Five Years Ago Today: A Beer-Throwing Lout Ignited the Pacers-Pistons Brawl in Auburn Hills
Fighting, NBA, Video November 19th. 2009, 1:10pmWe’ll start with an unpopular opinion: Ron Artest isn’t to blame for the Malice at the Palace.
* As Bill Waton on the replay, it wasn’t that hard of a foul on Ben Wallace. Clearly, Wallace overreacted.
* Was Artest foolish to lie down on the scorer’s table? Yes. Would he have had a beer thrown at him if he were sitting in a chair or just standing up? Perhaps. But the overall point is that he had distanced himself from the initial altercation.
* We still believe that if that idiot fan doesn’t throw the beer, the rumble never happens.
* And before you counter with, “Artest needs to control his emotion there…” think back to your last athletic endeavor, and then toss in a near-fight … and then think what you might have done if some asshole hurled a beer at you. Was Artest wrong to go in the stands? Of course. But in the heat-of-the-moment, the guess here is that many more athletes/humans might have done the same thing.
* Stephen Jackson is, and always has been, a hot-headed jackass.
* Jermaine O’Neal threw the best punch in the arena that night.
* Best line of the night? Bill Walton’s, “This is a disgrace.”
The Brawl: Were lessons learned? [ESPN]
* Sorry the video is such poor quality, but it seems as if the NBA has scrubbed most of them off YouTube.

The fan was just on TV talking like “hey come on folks let’s be good at these events, so we can still enjoy them”…Pretty sure the vast majority of even drunks at these events have that under control.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Where were you?
freshman dorm, those were the days.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Stephen Jackson is effing crazy.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Agreed, TBL
Maybe some of the NBAphiles can answer – how far would the Pacers have gone that year had this not happened?
November 19th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I love this video. The fan’s reaction when Artest is charging towards him is priceless. Makes me laugh every time.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
I was in a bar drinking Guinness rather rapidly.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
To this day I question why Artest was even in the game. Pacers up 16 with 45 seconds left, he should have been on the bench.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
You know what? Fuck Ben Wallace.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
The worst part is that he got the wrong guy. I probably would’ve had the same reaction. Watching this craziness going on, and then realize that 6-7, 260-pound giant was rushing towards you.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
As was I. Mmmmm, my goodness, my Guinness.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
I remember being on the phone with my friend when in mid-sentence he says “HOLY SHIT TURN ON ESPN”
November 19th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Sadly, I was at home on a Friday night watching tv. I was flipping between channels when I stumbled upon the game. I missed Artest going up into the stands by about 30 seconds.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Walton was the best
November 19th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
i was in fallujah during phantom fury.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
I remember watching this from my parkland townhouse…then going to the Canes vs Wake Forest the next day and patphish went with me and had no idea that this brawl took place.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
My favorite quote:
“Stephen Jackson and Rasheed Wallace trying to be peacemakers…”
November 19th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
how the fuck can you drink guiness rapidly? i would throw up from drinking (eating, amirite?) that meal so fast
November 19th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Jermaine O’Neal dropping that one guy with a hook was the best.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Stay classy, Pistons fans.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
We’ll start with an unpopular opinion:
Without seeing the by-line, I thought this was a Duffy article at first just based on this.
Where were you?
I was at a crowded bar playing darts when the game came on Sportscenter and the whole place exploded with everyone in the bar saying “oh shit!” at the same time.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
how the fuck can you drink guiness rapidly? i would throw up from drinking (eating, amirite?) that meal so fast
Try an irish car bomb. It’s a hot of Jameson and Bailey’s dropped into 3/4 of a pint of Guinness. Drink it really fast and it tastes like chocolate and coffee ice cream…with whisky in it.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
my brother did a couple of these at my other brother’s wedding. he was fucked up.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
check, check, still nothing. People who settle problems through violence are too stupid to realize there are thousands of different actions that could diffuse a problem, other than violence.

my brother did a couple of these at my other brother’s wedding. he was fucked up.
3 is my limit. After that my stomach starts feeling so full I can’t help but throw up, no matter how much I’ve already had to drink.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Yeah thats what made it funny. You know that guy shat a brick when he saw Artest charging him for no reason.
So many great parts of that fight.
-tinsley waving around a dustpan and broom
- “Ron Artest has a look in his eye that is very scary”
- Greg Anthony commenting on this after he did this
-Austin Croshere being the only white guy on the floor
- John Saunders calling Detroit fans “sissies”
November 19th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
House party. Everyone stopped and watched for like a half an hour.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
My friends and I finish car bombs with a ric flair-esque WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
November 19th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
scot pollard was there in street clothes.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
I actually met the guy that threw the beer before this happened. He was the husband of one of my buddy’s wife’s high school friends. Complete douche. Didn’t surprise me at all when I heard he was the one that threw the beer.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I man.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I always am amused by this statement, generally it’s from a vag. And they don’t realize the broad scope of the statement. How do you think we are here today with out freedoms in this country? What’s that you say? Violence. Ok, thanks.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Sorry, I guess I should have said: I met the “beer-throwing lout.”
November 19th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
What ended up happening to him? Any jail?
November 19th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Bulldog, meet Maggs. Maggs, meet Bulldog. You too apparently disagree.
/stoking a fire.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Unlike French futbollers I will admit to being guilty. Somebody throws beer on me, I’m probably going to be too stupid to mentally scroll through that list of 1000 other things I could do.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
LOL
November 19th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
its just a natural reaction to want to kick someones ass when they toss a beer on you
November 19th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Who’s the angriest commenter here? Whoever that is, needs this.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
If you throw a beer on another guy, do you not expect to get your ass kicked?
Artest is the man.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
That was a great day, we got to hang by the Hurricane cheerleaders before the game and some dood tried to sell us a big bud of chronic as we sat at a light on the exit ramp in Miami. I miss the Orange “Bowl”.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I think Ron Artest tracked him down and they became friends. Unless this is fake.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
and this is where fathers can take their sons to watch Marlins baseball!!!!
November 19th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
It only holds two shots, let me know when the laptop version comes out.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
SHIT. I already gave them my credit card number.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Hernia owes me 24.95.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
@Bulldog53
I would expect nothing less from nearly all of the commentors here. You fit in, congrats.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Speaking of fights, did anyone see that guy get his ass kicked on the Ruins last night? He got his eye messed up something fierce.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Brad has a name, sir.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
and this is where fathers can take their sons to watch Marlins baseball!!!!
Unless I’m missing something, I think he was referring to the original Orange Bowl, where only the Hurricanes played. Miami only moved into Landshark Stadium with the Marlins this year (or was it last year).
/might be missing a joke.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
It was Friday night.
O’Neil layed out a fat Pistons fan who waddled on floor right?
Did I see Ed Dougnahy in there as a ref?
The guy in the Wallace warm up jacket through the beer right?
November 19th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
think back to your last athletic endeavor, and then toss in a near-fight … and then think what you might have done if some asshole hurled a beer at you.
Athletic Endeavor? Dude was doing the opposite of being athletic in that he was laying down on the scoring table acting like a fucking jackass.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Brad’s eye was disgusting last night. So weird, of all the guys left he was the last one I would have suspected of going on a drunk roid rampage. Sad.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Wait, so did I sign petitions for women’s suffrage, fight in the Revolutionary War so our rich would pay less taxes, non-violently demonstrate for civil rights, fight Hitler so others could be free, pay to see Milk, or support policies leaving our military currently in two protracted wars in the Middle East?
November 19th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Marlins new park is being built at the old orange bowl site.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
yeah, and he looked like he was there with one of his cousins. the detroit folks catch my drift.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
I’m trying to keep up with the conversation here, but somebody help an old guy out.
WTF is Ruins?
November 19th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
I always am amused by this statement, generally it’s from a vag. And they don’t realize the broad scope of the statement. How do you think we are here today with out freedoms in this country? What’s that you say? Violence. Ok, thanks.
@Bulldog, Wow. Amazing analysis. Do you do speaking engagements?
November 19th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Was thinking the same thing, quite a shocker. And so close to the final challenge, just dumb, but booze will do that to you. His eye looked horrible. I’d wear an eye patch.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I remember watching this from my parkland townhouse…then going to the Canes vs Wake Forest the next day and patphish went with me and had no idea that this brawl took place.
thanks for the invite, sparty!-lol
Not something I thought about having a 5th anniversary party for. Care as much about it now as I did then
November 19th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
maggs is only pissed because it shows michigan in a bad light. surprised it took someone this long to point that out.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Ignorance is bliss Cabbage. Never trade down to a newer model if you have an old lady, because these young one’s watch a fuck load of shitty VH1/MTV reality.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Marlins new park is being built at the old orange bowl site.
So I was missing something. Is this the same stadium deal where they have to rename themselves the Miami Marlins? They’ve had so many deals get set up and then fall through over the years I’ve lost track.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
No, I don’t have the thought process. I just throw a left a right and a body kick.
Violence solves everything.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Ruins = MTV, just a challenge to win money between all the Road Rules and Real World people. Some funny stuff, but it is wearing thin.
I don’t watch much TV besides sports, but for some reason this shit has my attention.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
i don’t think changing the name is a requirement.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Thanks TST. I’m so old I remember when VH1 and MTV played music. Now I’ve got to go to Paladia (I think that’s what it’s called).
November 19th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Anyone looking forward to Jersey Shore? fist pumping
November 19th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
@Texans
‘Merica!
November 19th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Just saw the preview for the first time last night. That might actually be appointment viewing. It can’t be half as awesome as the preview makes it look though.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
So I was missing something. Is this the same stadium deal where they have to rename themselves the Miami Marlins? They’ve had so many deals get set up and then fall through over the years I’ve lost track.
yep, and you should see the local news with all the problems. First, they dumped contaminated sludge & shit from the site into a river right by the stadium, contaminating the water supply, now they have tons of picketers because they promised a certain % of local jobs for the construction and they are nowhere close.
@sparty: yeah, it HAS to be Miami Marlins
The best is they also showed the webpage of the Miami-Dade County Commissioners website, and there was one picture, because all the rest of them have been arrested/jailed/thrown out of office for dirty tricks, so they can do no business until they replace the other four positions.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I swear I spend half my day googling shit, trying to figure out WTF you guys are talking about.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Yes, Jager Bomb!
November 19th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
jpq-a complete and total mess. still think they should have taken the deal Don King was offering.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Damn jpq, you scared me. I scrolled down to the bottom a saw brand new kinda long post and thought someone else was in the room.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
All that violence gave us some great freedoms.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
It can’t be half as awesome as the preview makes it look though
reminded me of that new haircut video
November 19th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Whatever, I want Paolo back right now just to hear his thoughts on Jersey Shore.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Wow, I knew the stadium issue had been a mess down there for years, but I didn’t know it had become that much of a clusterfuck. Kinda makes me feel better about the Astros having to rename their new stadium a year after it opened because the sponsor, and energy provider, went bankrupt in one of the most colossal collapses–to that point–of a corporation in American history.
Thank you Florida for improving my self esteem.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
TST, just when I was beginning to like you, you got to go say something like that.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
ya i definatelty see the similarities between the revoluntianry war and a guy charging the stands after he got a beer thrown at him
November 19th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I’m always going to fail you Cabbage.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
sorry cabbage. haven’t been around since like 8:30 and jumped in w/ a vengeance-lol
sparty: they should move the team and give the $500 million to fund the schools and city services. This is THE biggest clusterfuck I have ever seen in my life. I feel bad for the people of Miami, who are going to keep being uneducated and murdered, but have a great stadium in Little Havana that no one will go to.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

This is the point where Mike NYC comes in and reminds everyone that Miami has a Democratic Mayor and that most cities in the country that are a clusterfuck are controlled by Democrats.
There Mike, I did your work for you.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
i can at least partly agree that blount wasnt fully to blame for punching that kid but artest lost his fucking mind
November 19th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
taguchi, my gf is 23 (i’m 32) and she loves this shit. well said.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
King was offering them prime real estate in Palm Beach County. I remember correctly, they would have been right on the inter-coastal.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Public funds for stadiums are almost always a bad idea. JC Bradbury website sabernomics has an insane amount of detail into how much of an illusion the economic impact of a team is and further, how many of these deals aren’t only bad on the face of them but continue to cost money long term. The public ignores this shit though because (rightly) nobody wants to lose their team.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
This is an extremely ignorant statement, considering the philosophical and diplomatic foundation that was laid by the USA forefathers for years before a single shot was fired. Stop posting on a blog and go investigate American history, or spend a few hours perusing wikipedia (start with John Locke) to understand the concept of the American Revolution. Here’s a tip – it didn’t start with an act of violence, and going to war was not the original goal.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Sorry, you can’t argue with HGH and an Affliction shirt. It’s just not happening.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Everyone is missing the best part of this brawl…
A) The league overreacted. The fans were going apeshit, what were the players supposed to do?
B) Oneal’s punch was money.
c) Most people didn’t catch Jamal Tinsley going into the tunnel and coming back out with a dustpan and swinging it at the crowd… F-ing awesome
November 19th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Had not considered this. My bad.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
What I remember the most from that fight? David Stern sold out his players for PR.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
What I remember the most from that fight? David Stern sold out his players for PR.
you’re right. We got some pretty fly threads out of that
November 19th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
I was at texmex @psu. those were the days
November 19th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Fuck! I can’t believe I missed this thread.
All I remember about this fight is David Stern’s serious face during the press conference. He was trying his best to look angry in every statement he made.
Also, this type of shit has happened in hockey before to much, much less fanfare then what happened here. I don’t blame Artest much, the fan is a fucking idiot.
Stephen Jackson on the other hand is pretty much insane. He’s the type of guy that, had I been physically strong enough to do so, would beat the shit out of.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
I remember watching that fight in amazement for about 5 minutes until I realized that I had Artest AND S. Jackson on my fantasy team that year. And I nearly pissed myself when Tinsley came out of the tunnel with the dustpan.
