john-wall-kentuckyWith a whimper, the college basketball season opens tonight. Isiah Thomas and FIU play defending national champion UNC. The Tar Heels are 31-point favorites. There isn’t an enticing game on the schedule this week. Call it a soft opening. For us, the season begins Thanksgiving week with the Maui Classic. If you’ve had time to scan the Top 25, and the Naismith candidates, and the list of all the great freshman, then you’re ready to make bold preseason predictions. And we’ll make it interesting this year – if you can nail the Final Four today and National Champ in the comments below, we’ll reward you with a “prize” valued at $200. Additionally, feel free to make a Player of the Year pick, and take a stab at the All-American team. Ours after the jump.

Final Four
Kentucky – Freshman + returnees = early struggles. Fine by February.
Kansas – Deepest team in the country, no discernible weakness.
West Virginia – Only lost one of top seven players. Need to avoid off-court issues.
Texas – Return three inside guys (hoping James quits floating to perimeter) and add two outstanding freshman guards plus transfer Jai Lucas (Florida).

National Champ
Kansas

We’ve been hyping Chris “Top Flight” Wright for two years now. He’s probably the best dunker in the nation.

All-American Team (as if picking a starting lineup)
John Wall, Kentucky, guard
Luke Harangody, Notre Dame, forward
Willie Warren, Oklahoma, guard
Cole Aldrich, Kansas, center
Kyle Singler, Duke, forward

luke-harangody-notre-dame-irishPlayer of the Year
Luke Harangody, Notre Dame – He’ll score 25-30 a night, the Irish will be dancing, and the people who pick these awards like seniors over freshman.

We thought about farming out our college hoops coverage this year – as we’ve done to an extent with the NFL, college football, and baseball, but our lust for college hoops is simply too great. Hell, we nailed the Field of 65 in March! Plus, we have to stay on top of this stuff for our nerdy fantasy college hoops team. First installment of the weekly Top 10:

1 Kansas
2 Michigan State – Only concern is interior depth.
3 Kentucky
4 Texas
5 North Carolina – Weakest guard play in the Top 10.
6 Purdue – Returns everyone, still lacks “take over” guy.
7 Villanova
8 West Virginia
9 Washington – Best in the West – which is very down – narrowly ahead of California.
10 Tennessee – Return everyone, but can Bruce Pearl coach the ballhogs?
