Civil War Will Be a Battle for the Rose Bowl
1-liner, College Football November 22nd. 2009, 2:30pmRose Bowl: For the first time in 113 meetings, Oregon and Oregon State will play with a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line. How did this come to be? Oregon rallied to beat Arizona in double OT late last night, and Cal stopped Stanford late to hand the Cardinal their third loss in Pac-10 play. Oregon hasn’t been to the Rose Bowl since 1995. Oregon State’s last trip to Pasadena was in 1965. The Civil War will be on Dec. 3.

Teams from the state of Oregon haven’t won a Rose Bowl in Pasadena since 1917.

How can it be a Civil War when no one cares about either side?

They should have something stupid like the Lewis and Clark trophy.

The “Do we have Portland or do we have Seattle?” trophy

First time for everything. I married into an Oregon family (wife’s an alum of one of their grad schools) and they are pumped. But as a Stanford alum, I was pretty sick about the way the game ended.
Kind of funny how the weekend after the Belichick firestorm, we have some crazy decisions by coaches on Saturday (the Yale coach going for a fake punt; the Cal coach taking a knee and settling for a field goal when Stanford’s defense couldn’t stop them; and Gerhart not touching the ball on Stanford’s last two offensive plays inside the 15.)

I don’t care about either team but this is one of the better rivalries in college football. A lot better than most Big 10 ‘rivalries’ where every team is playing for some stupid trophy/ax/jug against every other team in the league ever fucking weekend.

triston: I don’t give a shit that Purdue won the Old Oaken Bucket either, and I went there.
My point is to call a game in Oregon The Civil War is a little overhyped, in that 99.9999997% of the US will never step foot in Oregon in their lives. My cousin has lived there for 10 years, and he could give a shit less.
The only thing the majority of Amwricans know about Oregon is that Michelle “I’ve got pythons under my sleeves” Obama’s brother coaches hoops at OSU, because the media told us about, oh, 4 billion times last fall.

jpq, I agree that calling it The Civil War is pretty dumb. They used to call it The Oregon Classic. Which I think is much better.

I’ll watch it, if only for the badass running back names. On one side you got LaMichael and LeGarrette (assuming they let him play), and on the other, Jaquizz.

you could have west virginia vs virginia as the civil war or anything else
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Wait, wasn’t the Civil War at the LSU/Ole Miss game yesterday?
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
i dont know but i would have it with a union state vs confederate state imo
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Oh I bet Quizz cares too.
I see JPQ is digging deep into the hate bucket this morning. The name has been around for 70 years, far before ‘hype’ ever made its way to Oregon.
I thought this kind of stuff only happened at mean ole Autzen Stadium?

Thanks for the scrimmage, Seahawks fans!

November 22nd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Full of water, that would pack a punch thrown from a distance. They did it at a basketball game against USC last year too.

no, I just don’t get calling a football game about something that occurred 3000 miles away from a state that was created right around then and had nothing to do with.
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I have Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell. Fucking a Jay. At least Nate Burleson had a big day for me.
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Steelers likely going to overtime. Somehow I get the feeling they won’t cover -11 today.
