Federal Agents Can Now Claim Bonds, Vick and an NBA Referee*
Uncategorized July 20th. 2007, 2:52pm
You never know what you’re going to unearth in the seedy world of organized crime … but an NBA ref? That’s the big claim in the New York Post this morning. An unnamed ref betting on games … including games he officiated. Yikes. The first game we’ll have to ask about is Game 3 of the NBA Finals last year. Mark Cuban will forever have ammo against David Stern if the ref in question was calling that game. The details:
The investigation, which began more than a year ago, is zeroing in on blockbuster allegations that the referee was making calls that affected the point spread to guarantee that he - and the hoods who had their hooks in him - cashed in on large bets. Federal agents are set to arrest the referee and a cadre of mobsters and their associates who lined their pockets, sources said.
So who’s the ref? If you’re not up to speed on your NBA refs, edumacate yourself right here. We’re expecting a flood of Joey Crawford guesses, but we’ll be checking IP address to make sure they’re not all coming from San Antonio. Can this story even be true? When we see Bennett Salvatore and Leon Wood, the last thing we think is, ‘mobbed up.’
[*Update: Tremendous find by one of our commenters - NBA ref Bob Delaney used to be an undercover State trooper who infiltrated the mob and then turned into a ref. This is a fascinating connection ... no?]
[**Update II: The New York Times has the guy: Tim Donaghy. Crazy props to one of our commenters, KSK's Unsilent Majority, who guessed Donaghy earlier today in comments portion of this post.]

Bob Delaney used to be an undercover cop who infiltrated a New Jersey mob family before becoming an NBA ref.

So not only do they pander to superstars, either ignore or change rules (travelling, fouls in the last 2 minutes), and hold grudges, but they also fix games depending on the point spread?
No wonder I stopped watching this league 10 years ago. Earl Hebner has more integrity.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
That’s hardly a “find” considering ESPN and others have aired profiles and interviews with Delaney.
You should probably go rent Donnie Brasco again.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
This is why the NBA is a bunch of frauds!!!!!!!!!!!
July 20th, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Um, that’s because Earl Hebner rules.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Based on incompetent calls my guess would be Tim Donaghy. But he’s too much of a pussy to get involved in shit like this.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
Suddenly, Barry seems like Pippi Longstocking in the realm of the sports world. What’s next - Roger Goodell revealed to be a serial killer?
July 20th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
fascinating connection … no
fascinating coincidence … debatable
July 20th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
It would be more interesting if it turned out Delaney was pulling a Matt Damon in The Departed angle.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
I just hope it aint Violet Palmer !
July 20th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Steve Javie. That is all.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Someone explain the Over/Under numbers on that chart.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
$20 says if this turns out to be true they’ll turn it into a movie.
Oops, I’ve probably missed the point of the story if I’m trying to gamble over it.
July 20th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
No, Javie’s just evil. You’ve gotta look at guys who make nonsense calls in the 4th quarter like Ed Malloy!
July 20th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Ted
I think the “Over” is how many times the game went over the total, and the “Under” number is how many times the game went under the total. That’s my guess.
Also it would be awesome if it was Delaney, given his previous mob ties. Can’t wait for the movie about this in ten years. Who plays Delaney? Stern?

“When we see Bennett Salvatore and Leon Wood, the last thing we think is, ‘mobbed up.’”
The fact you even typed those words made me laugh; I don’t believe you TBL.
You should be running a contest on which ref has the gambling problem. It could be any one of them — that’s how bad NBA officiating is. However, the AP is reporting that he (so its not Violet Palmer) will be turning himself in next week.
One question, will this be the scandal that finally brings down King David?
July 20th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
lohur- If it brings anybody down it will start with Stu Jackson. He’s in charge of the officials.
July 20th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
My “bet” is Bennett Salvatore. Does Wikipedia know something we don’t?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennett_Salvatore
July 20th, 2007 at 4:55 pm
My guess is it was someone involved in the debacle that was the 2006 Finals.
July 20th, 2007 at 5:22 pm
Unsilent Majority-
So you’re saying that Jackson’s taking the charge? I think Stern might call a blocking foul actually.
But seriously, I believe your right on the Jackson front. Everyone knows that he holds grudges against certain players. I’m sure that some may be surprised that a corrupt head of officiating oversees corrupt officials. However, King David enables this type of behavior by allowing these refs — and their boss Jackson — to continue to hold their jobs even when they’re incompetent at best, and corrupt at worst.
July 20th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Me thinks that Joey “I hate San Antonio” Crawford, Dick “Mr. Pro-Laker” Bavetta or Stan “I’m too good to follow my dad into NFL officiating” Javie is the FBI’s target.
If it is the case, I fully expect the NBA to fall to 101st in the pecking order of sports, behind such magnificent events like cockroach racing, caber tossing and the proposed “Running of the cows”. Oh and ESPN will drop it and add more poker(at the very least it should add the NHL back).
July 20th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
I’m looking for Mark Cuban to make a power grab out of this situation, especially since has consitantly been the loudest officiating critic in the league.
July 20th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Steve Javie has a rep for being no-no sense, he’ll eject you for the stupidest things, my guess is that those ejections were an attempt to throw out players and hence effect the scores of games.
July 20th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
HAHAHAHA!
I WAS RIGHT! FUCK YOU DONAGHY!
July 20th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
I would suspect anyone who worked that crock of shit called the NBA Finals two years ago. With the Heat down 2-0, I bet there were some tempting lines. And then Wade got every fucking call I have ever seen. And people glossed over it. It was ridiculous. I have never seen reffing that bad. Except for maybe the Tuck Rule.
July 20th, 2007 at 6:53 pm
I guess he wasn’t that much of pussy after all, huh? Anybody know what notable games Donaghy worked?
July 20th, 2007 at 7:07 pm
So will Cuban get a refund?
July 20th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
i still say he’s a pussy
July 20th, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Heh. Ok but do you know what big games he worked?
July 20th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
good call UM. and yes, steve javie is plain evil, which is why suggested him. i just wanted him to get caught up in this charge because i hate him.
July 20th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
He’s only officiated 15 playoff games in 13 years (and rightfully so). I have no idea whether any of them was the least bit controversial. Typically point shaving similar crimes are perpetrated when the spotlight is at its most dim. It’s more likely that he pulled this shit in some Bobcats/Knicks crapfest.
July 20th, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Tim Donaghy. He was outed by the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/21/sports/basketball/21referee.html?ref=sports
July 20th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Donaghy reffed game 3 of the Suns-Spurs series, which most call the worst officiated game in NBA history.

July 20th, 2007 at 10:58 pm
Wow, the hits keep coming for Stern. That is the worst possible series this guy could have worked on. First, the bad taste from the bogus suspensions and then a crooked ref working one of the games!? Yikes.
July 20th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
He also officiated the aforementioned Mavs- Warriors series. I have always felt the NBA has had by FAR the worst officiating out of any of the professional leagues. People dog on the NFL refs a lot, but most of the time it’s due to bad rules, not really their fault. I’m talking about trying to decide pass interference penalties and enforcing tuck rules. They also give good explanations of why they made that call sometimes, something I’ve noticed Ed Hochuli does a lot. NBA officials just seem really shady to me and Salvatore’s and now Donaghy’s transgressions lend that some credence.

Isn’t this the guy who Rasheed acousted after a game, earning himself a 7 games suspension and 1.6 million in fines and lost pay? Maybe Ra had a point…
July 22nd, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Definitely sad news when the front page of ESPN is dominated by legalese. You’d think it was the police beat.
