Monday with the Irish: All is Not Lost!
1-liner, College Football November 9th. 2009, 10:15amNotre Dame: Fallout from the stunning loss to Navy - the first time since 1936 that an unranked Navy team defeated a ranked Notre Dame team - continues. One columnist thinks the Irish should fire Weis now so they can be out front chasing all of their pipe dreams (like Urban Meyer). But here’s a vote for keeping Weis. In scanning the Notre Dame message boards this weekend, everyone seems to be in play - we saw love for everybody from Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson (personnel isn’t there; would need to overhaul the offense) to Utah’s Kyle Whittingham (he’s a member of the Mormon Church). We took a look at Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops yesterday. And no matter how hard the media tries, Jimmy Clausen won’t talk about leaving early for the NFL. Would the Irish keep Weis if he can convince Clausen to stay for one more year? Today the media will be consumed by the NFL and maybe the start of college basketball. By Wednesday, talk should turn back to the Irish and Weis. Pittsburgh Saturday, obviously, is must-win. [SI, South Bend Trib]

stunning loss? hardly
November 9th, 2009 at 10:19 am
, Jimmy Clausen won’t talk about leaving early for the NFL.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:20 am
hahahahaha fail.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Weis will be outcoached by Wanny’s mustache this Saturday.
I thought Clausen should have announced he was going pro at half time.
Bring in Chuckie.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:20 am
I am usually one of those people who thinks that teams (especially college football ones) generally fire the coach too soon. In this case, you couldn’t fire Weis soon enough IMO. Sure the guy can recruit, but when it comes down to coaching the games, his teams generally look unprepared and not ready especially in big games. Weis is in over his head here and his record shows it.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Maybe not stunning, but I didn’t expect it.
Brian Kelly makes a lot of sense. What other high-profile jobs will be out there after this season?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:21 am
This Mandel article about Notre Dame is better. The Irish, as a program, are on par with (or lesser than) Northwestern and Stanford.
Sure, he’s trying to prop up a couple of Big Televen and Pac 10 teams, but that’s what you expect from Stewie.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:21 am
This isn’t stunning because ND sucks. Bad.
Also, this is the only place I hear about Claussen “maybe possibly thinking about in the future” declaring early.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:21 am
the first time since 1936 that an unranked Navy team defeated a ranked Notre Dame team
More evidence that ranking ND was/is laughable.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Yikes. Who cares about the Notre Dame job, when do the Jim Harbaugh to Michigan rumors start?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Navy kicked our ass. Plain and simple, in every phase of the game. I explained why Weis ahs to go yetserday, but there were some costly errors by the players (Re: Fumbles by clausen and paris, Floyd and Clausen getting mixed up on a route, terrible coverage on the touchdown pass).
Just a perfect mix of a shitstorm. I talked to some buddies on campus, everyone is angry, but they’ll get over it. If (ducks early) ND wins out, Weis will stay. I will be angry about it, but he won’t get fired.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Notre Dame football will be back after they beat Pitt.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:25 am
What’s so crazy about this. He plays for a team where the d will never be good and he’s being projected as a first round pick. He’s seen what happend to Bradford and Tebow this year. He is an idiot if he doesn’t leave.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Notre Dame football will be back after they beat Pitt.
so 2015?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:27 am
I didn’t say it was crazy, I said this is the only place I’ve read about him leaving early. If TBL is correct on it, then kudos for putting up with everyones shit.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Never. Next Question.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:28 am
How many coaches turn the Notre Dame job down this time around?
/OSU is a much, much better job and still waiting for TBL to explain how it’s not one of the elite programs all-time.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:28 am
when was the last time Notre Dame was good?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:28 am
Ok, put up or shut up time. I’ve got one more in me. ND will beat Pitt on Saturday… who wants action?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:29 am
it’s stunning only considering the implications - Notre Dame’s potential BCS cowl game opportunities, Charlie Weis’ hot seat, etc.
it’s not stunning considering their actual performance this year - narrow wins over Michigan State (5-5), Purdue (4-6), Washington (3-6), and Boston College (6-3) added to a loss to Meechigan (5-5).
November 9th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Just another reason why Cotto should win.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:31 am
So ND fans really think they’ll beat PITT?? I dont see it, Pitt will win by a couple of TDs
November 9th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Notre Dame with trips to Pitt and Stanford left and a home game against UConn. They could seriously lose out and that could not be classified as a “shock.”
November 9th, 2009 at 10:33 am
interesting misspelling by me there.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Seems like a foregone conclusion to me that Brian Kelly will be the next coach at Notre Dame.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:35 am
This is funny. As recently as two and a half months ago people were saying Paul Johnson couldn’t be successful with his offense at Georgia Tech. Now they want him at Notre Dame? Make up your mind, people.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:36 am
I don’t want Paul Johnson at ND. I don;t trust anybody at the ND message boards. There me, but 100kx more irrational. I want Gruden goddamnit.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:36 am
popping my TBL commenting cherry right now, its only fitting that i do it on a subject that i despise(surprise surprise) just slightly less than new york right now.
bob stoops is losing sam bradford this year, i’m sure he would gladly accept the move to notre dame after john candy jr. has been sent packing.
via adam shefter, larry johnson is set to be waived by the chiefs, assuming no one claims him, what teams sign him as a free agent, if any?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:36 am
lefty, what was the personnel like at GT before Johnson took over?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:37 am
brian kelly.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Bsanders Im with Cotto. Fuck Pacquio hes all hollywood now. Did you see him singing on a Philippines Good Morning America? Fuck that guy.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Notre Dame should just get it over with and join the WAC. We know they can compete with those teams.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:39 am
GT Coaches have a good history with ND.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:39 am
Yeah, he’s got a sweet gig he seems to like right now and will basically have his pick of any open NFL job, but sure, he’s going to slum it and go to ND. Who’s your second choice, Bellicheck?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:39 am
. ND will beat Pitt on Saturday… who wants action?
Name your terms…
November 9th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Straight up, 100% pro style. Nesbitt was a shotgun QB that played in a spread offense in high school. Bay Bay Thomas is the type of receiver you see at programs that run a pro style offense. The offensive line was a big, powerful type like you see in pro style as well. Johnson has yet to fully implement his personnel.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Of all the “mega fights” we’ve gotten in the past 3-4 years, this is going to be the best one by far. Cotto is gonna knock out pacuiao in the 7th.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Spence, fuck you and those cheating OSU bastards. Fuck Joe and his predictably uber-conservative gameplan, play tight, play not to lose, and they lose.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:42 am
Oooo, site banishment until 2009.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:42 am
The Harbaugh stuff is already starting … except the banter is Michigan.
A few people floated Harbaugh-to-ND, but it was noted that ND already dipped into the Stanford well, and that didn’t work out so good.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:42 am
sweet punishment there Jersey.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:43 am
I don’t think you do. I don’t think the classic West Coast offense works well in College Football.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:43 am
who wrote that? hasn’t GT been Top 25 all season? didn’t he win at his last stop? I must have missed those comments.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:43 am
I mean 2010… my bad.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:45 am
PSU got beat by the better team, plain and simple.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:45 am
coop you really cant blame joe. Hardest decision of the day for that guy is what jello he should eat. You cant believe hes really designing that game plan.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:45 am
It’d be different though because Harbaugh’s white.
Seriously, I think ND would be better off going with a defensive-minded head coach (Muschamp?) and then hire a solid OC.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:45 am
As smart as the commenters are here, this place is a gold mine for classic generalizations.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:45 am
See you in 2010 Jersey.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:46 am
Fuck Pacquio hes all hollywood now.
Complete fail, tampa. But I’m also on Cotto this weekend.
larry johnson is set to be waived by the chiefs, assuming no one claims him, what teams sign him as a free agent, if any?
The ‘Skins will make a move for him. The need a few more players with off-the-field issues.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:46 am
COuld it be worse now? Mediocrity since Lou left. My friends dont even give me shit anymore about ND. They figure, what’s the point?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:47 am
I was thinking Charlie Strong this weekend, just afraid to say it because sadly, I don’t think ND hires another black coach for a while. But I would be thrilled if Strong got the job.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Not necessarily here, TBL, although illformula and Jay V both said he was overrated. That’s been the knock on Johnson since he’s been hired: “that won’t work at the big time level” or “you won’t be able to recruit”, etc.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Still waiting for Ill to say I accept.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Oooo, site banishment until 2009.
Deal.. On the condition that, should I lose, I can comment again when Bama beats the Gators in the SEC title game?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:49 am
I support this fact.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Funny thing is, people said the same thing about Urban Meyer when he went to Florida.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:49 am
I’ll give you the next day and that’s it.
/you know I meant 2010 right?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:50 am
I’m gonna go ahead and float a few names to Notre Dame myself since it seems like the in thing to do:
Jim Zorn
Mickey Andrews
Vince Young
Steve Nash
Miley Cyrus
Barack Obama
that was fun…and just as significant as Jim Harbaugh, John Gruden, Urban Meyer, Paul Johnson, and whoever else is being “floated”.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Wonder if Nebraska wishes it had Paul Johnson right now.
great defense has zero offense (9th scoring in Big 12, 6th in rushing)
http://www.big12sports.com/ViewContent.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=10410&CONTENT_ID=98674
GT No. 1 scoring offense in ACC, No. 1 rushing off in ACC

November 9th, 2009 at 10:52 am
i’m hoping zorn stays around that way the eagles won’t have the worst in game coach in the nfc east
November 9th, 2009 at 10:52 am
I REALLY can’t wait for the current old fogies network of sports writers to die so people stop sucking off Notre Dame and everyone accepts them for the mediocre program they’ve been for over a decade.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:52 am
As long as Johnson has a QB they will win 8 games every year at least. Now, if Tech fans are happy with that and an occasional 10-11 win season (which I bet they are) Johnson will be a saint in ATL. The problem is once he has 4-5 of those seasons, but he can’t win a title (and he never will at Tech for a number of reasons) I wonder if expectations will get to him. I think he is a top-10 coach in football, but his system will require a game-changer at QB and I’m not sure he will get one when he will have to compete for spread-option players against the top spread players. Nebraska fans can attest to this, but Tech will learn very quickly that the opttion is an amazing regular season system, but when you give a team a month to prepare for it, it loses a lot of its luster (see LSU vs GT in the Chick-Fil-A bowl last year).
November 9th, 2009 at 10:53 am
who? I refuse to believe that. sorry.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:54 am
It was said by a lot of people down here. Now all we say is TAKE THE ND JOB AND RUN!!!
November 9th, 2009 at 10:54 am
go on…..
November 9th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Site banishment isn’t any fun. I like forced gravatars or signature lines. Didn’t irish have to say that he gives LeBron James blumpkins for a week? That was funny (if I remembered it correctly).
November 9th, 2009 at 10:55 am
I’ll give you the next day and that’s it.
/you know I meant 2010 right?
Yeah… done and done.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:55 am
TBL: You are forgetting that Tech’s defense is god-awful. If they play Cincy in a bowl game (very likely) the final score might be 65-63…and I’m not even joking.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Never under estimate how low andy can go
November 9th, 2009 at 10:57 am
hear hear!!
November 9th, 2009 at 10:57 am
You might as well throw pedobear in there too.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:58 am
This doesn’t hold up in my mind either ……UF runs an unconventional offense. People have had a month to prepare and they still win.
The key for GT is personnel. If Johnson gets great personnel, it won’t matter. Just like at UF.
If GT continues to win, great players will begin to take them seriously.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Well, Tony Barnhart for one. It was before Meyer arrived and his offense at Utah was branded as “gimmicky” by a lot of people.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:58 am
pedobear is black so he has no shot. none of my “floaters” are black.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Pretty much anything written by columnists that cover the following schools, as well as pretty much any/all blogs that cover the same: Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State, Auburn. Did I leave any out?
Yep, we’ll take that.
I don’t anticipate expectations will be an issue.
A lot more went into that loss against LSU than having a month to prepare for the option. That bowl game is a house of horrors for the Jackets, always has been. Special teams were dreadful, and the team had been walking around town for a month with everybody telling them how good they were. Just not a good situation all-around.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:59 am
@lefty - I was wrong on GT this year. You win. Though, I still believe Crompdaddy throws a better ball than Nesbit.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Fuck Joe and his predictably uber-conservative gameplan, play tight, play not to lose, and they lose.
i was more pissed at galen hall, personally
PSU got beat by the better team, plain and simple.
i agree
November 9th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Nebraska did not beat the big boys (Miami, Florida, Tennessee) until they got the best player in college football on their team (Frazier). They used to run through the Big 8 like it was nothing (and it wasn’t awful) and then they would play a team who studied their offense for a month and they’d lose. The option is killer when you only have 1-2 weeks to deal with it, but when you have a month you can pick up its tendencies. Give Meyer, Saban, Caroll, Muschamp et. al a month to look at Tech’s offense and the game will not come as easy for them. Nebraska had this issue for year until they got better players. I just don’t think Tech will be able to out recruit those big schools and get those players. If Johnson was at a school like ND, maybe he could get them, but even still his offense will not put out WRs or QBs to the league, and that makes it very hard to sell to a kid these days.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I don’t know that overrated is the term I used. But nevertheless, most of my pre-season comments were premised on the ACC being a much better conference then it has turned out to be. I congratulate Georgia Tech on a great season. I could go on and say that I really don’t think they are any better than Tennessee or Arkansas, but I won’t open that can of worms…
November 9th, 2009 at 11:01 am
Pedobear is asian
November 9th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Florida has the best players in the nation. If you have the best players in the nation you can run any offense you want and it will work. Does Tecg have the best players in the nation? Do you think Tech will ever have he best players in the nation?
November 9th, 2009 at 11:02 am

nebraska ran more of a power option, but kept getting it’s ass kicked by florida speed teams. once they started recruiting fast guys from florida and cali, the option worked.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Being a Husker fan, I’m happy with Pelini. Love Paul Johnson, but after suffering thru the Bill Callahan all offense/no defense years, I’m happy to have a Defensive-minded coach.
And name another team that lost their starting QB, both WR’s, and almost the entire O-Line that is having a great year offensively. Doesn’t happen very often.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Let’s get it on….
November 9th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Don’t forget they are now running the fourth string RB because of injuries and having to kick off the backup RB due to a failed drug test. NEB’s offense is putrid, but there are several reasons for it outside of them just not being good. That game against OU was painful to watch if you like offense. NEB’s defense is sick though. Best D-line in the country I think.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:05 am
my floaters are only black if i drink too much pepto
November 9th, 2009 at 11:05 am
I wholeheartedly agree with this. Nebraska shifted it’s option from focussing on the I-Backs to the QB’s–Frazier, Scott Frost, and Eric Crouch. That’s when things turned around–not that they were terrible before.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:06 am
I don’t think Neb ever lost to UT or UF in a bowl game, mostly it was Miami or FSU. Anyway, yes to your point from 87-93, but they won plenty of bowl games vs those type of teams in the 70s. Different era though, I acknowledge that.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Get it on the floor
November 9th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Maybe not the best. But let them string together a couple ACC Championships in a row. They could easily compete for the best.
If I’m a top running back in high school, a team that runs the ball 90% of the time AND could be in the “hunt” for a BCS game and maybe a MNC appearance is rather enticing.
If they had any type of defense, they would be undefeated. That would put them at #4 in the BCS right now.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:07 am
I still can’t believe that people don’t cite Tommy while blowin’ Tebow for best QB evers. Frazier was fucking unbelievable.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:08 am
Always knows where my head is at.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I’ll be sure to keep up the occasional hip hop lyrics in your absence.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:09 am
You just need to hope Miami loses twice a year in conference. If they pick up some speed it will be lights out for the rest of the ACC because FSU is folding big time. It looks like it will be GT, VT and Miami for the next few years in the ACC.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:10 am
You can’t keep up any references while I’m sleeping when you’re banished dude.

Yes he was. My brother and I had the pleasure of watching him play from the 50 yardline his entire career thanks to my dad’s tickets. Those NEB teams were so good.

November 9th, 2009 at 11:14 am
when beating pitt would be considered an upset you know your program is in trouble
November 9th, 2009 at 11:14 am
Any guesses on where TBL has ND ranked?
November 9th, 2009 at 11:15 am
A.) This whole post is about much trouble ND is in… shit tons
B.) Pitt is ranked pretty high… and is a good team.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Did Charlie spend the press conference afterward complaining about their low ranking?
November 9th, 2009 at 11:16 am
19. 3 losses in the final minute.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:16 am
You can’t keep up any references while I’m sleeping when you’re banished dude.
Don’t worry, TBL sweats both ND and the Jets enough to cover that front. And you can still email him tips regarding ND’s next coach or NYJ’s top 10 pick in 2010.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Lol, I’m gonna miss you dude. I’ll rock your gravatar while you are away.

Butch Davis walked into a full cupboard, has recruited extremely well…and UNC STILL SUCKS ASS.
This was supposed to be UNC’s year…I seriously doubt their “year” will ever come.

Jersey and ill: Al Sharpton contacted me and asked me to intervene, as he knows I do wonders moderating discussions between the races. He will picket TBL if he loses any prominent African-American commenters, resulting in a huge loss in ad dollars from the “be your own caricature” and “watch the lady lose her FUPA” advertisers. This year long ban is null and void. Pick new terms.

which one has a close personal relationship with God? that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet (but is does show up every time an announcer has 5 seconds to kill)

somebody needs to step in and pull that stupid bet off the board. You never want to lose Jersey Yo after Notre Dame loses. You want to lose him after Notre Dame wins.
The principals should swap.
