Jeremy Shockey: LeBron Could Never Play in the NFL
1-liner, College Basketball, College Football, NBA, NFL, Video November 19th. 2009, 9:29am
Jeremy Shockey vs. LeBron James: The Saints tight end dropped a strange gauntlet on twitter last night. The uninformed Shockey must have had one too many energy drinks – James was an accomplished high school football player, is perhaps the most freakish physical specimen in NBA (sports?) history, and at 6-foot-8, 265 pounds, he’s taller, heavier, and presumably faster than any tight end in the league.

I’ve highlighted where the argument dies.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:31 am
i don’t agree with shockey very often but i do on this. michael jordan was freakish also and embarrassed himself playing baseball.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:31 am
you know you should be contracted if you even mention the words lebron james/tight end/cleveland browns.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:33 am
GSG: Thanks for doing the heavy lifting for me. That argument is fail city
November 19th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Brock Lesnar is arguably a better athletes and James, and we saw how that worked out. He’s now on his deathbed.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Had LeBron played college football I have no doubts he could have been a great NFL player, but you can’t just walk off the street and play pro football no matter how athletic you are.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:34 am
ha. “he has been allowed to keep her gold medals”
did i just hear that wrong?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:36 am
the michael jordan argument doesn’t work.
1) He was athletic … what does that have to do with swinging a bat?
2) at the positions lebron would play, his skills (speed, power, quickness) would work.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:37 am
This is dumb – of course LeBron could do it. Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez failed at basketball and excelled in their back-up plan (the NFL).
Comparing it to GOAT not being able to hit a curveball is asinine.

November 19th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Is that you Al Davis?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:38 am
One things for sure: he would draw more illegal contact and pass interference calls than any other TE in the league.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:39 am
he couldn’t hit a fastball either.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Arnold Palmer was a great golfer and he got a beverage named after him. Now he’s 80 years old.
/just as valid an argument

November 19th, 2009 at 9:40 am
o/u on how much weight lesnar has lost? 30lbs?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Could he outrun guys, push them over and stuff? Sure. Could he run routes, blocks and all that other shit? I dunno.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:40 am
antonio gates would be the 2nd best player on the cavs
November 19th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Oh my.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:41 am
The John Daly is better.

November 19th, 2009 at 9:42 am
irish, you know how this works. posts do not make it past the magical internet moderator without some asinine hyperbole.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:43 am
I don’t have the records in front of me and I haven’t contacted Elias, but I believe LeBron was whistled for a career high 4 fouls last night, and a tech. This is one of those scenarios where hundreds of thousands will claim they were there to see it in person.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:43 am
One of the highlights of this football season for me was drinking John Daly’s at 7:30am on the way up to Durham for the Ga Tech-Duke game last weekend.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:43 am
irish – what other athletes are in the 6-8, 260 mold that fly like that? you see that video of the block yesterday? guy catches small guards from behind.
his wingspan and leaping ability are off the charts.
has lebron ever run a 40?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Just as 99% of the players in the NFL
November 19th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Push, and I’m guessing he doesn’t fight again. Evah.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:45 am
I think there’s an important distinction to be made here.
Could LeBron play in the NFL now? No. His body and skills are too specialized for basketball (as they should be).
Could he have played in the NFL if that was his sport of choice instead of basketball? Probably. There’s no way to know how good he would be, but I think he has the raw athletic ability to at least make it to the league.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:45 am
I believe Dave Winfield could easily have done this. Kirk Gibson too. There are some guys who can get over. Deal with it.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:46 am
He was athletic … what does that have to do with swinging a bat?
I love when people say this… as retarded as it is.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:47 am
first and last time an amateur wrestler is referred to as an athlete
November 19th, 2009 at 9:48 am
you see that video of the block yesterday? guy catches small guards from behind
not Courtney Lee. I know you remember those two plays from last year. Im not impressed with chase down blocks
November 19th, 2009 at 9:48 am
I’d be willing to bet Shockey has a 4.9 40 time at this point. Who the hellz he calling out?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:49 am
This is almost as ruh-tarded as TBL’s bat swinging jab.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:50 am
but I believe LeBron was whistled for a career high 4 fouls last night, and a tech.
More importantly, he was whistled for a double dribble (which was directly after he traveled).

personally, i always thought Jordan hitting .200 in the minors was pretty damn good for someone who had not played the sport for over 12 years.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Didn’t Brock fail to make the vikings practice squad? Bad example.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:52 am
So, LeBron = Eric Crouch? Or maybe Josh Cribbs?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Stephen Neal thinks you should reconsider.

Hitting a round ball with a round bat is the toughest thing to do in sports.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:54 am
Worst footwork for an elite baller ever. It never ceases to amaze me. The weird thing is, he got called for it constantly in high school, so it’s not like he was allowed to get away and it reinforced bad habits or anything.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:54 am

Clown, my example is spot on..Jockey says LeBron wouldn’t make a practice squad.
/butta love
November 19th, 2009 at 9:55 am
There is more to being a football player than athletic ability. There’s a mental aspect required to deal with the physical beating you absorb on every play. There is also a requirement to not fear those inevitable beatings (see shitty alligator armed receivers).
To speculate anyone could play in the NFL based only on their athletic ability is obsurd. He’d probably kick ass at the combine though.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:56 am
I played high school basketball with a kid that went on to play in the NFL. He never played football in high school. He walked on to play football his junior year in college at a Big 10 school. Got drafted in the 6th or 7th round based purely on athletic ability, after not doing much of anything during his only 2 years of ever playing organized football, in college.
Let’s face it: football is almost exclusively about athletic ability, and has little to do with skill (except qb). Lebron would do just fine.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:57 am

November 19th, 2009 at 9:58 am
lebron didnt even play HS football all 4 years
November 19th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Ha! I agree, but that’s asking to get ridiculed by the anti-golf crowd.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:58 am
He said they could go undefeated. The rest of it was Florio just trying to start some shit that wasn’t there.

November 19th, 2009 at 10:00 am
personally, i always thought Jordan hitting .200 in the minors was pretty damn good for someone who had not played the sport for over 12 years.
eehh… If he was ever a decent hitter in competitive ball, coming back after 12 years is mainly just adjusting to the speed of the game. If you have a previously developed swing, it’s muscle memory. Hitting guys that throw high 80’s/low 90’s isn’t as hard when you’re facing them daily (assuming you’re a good ball player). Still, I don’t want to dog him, .200 for an NBA player is pretty good.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:01 am
Ryan Leaf nods.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Even the most retarded people on the planet can hit a round ball with a golf club. It is hard to hit it well and where exactly you want it to go, but to just hit it? No, that’s easy as pie.

ill…im only siding with golf because im going through withdrawl.
then again, i hit a baseball better than i can hit a golf ball…
November 19th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Also, baseball players change their stances all the time. It’s al hand eye coordination. The only people I can remember watching who have had the same stance were Pujols, Griffey, Bonds and Sheff. I think they keep the same stance because they use the movement to keep their timing.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:28 am
When did you last get out? Played on Sunday, was gorgeous weather. Played like a fat pig and shot 84.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:31 am

November 19th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Not sure how people think Lebron could not do it. Is it if he had to start next sunday or even if given a full summer to prepare?
Seriously what would a Team do if Lebron lines up wide right for a fly pattern? Say he is a 4.9, who wins the jump ball?
I also like him for FG block units.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Any shithead can hit a golf ball. Many just can’t hit it well or straight. But not just any shithead can hit a baseball thrown by a major league pitcher.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:47 am
John Kruk and Wally Backman disagree.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:50 am
any shitehad can hit a golf ball?
when was the last time you were at a driving range? a hack will swing and miss just as much as they make contact.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:54 am
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the percentages are pretty close to being equal. Hitting a golf ball properly and hitting a major league pitch. Golf is harder than you think, and I am sure baseball is more difficult than I think.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Babe Ruth was fat! Baseball is easy!!! loloollolololllo0ll0l0lllll1l1l1
November 19th, 2009 at 10:58 am
I think that’s pretty insane. A golf ball is a stationary object. A baseball is being thrown by one of the three hundred or so best people at throwing it to fuck you up in the world.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:58 am
baseball’s hard as fuck, but there IS a margin for error when you compare the surface area of a baseball bat’s sweet spot and ball to that of the sweet spot of a golf club and ball.
1* of being open or closed doesn’t really hurt a baseball’s flight, but in golf, that 1* could mean you’re 20-30 yards right or left in a hazard or trees.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:59 am
And by no means am I discounting the difficulty of being good at golf. Also, baseball players do more than hit the ball, generally.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:01 am
if we’re talking the absolute elite of both field, that it’s equal.
an amateur would hit the ball as far and accurately as tiger or phil or sergio or any of the top ballstrikers probably 1/1,000+ times. same with making solid contact off of a major league pitcher.
it’s all relative. if you have some dude playing in a baseball rec league, he’s not going out there facing josh beckett. same with golf…the 15-handicap playing his local muni isn’t playing bethpage from the tips.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:02 am
and that’s not part of the argument AT ALL, so don’t even try and bring it up.
we’re talking hitting a golf ball vs. hitting a baseball straight up.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Experiment – Guy A, who has never played baseball or golf. 100 pitches at 90mph. 100 golf balls w/ a driver. Goal is hit to the outfield or 225 drive in play. Thoughts?
November 19th, 2009 at 11:07 am
it’s not an equal situation due to today’s drivers being forgiving and the equipment the pros use being much less forgiving yet more workable.
the equivalent to a 90mph fastball in golf would be hitting a muscle-backed, forged blade iron to within a 20-foot radius circle to a hard green (at least 10 on the stimp) with a long iron (4i+).
November 19th, 2009 at 11:14 am
haha. The equivalent of hitting a 300 yard drive would be hitting a 90 mph slider out of the park to section 42 row 10 — immediately after a 98 mph brushback pitch to the dome.
/false equivalents are fun
November 19th, 2009 at 11:14 am
So, I guess I can hit a 90mph fastball consistently.
/i’m awesome
November 19th, 2009 at 11:15 am
no…hitting a 300 yard drive is easy. even 20 handicappers can do that with regularity due to today’s driver and ball technology.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:16 am
celtic…you play blades? masochist.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:21 am
F no! I forgot to add I was being completely sarcastic. cavity back like most sane men. Hitting a blade is not for the faint of heart. I’d say you have to be in the 5 or lower handicap range to do so consistently.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Yes, any shithead can hit a golf ball. It’s not hard to hit. But for some, it’s hard to hit well. Of course, not hard for me.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:24 am
i can’t hit blades for shit, but every time i try em and DO hit the sweet spot, damn, does it feel awesome.
i play a blended set and have blades in p-8. those are easy enough to get away with.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:26 am
I can’t touch blades either. I sweep the ball (rarely take a divot except for wedges), so if I played blades both of my wrists would be broken by the end of the round.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Forgive my ignorance, but what are blades?
/and don’t say golf clubs
November 19th, 2009 at 11:29 am
forged clubs with the center of gravity placed roiughly in the center of the clubface, meaning the sweet spot is extremely small. they have small heads and no peremiter weighting which makes them unforgiving, but much more workable in both directions than cavity backs.
the more weight on the perimeter of the club, the more forgiving it is.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:29 am
A blade is what you see here. As opposed to this.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I’d say you have to be in the 5 or lower handicap range to do so consistently.
ehhh… I play blades (not the hardest blades to hit) and I’m like a 12 these days. I’m a solid iron player, I just can’t putt or get off the tee worth a fuck anymore. I also drink too much when i play now.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:31 am
those nike blades were the most gorgeous clubs made in the past decade. the new VR’s perform better, but the earlier edition was SOOO much better looking.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:33 am
The club pro that I worked for in college had Hogan blades with rifle shafts. Hitting those pure? Nothing better in the world. Not hitting them pure? Wrist surgery.
@ill – If you are a 12 and play blades, getting off the tee is all mental. Dont you think?
November 19th, 2009 at 11:34 am
if you play hogan’s, you smoke unfiltered lucky strikes, drink scotch from the bottle and have no problem putting five figures on a round of golf.
those things are for the bold…you don’t fuck around with hogans.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:36 am
A blade is what you see here. As opposed to this.
why would you use a nike blade in that example? i’m disappointed.
btw lefty, you beat me to it in Ballin’. bastard.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Huh…described him to a tee. Do you know him? Ha.
Agreed, you are fucking with Captain America when someone pulls Hogan blades out of the bag. Ask for a stroke a hole and play a 2$ nassau, or just walk off the course and cry in your car.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Nice example on the cavity backs. They nice clubs.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:38 am
First decent image that came up in a google image search.
Haha.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:39 am
@ill – If you are a 12 and play blades, getting off the tee is all mental. Dont you think?
Yeah… one of my biggest problems was that I broke my driver two years ago and settled for just hitting a big 3-iron off the tee for two straight years (fuck par 5’s!). So when I replaced it last spring, I can’t remember how to swing a wood anymore.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:39 am
because nike irons are fantastic…made by the guy who did mizuno’s forgings (tom stites) and are made and assembled in the old hogan factory in fort worth.
nike golf is underrated. woods blow, but irons and wedges are very good. and their new putter line has been getting good reviews by actual players, not magazines.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Must say, I still love the drivers. I play a 4 year old GB II. I cant part with it. Def. more of a feel golfer than tech golfer. Buddy of mine buys/sells like 3/4 drivers per year

November 19th, 2009 at 11:51 am
cheaper than you would think. Was $50 for 30 minutes. If you’re a 12 and understand your swing, you won’t need more than that.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Those are good buddies to have. You can buy whatever they’re getting rid of and a pretty deep discount. I’m still using my 983K. That’s the next upgrade in my bag.

Lefty – do you play left-handed? Do you find clubs are more/less expensive?

@celtic – I’m hoping I can get a quick fix for a case of beer (that’s what the two pros charge me for a lesson). But you and I know that it’s one thing to fix it on the range, another to do it on the course (especially a driver).

Ranger Rick agrees. Nothing makes me more suicidal then piping drive after drive on the range and then blocking, pulling, topping, slicing, hooking like a fucktard on the 1st tee.

You may as well go straight to the beer girl, cause you’re mentally fucked for that round.

Sorry didn’t get to your question sooner tbl – Ethan Kilmer. Drafted by the Bengals. Bounced around the league for a few injury plagued seasons, and is no longer on an NFL roster to my knowledge. Mostly a special teams player for the Bengals but actually scored a defensive td a year or two ago
