Notre Dame and Charlie Weis, Anyone?
1-liner, College Football, Recruiting November 20th. 2009, 2:45pmNotre Dame and Charlie Weis: Since we were talking about recruiting and the Irish this week, here’s a stat for you – the 28-player recruiting class that Charlie Weis hauled in back in 2006 plays its last home game Saturday. Ten of those players have transferred. Only nine of those players “had an impact” (whatever that means). And since the group began playing regularly, their record is an underwhelming 16-19. Now the question becomes – were those kids “overrated” in high school, or did Charlie Weis just not do a good job coaching them? A combination of the two? Something else entirely? [Tribune]

Somewhat on topic, Paul Johnson agrees to an extension at Georgia Tech. Story here.

Just like preseason team rankings, recruit rankings are not that predictive of success. National championships and money-making are the two standards, for fans and programs. I;m sure it’s easy for folk not named Vezina to research top-rated recruiting classes and their success
November 20th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
But they’re on national TV every week! How could this be? The mind splodes…
November 20th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
They were evaluated incorrectly because they were being recruited by Notre Dame.
November 20th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
They were all forced to read Weiss’s book “Eating for Success”

Notre Dame has returned to glory.

Recruiting services pander to large fan bases to sell subscriptions. Thus, ND football recruits, Duke basketball recruits, etc., get artificially inflated rankings
November 20th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
the top 5 programs in the country- usc, fla, osu, tex, lsu have been the top recruiting schools as well.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
It’s this kind of undeserving love that ND gets on here that has cost one of the more likeable commenters his commenting ability for the remainder of 2009. WHAT ELSE MUST HAPPEN BEFORE SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS?!?!?! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!
November 20th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
I actually did a ton of pain in the ass research for this blog I wrote for a couple of years ago, and basically, it was a large waste of time. The statistical relationship between a top 5 recruiting class and a national champioinship (or even a decent end of season ranking) is tenuous at best.

@younglefty: You mean post.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
@Ill: You must mean Mole. I miss him too.

Has there been a Notre Dame post every day this week? Are there other 6-5 teams that get posts everyday? I never thought I would long for MORE blind items and posts about players girlfriends…

Notre Dame and Charlie Weis, Anyone?
Sorry. I’m too geeked thinking about being able to read Fridays with Artie this Sunday morning
November 20th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
duder, what do you think about young lefty’s comment, #10? the way i see it, those top five programs make a lot of money and three of them have won NCs this decade (usc, texas, fla)
November 20th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Huh?
November 20th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Paolo?

you arent counting the one OSU won in 02 and the ones LSU won in 03 and 07?
November 20th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
lefty – link to your research? I started doing this about a year ago for S&F and got overwhelmed with the assumptions and variabels.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
duder, what do you think about young lefty’s comment, #10? the way i see it, those top five programs make a lot of money and four of them have won NCs this decade (usc, texas, fla, lsu)

@hernia, don’t lie… no one likes a mole. they made a show about it and everything.

A “schematic advantage” (HA!) is great in the pros. But in college, a large part of the coaching job is to turn these great high school athletes into great football players.
Obviously, some HS players have been groomed by good coaches but a huge portion have gotten by on mere athleticism/size. Which is fine if you have a coach that knows how to turn that athletic monster into a monster football player.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
obviously, i tried to correct, but still missed osu. thanks–glad you;re not spence
November 20th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Did 2002 not happen?
November 20th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Sadly, that piece of internet real estate has been bulldozed. I get what you’re saying with assumptions and variables, though. It’s a big pain in the cock, and the end result is that you don’t know any more than you knew before you started.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
so lefty, i was sorta wrong, ok pretty wrong. that’s 7 NCs in the decade from top recruiting-class getters. how far back did your research go?
November 20th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
No idea about the fball recruiting, but bball recruiting is as irrelevant as it gets.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
I was pretty thorough. Just remember, for every champ you’ve got like USC, Texas, etc., you’ve got a Notre Dame, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, and on and on and on, that don’t win a NC. Basically, it’s really fuckin tough to win a NC, and recruting class rankings are one of the worst predictors of future championships.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
and recruting class rankings are one of the worst predictors of future championships
this makes me a serious serious good guesser and still the champeen of laziness
November 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
One of the worst? Go back and look at typical top ten recruiting teams. Chances are one of those teams will win the MNC each year.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Like I said, go ask Arkansas (and Houston Nutt), Ole Miss (under Orgeron), Georgia, Notre Dame, etc. Lots of high ranking classes, no titles. There are better metrics, I’m sure.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
going by rivals- texas had the #1 class in 02- they were seniors when they won it in 05. florida #2 class in 03- won in 06. lsu #2 in 04- won in 07.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
But what are they? And Arkansas and Ole Miss do not recruit with the big boys. They’ll have a good year and pull some good players but to put them in a list of ‘top recruiting schools’ is just incorrect.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
I don’t know what they are. I only researched the recruiting ranking angle. I had a long diatribe, but this sums it up pretty nicely.
November 20th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Mel Kiper was on the radio this morning in DC killing Charlie Weis and Notre Dame. He just killed their defense. Vinnie Cerrato, closest thing the Skins have to a GM, has a weekly Friday morning radio show. Cerrato defended Weis, poorly. Kiper talked circles around Cerrato about how ND’s defense has zero talent and is terrible. Cerrato came off like a confused senior citizen lost at a mall.
/sorry for the semi thread jack

But Lou Holtz loves their chances to play in the NC game!

The very good Dr. Saturday (I believe he was Sunday Morning Quarterback at this point) actually did the research on this very topic and found that recruiting rankings have very strong correlations with winning.
