Gary Danielson: Playoff! Playoff! Playoff!
1-liner, College Football, Media Gossip/Musings November 13th. 2009, 11:30amGary Danielson: The outspoken CBS football analyst is an advocate of a college football playoff. That’s great! Gary, please voice that opinion repeatedly during the SEC title game. “As we approach who will play in college football’s title game … CBS’ lead analyst, Gary Danielson, argues that any team from the powerful SEC that survives, even with one loss, should get in.” As in, over Texas, Boise State, TCU, or Cincinnati? Not quite. “Danielson would like a ‘mini-playoff’ with top teams rewarded with byes and a format that would continue to factor in ‘opinion and voting.’” Danielson thinks we’ll see a playoff. A PLAYOFF MAKES SENSE. You have two strong months (Sept/Oct) and then often wait six weeks or more for one game. It is the opposite of the NCAA tournament, the World Cup, MLB, NBA, NFL, etc. [USA Today]

I never comment on college football but i will say this:
I dont believe Boise should be in the title game. TCU? yes. Texas? yes. Cincy? Maybe.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Does a playoff make some sense? Yes
But so does the increased popularity in college football and money being brought in by the BCS…the university presidents like it, the NCAA likes it and the TV networks like it
At some point the constant calling for something that will never happen gets old…maybe one day you’ll get your plus-one but that will be it
November 13th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Wow, a CBS guy thinks that a one loss SEC team is better than any other undefeated team. Surprise, surprise.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:41 am
ND fights for their gator bowl lives tomorrow!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 11:42 am
To be clear, Gary’s playoff involves the 8 best SEC teams and no one else.

TBL’s daily post for something that won’t even be discussed for 5 years, due to a $750 MILLION CONTRACT THROUGH 2014
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/sports/ncaafootball/19bcs.html
The end of the ESPN deal coincides with the date — 2014 — through which the B.C.S. commissioners have agreed to keep their current championship system in place. The commissioners met last April and considered a playoff proposal by Mike Slive, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, but voted against it and put off considering any changes until the end of the next television deal.
/HELLO? DOES ANYBODY READ THESE POSTS???
November 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Where is the damn college football post! And the NFL weekend post! I am posting my paper picks next.
Full disclosure:
Real betting was 1-2 last weekend for -$35.
Damn Eagles and Broncos could not score fuckin’ more for the overs.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:56 am
If a playoff involves an SEC team having to play at a better seeded Ohio State team in December, sign me the fuck up.
/like that’s EVER going to happen.

TBL’s daily post for something that won’t even be discussed for 5 years, due to a $750 MILLION CONTRACT THROUGH 2014
I don’t see what the problem with discussing this now is. Going to a playoff, if it ever happens, will be such a radical departure from what Div. I football has known that it’s going to take some discussion of how it happens. And I think it’s appropriate that that discussion take place well ahead of time so that the process is not half-assed if it does happen.
We’re also not going to Mars for like 20 years, but does that mean we should stop talking right now about how we’re going to get there?
November 13th, 2009 at 11:57 am
I think the TBL staff are mailing it today after getting drunk last night. That’s okay of course for mission duty, but these posts today are not indicative of such forthright prowess for our worthy cause. Return to “battle stations” men.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:58 am
This article is not even about a playoff, that’s the funny thing. Gary Danielson wants Florida to play Alabama twice in a row, and then have a plus one, where they can play again. That’s all he wants.
If it were possible to get a playoff, I’d be cool with 12 teams, and 4 byes. I’d be happier with 16 teams.
JPQ, let’s get them to change it this year. I’ll start making signs, you tuck in your T shirt, and we’ll do this thing.
November 13th, 2009 at 11:58 am
I’m just thankful we haven’t had a Notre Dame or Michigan post so far today.

Hey can you be our new college football guy for TBL to replace that Big Brett dude who is slacking even when he is writing lately?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Hey Paolo, if this is where we are posting our bets, Broncos -3.5 this weekend.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Eh, we could learn SOMETHING. But you’re right, it’s most likely not worth the cost. However, we should stil explore space.

Texans – when is this happening?
i’d like to be prepared.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
we’re talking about going to mars and stuff. i think theres going to be a time in this world where this is simply too many people. i wouldnt want to be here 200 years from now.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
what’s on Mars? Rocks and so forth. Basically natural resources, right? Even if it’s habitable, by some miracle, that’s thousands of years of humanity away. That planet is 40 million miles away. There’s no transportation back and forth, ever.
They’ve sent probes there, they’ve got some data. It’s a planet, and it’s really, really far away. We’re sitting on a planet.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
there
November 13th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Already have a plan for that Texas. Get to your safe house(s) and be well-armed and stocked in your vehicle. Trust no one, as most folks are already your enemy and cannot help you but only become liabilities. Not even hot bitches in such circumstances unless you can …well never mind.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
NASA hasn’t been back to the moon in 35 years, because it’s dangerous and fruitless. And the moon is only 250K miles away. Mars is 150 times as far away, when it’s the closest. What can you possibly accomplish, other than planting a flag. That’s all we’ve done on the moon.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
theres no possible way to live on Mars right now. There’s no water. There’s ice, but its way below surface. mars is pointless to continue to visit.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Is there any other planet worth visiting, let alone feasible to possibly get to?
November 13th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
college football is interesting because there is no playoff. the appeal of the basketball tournament is the # of games, and the possibility for epic upsets. a 16 seed over a 1? interesting in basketball, not all that unusual in football. people still get riled up over USC calling themselves national champs in 2003. i honestly have no idea who won the basketball tournament.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
ms: I skip ballin as well, but even that at least changes it’s focus daily. It’s the daily rehashing of the same thing I don’t get here, but I’ve said my piece and you are right. I’ll let it go.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
@Dirt. Those are perfectly rational viewpoints. I just like the idea of pushing our boundaries as far out as we can possibly go. People are meant to explore and find and organize new territories. Besides Mars may have been incredibly earth-like in the past so it’s reasonable to think that there is a lot of natural resources worth mining there. I’m not saying this is something that’s going to happen in our lifetimes, but eventually I do think it’s logical and rational that we expand beyond Earth.
Why yes I do watch The Universe on History Channel.

NFL Picks Paper Only
$8 Denver -3.5
$11 Cincy +7
$7 Tampa +10
$21 AZ/Seattle O47
Last week on paper 2-3 -$8.75
Season To Date On Paper 15-19-2 -$98.75
Not my year for real either, so looking forward to the playoffs already.
About the time the games are on the NFL network on Thursday nights is the time of year also for the NFL when more of the games become more meaningless and are hyped up like for last night. Even on this site in an unprecedented ESPN’d faux pas by Bsanders!
You are nuts if you think either of those teams will “turn it around” with endless wins to make the playoffs, as is the case for many other teams already. But of course this means some can feel better about not missing any of those games even when they were good.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

economist just had an article talking about how we are nearing a point where global birth rates are reaching sustainment levels (2.1 children/couple). that coupled with technology gains may make all the malthusian (/duffy’d) worries obsolete
November 13th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
i think we have to at some point or a lot of people (billions) are going to have to start dying and thats nothing i want a part of.

I watch the history channel too. It’s 40 million miles when it’s the closest. There’s nothing we can even build that can travel that distance in less than several years. And now you want to fill spaceships with iron ore, or gold, and bring them back? That sounds like a pretty big waste of a pretty big pile of money.
We’re busy in this country trying to get people to stop trucking soda and bottled water across the country, because it’s wasteful of fossil fuels. We’ve got a planet. We can stop pulling fish out of the ocean 6 million at once, to sell cans of tuna for 50 cents here, before we need to try and figure out how to travel at warp speed to Mars to pick up a load of shale.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Can we send those who watch/appear on Maury to “explore” the sun?

i think we have to at some point or a lot of people (billions) are going to have to start dying and thats nothing i want a part of.
Exactly. I’m not saying we have to find a new home planet anytime soon, but really really long term, yeah we should find outlets for the Earth’s population to move to because Earth will eventually get blown up or absorbed by the sun or there will be a massive extinction event which tends to happen even couple hundred million years or so.
Gotta think of the big picture people.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
I get what you’re saying, but we have fish farms in south america that control their own ecosystem without disturbing the area around it. Salmon farms, too.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

I’m not saying this is something we gotta do now or even can do right now. But if we’re going to do it a hundred or two hundred years from now, the basic work on it has to start somewhere.

i think we have to at some point or a lot of people (billions) are going to have to start dying and thats nothing i want a part of.
There’s a billion people who live in abject poverty right now, and millions of people die of starvation every year. What might help is investing some billions and billions of dollars into infrastructure worldwide to improve farming. But we don’t have any billions and billions of dollars for that, because we’re going to fucking Mars, to plant a flag. But first, back to the moon, to straighten our flag that we put there 40 years ago.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
You know it’s funny we’re talking about this because NASA just put out a press release saying they’ve found a significant source of water on the moon.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
there are african farmers that are working to take back the deserts as farmland. we need to think of and develop techniques to make this world more inhabitable
November 13th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
There’s no money in improving another countries infrastructure, unless the country can pay for repairs, which if it could it would’ve repaired it already. Companys and First world countries make money when the little nation is dirt poor.

do me a favor. Walk southeast for a while from right where you are. Stop when you see a signifigant source of water. It may take a few days, but you’ll get there. Water, we’ve got.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
We’re losing a lot of our water to pollution, increased cities and droughts, though. Deserts are expanding. If you want to get crazy with it, we can talk about companies buying up fresh water lakes, and Coca Cola.
/Damn you “Blue Gold”

do me a favor. Walk southeast for a while from right where you are. Stop when you see a signifigant source of water. It may take a few days, but you’ll get there. Water, we’ve got.
I wasn’t saying that we should mine the moon for water. But since you mentioned it, yes we do have a significant source of water on this planet, but 90+% of it is salt water and the U.S. has exactly ONE desalinization plant capable of serving a city sized population (it’s in Tampa in case you were curious).
November 13th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
GSG, if you want technology for a Mars trip, why not spend some $$$ on technology to desalinate and purify ocean water. That’s right here. We don’t need water from the stupid moon. Water that’s 250 thousand miles away isn’t helping anybody or anything.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
U.S. has exactly ONE desalinization plant
so we have the technology, we just don’t implement it. That’s even dumber. Let’s go to Mars!
November 13th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I never said I wanted the dumb moon water. DeSaltination is expensive and it doesn’t halp the really small, poor nations that are inland.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Space travel is a good idea, however when you spend all of your nations money funding dumb as fuck projects that serve no purpose except to get you reelected and we end up being piss poor as a result, it isn’t reasonable to keep pushing. If the Chinese are the first to Saturn or Jupitar or Saturn or whatever I dont think it would have the same effect as us landing on the moon.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
so we have the technology, we just don’t implement it. That’s even dumber. Let’s go to Mars!
I wasn’t using that as a rationalization for going to another planet. I was bringing that up as an unrelated interesting fact that seemed to dovetail nicely with what we were saying.
Point is, we’ve been looking at the moon for hundreds of years and even visited it a few times and only now have we even discovered that there is water there. How do we know what’s on Mars until we take a closer look?
But no, I’m not saying the solution to any water shortages on this planet is getting it from another.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
i just dont think the world can handle the population increase it will have 200-300 years from now. something drastic will have to happen
November 13th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
well the crunch on resources will eventually knock down the birth rate.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
What a politician you are Miz. The big picture for after we are all dead, for our children and our children’s children is your next line right?
I’ll worry about this month long before the next thirty years.
Prudent weekly planning for imminent, pertinent, and critical objectives makes a lifetime of prosperity for most of us lest you are tenured on some campus, feeding off the public trough (legitimately or usually illegitimately), some Wall Street thief in the name of “financial innovation,” or just another crooked politician.
