BCS Shake-up Saturday: Alabama, Georgia Tech Survive, Four Others Not So Lucky
College Football November 7th. 2009, 7:19pm
Iowa lost. On one play - QB Ricky Stanzi was sacked, hurt his ankle, fumbled, and Northwestern recovered for a TD - the Hawkeyes went from possibly thinking BCS title game to the Outback Bowl. Notre Dame lost to Navy, 23-21, because the Irish could not score in the red zone. Charlie Weis can forget the BCS - and maybe another year in South Bend. (More during the week, obviously.)
Penn State gagged at home against Ohio State, losing 24-7, and now the Buckeyes control their Rose Bowl destiny. If Ohio State can win defeat Iowa, and avoid choking against sliding Michigan, the Big 10 should be theirs. The losses by Penn State and Iowa likely mean that the Big 10 will only send one team to the BCS. Oregon, which looked like perhaps the best team in the country after throttling USC last week, lost at Stanford, 51-42, perhaps opening up the Pac-10 race. (Though the Ducks still have the inside track.) Stanford RB Toby Gerhart rushed for a school-record 222 yards.
Georgia Tech won in overtime against Wake Forest, and Alabama remained unbeaten by defeated LSU, 24-15.

TBL, you should update this post to say that there was some more very, very sketchy officiating in the Alabama game.
Because it was blatant.

And now….my wife’s high school reunion.
/this night keeps getting better and better
//I’m 75% on my way to drunk already
///Hope I’m still married after tonight
November 7th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I realized I had the Georgia Tech game, and I turned over near the end of regulation (like 2 minutes left) and GT had a 4th and 8 from the 35, and a crummy kicker. So they were going to go for it. What ensued was the single worst play from a QB I’ve seen since Brady Quinn last QB’d the Browns.
The QB for GT dropped back, and felt quick blindside pressure, so he tried some nimble backward spin. He fell over and fumbled.
The good news for GT is that Wake sucks, and their QB got sacked on 3rd down not long afterward, setting up overtime.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I do not smell a Cinci upset tonight.
I do however smell some Bud Light and cage fightin shortly.
Heard something interesting on a SEC show this morning. Once RRod gets shitcanned at scUM, Miles goes to scUM and Saban goes back to LSU. Just thought that was an interesting thought process.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Saban would be a damned fool to go back to LSU.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
That divot is still there
November 7th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Brando started this crap last week on the Tony Barnhart show. I can’t see LSU letting Miles get away. The man can coach. If we didn’t have Saban I love to have him.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
LSU is the only two-loss team allowed in the BCS title game. You can’t get all the breaks.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Miles has a no penalty out in his contract per that convo. That right?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Does this mean ND is finally out of the TBL top 25?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Why Oregon….Why
November 7th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
I can see Les Miles leaving for Michigan this time. I really believe that the only reason he didn’t leave last time was because Herbstreit called it too early and put him in an unwinnable situation.
If so, does anyone have Brian Kelly’s home phone number?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Not sure about Miles, but I don’t think Saban has one.
They both get paid very well at great schools and are having success. Why would they leave?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
I would define a “break” as West Virginia and Missouri losing on the final weekend. I would define what I just saw as a fraud and a fix.
I can take losing the game fair and square. We all can.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Ohio State doesn’t even have to beat Michigan to go to the Rose Bowl. The first tiebeaker is head to head record. If they beat Iowa and lose to Michigan, they would have beaten all other potential 2 loss teams.
In reality, the winner of OSU/Iowa will clinch the Rose Bowl. So yeah, OSU is going to the Rose Bowl.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Because Les Miles will never be accepted by a pocket of the LSU fan base and everything he does will be compared to Nick Saban. Nobody needs that shit.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Really? He doesn’t seem like a quitter to me, but maybe the draw of returning to Michigan would more than he could resist. I hope not, he’s good for LSU and good for the SEC.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
From ESPN
Should read
SEC refs fingerbang LSU, book Bama trip to Atlanta
November 7th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Well for Miles coaching at his alma mater is my 1st inclination.
Saban, no idea. That guy is purely nomadic so I could see it.
And you are correct he can leave at any time and Bama is on the hook for the whole contract I do believe.

Bruised ego is personal matter?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
What a pussy Iverson is. I should be guiding this team to 9 wins, we shouldn’t even be trying to let Mike Conley develop.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I don’t think Saban is leaving because Jimmy Sexton isn’t planting a bunch of stories and rumors through his well-placed media contacts. Every time he leaves you know it months in advance.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I can remember when Oklahoma-Nebraska meant something. Big Red has really fallen.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Iowa…goodbye you fraudy piece of shit
Notre Dame…hello 7-5 (HAHAHAHA)
GT…welcome to the title talk
Bama….should thank the SEC…again
November 7th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
No.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
TBL, I realize you hate OSU, but just because they beat Penn St. doesn’t mean PSU choked. You obviously didn’t watch the game. PSU was never competitive, therefore they didn’t choke.
Everytime someone loses, that doesn’t make them a fraud/choker/exposed etc…
November 7th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
He seems content here. He has complete control, makes more money than he’ll ever spend, and is having great success. I can’t think of two many programs that he would leave for.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Jay, what year is the HS reunion? 10? 20? I went to my wife’s 10 yr last summer.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
At what point do you guys start shitting on next week’s big Mountain West game? Do you wait until midnight?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Remember that massive thread comparing the merits of Boise St. ahead of Oregon?
That was fun
November 7th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
two=too
November 7th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Everytime someone loses, that doesn’t make them a fraud/choker/exposed etc…
Notre Dame was exposed today as frauds who choked against a service academy. Otherwise, I agree with you WCT.

November 7th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
PSu losing at home with a shot to get back into the Rose Bowl mix is a choke. no way around it.
as for ‘Bama, i saw that pick. looked clean. but really, with J Lee at QB, LSu had no chance anyway. that guy’s the worst. let’s not make that big a deal about it.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
remember this past week when everyone was on Oregon’s nuts?
That was fun.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
This
November 7th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Most of us realized ND were frauds before today.
Can Fat Charlie keep his job?
November 7th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
ND was abysmal in the red zone. such an F’ing joke. weis is a goner. post on it at 8 am (seriously)
November 7th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Its not a choke when you’re not the better team in any way shape or form. They got debacled. If OSU had any kind of offense it would have been 50-7, and PSU’s lone TD was on 4th and goal and shouldn’t have counted.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
I went to my wife’s 10 yr reunion a few weeks ago. Be prepared for lots of drinks and forced polite conversation.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
the offense is Charlie’s domain. he couldn’t get it done.
weis gone. can’t imagine clausen sticking around based on the beating he took today.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Temple deserves to move up in the polls.
/ignores late FG victory over 1 win Ohio U.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
let’s not make that big a deal about it.
Why not? It’s not only a big deal in this game, but this is 5 different games where the SEC officiating has obviously and blatantly favored Bama and Florida. It’s inexcusable.
Do I think LSU would have scored. No. But the SEC took the game out of the player’s hands. It’s a big fucking deal, again this week.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
No sale. Lee had already driven them for one TD. If the INT happens, they need one score in 5 minutes. That can happen. No shit he wasn’t going to score when they were down two scores with two minutes left.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Jay, try to have a good time.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Penn State is this year’s Georgia. They’ll have a great looking record with zero quality wins.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Exactly!
November 7th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
I will. I’m officially out this time. My wife is dragging me by my hair.
November 7th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
If the parents of the players on PSU were to be mass executed as a consequence of a loss it still wouldn’t be a choke because they lost to a superior team (that showed they were superior. All game).
November 7th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Most of us realized ND were frauds before today.
I should have said “re-exposed.” They were creeping ever closer to that guaranteed BCS bid they didn’t deserve, so they needed to be re-exposed as frauds who barely beat Washington and Purdue, and lost to Michigan, etc.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Cincy UConn….Woooooo……………………
November 7th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
OSU just dump trucked Penn State to the point that they didn’t even try to score after getting an INT around midfield in the 4th quarter. That’s no choke.
“Choke” and “fraud” are the “it is what it is” of the TBL community. Learn new words.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Go BLue
November 7th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
I’m a Bama fan and it was a bad call. Replay official should have overturned the call. I would be much more satisfied if they had given them the ball and we had stopped them.
In all honesty the refs scare me more than Tebow in the SEC Championship game.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Agreed
November 7th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
i thought mine was way better than hers. the key: OPen bar at mine.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
Is Cincy-UConn on TV?
November 7th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Is Cincy-UConn on TV? On the East Coast on ABC. You’re getting OK/Neb.
I feel like a king today. It’s hunting season up here (it’s a youth weekend), and people have to ask permission to hunt on your property. So this 12 year old kid takes a deer off of our property, and as is the custom, he offers me up some of the choicest meats from the deer. It’s fucking awesome.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Holy shit Javon Best lokks hurt really bad.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Penn st. Didn’t gag…they got straight fucked up on both sides of the ball
go bucks….redemption game for pryor
November 7th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
TBL, what doesn’t an open bar help make better? Hell even rehab would be better with an open bar!
November 7th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
even though i am a penn state fan (moreso a florida state fan) this day reminds me how awesome college football is. in a matter of hours, TBL posts how this is a rotten day for college football fans, yet it turns out this is one of the greatest days for college football fans.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
That’s how it is here too dirt. People hunt on land right by our lake cabin and we get deer meat if we’re out there, which admittedly we rarely are.
I remember being at the airport a couple years ago around hunting season and people came from like Alaska and overseas to hunt here. It was weird.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
never been on the darryl clark bandwagon and this cements it.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
No “thumbs up” picture of Best. Dammit.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
I remember being at the airport a couple years ago around hunting season and people came from like Alaska and overseas to hunt here. It was weird.
you’ve got antelope, right? And elk. Every hunter wants an elk.
My neighbor’s daughter won a lottery for a moose permit, so I might get a little moose meat this year. I’m stoked for that. I can’t imagine wanting to kill a moose, but they are certainly tasty.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
though i am sure spencer is not around tonight, i am raising a glass in his honor.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
We have elk yea. No antelope. I also know next to nothing about hunting.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
I also know next to nothing about hunting.
you shoot shit with guns. It’s not rocket science. (by the way, you’ve got antelope) You try not to kill your buddy or your son, but to kill some shit.
We had a dad up here last year shot his high school sophomore son. They were both hunting turkeys. It was shitty. I live in constant fear of somebody shooting my dogs, all throughout November.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
My uncle has been up to Alaska twice to go moose hunting. The first time he brought back a huge head. The second time, he just went to help his friends and didn’t kill anything.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Ive never seen an antelope in my life. I really dont think we do
November 7th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
google tells me we’re on the edge of the antelope habitat. Fair enough. Maybe I have seen one and don’t remember it.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
I guess I mean you, north dakota. Wyoming is where they really are.
Anyway, you shoot things with guns, and then cut their guts out and chop them into edible pieces. That’s your hunting lesson for the day.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Cut them open and sleep inside of them for warmth.
/Hoth’d
November 7th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

I pretty much already have to. My wife’s got sonic hearing for dudes getting punched on the telly.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
LSU v Bama went exactly as I thought it would — tough defense and then Bama would find a way to win.
Oh well. This was a retooling year for LSU.
So where’s my MMA live blog?
November 7th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
They’re not playing, are they? Are you going to hang around and watch the cage fighting?

10-9 Silva, couple nice rights and a few elbows but nothing killer. Good 1st Rd.
Verdum using his Muay Tai as show currently.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Good fight, gonna be a split decision. I’d give it to Silva.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
