Starting the Weekend Right: Syracuse vs. UNC
College Basketball November 20th. 2009, 6:00pm
Syracuse had the look of a Final 4-caliber team last night in destroying California 95-73 last at Madison Square Garden. Cal is supposed to be the best team in the Pac-10. Tonight, the Orange face a much more difficult test – defending champ UNC.
Other than poor free throw shooting, we can’t find a discernible weakness on the ‘Cuse. While Ohio State didn’t have the size to handle UNC’s pro-like frontline (few, if any, teams will), Syracuse has a long 2-3 zone that should be effective. The key tonight: Will North Carolina have enough outside shooting to win? We’ll take Syracuse in an upset.
CRM, Hernia and I will be on duty this weekend; Duffy will be filing dispatches from Seattle. Is anyone working at all next week?

New job, so I’ll be working until 5pm on Wednesday (if I’m lucky)
November 20th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
2 starters out or not, Cal can’t be this shitty.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
cursed, if you’re in the house can you get me Jon Diebler’s autograph?
November 20th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
I dunno. This is the second game in a row they’ve gotten run. They’re just too damn weak on the interior, and they don’t get to the line.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Back to the comments page after two nights in the hospital. A few notes:
College Basketball is MUCH worse than the NBA. Watching the ‘cuse and Cal blow dunks. Terrible defense followed by worst offense during the Ole Miss/Indiana game. UNC inability to make a free throw, yet still beat Ohio state. It’s just terrible in November. Maybe it gets a little better in March.
Getting rest in a hospital is unpossible. Room was next to someone “WOOOOOOOPPPP” all night. Even when he finally went to sleep, nurses check you blood pressure every 2 hours.
Lebron > Kobe. Dude is talented. Damn near unstoppable.
Miami not kicking a field goal was just as bad a call as Belicheat’s.
Cleveland vs. Detroit will set the NFL back 50 years.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Cal’s newfound strategy of “scoring points” is an interesting one. Wonder if they’ll stick with it.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
If Cal isn’t going to ever get to the FT line then they are one and done in the NCAA tourney. I mean this is a joke. 4 fts today and only 12 yesterday and 7 of those in the last 10 minutes when the game was decided.
Rautins is iffy tonight with a sprained ankle. Syracuse has had trouble rebounding and it doesn’t get easier tonight. SU will pack it in. Let’s see if Carolina can make any jump shots. I think Carolina hangs on because Syacuse won’t get those gimme layups Cal gave up last night.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
FT shooting is the most overrated factor of winning.
/leaves so I don’t have to look up the math to defend my point
November 20th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
Bobby Knight is a great analyst. No frills, but GREAT insight. I’ll take him over Dookie V all day…
November 20th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Was hoping tonight would be an early night outta work since I was here until 6am yesterday? Nope. The raping of me by my job continues. Fuck.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Teams that shoot the most free throws in a game won 59% of the time
College teams who shoot over 75% from the line wins 63% of the time
percent of what I typed was true: 0.0%
November 20th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
some team right down the road does.
Fetch: FT is one of the Four Factors.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Fuck Duke.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Seconded.
Also, it’s 7:03 and Michigan still SUCKS!
November 20th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
is this line for UNC/Cuse really that low? UNC-1?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I would take Syracuse +1 in a heartbeat…
November 20th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Wally, why?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Congrats on the new gig, Cap Pants.
longgggg day. just crushed indian food for the 2nd time this week.
i’ve got the cuse winning, 69-65.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Is Duffy going to the MLS cup?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
UNC’s guards are pretty young and really pedestrian, at least right now… I thought after watching last night that OSU was the better team, but just didn’t hit shots to exploit Carolina’s perimeter.
Syracuse has enough inside to prevent some of the easy stuff that OSU gave up last night. And their perimeter guys are every bit as good as OSU…
/better get Carolina early, because they will get better and better as their guards get more experienced…
November 20th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Butter chicken and naan?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Speaking of Duke…I can’t believe what a nice pick-up Dahntay Jones has been for the Pacers so far. I was pretty skeptical, but he has been superb so far.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
burping up curry yet?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Syracuse getting a lot of love to win this game. You know what that means.
Over/Under is 161 if anyone is interested.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
The early returns on the VS Fashion Show are staggering. If they played that show online midday, it would melt the internet.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
link to pics or video?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
can someone tell me when the game tips?
November 20th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Just did. SU up 8-0.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I know, but it’s the least important one by a significant margin.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
UNC’s size is going to keep Carolina in every game this year even if they can’t hit open shots.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
/aka the “Memphis didn’t lose the title game, Kansas won it” corollary
November 20th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I don’t think they’ll be a more exciting 10 minutes in college basketball than what we just saw and it’s November.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
clown: I mean getting to the line, not making them when you get there, that’s my bad.
November 20th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Here’s a photo round-up from Google News. The Marissa Miller photo may have blown my mind.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I’ve said this before but Dan Shulman is awesome on play-by-play. Doesn’t matter if he’s doing baseball or basketball, the guy is just good and never overshadows the game.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
agreed GG. I like him and McDonough the best I think.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
I took UNC to win straight up.
/’Cuse wins then
November 20th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Beadle/Fetch – I’m trying to educate myself on college hockey. Just noticed that Jonathan Toews’ little brother is on ND. Is he any good?
November 20th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Just had to fire a guy for the second time this week. Dammit, it’s so depressing.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
still catching up on TIVO, syracuse looks like it got gassed by the 6 min mark, offense starting to bog down …
November 20th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Just had to fire a guy for the second time this week. Dammit, it’s so depressing.
I think you might be doing it wrong
November 20th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Just had to fire a guy for the second time this week. Dammit, it’s so depressing.
You shouldn’t have re-hired him. He didn’t learn from his mistakes, huh?
November 20th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Fetch- their testing your theory out tonight. Carolina has 14 fts attempted, Cuse only 4. Carolina up 2 at the half.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
*they’re
November 20th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Cuse = frauds
November 20th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Well rs, it’s not an ironclad rule that happens 100% of the time. Carolina is also out offensive rebounding Syracuse, and have turned it over less.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Damn that Tom Cable
November 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Oh, sorry GG didn’t see your comment. Toews is ok. Nothing special but a solid player.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Yeah I know. Just thought it was funny that there’s a one sided FT advantage in this game. Carolina is up because they’re dominating the glass. Pretty obvious.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
dimestore thoughts:
Wes Johnson needs help offensively.
SU can’t give up 10 more off rebs in 2nd half.
SU packs in the defense and forces UNC to make shots from outside the paint, it’ll win!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
Figured as much. I don’t recall him ever being invited to any of the WJC camps. I was talking to some Oilers fans who thing Vande Velde is a pretty good pro prospect.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
spartans by 13.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
*think
November 20th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Thats what they did that half and Ed Davis had a field day on the offensive glass. If Onuaku wasn’t so damn lazy boxing people out SU would be up 6-8 right now.
UNC’s length is shutting off the SU drives in the paint which is making them a jump shooting and transition squad. Johnson needs to drive to the basket and get to the line, he’s the only guy with size that can do it in this one.
If Triche had one more year under his belt he would be dynamite for this type of game. He’s still a little gun shy.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Yeah GG Vande Velde is a really good two way guy, he should be a pretty solid pro.
Is the Canadian WJC team going to be as stacked as usual?
November 20th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
good start to the 2nd half.
and on the defensive end, too.
let UNC jack 3’s.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
I didn’t rehire him, I had to fire two different people this week, that’s what I meant. And had to fire a guy last week.
I just feel like such a douchebag, but I’m usually left with no choice.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
any of you hockey guys follow the USHL?
November 20th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Semi. There’s a team an hour away from here. I don’t really follow what teams are good and what not, but I have a general idea of the players and where they’re going to college.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Cuse by the 7!!!!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
If dudes can’t figure out how valuable a job is in this economy, then there is no reason to feel like a douche about relieving them of their duties if they don’t do the job…
November 20th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
That’s what I keep telling myself.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
It should be strong but maybe not as good as last year. Taylor Hall is awesome and I think he’ll light it up. Tyler Seguin is another guy who will probably draw a lot of attention.
I like the U.S. teams chances to contend this year. Cam Fowler is one of my favourite players in the OHL this year and he will be an excellent qb for their powerplay.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
I actually enjoyed firing people. I had the routine down pat. Always ended with the same line: “At this point, I think it’s best for both parties if we go ahead and sever the relationship.” Of course there was a modification or two, depending on circumstances.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Really? After last year’s tournament I thought we were going to be terrible this year. Then again I don’t really know anything about any of the CHL kids, only the college ones. They need better goaltending than they had last year, that’s for sure. Hopefully one of the kids at Miami is eligible.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
triche to the tin!
up 11! and one
November 20th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Pacers/Cavs has been highly entertaining.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Triche is nice. Kid just needs some seasoning next summer and he’s going to be dynamite.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
they just put a team about 10 minutes from my home. i’m really starting to get into it. i never was the biggest hockey guy but it seems like that league has some pretty good competition.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
cuse up 14!!!!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
wes johnson for 3!
SU up 17!!!!!!!!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I don’t want to repeat myself, but then again I’m not clever enough to come up with all original thoughts, so I’ll just say it: Good thing Wesley Johnson transferred or Iowa State would be tough this year.
Although, there’s only one ball, so maybe not.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
This is a defensive clinic by the Orange. Carolina has gotten one good look this half and missed a layup.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
See, another factor in it is that I’m in North Philly, and first of all, most of these guys are struggling to begin with, then it’s not out of the question for the to either kick my ass or kill me. So all in all, not a fun experience.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
where’s mrejr?
he seems all down on TBL lately.
why?
We’re coming off one of our best weeks of the year, which means one of the best weeks in the site’s history. september was the site’s best month ever. october was 2nd best.
if everything’s seemingly going so right … what’s wrong?
/let’s open the floor to gripes… airing of grievances …
November 20th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Jesus, was that an airball?
November 20th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
22-1 run!
UNC’s offense looks awful against a zone
November 20th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
kris joseph is hitting 3’s?
wow.
up 20.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
no complaints here TBL, you manage to get me to do less and less at work each day..congrats!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Alright TBL, I’ve got one, the Jets suck, and the Yankees can all go get venereal diseases. That’s really all I’ve got.
More Orioles and Ravens posts? Probably a reach.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Cuse isn’t a fraud anymore! Movie’s back on!
November 20th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Whatever, Syracuse still lost to a DII team. Don’t care if it was an exhibition or not.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
TBL: my only complaint would be with the gossipy stuff. I understand it gets pageviews so I can live with it if it helps keep the site alive. Not a fan of the Notre Dame repetitiveness either, but again I understand it.
I also don’t like how some commenters would always come in and take a big shit in every thread, although you’ve done a good job to clean that up.
All in all there are a couple things I’m not fond of, but they’re pretty minor, and when I said on twitter I come for the commenters I don’t mean that to diss you, I mean that 99% of the guys who comment here are awesome, hilarious or both.
/fin
November 20th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
Joseph is making the leap this year that a lot of SU guys make during their sophomore year. Warrick, Shumpert, Jackson, Onuaku, Flynn, Rautins all got ridiculously better sophomore year That SU coaching staff is the most underrated in the country outside of Boeheim.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
@Fetch
Sorry, I posted that link and took off last night, but fwiw the only thing McCarthy lacks as a head coach is discipline for his players. I think he’s head and shoulders above Childress because he
A. plans a good game
B. usually doesn’t fuck up the clock
C. is usually pretty spot on with his challenges (though there have been some head scratchers this year)
You put McCarthy on the Vikings and they make the Super Bowl no questions asked.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Beadle – Sorry, i find the gossipy stuff interesting. Been doing it since the outset. Whether it is high-profile media members or athletes, it’s not going anywhere. suggestion – don’t like those, skip it. we’re 1/3 media, 1/3 sports, 1/3 off the field/gossip/extracurricular/etc.
I hear you on ND. i will admit when everyone is tweaked, sometimes … i feel like forcing the issue. ha. how bad of me.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Syracuse cannot miss. They’re NBA Jam on fire.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
I’d like a line added on the right under Research & Development, with the word Commenters, and then under it ThatsSoTaguchi and no one else. Maybe the 412. Because we add so much.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
well my main complaint is posts that seem like they are piggy backing on deadspin. if i wanted to read deadspin i would go there. and fucking with people who work for espn but arent on air seems kinda scummy. and the suzy kolber might have had a baby with a married man post was scummy(at least imo). other than that i like everything even that you willingly tell us that shitty shows you watch.
/later folks it has been nice
November 20th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
This site needs more fake alum threads. And asking people to meet for a fisticuffs.
/Paolo’d.
Oh and more Clown, except for yesterday when he slandered me.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
you’re right Badger. But, Childress has gotten a lot better at those things this year. I killed him the past couple years, so it’s only fair to give him credit.
But yea McCarthy probably is a better coach when it’s all said and done. THere are plenty worse out there than Childress though. He and Seifert have gotten a lot better at drafting too.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
This game will get close.
/SU fan.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
fuck ND, the yankees, the jets and the knicks.
lebron stays, the browns suck and the cavs wons win it.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
i don’t know if UNC is built to come back in a game like this..
November 20th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
here comes the UNC run. you knew they weren’t going to lose by 20.
why are these ware kids in when UNC has Davis, Zweller, and Thompson?
November 20th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Is this the beginning of Festivus? Is this the airing of grievances?
No complaints from me. TBL, while I might disagree with your stances on a couple of things *cough* Notre Dame *cough*, the content’s always solid. And the comment section is always entertaining.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
I definitely get you there. Like I said, I’m assuming those posts get pageviews from people who wouldn’t necessarily visit the site, and whatever you need to do to keep this place running is fine by me, short of bringing paolo back.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
also, while everyone is here: Is Modern Warfare worth 60 bucks?
November 20th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Syracuse will let them back in with questionable decision making. Not to mention FT shooting. This is the perfect game for UNC to come back.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Billy Buckner is ON FIRE. Well played.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
@TBL
you’re obviously doing something right if you are having your best month ever or whatever..what makes you think so many people are down on this site?
November 20th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
He and Seifert have gotten a lot better at drafting too.
yessir. What I would give to find a solid tackle in next year’s draft.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Shooter is on TNT for anyone interested.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
elaborate. deadspin and TBL have been, to an extent, similar for 3 years now.
the ‘not on air’ part … i never posted on them back when the stories emerged. BUT since i had the chance to ‘break’ that the guy was fired, i felt like that was necessary. and he was on that ‘list’ … which kinda sorta justifies it being worth a post. that’s very inside baseball…but those people read this site too (just dont comment).
suzy? well, she’s on air. and her baby was in the paper. she’s pretty big-time, IMO. was the post unfair? maybe. well at 15 posts a day, occasionally, something wont be fair/right/nice/etc
November 20th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
You probably shouldn’t passively advocate the shooting of any person or group anymore, if nothing else just so you don’t have to take shit for it for a hundred plus comments.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
was specifically for mrejr, and if anyone else feels that way, they’re free to lemme know. usually, i prefer email – heck, duffy/crm/hernia have let me know their feelings in the past (i think).
as evidenced in the KKK post earlier today, i often said silly, irresponsible stuff. good to keep me in check … as long as you dont do it the way ‘jay the most hated’ used to.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
I know more about the OHL players. There are some good d-men in the OHL from the U.S. and Phil McRae is a pretty good player. I might be overestimating some of the NCAA guys. I always have a hard time evaluating them accurately.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Fetch – Hell yea it’s worth it. Especally if you plan to play online.
TBL – I just get tired of the soccer, Michigan and ND posts. I get why you do them but I feel like the dead horse has been beat. Michigan stinks, as does ND. the only story for ND will be when Weis gets fired.
As for the ESPN stories, I think it’s only news (barely) when the person involved with the “scandal” is a public figure. If it’s some pencil pusher who works in Promotions I couldn’t care less.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
I just picked it up today after work. I’ll let you know.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Buckner: I just feel like such a douchebag, but I’m usually left with no choice.
Sorry man I was just joking on the other “re-hire” comment. I work at a large Fortune 500 site in operations and was the heavy on compiling crap on lots of people who were ready to be terminated for under-performance. I have a million stories. The common thread is there are a lot of people in this world who cannot make the decision on their own to find a job that is better for them. It’s like the guy who wants to commit suicide, but can’t – so he points a gun at a cop. These people are unhappy and sadly, takes them getting canned b/c they lack the confidence or resolve to do it. I’ve seen many of these people years later and they harbor no ill will. Some do though.
Unless you’re canning some model employee who took a 19-minute break for the first time, instead of 15 minutes, or something shady like that, sleep with a sound conscience. You cannot let these other people’s bullshit into your life. If you have issues, let me know. I’ve had to whack people whom I know are single parents and with kids. It’s this fun little thing called Life.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
it’s your world im just a squirrel who leaves a good comment every 100th comment.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
how smooth is wesley johnson? geez.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
that is a comment i can relate to.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Oh yeah, more hockey posts.
/shows self out.
GG: Off the top of my head I can’t even think of any elite college guys who will be at the WJC. Ness and Schroeder from Minnesota I guess, Chris Brown (no, not that Chris Brown) from Michigan, Sheahan from Notre Dame. But none of those guys other than Schroeder really knocks my socks off. The best college guy is probably Patrick Wiercioch from Denver, but he’s going to be playing for Canada.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
I like what TBL does compared to Deadspin. Deadspin with their “Worst coach ever”, “worst sportswriter ever” crap is ridiculous and uncalled for. It’s not even funny and they’re calling people out for no reason and doing anonymously.
Not to mention AJ scrapping the barrel with his ESPN drudge. I hate Deadspin and if this site became that I would leave. I think people like Paolo make the commenting section (which is eleventy billin times better than Deadspin) unbearable and embarrassing for this site.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Mean Girls is on TBS. It’s a great movie to watch on mute.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
@TBL
will you continue Friday with Artie’s posts next year? you seem to get a fair share of beatings for those..
/serious question
November 20th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
Now THERE’S a blast from the past. He goes back to the hollowed out picture logo, doesn’t he?
November 20th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Oh yeah, one more request: tons of Olympics posts when the time comes
/realizes I’m the only person here who likes the olympics
November 20th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
I think that Paolo is entirely bearable. He’s pretty easy to ignore if you just start doing it (as is everyone here, if you don’t like a soccer post or a comment you can just as easily ignore it). That said, I can see why TBL wouldn’t want his insane rants in the comments section as a reflection on him.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
I think Hernia should do a weekly prowrestling column.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
The commenting section of Deadspin is an abortion. 400 fart jokes
November 20th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Soccer – worldwide sport = worldwide interest. Plus, I LOVE the world cup and it is next summer. will be doing a ton on it.
yes, once the Weis search is over, and then Clausen/nfl draft, there wont be much ‘but that school. I did pick Harangody to win the POY, though …
November 20th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
I really think that you should do daily World Cup stuff next year… Interest in page views could really soar and some of the current regulars enjoy the footy banter…
November 20th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
TST- I agree. I never respond to him ever, but I hate how he clogs everything up and everyone responds to him making the comment section out of control. It makes this place less enjoyable.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
Says the guy that once engaged in a 3 on 1 battle royal against Paolo.
/me and GSG are just as guilty

I hear ya scripty. You make very good points all around. Just end up feeling bad for these guys on occasion, for the points you mentioned, but all in all, it does come down to a matter of whether or not they want to be employed or not. If they don’t care enough, I probably shouldn’t care that much when I gotta cut them loose, either. The advice is much appreciated, though.
And wasn’t NBA Jam the best game ever? Maybe GoldenEye was better, that may be it. Still could play that shit for days.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
It’s fun to try and ignore Paolo when he leaves a fucking “Mission Earth” post every 3 comments and then bashed both my current state and beliefs, meanwhile threatens bodily harm if you dare disagree with his views.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Can’t wait for the World Cup.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
It depends. Sometimes I’m in a mood to argue with Paolo. Sometimes I’m in a mood to watch others argue with Paolo. And sometimes I wish he’d shut up. But every place of business/school/dorm/commenting section needs someone to unite in hatred around, someone to bitch about, and that’s Paolo. If he was permanently banned we’d just decide we all hated somebody else (and I feel like my enemies list is huge). So he serves a useful function.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Feeling really good about my call on Syracuse right now.
And really frustrated that Ohio State didn’t shoot the ball better yesterday. Of course, they would have gotten beat up by ‘Cuse tonight as well.
Syracuse is the best team I’ve seen so far.
/It’s early
//Best means the most ready to play team, which will likely change by mid-December
November 20th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
This is the truth. I’ve encountered Rachel McAdams twice on public transit in Toronto. She is fucking gorgeous even without movie star make-up and lighting.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Holy shit the Cavs came back. Anderson Varajeo is a +13 tonight, way above everybody else in the game. He might not score alot but his +/- has rocked since forever. Love him.
Let’s say the Raptors would be looking at a low playoff seed or miss the playoffs (either is likely). Would the Raptors entertain a trade of Hickson, a contract and a pick for Bosh, rather than lose Bosh for nothing? Then the Cavs could own the Bird-rights to LBJ and Bosh. I am not certain on the cap holds for those contracts, but I think they could squirm a third stud under their cap and make the Dream Team idea feasible.
To me, it sounds like whomever gets Bosh, gets the other marquee free agent in hopes of making a Big Three. The Cavs, Heat and Hawks all sound like their are going to ride it out with LBJ, Wade & Johnson.

November 20th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Paolo just got on my nerves with the very anti-gay thing, that irritated me. Otherwise, he’s pretty damn entertaining. It’s like if a car wreck was funny.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Ocarina of Time.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Yea, that was fun haha.
TBL – I understand the soccer stance, I just hate soccer. Although I will watch the World Cup.

So when he’s calling people faggots it’s useful? I’m sorry, I understand it’s only the Internet but its offensive the way he talks. If he wanted to say his views without offending groups of people, I’m fine, reasonable people can disagree, but he’s way over the top and it makes me not want to even read this site or click on the comments.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
What the fuck is that?
November 20th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
I like when I go out on a saturday night, come home and look at the comments and see like 8 consecutive Paolo posts.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I have logged way too many hours playing that game. I like all the other Zelda games (although I’ve never played Windwaker or whatever the newest one is called) but didn’t play them a ton, just beat them once and that was it. Ocarina of Time though is just phenomenal
November 20th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Paolo does not serve any useful function; every now and then, he’s moderately funny, but for the most part, he’s an annoying douchebag who drives people away from the site.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I rarely drop by on weekends. A few days ago I saw it was a Paolo day at 9 am so I just took the day off from the site.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Does anybody have the old codes for NBA Jam? There were some when punching in your name (so the arcade game would remember you) you could put in initials and DOB, and you’d be one of the guys who made the game, a 5′, squat, white guy in a wife-beater t-shirt and a derby hat, and you had fire 90% of the time and unlimited range on your 3-pointers. There is an NBA Jam at this one bar by me and I would kill for the old info.

Hickson sucks.
Toronto is not trading Bosh for that kind of package. If anything, they ride it out and do a sign & trade in the off-season and get back a legitimate player or two for him.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Exactly. It’s even funnier drunk.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
fetch, Windwaker wasn’t very good. Better than the average game, but as Zeldas go, it was substandard. You spend half the time sailing around on a boat not doing anything.

November 20th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Fail. Now that he is in the starting lineup, he is averaging 15+ per game and shooting over 65%. And he’s 20. Dude can flat out score from inside and outside and has great hops.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
I’m sick of meth jokes. That’s my only complaint. Oh, and stories that end when one person poops on another.
And if there’s a way we can get more Caster Semenya stories, I’m for that.
As for the content, by now you know you’re going to get the non-sports silliness, but I like it.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
All i remember from NBA Jam is:
The Bill Clinton heads
No Jordan (Horace Grant, Pippen instead)
Shatter the glass in the 4th on a dunk, and you can still somehow bank in a shot
Hitting ridiculous threes from all over while on fire
Double alley oop dunks
No one could beat me with the Knicks
November 20th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
I can’t make sense of them sober.

Wally – I think Hickson has sick hops if he can get a drop step or any kind of momentum. I haven’t seen enough this year but last year I thought his vert from two flat feet was a little Gooden-esque. Any changes this year?
November 20th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
The Hornets were nasty in NBA Jam.
The Heat were the team to play, I thought. Rony Seikaly and Glen Rice. Neither had the highest ratings, but both could shoot 3’s and dunk.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
i dont mind the beatings at all. i suspect some of the traffic bump may have to do with lange fans who stuck with the site. it would probably be too much work to try and wrangle a celebrity each week … i like getting one person and running with it. options, clearly, are limited since these people are kind of a big deal and have actual shit going on …
wow, good night for movies, mean girls and shooter
but truthfully, im watching NBA TV hoping that they’ll cut to the Brandon Jennings game. he had 19 points in 12 mins to start the game
November 20th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
My favorite NBA Jame thing was the announcer going: “Ugly Shot!” or “Terrible Shot!” as you drain one.

That’s such a bummer cassino. I actually like the way windwaker’s animation looks too.

Travel T is averaging 1 shot every 2 minutes he plays. And he’s shooting 35%…
Sounds just about like what I expected out of a bull in a china shop who can’t jump over the phone book of a small village.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
Which is interesting, because I thought he played quite well…he just happened to be on the floor when the Pacers were missing every shot they were throwing up. Additionally odd, is AV’s +16…he pretty much was a non-factor, IMO.

@JayV, nice use of your considerable influence the other day

The best “dude can’t jump” line I’ve ever heard was in Simmons’ book: “He couldn’t jump over a picture of the Sunday edition of the Washington Post”. That shit had me laughing for five solid minutes.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Varejao, for the floppy hair and the step ins for charges, is a very, very good defender, who makes the Cavs team defense tremendously better. Offensively, he moves without the ball constantly, which makes the Cavs offense move better. His numbers don’t show it, but he is a very, very valuable piece to the Cavs.
Hansbrough looked like I thought he would. Strong, but athletically overmatched. And I thought he was not very good tonight.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

When I was a kid, there was a show called Bizarre that came on late on Saturdays, and Super Dave’s stunts were a recurring skit on that. He had lots of Mex1can jokes, and unnecessary bleeping. It was funny then. This even predates Letterman.

I looked it up, Taguchi, it started in 1980. I am definitely in the geriatric portion of this little troupe.
By the way, since you’re the only one interested, I picked up my 7 cases of wine today, final cost $4.41/bottle.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Scrubs did have a finale. But they brought it back, presumably cause the ratings were good. Love that show.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
mak: good luck man. Hope everything is all right.
dirt: thx. I jumped in about 30 minutes ago & hadn’t read the top. thx. also didn’t know that about the Einstein Brothers.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Scrubs has had two sort of finales (with last year’s being pretty good I thought) but they keep renewing it even though it gets terrible ratings. I really don’t understand it. I’m not even really complaining, since I still enjoy the show, but it’s a shell of it’s former self. I wish they would just add Sarah Chalke to HIMYM permanently.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Dr. Cox rants were epic. His wife insults was the shit too.

His wife insults was the shit too.
I hate that chick. I do like some Perry Cox though.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
very nice. I walked into a local grocery store about a month ago and they were randomly clearing out an insane amount of inventory on wine (stuff that usually went $15-$20) all marked down between 3-6 bucks. I spent just over $200. It has not contributed well to my laziness. I love that I’m sober right now and still not doing what I’m supposed to be doing though.

Jay: I had no idea what you were talking about, so I googled it, and found some site on how to study for my what.cd “interview”, and how if you tried to google off to look up data you were done. I didn’t know if they were serious, or I was being punked-lol
My kids (and I, on occasion) have used one of “those” sites to get songs (like 8500 of them) at a pret-ty pret-ty low price
November 20th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Not only that, but you’ve specifically singled out by Paolo as a bojack ninnie.
)
November 20th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
fetch, shouldn’t you be out drinking? What the hell are you doing here? Or do you have the GRE’s or something along those lines?

the little redesign tweak should happen next week. R&D guy gets back from hawaii this weekend. it is 95% ready.
i have dropped the ball on the hockey guy. that’s totally on me. sorry, i cant get excited about hockey at all. maybe when things pick up after the AS break?
November 20th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Come the fuck on Utah State!
November 20th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
By the way, that’s an OLD 30. My son is 12 so I really consider myself to be 42.
/I’m a statistic and an after school special
November 20th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
I know gooch, but a lot of my friends are either out of town or not doing anything tonight, so I don’t have any other choice. I could go to the bar and troll for some cougars I guess.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them. :>
November 20th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Called a buddy a bojack ninnie last weekend at the Philly Beer Festival, never looked more confused in his life…until 4hrs later when he was hammered.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Paolo doesn’t cotton to all that thrusting.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Annie on Community (otherwise known as Trudy Campbell on Mad Men) is hot. Definitely.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
By the way, that’s an OLD 30. My son is 12 so I really consider myself to be 42.

GG: Hard in the beginning, but better off later. I’m 48 with an 18 y/o son and 14 y/o daughter, and I have friends my age just having kids or have little kids. Those poor fuckers have no idea what it’s gonna be like to be 65 and waiting for little Johnny to come home at 3 AM.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Hahahaha +1. That killed me for some reason.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Not to mention I need a weekend off from drinking cause last weekend wasn’t a lot of fun
November 20th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
sorry, i cant get excited about hockey at all. maybe when things pick up after the AS break?
that’s why you were going to let somebody else do it. But whatever, I was just curious, I’m not a hockey guy at all.
Where’s that guy who said Paolo comments on some Indiana High School message board. I want a link to that. I think whoever that guy was also liked sexing up old ladies.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
dirt: Sallie mae
November 20th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Can definitely see this. When I look at what my father had accomplished at my age I can understand his desire to punch me in the face. If he in fact harbors that desire.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Oh pipe down with that talk.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Pussy.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
My dad went the opposite on all that, told me he’ll punch me in the face if I’m just married before 33.
He’s been divorced three times.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
I want a link to that. I think whoever that guy was also liked sexing up old ladies.
Yeah, that more of a ten months down he line admission than a you just showed up last week admission. It’s not like I’ve told you guys about May 13th, 2002 yet.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
the R&D guy is on vacation more than anyone i know. goddamm i want his job
November 20th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
cabbage’s comment was perfectly within reason. doesn’t mean i can’t fire back … i firmly believe – if you can dish it, you should be able to take it.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
fetch, we’re in our drinking prime dammit.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
I told TBL this story a while back, I’ll repeat it here…I was having a beer at the Philly airport sometime this summer, waiting to pick my Mom up as she was arriving for a visit. I glance over at the gut next to me, and he is reading TBL on his iPhone. TBL said I should ask him who he is, but I said, “No way, I don’t want to run the risk of it being Paolo!”
November 20th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
/fixed
//or has that changed?
November 20th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
It was a bit of a mind fuck when I found out but it was easy once the kid was actually born. You just go to work on the parenting thing. Lucky to have had a good family around me.
I think the positives outweigh the negatives in my particular case. I’m just grateful that he can’t kick my ass in most sports yet. He schools me in hockey but that’s about it. It gives me a little more credibility when I do the coaching thing.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Damnit, I guess I am going out to the bar. I really don’t want to though.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
[presses space bar] time for break!
/the new r&d guy’d
November 20th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
It’s not like I’ve told you guys about May 13th, 2002 yet.
it’s not your fault. it’s not your fault. it’s not your fault.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
i could go sign up for school. and graduate without worrying about paying off all those loans you are gonna try to duck. im still thinking it over.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Yes, not til 10! Half hour to pre-game, touchdown.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
that’s funny JayV, but I think Paolo only has a lair. I can’t imagine him typing those missives on a sidekick.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
I would be at a bar so fast if I wasn’t at work right now. I’ve never needed a drink more than this week. Two firings, and I got out of work before 4am just once. Hell, 6am last night…or this morning. Whichever.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Since we’re knocking on Paolo, can you imagine him walking around town, rating ladies under his breath on the Vegas scale, but never talking to any of them?
I would not want that guy to know where I lived if I had a sports blog that he was this obsessed with.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
i have told this story – minus the Paolo part – to no fewer than 14 people.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
kinda like Dr. Claw?
November 20th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Truth spoken here
November 20th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
actually, it’s more than that. still gotta find pics/videos, which can be difficult enough for the college fball/nfl posts. then i gotta edit it. and most of all, it needs to be interesting/compelling.
i know the hockey guy we’re going to use knows his stuff … the keys, IMO, are getting stories before they ‘pop’ (that usually means video, which the hardcore hockey fans are all over)
November 20th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
back from workout.. saw the King comment from ESPN social networking “we choose to hold ourselves to higher standards” – He also gets his material from Olhmeyer’s PR flak apparently.
TBL – is it possible user links come up in a new tab or new window, vs. it jumping me from my current page?
November 20th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
you’re welcome
November 20th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
That Brie video is great…have no idea why it exists or what it was originally part of but I approve
November 20th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
I don’t know what the hell that was, but bravo.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Celtics have some work to do from here on out now if they’re going to break the ‘96 Bulls’ record for win…wonder what Sheed thinks of this
November 20th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Who’s surprised?

//To Hell With Georgia
November 20th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Oh, and the Hawks win again.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Sweet Jebus. I need a cold shower after that vid… Great work.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
That was video of the day over at Manginiblog a couple of weeks ago.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
A non-related link from the UGA arrests article. That is unimaginable to me. Makes me want to throw up…
/The urge to toss cookies went away with another viewing of the Brie video
//Thanks again
November 20th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
alright folks I’m outta here. I’ll probably check in via my phone later, and if I get drunk enough leave a paolo-esque 4 AM rant
November 20th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Please do that. Please.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
fetch: you missed out. I just got back from picking my daughter up at this outdoor carnival thing and as I’m driving this maybe 16 y/o girl walks out with the most anatomically incorrect body I’ve ever seen (like an 18″ waist and 34DD top, showing quite a bit).
/I immediately thought of you
//not a perv, trust me!!
November 20th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
speaking of reading TBL on iPhone, any chance of making it more mobile-friendly?

November 20th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Wow. That’s terrible.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
they dont make a lot of women like that dude’s wife. she has a huge heart
November 20th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Just saw John Hollinger’s piece on tonight’s Hawks game. That makes two Hawks games he’s attended this week. They must be pretty good.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
i’m out guys
have a good weekend if I don’t talk to you
November 20th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Sounds like a dream.
/all the chicks here are too old
November 20th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

haven’t hte first clue where to begin.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
they’ll loose in the semis…as usual
November 20th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
34. with a soon to be 16 y/o son. 12 y/o daughter. 9 y/o son. That makes me … nearly senile. The daughter alone gives me ulcers. The older she gets, the more I want to hurt boys/men looking at her…
November 20th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Probably a simple wordpress plug-in. the big deal should be able hook it up with ease.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
I think it is a plug-in. Ask Fetch, he’s got a mobile friendly version for his new site.

i’m 43, with 2-yo twins, a 4-yo and a 9-yo stepson. will be 59 before we have the place to ourselves. we’ll be headed for peace corps so they can’t come home
November 20th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Shit. Number 2 is in the hopper and I’ll be 2 months on the backside of 4-0 when it comes out… Good thing I look and act like I’m 30…

Great tweet from Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland PD during the Cavs/Pacer game:

feeling as good as i do at 43, i’d have kids in my 20s and have some empty nest fun while i could still talk w/o drroling. but i’ll always tell younguns, if you’re gonna wait, have as much fun/travel while you;re single. i had a lot of fun up to 38, and so this anchored lifestyle is no problem. always wanted to be married w/kids, just couldn;t close the deal. had three fiances, married the third
November 20th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Right there with you vezina (except the 3 fiancees)… Had a lot of fun in my late 20’s and early 30’s. Made a lot of jack, traveled a great deal, and enjoyed my share of the good life…
Couldn’t be happier with my decision, especially since I’m 10 years senior to my lovely bride… Just keeps me feeling younger every day!
November 20th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Well, I joked I felt old a while back in this thread, that’s definitely no longer the case.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:10 am
that’s just it, billy, 43 doesn;t feel old. had i known that back in my 20s, and because it seems like it would be nice to be only a few years from an empty nest, i’d have kids in my early 20s. then again, those that have them in their early 20s, regret all that young-crazy time spent domestically
wally, my bride’s eight years younger, and bonus–all kids by c-section!
