1-liner, Baseball November 6th. 2009, 12:30pmHot Stove Already Simmering: The White Sox either traded for Kanasas City 3B Mark Teahen, or are about to. They’d be giving up Josh Fields and Chris Getz. Will Teahen ever pan out? There’s no actual news on Roy Hallday-to-the-Phillies, one columnist thinks it makes sense. Surely, the Mets would agree. We fully expect the Mets - having just watched their division rivals go to the World Series two years in a row, and have their crosstown rivals win another World Series - to go strong this postseason. Anything less than Holiday/Bay and a frontline starter (of the Lackey/Halladay caliber) and there may be outrage in Queens. And just a few minutes ago, JJ Hardy was dealt from the Brewers to the Twins for baserunning wizard Carlos Gomez. [Tribune, Daily News, MLB.com]

As a useful player? Sure, he is. He’s never going to be great, and he only was very good for half a season a few years ago.

Don’t know if it was already discussed but Diamondbacks picked up Webb’s option. so apparently he’s expected back healthy.

I’m sure a reasonable offer will be made, but won’t be up to snuff I’m guessing.

I hope JJ can turn it around in Minny, but I am not optimistic. The league found out fairly quickly he can’t hit any breaking stuff. Little nervous that the Brewers are taking on a project that the Twinkies gave up on, but they save ~$13million by letting Cameron/Hardy go. Need some pitching.

Very funny, but 2 of those seasons I picked him up as a FA on my fantasy team and he contributed to a championship both times.

20-25%, maybe? I get the impression he only stays if a giant market doesn’t develop for him and/or Albert resigns before he does. I’m not even sure he’d like to be here.

This. Like this trade for the Brewers a lot, JJ wasn’t coming back, other teams knew this, and they still got Gomez, who I’m not saying is great (or will be great) or anything, but is still a useful guy with some significant upside at a spot they needed.

@muwarriors love the hardy deal for the brewers, Gomez defense will be huge for the crappy pitchers, now if he can only learn OBP. Saving that money for pitching is biggest thing and the speed in the lineup with gomez and escobar will be a welcomed change.

That’s a surprise. Is there a chance he could still be traded? I heard he was not happy there at all.
The Twins have to decide on Cuddyer’s $10.5 million option by Monday. Should be interesting. That’s a big chunk of dough (for the Twins) for someone slightly above average. He killed it in September however.

general - yeah, and with the saved money they can go and get a 2 and 3 pitcher for the rotation without having to cut bait on gamel and hart. sign the Cat and you have an opposite bat backing up both mcgehee and hart if they stumble this yr. my guesses for pitchers in order of likely signing: doug davis, mark mulder, and washburn.

We’re going to throw the relatively unproven Alcides Escobar out as the SS. Trading the relatively good HR production and awesome defense from Cameron for shaky decision making, poor OBP, and next to nothing HR production from Gomez…all for a freaking shot at some sub par pitchers, that will average 4 and 2/3 IP and 5.75 ERA

Hardy is a great defender ( I think, can’t get Fangraphs to open). He and Punto should be the best up the middle combo defensively in baseball.
However, on a staff filled with flyball pitchers it’s more important to have a good outfield defense, and the Twins probably have the worst OF defense in the majors right now.

ms621- we need a new owner. i heard stories about the guy getting pissed off his first year as an owner because biggio and bagwell didnt play every spring training game.
he thinks every year the astros should make it to the world series. hes delusional. hes the only owner i have ever known but i wish someone would buy it from him so he can concentrate making billions of groceries.

Shame neither one of them can hit, Fetch. Hardy had no idea how to hit last year. Having a guy that averaged 2.4 Ks per game last season doesn’t sound like a fit for what the Twins typically do.
The Brewers now look a lot like the Astros. Not sure if that’s really a good thing. Actually, I know it’s not.

I don’t think we need a new owner, because Drayton is at least very involved and committed to the team doing well, unlike some other past owners of other organizations–Vince Naimoli in Tampa Bay comes to mind–who didn’t give two shits about their club. But Drayton thinks he can run the team like he runs the grocery supply business which made him a billionaire.
Baseball doesn’t work that way and until he realizes it, the Astros are going to be perpetually stuck in a cycle of trying to replicate success that we had in the 90s and early 2000s with homegrown players but without the same type of player devlopment system that we had then. In the 90s, the Astros had the best farm system in baseball. Starting with Gerry Hunsicker’s departure, little by little, it was taken apart in half baked trades. And then Tim Purpura utterly failed at convincing McLane of the need for signging draft picks to restock the pantry.
I’m not sold on Ed Wade yet, but he at least has pulled from Drayton a commitment to spending money on signing draft picks after the debacle of 2007, where we signed only half of our draft class. I think Wade restocks the pantry and we’re competitive again in about 2-3 seasons.

Yeah, lets pay Cameron another $10mil so he can hit home runs with no one on base and after playoff contention. Yeah, we shouldnt play one of the most highly touted prospects in the minors because that has never worked (Fielder, Braun). Yeah, as a small market team we should save $13mil when given the opportunity and play older vets over promising young players.

fair enough…its just that I would have rather given Hardy a half season more to try to get back to his old self at the plate. JJ could be putting up .220 at the trade deadline next year with 12 errors, he’s an upgrade over what the Red Sox have as their SS. Like you said…we need pitching, so I would have rather seen the Brewers deal with the Sox for a pitcher…

Maybe the people in front of him get on base more often and his RBIs go up. Just a thought, but if you give someone more chances for success, the odds are greater that that person will succeed.

@badger - i dont disagree, but i have faith in melvin that he made the right call seeing that the hardy deal was so transparent. he just said on the conf call that this trade was the best he saw compared to deals where they were offered pitching and he wanted to go with a guy that would help pitching (i.e. Gomez CF defense). all but flat out said they were going to sign Mulder and i think they will give a run at lackey and fail, and then go after washburn, and finally settling on doug davis and thus pissing off brewer nation.

@badger problem is Hardy won’t move over to 3rd and Escobar is a better shortstop then Hardy so you aren’t moving him. If the brewers had the money I am sure they keep Hardy and try to increase his value but it sounds like this was the best option and Gomez is 24 his obp should go up over the next couple years.
Now they just have to get Hart out of right.

Hate this trade for the Brewers. Would have thought we could have gotten more for Hardy than a guy that has a career avg of .246 and OBP of .292.
But he’s fast!!!!

In 348 major league games, the right-handed-hitting Gomez has batted .246 with 12 homers and 99 RBI, with 59 stolen bases. He has a .292 on-base percentage and .337 slugging percentage. Not exactly what you want to see from a player whose main tool is speed.

Sums up my thoughts:
Why do we trade a player with a bad year (.229/.302/.357) for a player with a bad career (.246/.292/.346). Granted Gomez is still young but even his minor league numbers don’t instill me with hope.
