KG to Boston … Done Deal?
Uncategorized July 30th. 2007, 9:08pm
The Boston Herald is calling the KG-to-Boston scenario a done deal, which is completely catching us offguard. We’re gearing up for our NFL previews, and had no idea this business was still in the works. The deal is supposedly Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a No. 1 pick for Garnett. Seems like a bit much, no?
Boston must really think it can compete this year with a trio of Ray Allen, KG and Paul Pierce (and Kendrick Perkins, while still a project, ain’t half bad, either). And in the East, the Celtics probably can be a top 3-4 team with this unit. As for the Wolves … can you imagine them not pulling the trigger? Foye, Corey Brewer and Gerald Green would be an athletic trio, and if you mix in some Al Jefferson … a playoff spot in a year or so isn’t out of the question.

To me, good deal for both teams. The Celtics have decided their position is to win now, and when you have that philosophy, there is no reason to shepherd in prospects and get them to develop while holding on to salary sucking, older stars (are you listening Kupchak?) You pick one route and stick to it (see: Blazers, Sonics). This helps both teams because it allows the Wolves to COMPLETELY rebuild (they’re a 8 seed the year after next, and once Nash, Duncan begin to diminish will be right there with Seattle, Portland, Utah, Memphis in the new West), and it allows the C’s to COMPLETLELY go for titles. There’s no reason to think they’re not the favorites to win the East, though they still aren’t as good as the Big 3 in the West. But we’ll see.

I would have never done the Ray Allen move…but since it happened then this move is justified. KG, Pierce and Allen give you a 3 year window to get to the finals and maybe even winning one. In the long run this is nothing but Great for the Wolves. They have Size, quickness and scoring and enough young guys that when they get good and are a player away (most likely a good Rebounder) they will have assets to move.

Horrible move.
KG will punch Doc Rivers in the mouth before the all-star break. Bill Simmons’ man-crush will be podcast before mid-next-week.

As a Celtic fan, this makes me sad and happy… happy cuz we’re contenders, sad because we’ve given up our future. Watching the Wolves in a few years will be difficult.

i dont think its set in stone that gomes will be included. i’d love to be able to hold onto him. otherwise we’re not going to have any players left.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
If the C’s aren’t a Top 2 team in the East for the next three years, Doc Rivers is a worse coach that I thought.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
this could become the basketball equivalent of the Herschel Walker deal

OK so Minn waits to pull the trigger on a deal and loses out on the 5 pick in a stacked draft for a future number 1 on a Boston with 3 all stars in the East. The wolves lost value by waiting.

I love how Celts fans are freaking out about it. I think they’re forgetting that KG is KG, one of the best in the game: He has range, good FT%, nifty down low, and can grab 25 boards in a given night. He’s taken Minnesota to the playoffs in the West by himself, and now he has Paul Pierce (who’s also carried a team to the playoffs) who’s in his prime still, granted it’s the tail end. And there’s Ray Allen who is still a contributor when healthy.
The supporting cast nearly as good as any other in the East, but the Gomes loss will hurt that unit.
Once they add a veteran PG, they’re set for 3 years of glory, then they can use an exception that year to pick up a decent FA (since, hopefully, now players will be excited to play in Boston) and then rid themselves of the albatross contracts in 4 years, after they’ve had some good success.
That was rambling, I know.

i think most boston fans are extremely excited about the deal

Who gives a crap? The Celtics won’t win anything, KG got out of the first round one time, their coach sucks, this has flop written all over it and didn’t say KG say he didn’t want to play in Boston

This move is like the Braves move today…..good all the way around. This move make the C’s relevant again in the NBA which is good for basketball. Plus this just saved Ainge’s job BIG TIME.
5 Bucks when this deal goes through…..Simmons gets wasted for a week!

Hench and J-Bug are thrilled. Jacko not so much.

“And in the East, the Celtics probably can be a top 3-4 team with this unit. ”
No, they’re definitely the number one contender now. Who else has a better lineup in the East right now? Maybe Chicago? I don’t think so.
By the way, in an informal poll of all Celtics fans I know (self included) everyone is on board with this deal, so I don’t know who the angry Celtics fans are one commenter referenced.

rkm…and you and all you’re friends are the only celtics fans in the world that matter right?

The arms race between the Knicks and Celtics continues …
July 31st, 2007 at 1:00 am
Foye
McCants
Brewer
Craig Smith
Al Jefferson
Gerald Green
Future #1 picks
Top 10 pick next year
I’d say the T’Wolves are in a decent position in 3-4 years. I don’t think this is a Championship roster in 3-4 years, but IF DEVELOPED PROPERLY, I think they have a great roster to be a top 10 team in 3-4 years.
July 31st, 2007 at 4:08 am
The wolves are not in a decent position. The team is made of role players. They have a no point guard. They have 5 guys who want 15 plus shots a game, Davis, Foye, McCants, Jefferson, Telfair. They missed getting the 5 pick this year to take a first rounder next (lottery protected) year which will be in the 20s. Steal for the Celtics as Garnett is by far the best big man in the East.
July 31st, 2007 at 4:19 am
McCants is garbage, but - as someone else said - if they can get a role-playing PF who can rebound/defend (Noah would be perfect), this could be a playoff team.
As for the Celtics … agree with the poster who said they have a 2-3 window for the title.
July 31st, 2007 at 4:43 am
Celtics made out like bandits. They gave up nothing. For KG. When Pierce was out I believe those guys broke some record straight losses. Jefferson is very average, he only looks good against the sorry East big men. An Green hasn’t proven he can do anything but dunk. And the Celtics got to keep Rondo, the only guy that seemed to show improvement. If the big three stay healthy, they’ll crush the East.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:23 pm
lol @ people saying the Celts are the #1 contender now. Give me a break. They have two superstars past their prime. Yes, KG is past his prime. He hasn’t been in the playoffs in how long? I know he has a bad team, but so do plenty of other players (Hmm, Kobe?). The dude is a good player, but not great. He never has been. Great players get it done. He hasn’t. Sorry. Seems like a nice dude and has a great work ethic, but he’s just not on that level.
Secondly, are we forgetting about Detroit, Miami, Chicago and Cleveland? Orlando will be improved as well. I think this makes the Celts a sure fire playoff team (I wasn’t convinced with just Allen), but no way in hell are they automatically the favorite? That is hilarious. I’d be surprised if they even have home court in the first round.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:24 pm
sean you are ridiculous…KG not great? Are you kidding me? He has put up unbelievable stats his entire career, he’s good for 20-12 every single night. And with that said, his stats don’t do show everything he doesn day and day out. And for those saying the draft pick isn’t valuable, MN is getting back their first round pick that went with Wally, so most likely a top ten pick PLUS an additional first round pick in the future which most likely will be in the 20’s. I would imagine Boston will take a while to mesh and post a good enough record to get in the playoffs and then roll once in the playoffs to the conf. championship in the weak East.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:29 pm
As a Cleveland fan, pardon me if I’m not impressed.
Let’s see: Three all-stars. Bravo. All over the age of 30. And not one has seen the NBA finals. All of a sudden, a poor GM brings these underachievers together to be led by an even worse coach.
Yawn.

Hey Dario, although I live in Boston, I’m not a Celtics fan. But I am a huge hoop fan and watch almost every Celtics game, Jeffereson is much better than an average player and he plays well against both conferences. As a matter of fact, he had pretty good games versus KG himself last year.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:46 pm
At least KG will have someone to carry the 4th quarter now.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:50 pm
The pick is probably the one the Wolves owe the Celtics now. They owe the clippers a pick the first time the don’t pick in the top 10, and then 2 years later (NBA rule of not being allowed to trade consecutive year 1st round picks) they owe the celtics an unprotected 1st rounder. I am assuming they are getting the rights to that one back here.
July 31st, 2007 at 2:32 pm
The key here is they got Ratliff’s expiring contract. With money to spend, the T’Wolves can sign a PG.
Whoever said Green can only dunk: he’s been improving, he’s still young. Yes, he can dunk. But once he’s developed and he needs time, he’ll be competing for an all-star spot every year.
For those who said the T’Wolves should have done this when Boston offered the #5 pick, who would the T’Wolves had drafted? Connelly was gone, it was too high to pick Acie Law. We pick Noah? Yi? I don’t think the addition of Noah or Yi would have made this trade any better than what it is now.
Go trade, Celtics can compete for a few years, T’Wolves can develop and sign a PG & PF once Ratliff’s contract is up.

And Sean finally comes through with the common sense. Im sorry to report to everyone that seemingly you’ve all forgotten that the C’s won an amazing 24 games last year, tanking down the stretch. Niiiiiiice…
You all are nuts, drinkin to much of that Green Kool-aid. First remember that LeBron, and Dwane Wade play in the East. Then we have TOP CONTENDERS Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, Washington with Gilbert and you still have a “reloaded” Nets team to jump that cant seem to find a way to miss or succeed in the playoffs.
This makes the Celtics Better, albiet I cannot fathom how much better when you traded away all the young talent to bring in one guy to play with two other older guys. Keep in mind the C’s have no bench players worth half a turd anymore, and they have no young players to bring along and learn from this trio. Not only does this mortgage the future by losing all the talented pieces, but all you have left on your hands is a new version of the three headed monster in new jersey, the nets, whom have been pluggin this game for the past 5 years. Got um to one? conference title game.
I say the Celtics win right around 40 games MAX. that would be a 16 game improvement from last season.
The thing that I think EVERYONE is forgetting here is that NONE OF THESE THREE ARE LEADERS.
Garnett could be the best PF the game has ever seen, but he cannot lead a team and probably would prefer not to; why do you think he sat up in minny for so long waiting for them to build around him.
Jesus SHuttlesworth has never been a vocal leader on the floor which is what you may expect from a sg, but his consistancy makes him a good player, same as garnett.
Paul Pierce is not a leader, as proven by the fact that the Celts were tanking games in December last season. That is not the breed of leadership.
Put it together, you have 3 guys that have been relatively consistant and rather productive for a LONG TIME ALREADY in the nba. Lack of leadership and role-playing will deterr this team from being a TOP CONTENDER like so many of you homers laughably suggest.
July 31st, 2007 at 3:05 pm
Johnny is spot on. As for “Ihatesean,” hey man, I’ve got nothing but love for KG. He’s one of the best at his position in the game, no doubt about it. He is a tireless competitor and puts it all on the court. You can’t not respect that. He isn’t a great player though. He is extremely talented. Perhaps one of the most talented players this league has ever seen, but that doesn’t equate to a great player. That word gets thrown around too easily these days. 20-12 is hardly the stats of a great player. Those are the stats of a “good” player. He had that one great season where he looked like he finally may be coming into form, but we haven’t seen anything close to it since, and he has seemingly leveled off at his current state.
Adding 20-12 to a team that already had 20-12 (Jefferson) and giving up a ton of other pieces, albeit mediocre ones, doesn’t suddenly make you the best team in the East. With a Healthy Wade and Shaq, and Toronto improving, Orlando maybe improving (Howard is going to be a great player), and Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago, the Celtics have a long way to go. They will be in the mix, but they are far from a frontrunner.

Paul Pierce is a leader, he was hurt last year. That man IS the Celtics.
July 31st, 2007 at 4:34 pm
If Paul Pierce IS your team, then maybe it’s time to find a new team…
… unless of course you’re allergic to the NBA Finals.
July 31st, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Paul Pierce IS the Celtics, I 100% agree. I also remind you of the fact that LEADERS DONT TANK GAMES and take time off when the crap hits the fan, and that IS EXACTLY what Paul Pierce did last year, has done other times before in the past, and is what distinguishes him from TRUE LEADERS. Paul Pierce was the leader by default merely because no one else on that pathetic team could score more points per game than he.
I’m sure that Pierce was truely hurt last year too; wasnt he complaining to the coaches that he wanted to play, that he could play, then they shelved him the rest of the year so they could lose a lot and get the top pick in the lottery, OOPS. THIS ORGANIZATION HAS FLAWED LOGIC.
1. They think Pierce is a natural floor leader…. NOT
2. They believe in tanking games to get the top pick…. Backfire
3. They actually accumulate good young talent, only to spurt their load at the first chance of a TITLE OR NOTHING FOREVER scenerio that has about 2 years to pan out at most.
4. They think it only takes 3 players to make the nba finals.
5. Its starting to make sense as to why Paul Pierce is the revered leader of this dismal organization.
July 31st, 2007 at 6:44 pm
I’d take games if I had no chance of making the playoffs and had a chance of landing Oden or Durant. That’s the NBA’s problem, not a team leader. A team leader does what’s best for the TEAM. What was best for the TEAM was to try and get Oden or Durant. It didn’t work out, but it was a smart thing to do. Until the NBA changes the draft, teams will continue to tank if there is a possibility of getting a player the caliber of Oden and Durant.
