Drunk Buffalo Bills Think They’re Getting Mike Shanahan or Bill Cowher. Ha!
NFL November 19th. 2009, 3:35pm
The beginning of coaching searches are always brimming with optimism – everyone is in play! The Buffalo Bills seem to think Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren and Brian Billick are potential targets to fill the seat previously occupied by Dick Jauron. Clearly, fans in Buffalo are drunk. The Bills aren’t getting any of those guys. The notoriously cheap franchise will need to spend money on a big-name coach, but why would any of those guys go to Buffalo? The Bills have holes at all the key offensive spots- lack a capable QB and skill at the key positions (WR, RB), and they have the worst run defense in the league.
This isn’t Atlanta or Baltimore in 2008, or Denver in 2009. On the surface, all of those teams looked horribly bad, but the coaches stepped into situations with playmakers like Michael Turner, Roddy White, Brandon Marshall, the Ravens defense, a bevy of draft picks (Denver) and promising young QBs such as Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.
The Bills are more than a year away. If we had to rank the best job openings that could happen by season’s end, we’d go: 1) Chicago, 2) Tennessee, 3) Green Bay, 4) Carolina, 5) Washington, 6) Buffalo. [Buffalo News]

you forgot kyle orton
November 19th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
I seriously think Shanny is going to Chicago or Dallas. Leaning towards Chicago. 2 reasons, Jerry Jones isn’t there but Jay Cutler is. JC is Shanny’s boy.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
i could see billick in buffalo only for the fact i doubt seriously billick is on the top of anyone’s wish list.
think of it like a grade school test, which of the four names do not fit: brian billick, bill cowher, mike holmgren and mike shanahan?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
i dont see shanny wanting to go to a team with no draft picks
November 19th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
it will be hard for one of them to go to the bills when they are both going to the browns
as head coach and football prez
/just as delusional
November 19th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Yeah, he only got him fired, I’m sure he can’t wait to get back together.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
coop u are steelers fan right…would u trade vincent jackson for mendenhal straight up?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
@coop, Gonna have to explain how Cutler individually got Shanny fired.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
the defense got shanny fired.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Accurate 1 year ago, today, meh.
I dont know mmonast, Pit doesn’t really need a receiver, but I do like Jackson. Its too early to give up on Rashard, he’s shown flashes.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
anywhere that any of these coaches go to, they will be more than a year away.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
The notoriously cheap franchise will need to spend money on a big-name coach
TBL- did you miss what Mr Wilson had to say? “Anybody that says I’m cheap is looking down the wrong side of the street”
November 19th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
huh?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I’d love to see Cowher go to Cleveland just to see Stillers fans flip out.

Oh, and…IT’S BUFFALO!
November 19th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
i dont see shanny wanting to go to a team with no draft picks
what team is that?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Neither was Miami in 2008. Or New Orleans in 2006.
/anything can happen
//really believes that
November 19th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
irish, chicago starts in the 3rd round
November 19th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
I’d rather be drunk thinking I’m getting Mike Shanahan and be wrong than be sober and foolish enough to think my team is going to be good for 40 straight years, and be wrong 40 straight years.
How’s Sexy Rexy and the Sanshise workin’ out for ‘ya?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
BUFFALO ALL THE WAY THIS TIME
/I will continue to post this in every single Bills thread
November 19th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
You left out the part about the only team they can beat is the JETS.
/one game does a season make
November 19th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
I dont know about “individually,”, but by doing what Jay Jay does, lose big games and miss the playoffs. Big hand in losing the last 3 games of 2008 by throwing 2 TDs and 5 picks. Win one of those and they make the playoffs and Shanny probably still has a job.

I wouldn’t flip out at all..if he’s dumb enough to go there, it’s his funeral.

the browns are the cherynoble of the nfl. career suicide if you ask me. this is not a one year turn around like the dolphins

ill get there one of these days. next time ill just use 6 mile island
November 19th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
i wouldn’t go that far…the left side of the OL is set for at least 5 years and the DL isn’t altogether worthless.
plus they have 11 draft picks in the most loaded draft of the past decade and an owner willing to open the wallet for free agents. if they get the right front office, who knows?
there’s teams in worse shape.
/i will now go throw up because i don’t believe a word i just said
//joe thomas is the man

The Buffalo Bills seem to think Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren and Brian Billick are potential targets to fill the seat previously occupied by Dick Jauron.
I don’t want any of them.
I wanna follow the Atlanta model and get a good under the radar personnel man (Dimitroff), and a tough as nails unknown first timer like Smith who’ll throw a forearm shiver against Meangelo Hall’s dome on the sideline.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
i give reynolds major props for convincing the ncaa to grant him a 7th year of eligibility
November 19th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
TBL, the Bills beat the J-E-T-S, JETS. They do have a lot of holes but RB (Jackson and Lynch) and WR (Evans and others) are really not a problem. Run D has been hurt by injuries. Right on the QB thing unfortunately.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
He also played a huge role in the defense allowing 30, 30, and 52 respectively in those games.
/Cutler plays on defense too, right?

rs, I’m actually going to voluntarily watch the Orange tonight, mainly because I want to see first hand how terrible the Pac-10 is going to be this year.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
if many pts came of turnovers, more fault gets laid at the qbs feet.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Tg- i hope you like turnovers. You’re going to see about 400 of them tonight.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
but i don’t know if the points did…just sayin’
November 19th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
dayton beat gt, nice. lefty was that game on tv?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
funny how jake the snake was benched for cutler because shanahan said it was about getting to the superbowl and he ended up losing his job. i think they were on there way to making the playoffs that year too
November 19th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
So turnovers, 3 and outs, and ineffective play on offense doesn’t lead to more scoring chances for the other team?
Which leads to you looking up stats and saying he threw for so and so yards in garbage time after he had already lost and blah blah hes elite blah blah.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
turnovers that lead to nasty dunks, or just really stupid turnovers that fly into the stands?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
No idea. I listened to the first half of the radio broadcast on the internet. From what I gather, it was down to the wire.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
I doubt Cal will have any nasty dunk, but you will see plenty of length of the court passes and alley oops that end up in press row.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Listening to nova gameon radio … Cats struggling indeed
November 19th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Lovie isn’t getting fired because of the cheap as owners, although I pray he does and Fisher isn’t moving either.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
1) Chicago, 2) Tennessee, 3) Green Bay, 4) Carolina, 5) Washington, 6) Buffalo
I highly doubt Lovie Smith, Jeff Fisher, McCarthy, or John fox will be fired
November 19th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
i bet he wishes he had pit’s D so people wouldn’t notice.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Watching one of the 2 best teams in the conference probably isn’t the best way to go about doing that.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
what he said, tho i think smith has a chance to get the axe.
but feel free to add mangini.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Nova has 2 starters fouled out? nice…and why is Taylor King starting?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
If fisher can finish 7-9, which is completely possible, he’s definitely back.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
i bet he wishes he had pit’s D so people wouldn’t notice.
Probably just wishes he had a QB rating of close to 100 so only Browns fans would think he sucks…
November 19th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
3, 0, and 7.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
if they lose to detroit by 2 tds+ i could see him gone by next game
November 19th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
The Bills should try to get Turner Gill.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
I highly doubt Lovie Smith, Jeff Fisher, McCarthy, or John fox will be fired
if any/all go under .500 for the rest of the year, I think any/all could/get whacked. Fox has been on thin ice for two years, due to Cowher living in the neighborhood. The pressure in Chi-town has gotta be getting pretty intense, and Bud Adams is senile enough to can Fisher, especially after he wanted VY starting earlier than after they were 0-6. I could see him blaming Fisher for not making the playoffs and canning him (not fair, but Adams is nuts)
/not that I think these guys should get canned
November 19th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
I’ve been visiting my cousin at college, that’s why I haven’t been commenting, in case anyone was worried. They have a pc over there but I don’t know my damned password!

they got their black guy now for 7 games

im a browns fan and i don’t think fat ben sucks anymore.
he may be a rapist, a dumbass, a cousin fucker, the personification of everything that’s wrong with america and just an ugly, UGLY person, both in personality and appearnce.
but he’s gotten pretty good.

November 19th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I wouldn’t hire Cowher to coach my franchise, after spending the last 3 years bojangling for CBS. But i’m not a fat-cat good-ol boy owner.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
thank god youre ok!!
Awesome Duder! I just didn’t want anyone to think I od’d or anything.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Some team is going to be seriously disappointed by Cowher. I love the guy, but great coach he’s not.

not many coaches can win that consistently with so many shitty qbs. as soon as he got a good qb he won a sb.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
he is better than the guy who is currently coaching the team. funny how no one says tomlin is winning with cowhers players. let’s see how good of a coach if he was put in raheem morris’ position. for some reason i think the results would be similar
November 19th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I agree – Cowher was made by his coordinators. He was a terrible big game coach, regardless of whether he was the big favorite/underdog. I always get pissed off when I watch the NFL Films coverage of Super Bowl XXX and Cowher starts bragging to the linesman about his call to have an onside kick. He was so fucking proud of himself – like he just won the Super Bowl on that play. Even the Super Bowl against the Seahawks was a coaching debacle.
LET’S GO

November 19th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Hey did you know that he’s from Detroit?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Out of curiousity I just checked. 22 players won their 2nd ring last year.

Cowher’s players who went 8-8 in Cowher’s last year? Those aren’t Cowher’s players, they’re Kevin Colbert and Dan/Art Rooney players.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Understatement of the day. He made Marty Schottenhiemer look like a river boat gambler.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
I know you’ll want to file this under “phatjohnsn just hates on the Bills” but a serious question: Isn’t this what they’ve been attempting to do forever?
I’m not hating here, honest, but even Marv Levy wasn’t some grand name in NFL head coaching until he led the Bills to 4 Super Bowls.
I think trying 4 (or 5?) different times to hire that “under the radar”, “up and coming” coordinator in the past decade has taxed the fans pretty hard. Go get that big name for once, back up you’re “I’m not cheap” talk Ralphy, and show the fans that you’re trying. I feel like that alone would be a big step in the right direction for the whole franchise.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
that’s friggin awesome. great prank.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
lefty…yea, i saw it. i love how michigan fans love to talk shit about buckeye fans, and then go and ACT THE EXACT SAME WAY.
fuck michigan.

kinda agree w/ you in many ways, but I don’t have faith in any of these named guys. Parcells is the only guy who has repeatedly done it and done it successfully.
Ever since Polian left after his fight w/ Ralph, then Butler left w/ AJ Smith to go to San Diego, the brain drain started. They limped along, then did the model I described w/ Tom Donohoe from Pittsburgh, who interviewed three guys:
1. Marvin Lewis (a LB coach w/ him in Pitt and had just won the SB as DC
w/ the Ravens).
2. John Fox, the DC of the Giants who had just lost that Super Bowl
3. Gregg Williams, DC of the Titans
Lewis “interviewed poorly” and didn’t get the job. Williams did, but didn’t work out, so Donohoe went back to Pitt and got Mularkey. HE didn’t work out and they both left and Marv came back to fill in. The GM is a marketing guy in charge of structuring the Toronto deal.
Shanny and Holmgren were underwhelming as The Big Cheese, and the other two guys were fair at coaching only. That’s my real problem with it.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
I liked what you said til this, although Holmgren doesn’t really matter to me.
Mike Shanhan is 138-90-0 (Regular Season) and 8-5 (Postseason) including 3 Super Bowl wins.
I think Marv would be considered the greatest Bills coach ever and his career winning percentage is lower than Shanahans, albeit not by much, but Shanahan has the 3 SBs that Marv couldn’t get.
Also, I think Shanahan would take over personnel decisions which makes them better in another area they are hurting because you said it best:
Shanahan, in my eyes, would be an enormous improvement over anyone they’ve had in over a decade.
With that, who do you like for the job JPQ? Irish?
November 19th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Another reason I think Shanahan would be a good fit is his running system. If it works like it did in Denver (nothing says it would) it really translates well to a city like Buffalo where the weather is bad and they can take advantage of not being forced to throw.
/my 2 cents isn’t even worth 2 cent though. Haha GO COLTS.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
huh?
November 19th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
With that, who do you like for the job JPQ? Irish?
I really want to go the way I said, but only with a crystal ball to know it works out great. -lol
A big gun is definitely the right move from a PR standpoint. Of those 4, I would say Shanny or Holmgren. Both have done it, and Holmgren at least “gets” the Bills and the fans/area/etc, having spent so much time in Green Bay
November 19th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Does this mean the fans living in a frozen shit hole with only the prospects of winning football team to sustain them?

Abso-fucking-lutely!
/says the guy sitting by the pool in Lauderdale
November 19th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
The Shanatan only won two SBs as a head man, but he did pick up another as a coordinator with San Francisco–ask Ballz, he’ll be happy to tell you about it.
He’s one of the best game day coaches in league history, and a coldhearted gambling son of a bitch, but a great talent evaluator he is not.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
The Bills just signed the immortal Joe Klopfenstein to their team. Nothing says big-time playmaking tight end than a name like Klopfenstein, who was waived by the fricking RAMS!
November 19th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
If the record of anyone who leaves the Rams ever is any indication he’s about to kick ass.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
@sparty: Sorry, 1 was as an offensive coordinator. My mistake.
