brett-favre-is-not-the-mvp-stop-the-madnessSeen a lot of folks touting Brett Favre as a legit MVP candidate. Worthy of the Top 10? Certainly. Guy’s competing 69 percent of his passes and has 21 TDs against three picks. Let’s also remember a few things: His defense leads the league in sacks (36) and is 3rd against the rush. His running back, Adrian Peterson, is 3rd in the league in rushing. And now, putting Favre’s gaudy stats in perspective:

* Of those nine wins, only two (Green Bay twice) came against teams with winning records. He has plenty of motivation to beat the Packers; heck, if he played Green Bay 10 more times in a row, we’re certain he’d win all 10.
* The last time he faced a real defense: Pittsburgh. What happened? Oh, right – sacked four times, threw a pick, fumbled. The Steelers defense scored twice.

Favre is an MVP contender. But on our ballot, he’s not in the top five. Up top has to be Peyton Manning, who has excelled despite injuries all around him. Drew Brees would be 2nd. Third won’t be popular, but he’s more important to his team than Favre is: Wes Welker in New England. Tom Brady is lost without him. Four is Favre’s teammate, defensive end Jared Allen: 2nd in the league in sacks, a safety, a defensive TD, and three forced fumbles. He’s been dominant. Rounding out our top five is Tennessee running back Chris Johnson, who is averaging a staggering 6.4 ypg on a bad team with no quarterback. He’s gone over 100 yards in five of nine games and he’s averaging 121 yards per game. If he can average 150 over the final 7 games – a longshot, but he is facing four bad defenses – then he’ll go over 2,000 for the season.

Perhaps we’re just in the minority – with T Jackson at the helm, the Vikings are probably 7-3. [Star Trib]
