A lot of Newspapers Won’t Be in Vancouver for the Olympics, Blame “The Economy”
1-liner, Media Gossip/Musings November 18th. 2009, 10:50amThe Economy and the Olympics: The following papers did not even request credentials to cover the 2010 Olympics – Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Baltimore Sun, Boston Herald, Charlotte Observer, (Colorado Springs) Gazette, (Hackensack) Record, Hartford Courant, Indianapolis Star, Kansas City Star, LA Daily News, Newsday, Palm Beach Post, and St. Petersburg Times. Clearly, none of these papers were aware of the monster traffic that Yahoo – which obviously has the portal advantage – generated during the 2008 Olympics. Yahoo, meanwhile, will be requesting 21 credentials, which only trails USA Today and SI. ESPN.com, surprisingly, has only requested seven credentials. [SBJ]

What else would they “cite”?

The Indpls Star barely covers Butler basketball which is a 10 minute drive from downtown.
No beat reporters for Purdue, and the only consistent coverage of IU is from a “blog”

I almost got credentialed for my blog (for serial) but couldn’t go because of stupid school. They must be hardup for coverage at the Olympics.

Fucking newspapers are just dead. This coupled with all those NY papers offices being raided.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:59 am
One third of the people they have to cover Brett Favre.

They might be hurting for snow at the Olympics. Long-range forecast for the Pacific Northwest is not favorable.

seriously? in the hotbed of basketball there’s not a beat reporter for purdue at the indy star??? wow!

How much of this has to do with the economy and how much of it is a matter of people simply not caring about the Winter Olympics? If figure skating gets the biggest ratings (and I think it does)and is the most popular sport at the games, how many of the people who make up that audience are looking to open up the paper the next day to the sports section to read about figure skating results?

The AJC was the largest paper not to cover the Super Bowl. That paper has been bleeding money for some time. Combined that with the fact that we don’t even know what snow is here and it’s not surprising at all.

I’m scandalized that the Colorado Springs Gazette is sending someone to the Olympics. /Snerk

Agree with Darrell. This is a Winter Olympics issue. No one in America cares because the US doesn’t dominate the winter games. Combine that with it being on the same continent it’s easy to justify not being there.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Perfectly timed post.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:16 am
I mean, not sending. D’oh.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:18 am
The fact it would be easy to go makes it easy to justify not doing so?
November 18th, 2009 at 11:23 am
Well, are the Olympics appearing on the ESPN family of networks?
Because if they were, they’d be talking about the relative strengths of the Scandinavian bobsled teams nightly.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:37 am
simply put, the way the olympics are produced, both winter and summer games, it’s sports for people who don’t like sports.
seriously, how often do you see televised (on nbc) coverage of baseball or hockey or boxing? it’s mostly schlock like figure skating, gymnastics and garbage like that.
can’t remember the last time i watched any olympics. might have been some hockey eight years ago, but that may have been the last time.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Why is this surprising for the likes of ESPN given the lack of coverage of the Olympics on their part since 2000? One just has to go online for highlights any more on the NBC sports site.

Jimmy weighs in well yet again. +1. Although I don’t get why even hockey fans in the US don’t like the Olympic hockey. They sure as heck do in the other countries.

I meant that they can get results in almost real time and see interviews right at deadline on TV. No need to send a reporter there to file a story when they can grab an angle by watching live events.
