Pre-Rivalry Weekend, Five College Football Teams to Watch in 2010
College Football, Video November 25th. 2009, 1:15pm
If Auburn’s 5-0 start had panned out, the Iron Bowl would be more epic than it has been in years. If Dez Bryant hadn’t had lunch with Deion and Sam Bradford hadn’t felt the wrath of a poor offensive line, Bedlam would have close to a dozen NFL players on the field (McCoy, Bradford, Bryant, Williams, Okung, etc). If Mike Sherman wasn’t a closeted homo, Texas A&M vs. Texas would likely be a bit more relevant. Stanford vs. ND woulda been fun too if Charlie Weis had a clue how to coach. There’s even a case for Illinois vs. Cincinnati as a coulda-been-good game. Unfortunately, none of ‘em really are.
This is how we’ll do this: we’ll start with a caveat, that being — this is one of the biggest reaches ever put on this site (um), because the final day to declare for the NFL Draft isn’t until mid-January. If Jimmy Clausen comes back with a Brian Kelly or Bob Stoops at the helm (and the receivers return), if Jake Locker comes back to an improving Washington program, if the PSU D decides to return en masse … well, in all likelihood none of those things would matter, as ND would go 7-5, Washington 6-6 (8-4 at best) and PSU 9-3, 10-2 at best. But, the point is: We don’t know enough for this to mean anything. It’s an exercise in fun, not in reality. Kinda like hitting on your sister’s friend in high school, joo know?
We’re going to pick five (5) teams to watch for 2010. This is not necessarily a top five; it’s just a list of five squads to think about. Ready? Let’s dance.
Boise State Broncos: You honestly need to start the discussion here. Why? Simple. Ever heard of “fate?” This is what will happen: BSU will get boned out of a BCS game this year. Next year, they’ll return over 18 starters — basically everyone except CB Kyle Wilson — get a top-five preseason ranking, and if — this is big if — they beat Virginia Tech on September 4, they have a legitimate shot to make the BCS title game next year. Voters, and America as a whole (”Sports Nation!”) will feel bad about what happened in 2009. Smurf Turf for life.
Also, how good a first two weekends of CFB 2010 is it next year? Boise vs. Virginia Tech, and then Miami vs. Ohio State the very next week? Take it, Chris Tucker, friend of Donald Sterling that you are…
Oregon Ducks : Freshman sensation LaMichael James will return, and so should Masoli. Here’s the problem: they play at USC (Carroll will have been thinking about that game for close to a year when it happens) and on the same day as OSU/Miami, they play at Tennessee, which Oregon should win, but could very easily lose. The talent is good — return almost everyone, although TE Ed Dickson is a huge cog in the machine and he’ll be gone, likely to mire in obscurity running six-year out-routes for Tampa Bay — but those two games could seriously sink ‘em in terms of any type of national picture.
Wisconsin Badgers : Tolzien and Clay come back. The majority of the defense will too. They get OSU — a possible top-3 preseason team — to come to Madison. They visit Michigan, which might be a difficult by late 2010 (but probably won’t be). They also visit Iowa. That game could decide the Big Ten for 2010. Wisco needs to shake the permeating notion in both of their money sports — football and hoops — that they’re always one of those teams you keep your eye on, but never really take seriously at the end of the day. I love Bo Ryan’s basketball teams. I love Bielama’s football teams. I never expect them to take the next step, though. I do, however, always enjoy this:
Arkansas Razorbacks : Been talking this up for about 15 months. I heard this story once, can’t really confirm it because I don’t know Lloyd Carr personally. Carr apparently made Ryan Mallett the only QB he personally recruited — like flew to Texas on Friday nights, flew back to Ann Arbor on Saturdays — in years, possibly since Griese, Brady, etc. He was that impressed. This dude has a cannon. Now, granted, their defense isn’t anything to salivate over, but their toughest test is probably Bama, which is AT HOME, in September (Bama loses everyone big on D, and will be still learning to win then) … just saying, speaking of “stories people love,” how about “Benedict Arnold made good.” Also, did you know John L. Smith is their special teams coach? Whoa now:
Florida State Seminoles: Do I think they can do a lot? No. The two best teams in the ACC should be Duke — er, Miami and Virginia Tech. (Back to the old days!) But E.J. Manuel and Christian Ponder could be a curious combo. Bowden’s last year (?) could be an interesting situation. Mickey Andrews out of the picture, and maybe the D gets new life? If this team came out of nowhere and went 9-3, 10-2, I’m just saying it wouldn’t completely surprise me. I mean, c’mon, he’s already graduated, friends:

The PSU D won’t be the biggest problem next year. We’ll lose Lee and Odrick, 2 studs (though Lee is still recovering from knee issues), and more than likely lose Bowman. Losing Hull is addition by subtraction, as Mauti is 2x as good.
The bigger problem will be the new QB and replacing Royster (if he leaves). I’m guessing next year will be heavy on the spread option read, and Newsome is really going to struggle when PSU travels to OSU, ALA, etc. Let’s face it – JayPa isn’t exactly known for developing solid QB skills either.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
wow. that wasn’t right.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Stanford vs. ND woulda been fun too if Charlie Weis had a clue how to coach.
fun to throw rocks at?
/ok, i’m done
November 25th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Oregon State > Oregon in 2010. Easier schedule and nearly entire team back minus basically Canfield and Kristick. Entire O-line and D-lines back. Rodgers brothers back. Secondary will be better. USC/Cal/UO at home.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Arkansas = this years Ole Miss. Beat a few shitty teams to end the season, have a “name” qb, and the SEC is legally required to have 2 top 5 teams in the preseason poll.
Wisconsin sucks, slowly regressing under Bielema.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
this confirms that BBoB is TBL. he loves this game.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
If Auburn’s 5-0 start had panned out, the Iron Bowl would be more epic than it has been in years.
It should still be better than last year’s. Auburn will be better next year once Malzahn’s offense is installed with a year’s worth of recruits, but in the meantime Auburn could end up surprising Alabama and it’s slightly overrated defense.
Tide will probably still win though.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
needs more Kansas
/sobs
November 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
A bit of a reach, I mean just because QB’s get demonstrably worse the longer they are exposed to his coaching doesn’t mean he sucks.
/yes, yes it does
November 25th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Roeth,
I know it was a very small sample, but Newsome looked horible. Hoping one of the freshmen can earn a shot at starting.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
TBL just tweeted that some trash chicks stole his cc at Starbucks. What’s a cc?
November 25th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Oregon State @ Boise State on September 25th
November 25th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Could you actually see JoePa teaching a young quarterback about disguised coverages and how to read defenses? I would love to see the tape of this.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
I give him an incomplete. Most of his exposure was in blowouts where everyone in the stadium knew we’d either run or throw a short pass from a basic formation. I’m not sold that he’s a savior, but still firmly believe he has a chance to be at least as good as M. Robinson.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
We will be a top 5 team
/if we get an offensive coordinator
//since we’re playing that game
November 25th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I could see this before I could see JayPa doing it.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Michigan State will play football next season/
/if they can keep the team out of jail.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Good luck with the Badger prediction and their 1950’s offensive approach.

So a mid round draft pick as a running back?
November 25th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
@Roethlishotdog – Can ND have Tom Bradley? We don’t need an offensive coach. Need a D coach and a good motivator. Bradley would be the tits in South Bend.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Notre Dame will win the national championship
/if posts + media coverage = greatness
//They will beat Michigan for the NC
///same criteria
November 25th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Mi Malo Roeth, read that shit wrong.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Bama loses everyone big on D, and will be still learning to win then) …
Bama’s far enough into the Saban recruitng era to worry about replacing defensive players. And the young o-line will be better, and maybe, just maybe McElroy plays with some confidence.
/homer rant
//but seriously, arc-kansas isn’t beatin bama next year
November 25th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
someone needs to find out how joepa okayd that big ten commercial where he is very clearly crapping his pants at the end
November 25th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Who else can I compare Newsome to? We’re not getting anyone drafted as a QB anytime soon.
Maybe – who knows what will happen in a couple of years if/when JoePa leaves. LJ Sr. and Bradley are the frontrunners for the job, but I wouldn’t sell Al Golden short. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Curley went outside the program to avoid picking between LJ/Bradley, and then have both of them leave.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
You’re thinking of Ohio State…the Badgers can pass the ball downfield successfully, more than once per drive too!
November 25th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
You’re thinking of Ohio State…the Badgers can pass the ball downfield successfully, more than once per drive too!
Pryor’s arm sucks.
/trying to bait spencer.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I would temper your expectations, not many pac-10 teams fare well with a first time QB. It can be done, but usually doesn’t work very well.
/you got screwed on the Moevao deal
//Oregon still returns a better team, but does have a tougher schedule
///without looking at the schedule a 2-2 start sounds right for you guys
November 25th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I’m pretty sure at his age you just crap your pants every few minutes, so its kind of tough to schedule around that.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Nebraska has a good shot at 10 wins next year. Schedule is nice. Toughest games are Texas at home, @Washington, @OK St and @TAMU.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Arkansas is next year’s ole miss
November 25th, 2009 at 1:44 pm

November 25th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Come on, Hernia. You are wrong about ND, just admit that. Props on the gravatar, though I would have gone with Sandman.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
But E.J. Manuel and Christian Ponder could be a curious combo
Is Ponder coming back?
November 25th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
South Carolina.
/Standard Jay V operating procedure
/But seriously, if they sign Lattimore…
November 25th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
This is like a randon five-team sampling. Not sure if there is a rhyme or reason to it. The U should be in the top-10 for sure next year. I have done zero research on who will be the teams to beat though, so I can’t say top-5 just yet.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Without reading the comments, let me guess:
I know everything about college football and you don’t.
/Everyone under the sun lately’d
That seems to be the same route BBoB takes when writing his posts. Only he doesn’t watch the games.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Friggin Nico Rosberg just signed on to drive for the new Mercedes team. He hasn’t done a damn thing in his career! It seems like if my last name was Senna I could get a ride! Talk about trading on your daddys name…
/whoever can name what the hell i’m talking about gets a meaningless internet point.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
South Carolina couldn’t do shit in the SEC when both Tennessee and UGA were down this year, what are they going to do when each team gets back to playing good football in the next year or so? SCAR is a dead-end job. No one has, or ever will win there.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
HA, I might have to go with Don Flamenco next. But I don’t think I’ve disputed much of what you’ve said, I’ve simply explained that ND is always going to be a big story in college football whether people like it or not, regardless of performance, talent or inept fat coaches.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
There is a minute chance Moevao plays next year. Like <1% but a chance. I would say the teams return similar teams but UO has a slight advantage b/c their QB is coming back. Mike Riley QB’s traditionally struggle in their first year starting in the system. And OSU will start at least 3-1. Home Eastern WA, Home Louisville, @ Boise State, and Home ASU.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Yo motha!
November 25th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
is Grambling playing tomorrow? That’s all I care about.
November 25th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
GOTS…well…2007 & 2009 they had top 12 classes, 2008 they had a top 25 class. If they ink Lattimore and Floyd…and they are looking good to grab them both…then they will have a top 5 class this year. They were the second youngest team in the country this season. You can keep going on and on about how SC will never win, but eventually Spurrier’s top-flight recruiting is going to pay off. Their main problem in the past couple of years has been depth. 2010, still will be an issue, but they will be good. 2011, they will be loaded.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
This is college football, man, the fate of the world depends on it.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Oh I thought it was for sure he’s been denied. When it comes to that situation I can easily put the rivalry aside and say that Moevao deserves another year, I hate the NCAA sometimes. Kid is getting screwed. Most QBs struggle their first year, hell Masoli was booed off the field multiple times during the first half of last year. I also hope you beat the piss out of boise state.
/back to hating
//beavers suck
November 25th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
What about Cal?
November 25th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Thats some quality homerism JayV. By your logic ND won the title this year.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Jay V: In the two classes that you cite (07 and 09) they signed 60 kids. They had a high ranking because they signed so many damn kids. The ranking is inflated. What SC team has ever been “loaded?” Also, in 2011 you don’t know who will be coaching them. Fla, UGA and UT will be loaded in ‘11 moreso than SCAR.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
what about them?
November 25th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Except that Mallet is good, and Snead is not.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Coming from an NFL guy I laugh at this. Nothing is more ridiculous than the amount of time ESPN et. al. spend talking about the importance of pro football. Trent Dilfer would have you believe going for it on 4th and 2 is akin to mass genocide.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
This is amazing.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
At some point next year they’ll be vastly overrated?
November 25th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
ding ding ding
November 25th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Not sure why you think BSU/VT is in the 1st 2 weeks of the season. Game is being played Oct 4th, which is the 4th week of the season. It will be a nice win for VT. FEDEx field will be taken ovcer by VT fans.

November 25th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Homerism? As for my “logic”, I’m simply trying to point out they have been recruiting their ass off.
We’ll see. Lattimore and Floyd are both the real deal, and will be the two biggest recruits of the Spurrier era. I’m not talking about anything in the past…they are bringing in players in the last 2 years of the quality of which they’ve never gotten before. This is an undeniable fact.
But whatevs.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Nothing is more ridiculous than the amount of time ESPN et. al. spend talking about the importance of pro football.
Agreed. That I can see ESPN analyzing highlights on a Wednesday for a game that happened Sunday never ceases to blow my mind. How much can you pick apart one set of games? But when you only play one game per week and 16 per season, what is ESPN supposed to do to fill the time?
November 25th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Ding ding ding. Very, very true, Sparty.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
not if the next coach can’t get to 9 or 10 wins or a bcs bowl in his first two seasons. they will slowly start to slip into army/navy territory. relevant in only a sentimental way.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
When has Army or Navy ever had their own network?
Next.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
good call on FSU BBoB. They now have a situation similar to last years Miami team in that the young players on Defense are better but can’t get on the field bc Mickey Andrews loves his upperclassmen. G Reid is gonna make a lot of noise next year aswell. Kid Is unreal. Ponder will be back to improve that draft stock and Erk and Jerk will play a big role in Jimbos offense
November 25th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Good point, though Ole Miss has a defense and ARK does not.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Military Channel
November 25th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
but they won’t when the contract runs out. sentimental….
November 25th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I know you enjoy good football, as you should. But NBC likes money, and ND brings them a lot of it.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
but Arkansas isn’t having a season close to what Ole Miss did to close out last year. Nor did Arkansas go into the Swamp and beat the Gators. I don’t think they will receive nearly as much hype.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
I don’t buy that. As lomg as they have the TV contract and the BCS yellow brick road, they will be more relevant than Army/Navy regardless of the success on the field.
But I do agree with you to the extent that if they don’t win in the first couple of years of a new regime, I’m not sure they will ever get back to the elite level.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
When has Army or Navy ever had their own network?
Next.
You can pretty much guarantee that no matter how bad both teams are, the Army-Navy game will be on TV though.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
You really think that’s not getting extended? I will believe that when I see it.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Next.
but they won’t when the contract runs out. sentimental….
I know you enjoy good football, as you should. But NBC likes money, and ND brings them a lot of it.
Isn’t a lot of that generational though? I would assume that Notre Dame’s fanbase scews pretty old as it is, and with kids growing up getting to see any other program they want won’t Notre Dame, unless it actually starts winning and soon, start to make NBC far less of that money as old Catholic’s the country over die?
November 25th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
bingo kiddo. we are getting closer and closer to a generation in the target audience that never saw Notre Dame win a NT, or even come close.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
not that you are a kid…
November 25th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
This is debatable. Love those SEC refs.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
but they didn’t. nor will they torch a highly ranked team like Ole Miss did in their bowl game. they won’t get that high a preseason ranking.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Got to love the self fulfilling prophecy. If I continue to write about them becoming a big story, they will indeed be a big story. Alos, they don’t have their own fucking network. NBC simply shows their games. NBC talks ND football 3.5 hours a week. That’s not a network, that’s a long made for tv movie of the week.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
It’s not that kind of fanbase. If it’s in the blood, it’s there for generation upon generation upon generation…
November 25th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
If Fox only showed Patriots games and no one else in the NFL, you’d probably say Fox was their channel, right? Right.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
I kind of thought the same thing, until I saw where Tir Na Nog in Philly sold out 8 buses to take to the Pittsburgh game…and the demo on the bus was primarily 20somethings who attended Catholic school.
ND’s base fanbase (that sounds redundant) aka Subway Alumni, is still pretty damn strong, no matter how much the interwebs denies this.
/not a Notre Dame fan at all, dont make that mistake
November 25th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
I thought the ratings were not strong this year? Also, the deal netted ND 9 million last year I believe. That is chump change compared to what Florida will get this year from the SEC mega deal.

Correct, that was for the last year of the expiring deal. New deal through 2015 is for more money.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
yep…and further to that, ND is always going to have a large fanbase in NYC, Boston, Philly, & Chicago…four of the key TV markets in the country.
November 25th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Not entirely true.
