After 26 Games, Matt Ryan and Mike Vick, Statistically, Are Close
1-liner, NFL November 23rd. 2009, 3:25pmMatt Ryan vs. Mike Vick: Eye-opening comparison between last year’s top pick and the guy who will be starting somewhere in 2010. After 26 games, Vick was 16-9-1; Ryan was 16-10. The two are virtual equals in passer rating. Ryan has him by a bit in completion percentage. Vick had a far superior 2nd season to Ryan. Vick won his first playoff game with the Falcons. Ryan didn’t. (AJC)

Vick leveled off after his second season statistically. Do you honestly believe Ryan’s numbers are going to get worse over time? Mike Vick admitted that he never put in the work he needed to to be a successful passer. He had a gift. The NFL figured him out and he never adjusted. The NFL has adjusted to what Matt Ryan does well. Everyone who has been around him says he works incessantly to get better. Matt Ryan doesn’t have freakish athletic ability to overcome those adjustments. He’ll get better. Vick didn’t. This whole comparison is asinine.

Was Vick a rookie when he did that? Before the shit hit the fan Vick was good for ATL. He was exciting and put butts in the seats.

As an aside, I loved Vick. He was undoubtedly good for the franchise while he played. He still was declining as a passer when he got locked up and was never going to get better.

Yet again. Win loss records of QBs is dumb. Does Matt Ryan play defense? They gave up 34 points yesterday.

That’s Mark Bradley for you.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Vick’s dogs beat the shit out of Ryan’s dogs also.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm
record = not a good stat to measure a QB’s individual performance
passer rating = inherently flawed
completion % = doesn’t mean shit in terms of production
their performances aren’t anything alike.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Yeah Mark Bradley does come up with some crazy assertions.
He recently gave 5 reasons that Paul Johnson wouldn’t go to Notre Dame. One of which was he’s not media friendly

ATL’s D has been bad for two years and it will stay that way for another. They are so short on talent there. The secondary is horrible and the D-line is weak up the middle.

I think logically the next step in Ryan’s career is to be arrested for gambling on manatee fights.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:36 pm
He’s a fool. One of them was also based on the O’leary fiasco. WTF does that have to do with Johnson? Would Illinois not pursue Urban Meyer because Zook sucked? Will the Jets never draft a QB from USC because Sanchez blows? (I kid, TBL)

This team was too thin on defense to sustain any injuries. Moore was hurt from day one so he couldn’t challenge DeCoud. Jerry’s knee injury left them playing journeymen at the DT position opposite the original dog killa and Brian Williams’ injury was an absolute killer.
Still, the biggest disappointment has been the complete disappearance of John Abraham. It’s not that teams are focusing entirely on him. He isn’t beating OT’s one on one at all this year. He was the only impact player on the defense and he’s been non-existent.

when i was an intern in journalism, podunk paper, they let me write columns. dennis erickson had just been hired at the U after his tenure at Idaho, where I had played for him– OK practiced for him. I asked to write a column about him saying he’d never adjust to the spotlight, pressure and media frenzy after his time in backwater bojack ninnyville. i wrote it. erickson won an NC

+1 Terrible Pass
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:40 pm
seriously? the guy was in the low 50’s. the average starts at 60%. if you cant throw catchable balls then you’re not worth a damn.

has potential for an SNL skit. would love to see the housing and training of said beasts, not to mention the hats and t-shirts of the posse. manatees sport some great scars from boats

Vick also got forced into a system that didn’t suit his skill set after Reeves as fired for Vick getting hurt. Jim Mora jr is a moron.
/that is all
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:42 pm
You really believe that? I guess it’s possible, but I highly, highly doubt it.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:42 pm
the guy who will be starting somewhere in 2010
That somewhere? Toronto. Even Pope Dungy doesn’t have the pull to get that prick a starting job… unless maybe it’s in Oakland.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Abraham has hit a wall or something. He gets stoned by average LT’s now. They can’t get any pass rush on defense. None.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:46 pm
it does but they would ruin it by having kristen wiig be not funny in it and have the sketch go on 2 minutes too long with a bunch of “in the entertainment biz” inside jokes that no one gets. oh and they would have keenan thompson do “something that black people do”.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Have you seen the quarterbacks starting in the NFL?
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Biermann is the only one who gets close, but he’s a poor man’s Patrick Kearney. Jamal got one yesterday, but it got wiped out by a defensive penalty.
Jim Mora is a moron, but regardless of what system they were running, Vick wasn’t going to put in the work to be successful.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 pm
The more I read about Stafford’s play in Detroit yesterday, the more I think he just might be a stud QB.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:49 pm
vick more than made up for that with his legs.
what’s better…a dumpoff pass that boosts your comp % or vick himself running for 8 yards with a chance to break one? come on man…vick can’t be measured by regular statistics. he was a completely different animal.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:49 pm
That somewhere? Toronto
you mean Buffalo August?
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:51 pm
uh oh
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:52 pm
jpq told me the bills playoff games were blacked out when they were going to the superbowl every year. they suck now so they are in trouble.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:52 pm
you mean Buffalo August?
Post-jail Vick couldn’t sniff Ryan Fitzpatrick’s jock.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Rational thought has no place here, Spencer. You know this.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:52 pm
If you didn’t like watching Vick play football then you are a fucking liar.
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:53 pm

sad but true. i really hope they draft a QB in the next draft
November 23rd, 2009 at 3:53 pm

still selling out games

Argonauts.

Needs more juice, getting old.
Comparing single stats in a second year is fun and all, but says nothing about the player they will become.
Vick did everything on physical talent, which doesn’t really grow after you hit a certain age. Ryan does it with mostly with his brain, which continues to grow.
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I wouldn’t base any judgements off a Browns game
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
5 years ago, yes. Now…no.
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
How long until merely conquering the NFC South will not be enough for him and he enters the arena of cartoonish supervillainy?
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Ha, that’s pretty funny. But I’m talking in football period, not just Ryan. Players with the ability and desire to learn the game succeed far more often than those that don’t, even if they are less physically gifted.
Can’t believe I missed this whole post and the funny Sanchise post earlier. Dammit.
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Who do I send the bill to for the pants I ruined after shitting myself after reading Vick will be starting in ‘10. UFL?
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Is there a cure for that shit?
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I never liked Vick. 95% of it was because I think the Falcons are a boil on the NFL’s ass. Last night’s run also proved he’s lost a step. That would have been a touchdown 4 years ago.
That being said, Vick is still better than Fitzpatrick, Alex Smith, Delhomme, Tampa Bay’s three-headed suck machine, Chad Henne, the Raiders entire organization, The entire Browns organization, and the people backing up Favre.
