i don’t think that he’s really running his mouth…a) he’s arguably the best TE in football right now when it comes to catching and blocking (he’s a DEVASTATING blocker) and b) both the bears’ lines are made of suck.
he’s just truthing it.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Am I terrible for rooting for the lion? Deer are overpopulated, and dumb ones should be culled from the herd anyways…natural selection is the way to go.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:13 am
The woman in the crowd screaming “jump in the water!” was funny. The whole thing had a Roman coliseum feel.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:14 am
We’ve said this over and over. I was listen to the WSJ and they were talking about how a guy who was making six figures was reduced to half that, and his wife had to get a job. That story I had no sympathy for. However, one story was a guy was with a company for 16 years and was only given three weeks severance pay.
Did the deer finally get eaten or did it drown? Those animals are as dumb as fuck.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Tall guy, i’m right with you. That stupid deer ran into the zoo, and to avoid people, jumped into the Lion’s den. I mainly feel bad that the lioness was clueless about what to do with a living thing.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Did the deer finally get eaten or did it drown?
It got rescued, and later euthanized because it was so horribly injured.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Happy Veterans Day to all the brave men and women who have made the commitment to protect and serve this country.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:17 am
Seconded. Does this mean mrejr’s lack of reading skills have to be ignored for one day?
Thanks, Dirt.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Good point Dirt. But she looked so bad ass, didn’t she?
November 11th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Thank you to all of the veterans and all of those currently serving at home and abroad.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Indeed! I’m surrounded here with Norfolk Navy Base and Langley Air Force Base and feel it’s a privelege and an honor to be around those folks everyday.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Agreed. A big thank you to the men, women, and families of the armed services. You guys should get recognized more than one day per year.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Happy Veterans Day to all the brave men and women who have made the commitment to protect and serve this country
except Kellen Winslow.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:24 am
spencer – having a great season. can’t vault him into the ‘best TE in football discussion IMO due to previous transgressions. letdowns. issues.
im a proud fantasy owner, but best tight end?
Dallas Clark would like a word.
Tony Gonalez.
Antonio Gates.
Heath Miller.
Celek.
Witten.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Vernon Davis = mouthy
Is Jim Boeheim a Top 10 coach of all time? Certainly
top 5 imo
November 11th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Cotto by TKO in the…sixth, I’ll say. Haven’t been this excited for a fight in a while. Two great fighters heading a big fight, haven’t had that in a while. De La Hoya-Mayweather and Mayweather-Hatton certainly didn’t qualify.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:26 am
But he’s a soldier, dog!
November 11th, 2009 at 8:26 am
@dirt they have deer unpenned at the Washington zoo. Don’t ask me why, they’re slightly above rats in my opinion.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Ted Ginn though they solved this problem.
Bill Parcells would also like to kick this writer’s ass and replace him with the homeless guy he helped out the other day. They need a defensive secondary more than they need a WR. A team that successfully runs the Wildcat hardly has a need for a top flight receiver.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:27 am
The TCU-Utah game should be very interesting. Oregon is the only loss for Utah this year, but I think the game was kind of close. I wonder if TCU rolls (which could happen) will ESPN talk about how good they are, or will they just ignore them like they have all year? I’m pretty sure they will ignore them.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:27 am
He said best “all around” TE. Dallas Clark is the best receiving TE in football by a large margin, but Davis is an awesome blocker and has been a great receiver this season. Right now, at this point in time, Davis is the best all-around TE in football. Now, let’s see him do it for longer than eight games.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Dallas Clark is the best receiving tight end in football but he lines up in the slot more often than not. Witten might be better all around than Davis but outside of that, the other guys are more receivers than well-rounded TEs.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Better than Witten, Bsanders? I hate Dallas, but that dude is awesome. Doesn’t he do a lot of blocking as well?
November 11th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Over the past few years, certainly Witten’s the better all-around player. Over the first half of this season, Davis has been better. Like I said, let’s see him do it longer than eight games, though.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:31 am
I am definitely watching TCU/Utah. I had intended to watch TCU/BYU, but by the time I remembered it was on, it was already a massacre. So I haven’t seen TCU enough to have an informed opinion.
It is #4 versus #11 though, so people should watch it.
Also, Dallas Clark isn’t a tight end. Cap Rooney confirmed that yesterday, Sanders.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:31 am
I live 6-7 blocks from that zoo, I’m breaking that lion out today and teaching it to hunt again. Fuck that noise.
TBL, those are all good TEs (except celek), but Davis has the chance to be a better combo TE than any of them. He’s got great hands, excellent blocker and extremely athletic for that position.
Thanks to all the Vets and current military personnel today.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Bsanders, when is The Hurt Locker coming out on DVD? I heard that was one hell of a movie, but it was never playing anywhere around me.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Matzah and Meatball discussing the Bears… Matzah has gone all “Brett Favre” on Jay Cutler…
Meatball: “Well, the Bears are a disappointment this season too. Jay Cutler has been rather mediocre this year. He’s thrown 12 picks.”
Matzah: “That’s just what Jay Cutler does. That’s his game.”
Well fuck me running. If that makes a good quarterback, Jake Delhomme is leading the world in Pro Bowl votes.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:35 am
Better than Witten, Bsanders? I hate Dallas, but that dude is awesome. Doesn’t he do a lot of blocking as well?
He’s been the focus of opposing defenses this year, so his receptions are down. But he’s the man, and has been the man for a few years.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:36 am
Exactly how I feel. I think Cotto is more motivated than any prime time boxer right now. Pacquiao really hasn’t fought someone this good since Marquez, and I think Cotto is much better.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:36 am
January, I think. It’s awesome.
Did he? He must write for Football Outsiders or something. Back in the days when the Colts had a running game and could run the 2-TE formation with he and stone hands Utecht he was definitely a TE. He still is sometimes. But hey, if the Texans are going to try and cover him with Brian Cushing you’d be foolish to take him out of the slot. It also doesn’t help matters that Pierre Garcon has sucked large penis for a month now.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Just a note on Tony Gonzalez. He’s the best, most complete tight end ever, and he’s still really good. He’s not the best now, though.
Antonio Gates is a fat, slow wide receiver.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Yeah, but… no matter how above-average Tony Romo is, Vernon Davis has to get credit for having a ridiculous year when the combo of Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are throwing you the ball.
I use the term throw very loosely there. More like a shotput attempt.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:39 am
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again. That show is the biggest fuck you to people who listen to sports radio. They have amazing guests and get great production and all the resources in the world, but have 2 of the dumbest people on earth talking about sports.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Agreed. In the pre-ESPN days John Mackey was a beast, though. Shame how things have turned out for him.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:40 am
Nebraska hosting Boise State in 2011 to open the year? It might just happen.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:42 am
more on this guy, later.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:45 am
derek brown!
November 11th, 2009 at 8:45 am
im sure it was tough adjusting to life going from six figure income to only 3
November 11th, 2009 at 8:46 am
I’d like to see Boise play Oklahoma in Norman and have Stoops drop 100 on them. It wouldn’t qualify as a “big game” so Bobby should be able to handle that.
Playing Nebraska would just be another B-List opponent from a BCS conference to pad that schedule for a BCS run for Boise. May as well schedule ND. It should be mandatory they face USC, Florida, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Texas or Virginia Tech every non-conference so I no longer have to hear about the smurf turf.
/so sick of non-BCS teams
November 11th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Boeheim is horrible coach. He is a great recruiter and that’s about it. He consistently (and always had) has amazing talent that somehow finds a way to under perform. Think of it this way… if he didn’t have the freak of nature that Melo was to win him his championship, would we even be having this conversation?
Guys that are better:
Pete Newell
Eddie Sutton
Lute Olson
Jimmy V
Hank Iba
Pitino
Pete Carril
Others in the discussion:
Tarkanian
Denny Crum
Don Haskins
Roy Williams… not yet

Nebraska won’t be B-list in 2 years. Maybe Iowa, but not Nebraska.
/Zing!!
November 11th, 2009 at 8:50 am
Boeheim is horrible coach.
You kinda lose everyone right there and turn into white noise. And great recruiting is half the game of college coaching. Gettting guys to trip to Syracuse and selling the environment isn’t exactly the easiest thing to do.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:50 am
so sick of non-BCS teams
First, Oregon is B list? Second, what a lame argument from a big 10 guy. That conference is rife with shitty teams, and your stupid team played Arkansas state and two other shitty teams, and barely beat them.
Do I think teams should schedule Boise to shut them up? Yes. Well, Oregon did, and didn’t shut them up. So now they can go to a BCS bowl, where somebody can shut them up.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:52 am
Cowherd?
November 11th, 2009 at 8:52 am
I stopped reading at this point. figured the rest was incorrect as well.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:52 am
A lot of those postings will never be filled. They pay to have them up there and they just don’t take them down. Trust me. When I was looking for a job and I sent out letters and resumes to over 300 people I found this out very quickly. Due to budget cuts they won’t get filled.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:52 am
For example? You may think he is a douche, but a “horrible coach”? Wow…
November 11th, 2009 at 8:53 am
The deer later died
did it drown?
November 11th, 2009 at 8:53 am
UK gets Poole to sign. I dont think anyone else is signing with them today.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Did you see them play Stanford this weekend?
Also, have you seen Boise’s schedule RIFE WITH SHITTY TEAMS? UC Davis… there’s a good team. Oregon was the only top 25 team the play all year. There were FIVE TEAMS ranked 100 or lower.
Give me a fucking break. Join a power conference or get the fuck out.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:54 am
another lion got to it.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:54 am
They’d better hope TCU loses. If not Boise will be Poinsettia Bowl-bound…again. They should get a second at-large bid, but if Iowa wins against Minnessota and they are in the top-14 a bowl would look long and hard at them because they travel so well. That would be a crime, but it could happen.

Horrible is a bit over the top. He is an all-time good coach… not all-time great.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:56 am
Though footage of the deer’s heroic struggle shows her looking relatively unharmed, the Washington Post reports that “the deer had a serious wound on its belly” and was eventually euthanized.
another lion didn’t get it.

Stanford > Northwestern
November 11th, 2009 at 8:57 am
C’mon. No matter how down the Big Ten is, the Big XII North will always be worse for wear. There’s a chance that Iowa State could win the annual trip to get destroyed by Texas/OU this year.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:58 am
@Panther- Hank Iba over Boeheim? how do you figure that? not by winning %. and no mention of Dean Smith but you mention Roy Williams? i bet your fave conference is the Big 12
November 11th, 2009 at 8:58 am
panther, i dont care how much you hate the man, but coach k has to be on that list
November 11th, 2009 at 8:59 am
LOL
Dolphin fans don’t get much play in the “most annoying fans” discussion, but holy mother of fuck are they pathetic.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Actually, Northwestern is a better med school according to U.S. News and World Reports.
Oh wait, are we talking about football?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:00 am
Clown, let’s not forget that N’Western had to use its backup QB as well. That was a really bad loss for Iowa. Stanzi or no Stanzi. What’s funny is that they could lose the next two. If that backup was so bad against NW, who’s to say he won’t be that bad against MIN?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:00 am
TBL…re: vernon davis.
he’s not the pass catcher those guys are, but watch the man block. he’s like an extra tackle that runs a 4.4. when he locks into a DE, it’s over. even against guys like freeney and mathis.
clark couldn’t block an 8th grader. great player, shitty blocker.
and VD is WAYYYY better than brent celek. how could you even put celek on that list?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:00 am
im late but surprised owen daniels wasnt added to the list of tight ends.
i pray he can come back after this knee injury. He was looking to get paid this past off season and it was a lock that he was after this season up until his knee injury. I feel sorry for the guy.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Curious, what is your criteria for your great coaches? Wooden, Knight, Coach K?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:01 am
but coach k has to be on that list

I loved Jason Taylor’s quote this week when he said that Giants fans are a different class of people and that Jets fans take the “CL” out of class.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:02 am
I was laid off in 2003 and recieved almost 6 months severance, after retention bonuses and the like. I started doing freelance work almost immediatley, but if you saw the way my wife and i behaved, you would have thought i didn’t receive a dime in severance. People really need to be smarter, especially in today’s economy.

This pretty much works for anybody on the Colts who ever starts a play with their hand on the ground.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:03 am
@Irish and WBW… I think all of the other top 10 are pretty legit. I was just expanding other coaches not mentioned that are better than Boeheim.
I’m actually a Big East guy. Pittsburgh for full disclosure.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Yes, the back-up that played two weeks straight for Kafka. As opposed to the guy who had thrown three total passes and took 5% of 1st team snaps in practice all year for Iowa.
Very objective and fair comparison Gods. Was Northwestern also missing their top two running backs, All-American left guard and starting corner? I think I missed that depth chart update in the pregame.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:04 am
You watch CW11 news… is someone there related to you or something?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:04 am
i hate duke as much as anybody else, but the his success is pretty outstanding. nobody has ever got his players to play man-to-man defense better than coach k.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:05 am
the damn CW11 New lied to me! sorry, irish
i said nevermind because i noticed that was part 2 and obviously there were other videos. duh on my part
November 11th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Midwesterners>West Coasters though. Tough call.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Even though the fish swept the Jets this year, nothing is better than going to the annual Jets/Fish game at the Meadowlands. Seeing all of the loser Fish fans in their Marino jerseys and always with their GF because they have no freinds who would go to the game with them. It’s always fun picking on them and reminding them that Marino is not going to walk out on to the field.

November 11th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Wrong. Iowa State was eliminated last week. The North is a joke, but Nebraska is building pretty well. It will take another couple of years, but they will certainly surpass Iowa.

@Celtic: I’m going. This is the defacto homecoming for my friends so tons of people coming into town. They don’t open the tailgating lots til 3pm though so we got a keg for at my place for the AM fun then another for the afternoon.
I’ll say though… Pitt likes losing these types of games. I think we SHOULD win, but ND’s strength (pass game) is our biggest weakness (pass defense). Could be interesting, but regardless, it will be fun.

November 11th, 2009 at 9:25 am
They’ll still beat Iowa twice. Average margin of victory around 27.5.
/fuck
November 11th, 2009 at 9:25 am
you just don’t have a refined palate, sinner.
if i wanted flavor or fresh breath, i’d chew a fucking piece of gum.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:26 am
salty > sweet
November 11th, 2009 at 9:29 am
can’t we just agree that pouches are the devil and move on? so i like a little freshness. you like it organic. the real enemy here is the pouch. oh, and cherry and vanilla flavored skoal. leave wintergreen out of this.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:29 am
After Ohio State won a title they might have been sweet. Now they are probably more like boiled peanuts. What say you, spencer?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Bobby Knight > Boeheim. The greatest coaches IMO are inovators who changed the game. See Newell’s offense or Knight’s motion offense. I don’t think Jim B’s flex zone D – (while highly effective) is in that league. Hoops started before 1980. I don’t think in a best of 7, Jim B could last against Al McGuire for instance. Boeheim is likely around 20-25 IMO.
The Hurt Locker might have a delayed DVD release as it could go back in theaters with a Best Picture Nod – which I think it will most certainly get with 10 films getting in again.
Thanks to all our vets! Happy belated Marine Corps b-day as well!
Bsanders, when is The Hurt Locker coming out on DVD? I heard that was one hell of a movie, but it was never playing anywhere around me.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:30 am
I don’t normally go to deadspin, but I went there just now looking for that story TBL doesn’t anything to do with, and I saw the 8 cameltoe rowing team photo.
Oh that’s funny.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:32 am
after purdue, that was accurate, now they’re just out of the oven after being roasted in honey and sugar. and my, are they DELICIOUS!!!
/fuck penn state…or should i say OSU jr.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Penn St. football and Joe Pa seem to get off lightly for taking the Bill Snyder Kansas State approach to non-conference scheduling.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:38 am
linebacker who?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Not here in PA. Blasted weekly if not daily for it. No surprise they got waxed by the two legit teams they played. That’s what happens with 4 tune-up games.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
But they are going to be 10-2!!! They will finish in the top-15!!1 They must be good.
/Delaney’d
November 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Cherry skoal doesn’t even taste like cherry… I have no idea what it tastes like besides straight awfulness.
And I’ll agree that pouches are the enemy. It allows the dumb and weak to temporarily think they serve a purpose in society, kinda like these 64 calorie beers: sure, you have a “beer” in your hand, but are you ever really going to feel intoxicated? Maybe if you’re 50lbs soaking wet.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Forgot that OSU had the greatest lb to play the game. Katzenmoyer.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:41 am
That deer didn’t escape. Those Lions were clearly having some fun with it. Could you hear all these little kids in the background? What kind of parents were about their toddlers witness some carnage? Man.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:42 am
penn state had the best LB ever to play? i coulda swore that LT went to north carolina. and ray lewis went to the U. and mike singeltary went to baylor.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:43 am
this.
and skoal cherry is gawd awful, but id say vanill, berry and peach are all worse. just vomit inducing.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:43 am
not bitter at all, I actually like Tubby.
I just love the fact that one of the top 3 incoming players in the big ten won’t be seeing the court for a while.
Seriously though, will a minnesota booster just give White some money so he stops trying to steal things.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Boeheim owes his life to Carmelo Anthony.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Snyder and KSU played 2 FCS schools. That should be illegal. They are 4-4 against FBS competition. They could easily lose to Missouri and Nebraska in the next two weeks and finish 6-6 but not be bowl eligible because of said schedule.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:44 am
You definition of good changes as often as the Browns change personnel.

Jeff Schultz punches a hole in Paul Johnson to Notre Dame.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Stephen A. Smith has a new gig. He writes the headlines for the SI Truth and Rumors apparently, b/c nobody else could have written this: “Iverson a Perfect Fit for the Cavs”
November 11th, 2009 at 9:48 am
PSU has had great LB’s ( Jack Ham, Shane Conlan, Andre Collins, LaVar Arrington (Short had a better overall pro career)). Not saying that they were the greatest to ever play.
I don’t think that you can deny that, can you?
Spielman and Vrabel were great from OSU.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:49 am
I still think Johnson to ND was completely unfounded in the first place. Get me Gruden goddamnit!!!

Dick Butkis just dropped his breakfast fork and wants a word with you Unibrow.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:51 am
How so? Penn State is not good. Winning 10 games does not a good team make if you don’t beat anyone. I know this is a crazy idea, but a 9-3 team can be better than an 10-2 team. Just becuase you have more losses does not mean you’re worse. Of course voters in the polls have no idea what I am talking about.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:51 am
“Iverson a Perfect Fit for the Cavs”
Wilbon keeps saying that, too. It is very stupid.

Voters would just stare at you.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:54 am
PSU has had some great ones in the past, but OSU has been the place for college LB’s for the past two decades.
aj hawk was the best college LB i can remember seen in the 2000’s other than patrick willis. he was dominant. he was a better buckeye than spielman, katzenmoyer, and laurinaitis (who was overrated).
and vrabel played DE at OSU.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:54 am
He should stay where he is. Johnson walked in to a perfect situation in that he had a QB who could run his system from the beginning. If he has Dayne Crist running the show he would lose 8 games (see Rich Rod in year one). Tech is recruiting well and he has Nesbit for one more year. There are better jobs for him and he will most likely take one down the line, but ND is not one of them.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:54 am
As far as I’ve seen, there aren’t any “good” teams in college football by your standards. Every team has a discernible flaw this season. That doesn’t mean they aren’t “good”.
But, Boise still sucks for all intensive purposes. So does TCU, Utah and BYU.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Not happening. why take a step back from being a Super Bowl winning coach to going to a the most scrutinized job in college football?
November 11th, 2009 at 9:56 am
im sure dick butkis is pissed, but DICK BUTKUS wouldn’t give a flying fuck.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:56 am
The 100 Miami LB’s in the NFL disagree.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:57 am
Chad Greenway. Call me a homer, but he’s in the conversation. Outside of that, you also forgot Derrick Johnson and E.J. Henderson.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:57 am
FLA, Texas, Bama, TCU, Cincy, Boise, Oregon, Ohio State, LSU, USC, Miami, and GT are good teams. I’m sure I’m leaving some out. Iowa, though, is not good. They are average. As is Penn State and every team in the Big 12 not named Texas.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:58 am
But, Boise still sucks for all intensive purposes. So does TCU, Utah and BYU
Intensive purposes is not something. Intents and purposes are things.
You should watch the TCU game this weekend.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:58 am
@bulldog- you probably know this by now, but this site is Big 11 heavy. nothing else matters to them except the big 11
November 11th, 2009 at 9:58 am
college LB’s, my man. COLLEGE.
aside from ray murda and vilma and dan morgan and jon beason…
you have a point.
BUT HOW DARE YOU RUIN MY PSU BASHING?!?!?!?

November 11th, 2009 at 9:59 am
i didn’t forget any of those guys.
aj hawk was un-fucking-believable.
he’s a mediocre packer tho. big disappointment.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Gimme an effin break. No, no, no, no, no way. Crum, Newell, Iba, Tark, & Frank McGuire are all definitely better. I would also take Lute over Boeheim, and would also consider Pitino and Clair Bee.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Both wear pinstripes and Damon’s throws usually travel the distance from SS to 1B. End of comparison.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Much better lifestyle though. I’d rather be a college coach at the top of my game (Pete Carroll) than an NFL coach at the top. I know the money is much better, but I think I could handle making 4 million as opposed to 8 if it meant not working 100 hour weeks and sleeping in my office.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:01 am
we were arguing PSU LB’s vs. OSU LB’s…why the fuck would we talk about the u?
im guessing dick butkus and i would travel the country giving pep talks to small businesses. but that’s just my best guess.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:01 am
I know. I’m just being selfish. But hear me out. He is from South Bend. His dad coached with Devine there. He would fit in perfectly there. The team is set up for how he runs an offense. I know its a silly pipe dream… but the least ND could do is offer him a ton of money. If he says no, no hard feelings, but they should at the very least make a play for him.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:02 am
that’s not true. there are just as many SEC fans. just because spencer beats his chest louder than anyone, and everyone gets sucked in and lets him hijack a post, doesn’t make it a big 10 site.
/backhanded compliment to you spencer.

What the hell are “intensive purposes”? Intents and purposes, SC, intents and purposes.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Nope. I hear they have a good punt returner named after one of the the Three Stooges though. Unless someone gets punched out at the end of the game, I have no interest whatsoever.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Yes. The problem is that Gruden LOVES working 100 hours a week and sleeping in his office. Goddamnit, the more I talk about it, the more I want Gruden as a coach. Fuck.

Perception is everything. You can’t just offer a job to someone and have them turn you down and move on. The media would grab ahold of that and you would hear 50 “Is ND a good job anymore” stories for 2 weeks which would, in turn, make it so.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:09 am
I don’t understand why a college football fan would not want to watch two good teams play. TCU is really good, and Utah is a 7-point loss from Oregon (on the road) away from being undefeated. This is the biggest game of the week.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Not true! I even looked! His name is Jeremy Kerley! KERLEY! I was right!
I don’t know anything else about the MWC or WAC though. Nor do I want to. Join the Pac-10 or Big XII, then I’ll care.

November 11th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Hate to say it. Me too. I really want Lou back. Monk Malloy too. Relax the requirements. I no longer care.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:14 am
If you think Texas will ever let TCU join the Big 12 you are insane. I’d love for this to happen, but it won’t. Boise and Utah should join the Pac 10. That would be sweet. Of course it will never happen because USC and Oregon would not want it to happen.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:16 am
In reality, Boise should join the Mountain West (or those two conferences should merge somehow), and they should be recognized as a “power” conference. They’d have just as many perennial powers as the Big 11, and their shitty teams would be just as shitty.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Well said. The MWC is very close in quality to the bottom feeders of the BCS (looking at you Big East). I’m looking forward to this matchup.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:17 am
TCU was. And I also said I was sure to forget some names.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:21 am
makes sense.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:21 am
They were going to but some political shit didn’t allow it. Ann Richards wanted Baylor in, and she had the biggest dick in Texas at the time so she got what she wanted.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Trading Baylor for TCU would be sweet…of course that would just mean the B12 South’s dominance over the the North would get even stronger. They need to re-allign and do so in a hurry. This is why Osborne was against the merger. He saw this coming.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:27 am
I would never want them to relax the requirements. There are a lot of good, smart, athletic kids out there who associate with the identity of the school. The administration needs to figure out (and it really isn’t that hard) who to get that can harness these kids ability. Oh, and how to attack the middle of the damn field. Oh, and Lou can come back any time he wants.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Whoa, let’s not start throwing personal attacks out there now. This is about the most insulting thing anyone has ever said to me here.
I demand you recant this statement.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Not sure Boeheim makes it into the top 10.
Wooden, Smith, Coach K, Roy Williams, Crum, Rupp, Knight, and Iba
are ahead of him in my opinion. Last two spots come out of a group that probably would include Boeheim, Pete Carril, Pitino, Guy Lewis, Lute Olson, Tom Izzo, and maybe even Tark the Shark.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:31 am
But who’s to say that if TCU had gotten in, then they wouldn’t have just gone the reverse paths? In the last 35 years of the SWC, Baylor went to 14 bowl games, TCU went to 2. So it’s not like TCU was in even any remote shape to argue they had a better program than Baylor at the time.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Further to my point above, if TCU had gotten in the Big 12, I suspect that they would be basically be Baylor…so in the end, it was a blessing in disguise for them.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Jon Gruden loves his name being tossed about for the ND job more than he would like to be the ND coach. It keeps his name in the air and creates this pseudo-competition for his next NFL employer. Gruden understands the business side of football negotiations very well and will never take his name out of the running. That said, I am sure he’d be better than Weiss, but I doubt he would actually want that job.
Has a coach ever gone from Super Bowl champ to college champ? Jimmy J did it the other way.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Calhoun?
November 11th, 2009 at 10:46 am
Calhoun hasn’t changed the game. No f*ing way. Anybody that wants to give Jim B the recruiting tag, the Shark was 10x the recruiter and a better coach. Jim B is so outside the top 10 it’s preposterous. Al McGuire keeps getting forgotten too.
You could put somebody like John Thompson in there too, he had to put up with a ton of shit for being a black head coach when that wasn’t popular. I think Pitino is slightly ahead of Thompson, McGuire and Tark though.
November 11th, 2009 at 10:48 am
and college hoops fans should read up on John McClendon – Dean Smith stole (admittedly) lots of his work. Great pioneer for black coaches:
November 11th, 2009 at 10:53 am
If you trade Boise for BYU, then it would be really sweet.
/Because conferences are more than football
//Because BYU has better tradition in football than 10 year old Smurf Turf U…

so to be a great coach you have to change or innovate? uconn was not recognized for anything in athletics prior to his arrival.
To be considered one of the top 10 coaches in the most played NCAA sport, I don’t think being thought of an innovator within the game is that much to ask to bolster your credibiltity
November 11th, 2009 at 11:28 am
woody hayes didn’t innovate crap, is he not a top-10 all-time college football coach? would you put june jones on there instead since he innovated the run’n’shoot?

Ah yes, after the imminent falls yet again of Vince Young and Terrelle Pryor, now the Hansbrough love has to begin by TBL Godfather.
Agreed but let’s not Mrejr the matter through March as he does soccer/football. Too bad TBL Godfather does not really like college football, which is still barely relevant, near as much as college basketball. Maybe he bets more on college basketball.
