Kevin Garnett is Still a Jerk
1-liner, NBA November 17th. 2009, 12:00pmKevin Garnett, Still a Prick: “Garnett wasn’t exactly welcoming to Pacers rookies A.J. Price and Tyler Hansbrough when he visited Indianapolis this summer to film a Wheaties commercial. As Garnett exited Conseco Fieldhouse, Indiana assistant coach Lester Conner asked him to walk over and meet Price and Hansbrough, who were working out. Garnett wasn’t exactly friendly. According to Conner, Garnett continued to walk out and remarked, ‘[Expletive] your rookies.’ Said Price, laughing, ‘That pretty much let me know where I was at on the totem pole. I thought I was going to have a chance to talk to him for a second so I can say, ‘What’s up?’ and introduce myself. But I guess he shot that down real quick.’ [Boston Globe]

He must have been forcefed shit by Tom Gugliotta when he first arrived in ‘95.

I won’t say so much as Garnett is a prick at his playing level for not wanting to meet up with unproven rookies like those including especially that soon-to-be has-been Hansbrough, which I am confident he is asked to do all the time, but he could have risen above the occasion to cement the relationships to endure for many years after he is done playing at this point in his career.
Garnett is a known trash talker, who can usually back it up, and is known for saying many a dick thing on the court, but let’s not forget that it was he before Kobe who made the leap right out of high school back in 1996 to the NBA in which many a rightful aspiring talented player has followed since instead of being usually used by some big name public school stashing plenty of private profits in the name of any given “student athlete’s” “education” with high drop-out rates to this day.
See the very thorough discussion yesterday on Brandon Jennings for more on that point with which way too many college basketball types disagree to this day for no more reason than selfish interest in a game that is no longer even second-class on the global level.

waiting on shaq to break a backboard on this muthafuka
November 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I’m not exactly sure what Paolo is trying to say and I don’t know how anyone could say Garnett wasn’t a prick in this situation. Say hi to them, be nice to them and then rip their fucking heads off on the court if you want to. You don’t have to be an asshole off the court.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
why does kevin garnett have to be nice?
November 17th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
He was my favorite player from when I was 8 yrs old until I was 19. Now I feel like I barely know him anymore.

hes a prick, but an incredibly talented prick.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Doesn’t have to be. He could have said “no thanks” to the offer instead of “Fuck your rookies.”
November 17th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Did you know that Kevin Garnett has made almost 250 million dollars playing basketball? You’d think he might be mellow in real life, at last a little bit.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
He is a prick but for whatever reason he is the only guy that can get Amare to play his best on both sides of the ball.

Tommy Gun!! Right between the eyes!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Reminds me of that SNL bit with Phil Hartman as Michael Eisner. “I made over $64 million dollars last week. How are you?”

Him and his barbed wire tattoo..

Didn’t Bird do something similar to Jordan? Sorry to those who wanted their nice kodak moment for someone like Doug Collins to recount during some telecast in January, but that’s pretty much how rookies have always been treated in team sports on all levels. It wasn’t like he hazed them.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Does this mean that anytime I eat Wheaties I have to pound my chest?
November 17th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
yo paolo do you know that garnett had every intention of going to college and getting “used” by the system until he found out he couldnt get in because his act was too low to be cleared to play? he wasnt trying to be whatever your making him out to be, a trailblazer and what not. he simply couldnt get into college and had no other option

More surprising than KG being a dick was I thought that Paolo had become Lazarus and had arisen from the banhammer to post again, until I see that he commented at 8AM “before the storm”. Did this post get pulled earlier and get reposted or something?

Bigger jerk: Phil Jackson
November 17th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I saw it this morning when I was reading through the poo-poo discussion you started last night, for some reason. I bailed last night, because I was grossed out, and I read that “shit” anyway.

Get out of here with your facts! There is no place for them.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
This. i loved the guy when he was in Minny. Unselfish team player who seemed to show respect for the game. Now, he’s probably the biggest dick in the NBA.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
T-wolves fans figured out a long time ago that Garnett is a racist and an asshole. Nothing new here.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
A friend of mine worked at a Humane Society where Garnett took his dog for surgery. She said Garnettt was a total asshole and never paid the bill. Eventually, they sent it to a collection agency.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
What did I miss?
November 17th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
the rookies should have walked over to KG

Paolo got called to the principal’s office

TBL After Dark: It’s like a car crash
November 17th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Every time I think of KG now I remeber Jose Calderon standing up to him and talking shit right back.
Notice that KG will never EVER go for dudes that can fight back. He seems to pick on stiff-looking white guys on the court (Matt Bonner, Andrew Bogut, etc). I guess its a respect thing; you have to earn his.
I miss the KG in Minny; he was slightly less insane.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Bull! It’s called junior college, then transfer after a year or two. You know better than that.
The ends certainly more than justified the means.
For most of you who commented on Garnett who obviously did not read at least beyond the first sentence in my comment above due to ADD or some other form of impatience beyond the length of a soundbyte, I Garnett never defended him for being a prick though I certainly am not surprised given how often this happens to accomplished people like him in all fields. Read the comment again more slowly.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
True, but that usually means guys like that have not suffered a solid ass-kicking in too long and is just begging for it when inevitably he crosses the wrong dude of whatever race.
Never be deceived by mere appearances and be careful out there even if you are not a jerk as is Garnett much of the time it appears on court.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
erase the second Garnett in the last paragraph in post 33 …
November 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
It seems as tho he has gone to one of the most likeable players to a completely unlikeable prick in record time. Screw em!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
paolo, for as high as a recruit garnett was, junior college wasnt a REAL option. he would have never done that. obviously the whole straight to the nba thing clearly worked for him, but it wasnt his first choice and was left as the only optionthat made sense
November 17th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I miss the KG in Minny; he was slightly less insane.
You mean like when he started running down the arsenal he was going to bring to take out an opponent?
Garnett strikes me like Jordan minus all the commercials — extremely motivated, extremely wound-up, extremely competitive. Why would he meet with guys who haven’t even taken the court against him?
Great talents are rarely nice people.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
We agree that it was his best choice but disagree totally that it was his ONLY option back in 1996. You argue that it was not a REAL option and I argue that indeed it was even back then. Does it matter though if he made the best move anyway?
Nowadays for some future “Garnetts” Europe is a better option than is college for one-and-done.
A few guys on here have to get over that point and accept that US college basketball is no longer even second-class globally and fewer of its players will be in the NBA but a few of the bigger guys playing center or power forward who need time to grow physically as they develop their games.
See the discussion on Jennings from yesterday via typing Brandon Jennings on the search where we debated that point exhaustively.

Larry “Grandmama” Johnson.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Was Grandmama thought to be a lottery pick out of high school? If so, why would he go to UNLV after JC?
November 17th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Players were not pursuing the high school to pro route at that time, but he was very much well known coming out of high school.
