Panic in Pittsburgh, Josh McDaniels is a Punk, and Revis Shut Down Moss (Yes, it’s True)
NFL, Video November 23rd. 2009, 9:40am
Let’s open with three thoughts on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who just three weeks ago, after throttling the Broncos in Denver on Monday Night Football, were heralded by many as having “that Super Bowl look.”
1. Boy do they miss playmaking safety Troy Polamalu. The Steelers have blown three fourth quarter leads this season (at Chicago, at Cincinnati, at Kansas City). Imagine if Brett Favre hadn’t bungled that final drive last month! Last year, Pittsburgh was 1st in the NFL vs. the pass. This year, they’re 13th.
2. Could the Steelers … miss the playoffs? Seems highly unlikely since the schedule is favorable. However, they’ve lost a tiebreaker with the Bengals, and they have to play the Ravens twice. It seems unlikely they’ll be swept by Baltimore, though. Could the Jaguars overtake Pittsburgh? Both are 6-4, and the Jags still have to play the Patriots and Colts.
3. Just how gut-wrenching was this loss to the Chiefs? Total yards: Pittsburgh 515-282. Time of possession: Pittsburgh 44-22.
Your Catch of the weekend goes to Dallas “Stop It! Stop It!” Clark:
Larry Fitzgerald would have been in contention for his tightrope job on the sideline, but alas, the Cardinals have a pathetic fanbase, so nobody uploaded it to the web.
Josh McDaniels Can’t Back Up His Trash Talk:
Shrimpy Denver coach Josh McDaniels to the Chargers linebackers before the game: “We own you.” Depending on who you want to believe, Shaun Phillips of San Diego started it all, and McDaniels just fired back.
McDaniels is a clown. If he’s going to say anything, he should have gone to the San Diego special teams unit and said, “Eddie Royal owns you.”
Result: Broncos 3, Chargers 32. Denver was limited to 271 yards of offense, McDaniels started Chris Simms (nice guy, but sorry, he’s no NFL QB) when he should have started a not-quite-100 percent Kyle Orton (who played anyway) and the AFC West lead is gone. Denver won’t make the playoffs, but it isn’t that big a deal. Going 6-0 to not making the playoffs? Painful. But remember, expectations were low in year one for a rookie coach. Perspective, folks.
Revis vs. Moss:
Altogether now: Darrell Revis is the best cornerback in the NFL. He shut down Randy Moss Sunday – 5 catches, 34 yards – after talking about it all week. Moss did have a touchdown catch, but he didn’t “beat” Revis; Revis gave him too big a cushion at the goaline and Brady threw a quick dart. Moss is still obviously a Top 5 receiver in the league. The real problem with the Jets secondary is they don’t have another good corner – Wes Welker dominated (15 catches, 192 yards) – and safety Kerry Rhodes has regressed big-time this season. Last week, he botched coverage that allowed a huge play in the fourth against Jacksonville, setting up the final score; yesterday, too often he looked clueless and lost. He can’t hit hard. He makes mental errors. And he has no speed. We were all set to push for the Jets to draft Alabama CB/KR Javier Arenas in the draft, but we’re wondering if perhaps Taylor Mays would be worth a look (don’t think Eric Berry will fall to 10, which is where the Jets will draft). Clearly, the secondary needs help.
We’ll get to Mark Sanchez later. Save your venom.

Why throw to Moss when the Jets didn’t cover Wes Welker?
The definition of shutting down a WR usually does not include said WR catching a TD.

It’s amazing how average the Steelers look when they don’t have a 1337 defense.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:43 am
I have not seen the highlights yet, but apparently the Lions game was badass and Stafford looked really good. Oh, and Michael Jenkins can go fuck himself.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:46 am
The Steelers just need to hire their team doctors from the 1970’s
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 am
and safety Kerry Rhodes has regressed big-time this season
he hasnt been good since 2006. overpaid
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 am
So the idea is to bring attention to the good corner play and away from the horrific QB play? Got it.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 am
So, McDaniels running his mouth = bad, but Rex Ryan & Bart Scott running their mouths (after a loss, no less) = good? I like it.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:48 am
Revis wasnt the only guy covering Moss in that game, it looked like they were switching it up. And I dont know how you go to Moss when he usually drawing the safety which clears the way for Welker.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:48 am
So that’s two teams now whose seasons clearly peaked with wins over the Pats – Jets and Broncos
Revis did shut down Moss, I’ll agree on that. Brady threw the TD ball in a perfect PERFECT spot even though Revis was draped all over him. No DB could’ve stopped that.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:48 am
If Sanchez stayed at USC he would be the #1 pick next year and USC would be in the top-5.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:49 am
what is 1337 defense

November 23rd, 2009 at 9:49 am
Soooo…Brady beat him?
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:49 am
even though i agree with wally, revis is the best CB in the NFL right now. ndami is no. 2. and jonathan joseph has been pretty tits this year too even tho he’s a faggy bengal.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:50 am
Ray Lewis had a nice play to cause a turnover @ the goal line. Dude is still nice.
McDaniels is who we thought he was. Too young and way too high on his self to be running an NFL franchise. He’s going to go the way of the rest of the exPatsy geniuses.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:50 am
are you new to the interwebs?
1337 = leet…or elite.
jesus man…play some fuckin’ counterstrike. and here i thought you were a military man…what, they don’t teach you about 1337-ness in boot camp?
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 am

November 23rd, 2009 at 9:52 am
I’m looking forward to the Cleveland-Detroit replay on NFL Network.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:52 am
Also, nice not-so-legal pick by Reggie Wayne on that Clark TD
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:53 am
Don’t get me wrong. Revis is badass. However, bragging about him in a loss when he also gave up a TD is the wrong time to brag about him…
/Love talking about other teams to avoid discussing how the Browns broke my heart again yesterday

Mark Sanchez would have stopped their defense from giving up 3215 points against Stanford and Oregon.
By the way, the Saints are 10-0. The media seems to have missed that in the wake of the Cowboys’ exciting 7-6 game.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:55 am
fuck that noise.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:56 am
Just like the people yelling Super Bowl after 6-0 were off base, so is this.
Also, fuck the Chargers. Like they haven’t made talking a ton of shit and having nothing to show for it a cottage industry.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:56 am
In the picture above where Revis blocked the ball, it was badly underthrown and Moss had him beat to the back corner.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:56 am
Oh, and Michael Jenkins can go fuck himself.
that was a terrible drop. I don’t know how that game would have played out if they make that TD there, but definitely differently.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:56 am
broke your heart? you mean it wasn’t broken already?
hey man…they’re playing for a draft slot now. a win doesn’t do jack shit.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:57 am
Broncos killed themselves by fumbling the ball inside the red zone twice. (though the second was bullshit because he crossed the line, yet somehow cbs didn’t have a camera angle).
Have you not seen ESPN this morning?
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:58 am
Also, nice not-so-legal pick by Reggie Wayne on that Clark TD
dumb. A: picks are legal on bump and run coverage inside of 5 yards, and B: Reggie Wayne doesn’t even touch anybody. Ed Reed jumped his route and left Clark uncovered.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:58 am
1-15 is the best possible scenario right now. Although they’d still probably lose the coinflip to the Rams and Bucs.
November 23rd, 2009 at 9:59 am
Didn’t know that. Something tells me Ron Turner doesn’t know this either. And neither do a lot of teams that suck in the red zone.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:00 am
best possible scenario? they still play KC and oakland…there’s still a chance for 2-14 cuz we all know they’re not winning both of those games.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:00 am
Yeah, but it was Knowshon Moreno. Fuck him.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:00 am
Going 6-0 to not making the playoffs? Painful. But remember, expectations were low in year one for a rookie coach. Perspective, folks.
Tell that to 2008 ‘Skins fans.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:00 am
Nope. I don’t do that anymore.
I’m basing it on last night’s SNF highlights, which were in this order:
Cowboys
Favre
the other undefeated team
Patriots
Steelers
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:01 am
I never talked that garbage. I was vocally against the hire and the trade of Cutler. I’d take Cutler back today.
NONE of the exPatsy brain trust has gone on to do jack and nothing I have seen from McD makes me think its going to change. The celebration on field after the NE game was lame and showed how unBelichekien he is.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:03 am
Jay, your persecution complex is unbearable. The Saints got compared to the 2007 Patriots offense last night. Called unstoppable, extended highlights, etc. They got the royal treatment (and rightly so).
The Cowboys got excoriated by everyone in the room (rightly so).
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:03 am
Best possible scenario is to go for the best possible draft pick. Might as well re-sign Charlie Frye and have him start those two games.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:04 am

id rather completely block out the memories i have of charlie frye playing for the browns.

November 23rd, 2009 at 10:05 am
ha. That celebration reminded me of winning a game on madden
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 am
Maybe not, but USC would have scored far more points. Barkley has been a grease fire the last 4 weeks.
It was embarrassing. He drops far too many balls, and the worst part is that he drops very catchable passes like the one yesterday.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 am
Sir Weeze, like a rub route, not an out and out pick. They relaxed those rules in the early part of the 2000’s, after the competition committee watched film of the Patriots/Colts playoff games where the Colts receivers couldn’t get off the ball. They also decided not long after to start enforcing illegal contact on every chicken shit touch any DB made at 6 yards.
The NFL was legislating more touchdowns and excitement.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:07 am
pumping up your team is totally different than calling out players by name after they just beat you.
but i don’t have a dog in this fight and frankly don’t care.

November 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 am
Does anybody want to hear me tease the Ravens? They took 7 trips to scoring territory yesterday, including a 1st and goal from the 1 yard line against the Colts. They ended up with 5 FG’s, 1 missed FG, and an awful, game losing INT because Flacco had completely quit looking at anybody but Ray Rice, and two linebackers and a D lineman were shadowing him.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 am

Didn’t say you did, just said it was as off-base as your current point.
And if you think Cutler would have made this team better, wow.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 am
Thats because the media thinks Dallas plays in the BCS system. The only football team that gets style points both negatively and positively
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 am

November 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 am

But it’s the jets, and Rex and Bart are just gamers. Hard-nosed gamers.

@Dirt: Don’t forget that incredible playmaking ability of Ed Reed at the end of the game.
man, the colts know how to take advantage of other teams massive mistakes. good on them for that.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:13 am
At least it was a white guy that got thrown through the glass. Otherwise, we’d have trouble. If you want to hurl racial slurs in public, you deserve whatever beat down you get. I think that guy lucked out that the cops got to him before some people he might have offended.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:15 am
Don’t forget that incredible playmaking ability of Ed Reed at the end of the game.
That was weak sauce by Reed. They weren’t driving 40 yards in 22 seconds with Flacco at the helm, anyway.

Fitpatrick is a Harvard grad. So him being on a NFL roster to me is worth a 95 passer rating. Freeman is in a shitstorm down there. All solid points I just wanted to poke TBL in the ribs.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:31 am
god damnit…i quit saying that in like week 2.
but it does warm the cockles of my heart that PIT invested so heavily into a guy who’s had his fourth concussion (including when he maliciously and purposefully ran into that poor woman’s chrysler) and that they’re cap strapped with a shitty OL.
yay!!!
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:31 am
Steelers are definitely in trouble, but still should still make the playoffs. Bengals are far from a lock to win the division, choking is in their DNA. They would have to go 5-1 to get to 11 wins and be a virtual lock, 4-2 and they’ll need help. Schedule isn’t easy, but not brutal. As long as Ben isn’t seriously hurt and Troy comes back soon they should be able to make a run.
Oh, and fire that POS special teams coach.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:32 am
Dirt, the Cowboys are a sore subject for Saints fans because the fan bases overlap geographically. The Shreveport station shows the Saints over the Cowboys, which was frustrating when I lived up there. The football publications that come out with “regional” covers always put the Cowboys on the cover over the Saints. The media acts like Tony Romo is a better quarterback than Drew Brees. The Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in a generation, and the Saints are unbeaten and were in the NFC Championship game three years ago.
And they still lead with the Cowboys last night?
It pisses Saints fans off beyond belief. What the Hell do we have to do?
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:32 am

I’ll say this for Sanchez. He has an NFL arm. That’s the opposite of Brady Quinn. He has the arm strength of Chad Pennington, with those popcorn muscles of his.
I saw some TD highlights yesterday for the Browns, and he had to put so much air under his 30 yard deep ball it was sad.

lots of yards + lots of TD’s + just enough mistakes to lose the game = Super duper elite QB.
Welcome to the club Ben.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:53 am
I think we can rout Favre. Sharper will be the difference. You know he knows Favre, and Brad Childress.
Arizona somehow doesn’t scare me. They will want to get in a scoring contest with us, and I don’t think they can hang. The teams that have had success against us are the ball-control teams that keep the ball out of our hands.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:54 am
ill…all is forgiven.
November 23rd, 2009 at 10:58 am
Right now, that defines the Vikings. Favre may regress to the “gunslinger” again before the year is over. However, for now, they eat clock with offense and turn the defense loose.
Saints will get all the publicity they ever asked for this week, playing the Pats…
/Hoping for 48-45 Saints win so that Brady and Moss chalk up obscene points for my FF squad. Need a win!
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:01 am
yeah, Jay, I hope you can entice the Vikes into a shootout, but I think the ball gets crammed down your throat. Favre the gunslinger has given way to Favre the game manager. If you can get into a shootout, then you have them, because he makes mistakes.
Rice and Harvin are nasty, nasty, nasty, though.

November 23rd, 2009 at 11:07 am
If we’re gonna lose a game, I hope it’s Monday night. It’s a non-conference game and the Vikings’ only loss so far was non-conference. If we both go 15-1 and we lose to somebody like the Falcons, we’re screwed.
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:09 am
I don’t think the Vikings go 15-1. At Arizona looks tough and they never win in Chicago (which is in late December). Cincy and NYG are both at home and will probably be pretty close games.
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:10 am
the good news is, the Vikes schedule is not as easy from here on out as it looked in the preaseason. The Saints (outside of this week) looks pretty sweet, except for the 2 division road games.
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:18 am
Unless Cheeseburgher is out with Batch the Steelers will beat us twice. We’ve shown all year that we’ll find a way to lose to good teams (4 losses by a total 14pts) Ray by the way, hurt his foot on the previous play. He’s still money stopping RB’s but he’s now terrible in pass coverage.
