minutes — until someone figured out that running an internet company isn’t the same thing as running a radio company. I’m sort of surprised that he kept it on his resume.

“everyone’s been speculating about”? You mean what I reported as FACT- over a week ago? And it came true. Way to link to yourself, though.
Good scoop.

Stay Sassy Dan!
SASSY!!!
July 12th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Dan may already be out the door. Van Pelt is hosting today and when he gave the e-mail address, he said: radio@espnradio.com
Before, when Patrick was out and there were fill-ins, they would still give the e-mail address as: danpatrickshow@espnradio.com.
July 12th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
Does this explain why DP was not on today? Scott Van Pelt is filling in. Or is DP flying back from San Fran? If I recall, he hosted the show out there for a few days.
July 12th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
My only question: When the afternoon radio slots are filled with pompous assholes like Patrick, Rome and Shrutebag, can the Stu Scott/Stephen A Smith “Quite Frankly Boo-Yah Hour” be far behind?
July 12th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Very odd show today - Van Pelt is reading the normal ad copy which includes a mention of Dan, and Dan’s ads still play during the break, but the show is being called “ESPNRadio”, and they’ve taken Dan’s name off the e-mail submission address.
It’s like they’ve scrubbed the show clean of Dan way early (just as the news of his next job came out). Or maybe this is just a strange way to do a tryout.

I’m wondering if, since the word is out on his (supposed) new gig, ESPN told him to leave now. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened. I guess we’ll just have to wait till Monday.
July 12th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Regardless of when DP leaves, it is going to leave a MASSIVE hole in the radio lineup. The afternoon used to fly by with Patrick and Kuselias, now it’s going to be X and Seibel (along with constant rotation of hosts, today it’s Russillo).
It would be nice if they gave either the Patrick or the SportsBash slot to Cueball Smith (who hosts AllNight). He’s out in LA though so not sure if they are going to do that.
July 12th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Seibel is the worst radio guy I’ve ever heard. He’s insufferable to listen to. How many times can you say “Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” or “Ummmmmmmmmmmmm” between words? Or, talk, in, commas, like, it’s, cool, to, do? He’s truly ESPN Radio’s embarrassing erection.
July 12th, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Val Pelt has always filled in nicely he would be a good replacement. Seibel I find very funny he and Coleman are especially good. Rusillo is well read and very quick. They have plenty of talent to pick from as long as it is not Cowherd….only on-air talent that makes me change the dial.

@IU Grad: Screamin’ Stephen A already has a horrendous radio program in NYC on ESPN radio (local). It’s quite frankly unlistenable. I don’t understand why powers that be won’t acknowledge that Screamin’ Stephen knows jackshit about most sports and sounds like a complete clown most of the time. I’ve heard before that he “tests well” (i.e., people like him) but I just cannot see how.
July 12th, 2007 at 8:58 pm
I don’t see any SportsCenter guys taking Dan’s spot. I think Van Pelt would just be adequate at best. I could see someone like Wilbon or LeBatard taking it. But I think they’ll go the same route they took when they found Cowherd. A relative unknown brought in to make waves. And while Cowherd is terrible right now, I actually liked him the first year or two he was on.

How is this Chicago deal supposed to be superior to what Enfuego had at the World Wide Leader? You only leave for greener pastures not for a lateral move or worst. The announcement had the impact of a pea in a lake- a bit of a yawner.
July 12th, 2007 at 10:28 pm
I’d rather listen so some club footed amputee then another day of Van Pelt. It definitely had the feel of he’s gone and forget he ever existed that’s so common in radio. Dan will be independent but driven by Sporting News.
July 12th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
Jimmy Decastro was also the mover and shaker responsible for Chicago’s Mancow. He is a big time player in radio; and Feder’s column is all about Media so it is the reason why he is bolded. That said, he probably did allow the leak.

there have been rumors that Lebatard might be taking his show national. I doubt the heavy non-sports content would go over well in Bristol.
July 13th, 2007 at 1:49 am
Patrick pulled a MikeTirico on a young Bristol producer. Expect the indictment to be announced in the coming days.
July 13th, 2007 at 2:41 am
JohnP- Patrick’s new radio show will be called “Octopussy”!
July 13th, 2007 at 4:45 am
JohnP- I feel bad for Showkiller; DP should never have taken advantage of him like that…

[Jimmy de Castro] made his mark in the early 1980s turning around Chicago’s legendary WLUP-FM, “the Loop.” In 1988, entrepreneur Scott K. Ginsburg merged his radio company with the Loop’s corporate parent to form Evergreen Media Corp. After the feds relaxed radio ownership rules in 1996, the company continued to merge with others, and de Castro eventually retired a multimillionaire in 2000 when Clear Channel Communications Inc. bought his company, AMFM.

Nowhere in the story does it say Patrick’s next show is a sports talk show. He may be looking to stretch himself in ways he couldn’t at ESPN - talk sports when you want, talk politics or movies or music when that’s what’s on your mind instead. How many years in a row can a guy act excited about debating who the AL MVP’s going to be?
July 13th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
What’s this about “pulling a Mike Tirico”?? I hadnt heard that one. Also, van Pelt is awful.
Awful.
July 14th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
I think Dan is taking a huge step back, what is he gaining? A radio show, he has a radio now for the BIGGEST network in sports where he is also an anchor. Dan, this is not way to get a Bob Costas type deal!!!
July 15th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
Frosty,
Rumor has it that Patrick and his wife long ago decided to live as man and wife in name only. Danny gets to play. Danny and the Missus get to keep stashing the checks from his seven-figure salary in the British Channel Islands, Bermuda, and the Caymans. That’s decade-old news in Bristol.

Puhleeeze, whomever is in charge at ESPN Productions, do not even
consider Steven Smith for the daily radio show. That awful weekly
tv spot you have given him is more than most mortals can take.
This man is so in love with himself that he can hardly let another
guest on his show get a word in.
Enough of this preachy ba$turd, get rid of him totally.
Mike Wilbon would be perfect for the daily radio show, but he
would never accept it. Please though, keep auditioning.
