Big Brain’s Big Ol’ College Football Top 25
College Football November 10th. 2009, 1:00pm
Here are the actual rankings. Let the wild rumpus start. By the way, if you care - my Final Four is Texas, Kansas, Kentucky and … wait for it … Seton Hall. Gotta grab a sleeper, right?
1. Florida - Haven’t lost since September of 2008. That counts for something. SoCar game probably won’t be the trap everyone wants it to be.
2. Alabama - The StarkVegas and Auburn games could be traps, but should be wins. All about Atlanta and December. Julio Jones is beast.
3. Texas - No perceptible challenges here, as you know.
4. Cincinnati- QB controversy and the Brian Kelly-to-Notre Dame stories = dangerous game vs. WVU Friday.
5. TCU -Defense is tops, don’t believe they’ll sniff the BCS title game — although Horned Frogs vs. Florida or Texas could be an interesting game.
6. Boise State - Let’s go Vandals!
7. Georgia Tech
8. Ohio State
9. USC
10. LSU - Is it possible that the Tigers are the best at-large team outside of the Big 3 in the country, yet won’t be part of the BCS?
11. Pittsburgh - If the Irish couldn’t stop the option, how will they stop Dion Lewis?
12. Iowa
13. Miami
14. Oregon - Laughable: With a loss to Arizona, Ducks could be the 3rd highest Pac-10 team in the rankings, but going to the Rose Bowl.
15. Arizona
16. Utah
17. Penn State
18. Oklahoma State
19. Wisconsin
20. Oregon State
21. Virginia Tech
22. BYU
23. West Virginia
24. USF
25. Stanford

Why is the Idaho Vandals song with the Boise St. tag?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I’m going to try my ass off to get those ATL tickets for Dec 5th.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Mississippi State doesn’t think so.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Fixed.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Pittsburgh - If the Irish couldn’t stop the option, how will they stop Dion Lewis?
Goodbye, Jersey.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
I’m working on getting a press pass for it. It would be sweet as fuck if I could swing that.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Where’s Notre Dame?
/TBL’d
November 10th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
bulldog i’m guessing they play UI this week. and vandals is best mascot name in country
/scott linehan’d, dennis erickson’d, mark schlereth’d, mike price’d, john l. smith’d
November 10th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Seton Hall? this guy is too much. good post Big Brain. i can live with the #13 ranking and no (FL) next to it.
No Clemson?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Is there anything they’ve done to prove this?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Didnt Ohio State almost lose to Navy?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
SEC refs will make sure
November 10th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Even as ND blind as I am, this is not the year to bet on the Irish, unless you are betting against them
November 10th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
1. Texas
2-120. who gives a shit.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Yet they are ahead of them.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
ATL Dan, will you be here all week, and should we try the veal?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Julio Jones is not nearly as good as AJ Green.
but does he win games? No.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Oregon should be ahead of Boise St.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
1. Texas
2-120. who gives a shit.
Clown needs a dirty sock, asap.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
like Green a lot, i still go Jones right now if I’m an NFL GM. i go Dez Bryant over both, though.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Texas, Bama and Fla are the same team. Look at UT against OU. They faced a great defense and scored 16 points and McCoy looked average. The same will happen when they face Fla/Bama. But Texas has a damn good defense so the game will be low scoring as hell meaning one turn over could be the difference. I don’t know who I’d pick to win the game, but I think it would be an ugly one to watch.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
how is LSU behind USC?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
GT - who else has played UF and Bama and been competitive with both?
Arkansas gave UF a run, but ‘Bama smoked ‘em.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
wait, how is Ohio State ahead of USC?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Still waiting for a reason on why the Idaho Vandal’s fight song is with Boise St. Am I missing some sort of joke by BBOB?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
TBL is Matt Millen?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Wait, how is Oklahoma St. ranked above Wisconsin?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Goodbye, Jersey.
ill: I’m afraid we’ll all be singing this song to Jersey
Scandal > Vandal
November 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
How is USC ahead of Washington?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Unbelievable. Two losses with that schedule, they shouldnt be sniffing top 10.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Why on Julio? His production SUCKS. Yes, he looks like a badass, but he doesn’t play like one. Last time I checked running routes and catching balls thrown to you is more important than looking like a tank. But that’s just me.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Depends on what your need is as a team on Jones vs. Green, but Bryant doesn’t belong.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Worst. Bet. Ever.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Boise St does play Idaho.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Ohio State has improved since the September matchup and USC has gotten worse?
/puzzled look
November 10th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Last time I checked running routes and catching balls thrown to you is more important than looking like a tank
Shannon and Sterling say you can do both
November 10th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I don’t know about this, Lefty. Bryant is pretty damn good.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Boise St does play Idaho.
Ok that’s starting to make sense then.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
is this bet w/ the points or straight up?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
Out of the at large teams, it’s very possible that TCU is a better football team than LSU.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
What was Jersey’s bet?
November 10th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Actually, yes he does. In fact, AJ Green is pretty much the only reason why Georgia has wins this year.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Green is pretty darn good, just think if he had above a JV level QB tossing him the ball.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Worst. Bet. Ever.
ill: I’m afraid we’ll all be singing this song to Jersey
Even as ND blind as I am, this is not the year to bet on the Irish, unless you are betting against them
Ok… scratch that. I’ll see you guys/gals in 2010.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
TCU is badass.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
He’s not as good as Green or Jones. And then there are kinda sorta some character issues.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Green is the best receiver in college football I’ve seen. Jones was last year, but McElroy is just pathetic and can’t get him the ball. That being said, Jones isn’t doing much to help him. He has dropped a lot of balls, and can’t be getting that open downfield. Green is double teamed as well, yet still makes plays. Jones almost seems like he got too big and stiff in the offseason. Green is much more fluid and quick in my opinion.
Also, we’ll be ranked in a week or two.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
You’ll see it next year when this guy is throwing to him.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Tennessee
November 10th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Bet is staight up.
CJ - Jersey bet me banishment until 2010 on the ND/Pitt game this Saturday.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Losing to Purdue is an improvement?
At this point there is too much turmoil in the rankings to bitch about certain teams higher than others. O$U, USC and Oregon are all going to be f’d up the rest of the year unless one of them loses some more.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
yup, yup
Not playing horseshoes here CJ, Sweater Vest couldn’t figure out that goofy triple option. I cant respect that stuff
/Jets’d
November 10th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
I agree…but Green was better last year, too. Like you said, he is so fluid in his routes and his hands are phenominal.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Details here, but the way I understand it, if ND beats Pitt, ill can’t comment until 2010 (except the day after the SEC Championship). If Pitt beats ND, Jersey can’t comment until 2010.

/Scandal rocks
November 10th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Valid point, but the Bucks looked damn solid Saturday. Pryor made plays and proved that he can play this game when he is prepared, but ultimately what won that game was the defense. fucking stellar. Might be the best in the country coming into next year.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
OH MY GOD JULIO JONES SCORED A TOUCHDOWN. QUICK SOMEONE BLOW HIM.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I don’t understand banishment bets. It’s too much fun here to bet that.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Gods: I think they were neck and neck last year. They were different receivers imo. Jones was just physical and borderline unstoppable, while Green was athletic and dynamic with the ball in the air. They both made plays, but in different ways. I feel Jones has almost gotten too big. He just seems stiff. Green has continued to get better.
/we shut down both of them
November 10th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Let’s temper the Lane Kiffin love, there Jort Heisman.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
And this year, Jones isn’t even a top 5 SEC receiver. He hasn’t done shit.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
done.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
but Lane Kiffin has turned Jonathon Crompton into the man.
/true story
November 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
He’s got fewer catches, yards, and TDs than Bay Bay Thomas.
/yeah, I brought it up in the night thread last night
//facts are facts
November 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Jon Crompton: Your SEC leader in touchdowns.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
If only you could play against Joe Cox every year. His pick against UT when he dropped the snap and just threw it away, but couldn’t get it out of bounds, may be the worst pick I’ve ever seen. Dude can’t graduate fast enough.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
lefty - just answering a question.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I think we should bet mandatory commenting. For example, next time Paolo goes off on gay people, the loser of the bet should be forced to continue the conservation with him for everyone else’s entertainment.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I just took a direct TBL quote, and decided, ala TBL, to use an avatar description instead of username. Apparently it was a little too inside baseball.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
v4l: Agreed. Just picked that song because it fit w/ ill’s comment. Johnny McEnroe upgraded when he married Patty Smyth over the walking crackpipe Tatum O’Neal

November 10th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

For example, next time Paolo goes off on gay people, the loser of the bet should be forced to continue the conservation with him for everyone else’s entertainment.
As fun as that sounds, I can’t afford losing anymore brain cells.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Defense is definitely nasty. I think I’ll only come around on Pryor from this year if he plays well against a good team in the Rose Bowl. His throws against Purdue cannot be forgotten.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
While that was bad, I have about 2 hours of Jon Crompton footage I could show you that is soooooo much worse.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I don’t understand banishment bets. It’s too much fun here to bet that
all depends
November 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
true that.
CLEARLY Green is better. Pretty sure Alshon Jeffrey and Greg Childs are as well. The LSU guys maybe too.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
2 hours? is that the abbreviated version?
that being said, completely different player the past 5 games.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
No it isn’t. CFB has never been more popular and ND has sucked for 10 years (at least). ND is not what they once were and they will never get back to their former (1980’s) level.
Touche.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Hell, Gerald Jones is better than Julio Jones this year. Alshon Jeffrey for sure.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
No doubt Miz. Although after watching that game on Saturday, I’m pretty sure I could go for 3 bills against that Memphis team. That being said, the 2008 JC would have gone about 8/23 with 96 yards and 2 picks in that game.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
No it isn’t. CFB has never been more popular and ND has sucked for 10 years (at least). ND is not what they once were and they will never get back to their former (1980’s) level.
I’m thinking Hernia was making a sarcastic reference to Bob Griese saying that college football isn’t as good without the traditional powers in the top 10.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Wow… there is some serious Julio Jones hatred in here. Some legit, most delusional.

/just saying
November 10th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
You think so? I’m not sure I agree with that statement. Maybe being stuck up here in Philly clouds my judgment a bit, but CFB is not very popular in this city.
/can’t wait to get down to Columbia this weekend
November 10th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
#1 in total defense and yards yielded per play
Good luck against TCU in that bowl game.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Judging by the ridiculous dollar amounts being thrown around for TV rights, I’d say popularity’s at an all-time high. And I think you’re right, being in Philly doesn’t help much.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
philly, boston, new york…..could care less about college football. You are a little clouded though, CFB is the biggest its ever been
November 10th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
His avg game this year is 3 catches/47 yds. He has 2 TDs. Please fill us in on our delusions.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
I can’t really say if CFB is more popular now than ever, because it’s basically always #1 in my world.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
How so? He looks like a stud, but he has what, 2-3 td’s in his last 15 games. McElroy has been bad at times (very bad at others) but he is no worse than Joe Cox and Bama has a better o-line than does UGA. Jones is a massive underachiever at this point in his career. Hell, his TD was due to a god-awful whiff for a tackle more than anything else against LSU.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Cox at least throws the ball where Green can go up and get it. Granted, that means the other team can get it too, but still. I’ve seen McElroy overthrow receivers at least 5-6 times this year. Like, badly overthrow them.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
try telling that to my friends who went to temple. theres nothing worse in this world then having a college football conversation and having them try and interrupt with a temple owls football story. awful
November 10th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Heh…cut ‘em some slack, Temple is going bowling for the first time in 30 years!
November 10th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
I think GotG mentioned this earlier, but Jones has gotten a little too big, IMO. Not quite the same as we saw last year.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Penn State’s best win Temple
agreed. don’t know how you slot the Lions.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
It counts the same as not having lost since September of 2009. Who cares what happened last year?
I can see why you have USC so high, makes perfect sense. I think you are under-estimating just how bad Washington is. That loss for USC is fucking pathetic. Plus they just got ran out of Autzen two weeks ago and they struggled to beat a dog shit ASU team. How the hell are they a top 10 team? And I’m a pac-10 homer.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
LSU should be ahead of both USC and tOSU.
Penn State’s best win Temple
November 10th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
yeah, I guess you’re right. after Al Golden leaves them in a year or 2, all will be well again.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Too busy with murdering and racial hate crimes in Philly?
Only true and proper way to rank a D is ppg. The ypg rankings are great if you are ninnie or a bojack.
/see what I did there
November 10th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Sean Jean mentioned it and he’s right. He runs some shitty routes and his hands are not great…but his QB has screwed him over several times. Still think AJ shits on him though. I can’t wait for this weekend against Auburn. Any hate I have towards Fla, GT and Tenn should be multiplied by 10 and you get my hatred of Auburn….sons of bitches.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
I’m shocked you homers didn’t put Notre Dame or Michigan in the Top 25. Good for you.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
That SI Top 16 they push all over on their site pisses me off. Having a poll on your NEWS site creates a conflict. And it’s a dumb idea. Make it go away please.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
RE: Arizona pic
yes, maybe, yes
November 10th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I’m going to watch Temple play Saturday
November 10th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
….and i will need plenty of booze to watch those two shitty teams shit back and forth on each other all night
November 10th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Great quotes from today’s Forde Yard Dash regarding our beloved Iowa fans:
“The Wildcats spared this great nation from having to listen to more earnestly deluded Hawkeyes fans explain why their team deserved a shot at the national title, despite a string of underwhelming victories against suspect competition.
Listening to Iowa’s attempts to twist logic was like watching John Goodman try to fit into Prince’s jeans. Not pretty.
Now everyone knows the truth. Even Iowans, who are free to return to reality.”
November 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
/skipped comments
Ohio State ranked above USC with same number of losses though USC beat them in Columbus. Oregon ranked below USC with the same number of losses though Oregon beat them two weeks ago. Does. Not. Compute.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Julio has had an bad year, i’m not going to argue that. Sean Jean has most of the reason pegged correctly…
Cox at least throws the ball where Green can go up and get it. Granted, that means the other team can get it too, but still. I’ve seen McElroy overthrow receivers at least 5-6 times this year. Like, badly overthrow them.
Another reason for his mediocre numbers, besides his dropped passes, would be the high percentage of run plays (especially with Ingram taking snaps the majority of 4th qtrs).
November 10th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
I agree, but if the teams’ offense turns the ball over inside your 40 yardline often that skews the stats a lot. Take UGA for example. Their offense has turned the ball over 13 times inside their own 40. That is an amazing number.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
GOG, there is a reason the scoreboard keeps the score, not yards.
I’m a numbers guy too. But as far as D goes the only one that is a telltale is ppg.
Just always get a kick out people hanging their hat on that.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Wow. Nice. If the Jackets win the ACC, that’s the likely OB opponent, assuming OSU handles bidness this weekend.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Also, Julio will be wide the fuck open on multiple occasions where McElroy never sees him. I don’t think it’s his route running as much as it is his blind qb and dropped passes.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Just because no one’s done it yet, and it seems pretty funny:
Stonehill (a D-2 team) >Wagner>Monmouth>Bryant>Robert Morris>Albany>Maine>UMass>New Hampshire>Villanova>Temple>Navy>Notre Dame
November 10th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Iowa getting into a BCS game is laughable. Especially if it’s over Boise State.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
13 times? Wholly shit that is inept.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I see whoever writes this column learned to stop making OSU predictions
November 10th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I linked it in a previous thread, but that’s what Tony Barnhart seems to think will happen.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Iowa takes a ton of shit for losing a game that didn’t include their most important player. they aren’t as deep as the top top teams, and even most of those lose when their starting QB is out (see Oklahoma)
November 10th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
People in the know don’t view PPG as the end all and be all because special teams scores, pick 6s and fumbles returned for a TD are counted in that stat. These situations are not reflective of the defense.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
If Iowa is in the top-14 it would not shock me. The entire state will travel. It would be ridiculous and embarrassing and the TV draw would be awful, but they would sell it out for sure.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
N’Western beat them with its backup QB playing.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Didn’t Iowa’s “most important player” have three turnovers before he was hurt in that game?
November 10th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I somewhat misspoke, it won’t shock me either. It will still be pathetic.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Re: Banishment Bets
I like it. If I lose, I’ll be productive to end 2009 at work. If I win, well then… c’mon, I win.
The only reason I made the bet is because everyone was saying Pitt will be ND. I wanted to see how much weight people put behind their words.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
USC is 5 spots ahead of Oregon even though they played just two weeks ago and USC beat ASU 14-9 this week.
Yeah this guy is a great college football voice.
What a joke.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Also if there’s a 3 team tie in the Pac 10 it will go by record against next team in standings which means USC is probably going to go because Washington will be at the very bottom and USC will have wins against everyone in between while Oregon will have lost to Stanford who will be at worst 5th.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Don’t sleep on the fact that Oregon has beaten every common opponent by more points than USC has, and both of Oregon’s losses have came against quality competition while USC has a loss against a bottom feeder.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
bbryan- don’t try to rationalize you’ll just give yourself a stroke. Even the AP writers and coaches put USC ahead of Oregon, what a bunch of clowns.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
It’s all about the big name I guess. I had hope that this site would be above that, but alas I was wrong.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Love the Seton Hall props. I think picking them in the final 4 is ridiculous but they will make the tourney.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
and Iowa was also winning.
November 10th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
A couple thoughts…
Is winning now more important than winning early?
Does losing at home count as worse than losing on road?
Does losing to a good team count less than losing to a bad team?
Are the rankings based on past accomplishments, or who the best team right now is?
Those are questions that go unanswered in any poll. There really aren’t right answers, but instead opinions on the questions above based on who is answering them.
To be truthful, the poll, other than 1 and 2 means nothing, so it’s all for trash talk and chatter…
And it’s fun…
/where’s the playoff?
November 10th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Oregon State wins out. Oregon beats Arizona. USC beats Arizona. Stanford beats USC. Oregon State = Rose Bowl. What could go wrong?
November 10th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

I submit Erik Ainge from his own endzone vs. LSU in 2005. That backwards, over the head POS interception for a TD was the worst pass thrown in history!
/Shame on Sean Jean for not noting the pass earlier

Sorry, shitty day at the office.
1. I think USC is probably too high here.
2. I think Arizona should go to the Rose Bowl just because of what it would mean for the Stoops family Thanksgiving dynamics.
3. I think OSU is going to beat Iowa, 34-13.
4. I think Iowa is going to play in the Capital One Bowl again, or some shit, and maybe have an ending as good as the one five-six years ago. Right, or lose by 27.
5. I think Alabama is going to beat Florida.
6. I think Auburn and Alabama is going to be close.
7. I think Dave W. will put the final nail in Charlie’s coffin.

Don’t care to explain how Ohio State is ahead of USC or USC is ahead of Oregon?
