Honoring Michael Jordan
NBA, Video November 13th. 2009, 12:00pmLeBron James is going to wear No. 6 – his Olympic number – next season instead of 23 to honor Michael Jordan. He’s urging other players in the league to do the same. While we’re on the topic of Jordan, how about some of the greatest dunks of the season? After what Dwyane Wade did last night, he’s the clear leader for NBA dunk of the season. A few other contenders after the jump. [Edit. Totally for Iggy. Added.]

Had Mike Breen called that dunk, it would have had the impact of a Manute Bowl toss in dunk.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I like what happened with 42 in baseball. This seems pointless in basketball, though, unless you do 32 and 33 also, and 6, and probably 13.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
CC, in your scenario, does Varejao not wind up crumbled under the hoop?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
So was LeBron unaware of MJ’s accomplishments before he took 23? Seems kind of ridiculous that he’s leading the charge against wearing it, when, umm, he’s wearing it.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
I agree, Jeff Boschee’s number should be retired
November 13th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Cursed this is America. People can change their minds.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Just shocked he wasn’t trying to take the charge. That’s un-Varejao like
November 13th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
MJ really did amazing things, you know, breaking the color barrier in basketball, inventing the jump shot, creating the 3 point line and designed the air jordan all by himself one night while he was serving soup to the homeless.
lebron’s an attention whore.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
seconded.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
I have no problem with that, but everything he said last night, was known 7 years ago. Also, #6 was Bill Russell’s number, the greatest winner in basketball history. Not to mention Dr. J wore #6 for the 76ers.. so are we going to go through this again in a few years?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
LeBron James is going to wear No. 6 – his Olympic number – next season instead of 23 so that everyone who has bought his jersey has to buy it again. Kobe said it would be a good idea
/what he actually meant to say.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
new team, new number, fuck
November 13th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
lucky enough for him, he gets tons. its funny that hes changing his number to a guys that would also be one to be retired if you started retiring numbers league wide.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
that’s awesome
November 13th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I hadn’t even considered that aspect MS. Now I feel foolish. I forgot Kobe has the best selling Jersey in the world, because everybody that had an 8 also got a 24.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
i have added the Iggy dunk. that was awesome. maybe #2
i love dunks
November 13th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
this really means he’s going to play in Chicago.
/needless and irresponsible speculation
November 13th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Maybe this is LeBrons way of saying he’s going to sign with the Bulls.
/why not?
//I cant care anymore
November 13th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Damn you, Wilhelm!
November 13th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
great minds, GSG, great minds…
November 13th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
So is Kobe the best post player in the NBA? Talk amongst yourselves.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
MLB should retire #21 for Roberto Clemente before the NBA retires #23 for Jordan
November 13th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
NBA should never retire 23.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
every player should change his number every 3 years, and they should sell jerseys with a full set of digits so you can stick them on Fathead-style.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
/joking
November 13th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Wow, there was a nationally televised Cavs/Lakers doubleheader last night? What are the odds of that?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
kobe should switch his number to 23 next year
November 13th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
LSU is probably the only team in college basketball that doesn’t have a player wearing #23 right now.
/Pete Maravich
//Did UNC retire the number?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
America should Legalize Marijuana
November 13th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Best way to honor Jordan would be to change the logo to his silhouette
November 13th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
tampa, are you blunted at work right now?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
who doesn’t?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Nike would have a problem with that…..
November 13th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Um, the guys who wore 42 for Jackie Robinson were allowed to wear it until they retired. I am not sure if all those guys are now out of baseball or what.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Yeah, let’s change the NBA logo to a Nike Logo. Why not?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I think Jose Lima was the last 42
November 13th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
This is what happens when LBJ tries not to talk about free agency in 2010. He has no insight on any other topic and comes off like a douchey used car salesman.
And I like LBJ. But he’s so attention needy.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
42 is done with in baseball now, across the board, except on that day that everybody gets to wear it. That is a truly awesome thing. That’s a celebration of a guy. (poor larry doby, though).
November 13th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
MLB.com says Mariona Rivera is the last guy with 42.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Why we’re at making crazy number retirements/honors let’s hang a banner with “10,000″ on it in every Hotel lobby in NBA cities to honor Wilt’s accomplishments of cramming 10,000 NBA groupies during his playing days.
IMO, that is a way more impressive accomplishment than what MJ did on the court. To have the ability to knock down 31 triple doubles during a season and a NBA hoe double team at night is something we should all salute.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Julius Erving would like LeBron to fuck off with this No. 6 stuff.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
mariano wears 42
November 13th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Christ, how did forget him?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Probably, it’s friday and he’s been crackin my shit up.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Bill Russell anyone?! What a sign of disrespect. He takes Jordan’s number, then two of the other top 10 players in NBA history!!
/trying to spark outrage.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
actually wouldn’t the best way to honor MJ be to play the game the way he did, like not act like a whiny bitch when you lose a game?
/don’t really think MJ needs honoring since a.) he’s alive b.) no one ever denied his cultural importance to the game
November 13th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
that’s fine…when he’s done complaining, he can go pick up lebron’s dry cleaning.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I don’t understand why Jordan needs to be honoured by anybody at all. He seems to do a pretty good job fellating himself.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
UNC retired it, and Duke has it retired for Shelden Williams now.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
LeBron should just wear “0″ to honor the number of rings he will retire with
November 13th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
I’m guessing LeBron has more respect than that for the first foul-line dunker in NBA history.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
The number theory doesn’t make a lot of sense as far as money/Lebron, since you’re already gonna have to buy a new jersey for his new team. Smarter to do that down the road. Love Clemente (David Maraniss has a relatively recent biography on him that is excellent) but don’t think MLB should retire his number the way they did with Robinson.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Now I really hate him…
/Doc Holliday’d
November 13th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
that’s just retarded.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
That’s a good call. His inept marketing team just collectively shat their pants.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
question to cleveland fans- Are you guys going to still like him if he leaves?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Or maybe this is his way of tipping his hand that he’s staying in Cleveland. Isn’t it spencer who’s always saying that LeBron does everything for a reason?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Roberto Clemente is my favorite baseball player ever. Talk about someone who should own the nickname “king”. One of the most inspirational players ever, and one of the very few athletes who earned the “hero” label. I read a biography of him in 4th grade and he’s still the guy for me. And i’m a Dodger fan. A league wide retiring of 21 is a bit much, but who would complain? Not me. BTW, I HATE that Riviera wears 42. A slap in the face, in my opinion. That’s our number. That’s the main reason I hate the Yankees.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
tallguy, you stoked for barnes? I will try to be near a cpu for the announcement. post is read. this is HUGE for duke
November 13th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
LeBron should just wear “0″ to honor the number of rings he will retire with
that’s just retarded.
I didn’t know it was a mortal lock that he gets a ring. Have him call Marino and let him know who to call to get one
November 13th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
HUGE for Duke? Very few one and dones are HUGE.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
No. Hate sounds like a good word.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
How many frequent flyer miles did Iggy get for that travel?
November 13th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Depends on the school and the situation. Marbury was HUGE for Tech.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
So is Kobe the best post player in the NBA? Talk amongst yourselves
Cursed is too funny
November 13th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Ohio State and Syracuse have the top recruiting classes in the country, maybe a post about them would make more sense.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
+1
November 13th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
OK, for the Dukes of the world then. Put it this way, I’m more excited for Thomas Robinson and Elijah Johnson than I am for Xavier Henry cause they’re staying multiple years
November 13th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
And that Wade slam was one of the best I’ve ever seen. It ranks up there with VC’s slam over Zo.
And yes, Kobe’s game is beautiful to watch this year.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I’m on pins and needles right now…thankfully I’m busy during the announcement, or I’d be going crazy.
It is huge for Duke, due to the recruiting success the Appalachian mouthbreather has had recently. A #1 recruiting class revolving around the #1 prospect in the land would go along way to silences all the morons that think Duke is fading away (the worst is the UK fans, who think Duke is done even though they went to the NIT last year).
November 13th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Let me clarify…Barnes is huge just from a recruiting prospective. Irving was a much bigger deal in terms of actual team success, because Duke hasn’t had a pg to run K’s offense since Duhon left.
Still, we get barnes, anything less than a nat’l championship next year will be a failure.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
I don’t think Dr. J ever dunked from the line in the NBA. Could be wrong, tho.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I love this idea of honouring the greatest to ever play the game. We knew it back in the days before his first retirement, and I even hated when the merciless press was on his case knowing that he would not be playing forever. Of course we did not know he would retire so early (for sake likely with the urging of Stern to keep the gambling folks and organised crime away from the NBA; always consider his father’s murder). And then he came back and still shined with his team and later though only individually.
I would love to see a repeated simulation of Lebron and Jordan and then Kobe and Jordan one-on-one with their supporting casts in place on a clear-out using his simulation from the ages of 22-34 derived from digitisation of film of his play.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Tampa’s stoned at work. Again.
