Here’s Your Chance to Deliver, Bud
1-liner, Baseball November 19th. 2009, 5:30pmBud Selig: The clumsy MLB commish plans on “tightening” up baseball’s postseason schedule. Great! Then, he followed it up with, “it’s difficult.” This left Rob Neyer “guardedly optimistic” which might as well be code for, “not happening.” So Selig will whiff on this and instant replay. Outstanding. Changes in baseball come at a glacial pace. That’s sad. [AP, ESPN]

I thought I saw on ESPN yesterday that Selig had already decided that no changes to the post season schedule were going to happen.

Plus not to mention that some MLB teams lost money this year and if the economy doesnt pick up they can expect more and more.
But attendance records are up!

Big things going on with the Cy Young balloting (big defined as “I care about them”). Keith Law is going on our local idiot station to justify leaving Carpenter off his ballot in twenty minutes. This is going to be like Christmas.

Three spots wheels, Law voted for Vazquez second, Will Carroll voted for Dan Haren third. Only two times anybody else got named besides the big three. Hilariously, The Braves have to pay Javier Vazquez $70,000 for finishing fourth in the Cy Voting, which means Law just gave him $70,000 more or less.

Hmmm, no Gallardo on anyones ballot??? Brewers get fucked.
November 19th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
The homer den of inequity Keith Law is about to walk in is currently talking about how stupid anyone who doesn’t think Kurt Warner should be in the Hall of Fame is. The poor bastard.

Well, they are jumping out of airplanes onto midfield to for the pregame ceremonies. It is a tradition for their home games.

TST: I like him in this capacity, but his prospect and draft evaluation is hi-lariously bad.

“Do you have a background in analysis? I don’t think so? So how can you question my background in analysis?”
One of the St. Louis guys is arguing Carpenter could have struck out more people if he wanted to and he tried to get ground balls and Law should have taken that into account.
November 19th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Yeah I cant remember. Damn.

November 19th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Bottom line is Vasquez had a few extra starts and faced tougher offenses (770 to 705 runs on the year by non common opponents.) Doesn’t mean he made the right choice, but it isn’t crazy by any means. And the very fact that he is the only one sort of verifies that the right result occured. No way should it have been unanimous Carpenter over Vazquez.

The baseball problem is incredibly simple to solve.
1. Instant replay.
2. Move post-season back to October.
3. Adopt Pro Thunderball rules.

“see that’s the kind of old school nonsense that has absolutely no place in modern baseball analysis. “Put your team on your back” is not how major league front offices are determining value.”
“The nonsense is when you stick your nose in a book and don’t pay attention to the players on the field.”
“Why’d you waste so much time traveling around the country when you came up with a nonsense vote like that.”

Law makes no secret of his disdain for the Cardinals organization. I get the feeling that he was turned down for a front office position at one time, and is still holding a grudge. Or maybe La Russa told him to go fuck himself once. Or maybe he was given a Melvin everyday at school when he was a kid. Who knows?
And if today’s announcement doesn’t scream for a specific set of guidelines to use in voting for these awards, then I don’t know what does. The problem is, though, the writers are the ones who created the awards back in the “old days”, and as the P-D’s Joe Strauss said a couple years back, “it’s our awards, so we’ll vote the way we want.”
November 20th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Does anyone know the voting system for Cy Young? If Law had just put Carpenter on his ballot, at say 3rd even, would that have been enough for him to win? Same question for other voter…
November 20th, 2009 at 8:36 am
Fatty – Cy Young coming later this AM.
