FIFPro Will Lobby FIFA Against MLS Labor Practices
1-liner, Soccer November 24th. 2009, 2:50pm
Labor Dispute: FIFPro, the union of international footballers, will lobby FIFA on behalf of MLS players, who argue that the league’s contracts violate FIFA regulations. Unlike other leagues, MLS players do not have guaranteed contracts and cannot become free agents. They have even claimed the 10 percent of transfer fees entitled to players under FIFA regulations. FIFPro argues that MLS’ collective ownership of contracts creates “a cartel.” The league’s collective bargaining agreement expires in February. Should FIFA enforce their regulations it could fundamentally alter the financial structure MLS. (FIFPro)

FIFA already said they’re staying out of it.
Sucks for MLS players.

MLS was structured so that it couldn’t be hobbled by a big time Pele-like contract just as it was trying to build itself into a semi-legitimate league. The MLS isn’t a brand new league anymore, it’s time to lessen some of these restrictions.

American soccer (football!) is a fucking joke. For too long I’ve wanted to believe it would one day be relevant. After a shitty showing in South Africa next year, I’m done with it.

it’s funny because you’re in your early 20’s. That means the US has been playing in the World Cup since you were able to watch.
You should have seen US soccer prior to 1994. It made what we do now seem beautiful beyond measure.

I wish I was in my early 20’s. Still, I get your point.

But is MLS making enough money where if they lessen these restrictions the league won’t be harmed beyond repair? I am not the biggest soccer fan, (I’ll watch a minute of US games that are not WC and more of their games in the WC), but it would be a shame if it turned into Indoor Soccer and disappeared.

I said lessen restrictions, not end them.

They own Soccer United Marketing which pulls in a profit.
No one is saying to open the floodgates, but they can afford to give guys guaranteed contracts and some freedom of movement.
There is a contingent of owners like Robert Kraft who want to keep costs down. The Galaxy and Sounders would love to spend more money.

@Duffy: Isn’t the salary cap somewhere around $2.3 million? Why not set goals to have the cap reach $10 million by 2020 or something?
