Vince Young, Winner … Thanks to Kobe Bryant?
NFL, Video November 30th. 2009, 9:45am
Vince Young threw for 387 yards Sunday. He rushed for eight yards. He orchestrated a game-winning 99-yard drive in which he converted three fourth downs – all with his arm, not his feet – in the final two minutes (video of “the drive” below). Even though Matt Leinart was on the opposite sideline, this wasn’t the Rose Bowl Redux. This was Vince Young looking like an NFL QB who can hang in the pocket, identify a defense, and deliver, instead of panicking and taking off on the run.
The “analyst” who has a history of trashing him, ESPN’s Merrill Hoge, has no choice but to go on TV today and point out what an outstanding performance this was. Tiger Woods may even send Young some patron or perhaps a fruit basket for wiping him out of the headlines for a few hours yesterday afternoon. A thank you note is in order to Kobe Bryant.
When you factor in all the extracurricular stuff Young has been through in the last year – the benching, the cocky quotes to Esquire, the “questionable” shirtless photos, the brief-yet-bizarre runaway/gun quagmire … this 99-yard game-winning drive has to be one of the better NFL stories this season. We’re not going to go overboard here and say Vince Young is “back” or “going to be an elite NFL QB.” That would be silly. In this somewhat improbable Titans 5-game winning streak, Young had been good for four games; Sunday, he was excellent.
In the preseason, we predicted he’d be starting midway through the season. We had no clue he’d have a game like this. Yes, it helps to have an outstanding line that has paved the way for Chris Johnson to become an MVP candidate who could rush for 2,000 yards. But it’s not like Young’s receivers are considerably better than the ones Jay Cutler is throwing to. Marginally better? Yes. But it remains one of the weaker receiving corps in the league.
Reality is likely to set in for Young next weekend against the Colts. It shouldn’t diminish from Sunday’s stellar performance.
MVP rankings (the last non-QB, non-RB to capture the award is Jerry Rice in 1990):
1. Chris Johnson, Titans
2. Brett Favre, Vikins – Upon closer inspection, and after receiving a deeply heartfelt email from a reader, we’ve moved him up.
3. Drew Brees, Saints
4. Peyton Manning, Colts
5. Jared Allen, Vikings
Hot Girlfriend = Improvement on the Field?
Kyle Boller, whose relationship with beauty queen Carrie Prejean is now in the open, had perhaps the best game of his pro career Sunday – 282 passing yards and a touchdown in a loss to Seattle. He nearly had a long TD run but was ruled down at the one-yard line.
Brady Quinn, whose relationship with gymnast Alicia Sacramone is now in the open, performed … admirably? … in a 16-7 loss to the Bengals. He had a touchdown run. He didn’t thrown an interception of fumble against the top scoring defense in the league, which probably should qualify as a moral victory.
The Jets Are Not Going to the Playoffs
Obligatory note on our favorite team – this “playoff” chatter is quite comical. The Jets are not going to the playoffs. Mathematically, they remain alive, but they lose a tiebreaker to two teams also in the hunt – Miami and Jacksonville. (And they own a tiebreaker against Houston and Tennessee.) We’ll continue to root for the Jets and against any AFC team that has a shot at the playoffs. But we’re realists, and it just isn’t happening. Two questions, though: 1) When was the last time you’ve seen a defender get two interceptions (Kerry Rhodes), but not make a tackle? 2) Why isn’t Vernon Gholston playing? Is the plan to let him rot on the bench forever? Is Rex waiting for the season to officially be over before putting him back on the field? Can’t Rex at least insert Gholston on random 3rd and long situations and just turn him loose?

C. Thomas Howell is so pissed right now.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:49 am
TBL, on the plus side for the Jets: Darrelle Revis is the best CB in the league. On the minus side: Gholston is looking like a bust.
As for VY, he seems to play great when loved and little pressure. The spotlight is coming back to him. Let’s see how he handles it.

I don’t know… the Indy D looked really really ordinary against Houston, until Schaub shit the bed. Early line is Indy -7, would definitely consider the Titans covering.

Someone needs to make a TBL Wiki to explain all the references. What’s this one again?
November 30th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Wasnt C Thomas Howell the one that always ripped on TBL?
November 30th, 2009 at 9:54 am
It’s really hard to captain a team when you’re only the 3rd best shortstop on the team.

Steeler game so frustrating. God they miss Polamalu – no one else in the secondary can tackle or play the ball in the air.

A few NFL scribes (particularly Lombardi) say if he were cut, nobody would pick him up. One of the biggest busts of the past 10 years.

Jared Allen is getting tired of all the love the old redneck is getting and may have to choke a bitch to remind folks he’s still there.

I remember cursing very loudly when they drafted him. Same with Sanchez (although I still have hope for Sanchez).

I covered the Vince Young era for student media at UT so Vince Young will always be a sports hero in my mind no matter what. I’m just really happy for him. Will he ever win a Super Bowl? Who knows, but right now it doesn’t matter. He’s back and winning games and making people eat crow.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:59 am
That’s all he does, bro.
November 30th, 2009 at 9:59 am
And he seems to whine and pout until he quits when something goes wrong. He was left for dead before this stretch. We’ll see what happens when something goes wrong.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Eric Berry is loving the Steelers without Troy. His agent can point to them and say, “see what having a great safety does for your defense” and he will be a top-7 pick. Also, while Cutler has sucked ass this year, that offensive line is hilarious. They are so terrible.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:00 am
We did the MVP discussion last night… Johnson has been phenomenal for the last 6 games. However, he still played when they were 0-6. What makes his Most Valuable? If anyone is on the Titans, it’s Vince Young.
That said, Favre and Manning are easily the 2 most valuable guys right now, with Brees a not to distant 3rd.
1. Manning. Yawn. The Colts are 11-0. Marvin is retired and their new #2 receiver has played 2 games.
2. Favre. The Vikes were a perennial disappointment that always was missing a QB. They have their QB and are 10-1 and Favre is playing the best football of his career (damnit).
3. Brees. He’s 3rd because the Saints undefeated start is more than just him. However, he’s still the guy that stirs the drink in N’awlins.

called the doctor’s office just to hear, “thank you for holding, there are 19 callers ahead of you.” must have been some rough turkey bowls out there this year.

Thank God he didn’t ask LeBron for advice
/hi-yooooooooooooooo
November 30th, 2009 at 10:03 am
It is such a tough call between Peyton and Favre for MVP right now. The reason I go with Manning is that if you take each off of their team, I think the Vikes win 8+ games. No way Indy wins jack without Peyton.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:03 am
It’s as if the Vikings were bottom feeders last year and Favre ressurected them. THEY WERE 10-6 WITH TAVARIS JACKSON AND WENT TO THE PLAYOFFS. I didn’t think the media could find a new way to make me hate Favre more, but this MVP talk is fucking crazy. That team is stacked on both sides of the ball. They would make any half-competent QB look good. First Grady, now this post. Today’s not going to be a good day.

That’s the big question. So far everything’s coming up roses but what happens after a couple of bad outings? Young has all the physical skills. But he was riding the pine cause his mental toughness was doubted.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Manning’s run into voter fatigue the way Jordan did in the NBA. Shaun Alexander was his Karl Malone. Most of the voters are old white dudes. What old white dude doesn’t want to see a 40 year old white dude who was written off when MVP? Favre’s got that sucker wrapped up.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:07 am
favre and manning split the MVP award this year, no one can decide to becomes the first 4 time winner so they make two guys who have shared it before share it with each other. symmetry is beautiful.

Just looked this up out of curiosity
Vince Young: 7 starts, completed 62.9% passes for 1010 yards, 4 TDs to 2 INTs
John Doe: 6 starts, completed 62.2% passes for 1267 yards, 11 TDs to 7 INTs
Any guess who John Doe is?

Right now I think he goes 3rd or 4th, to either Tampa Bay or Detroit.

Here’s a question: how high will the bidding for Peyton Manning to be an offensive coordinator when he retires? High enough to keep him out of the media?

he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy that could sit there and just watch a game and talk about it when he knows he’s smarter than everyone on both sides of the field.

Is John Doe Alex Smith?
Dude was awesome watching Texas A&M receivers run by him.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:19 am
He will be an analyst for sure. Why go the coaching route when you can be the lead analyst for SNF or MNF and make just as much as a coach? Being an analyst has got to be the best job ever for ex players.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:19 am
I don’t know, but I’d guess Deion Sanders would have to be a prime candidate.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:19 am

No, but golf clubs were involved.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Correct. If we’re handing out “Welcome Back From the Dead” awards, he deserves one too.
/I’ve always defended him
Also, my favorite part of MMQB today:
November 30th, 2009 at 10:20 am
yea, but i doubt he’d be a good OC…couldn’t you just see him ripping into his “idiot QB” who didn’t see that the safeties wwere rolling coverage to the strong side in the first quarter when the DE doesn’t blitz and missed the hot route to the soft spot?
being the QB for peyton would be like taking painting lessons from picasso…you can’t understand what he’s doing, and you never will, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get chewed out at every opportunity.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:20 am
A few NFL scribes (particularly Lombardi) say if he were cut, nobody would pick him up. One of the biggest busts of the past 10 years.
Oh I think Mangini would be all over that shit.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Is John Doe Alex Smith?
That would be my guess, just not sure if he’s played 6 games yet.

The week 17 games where he has the headset on and is screaming at Sorgi are always a good time.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Jared Allen has over 50% of his sacks against one team and he is #5 on the MVP list?
November 30th, 2009 at 10:24 am
This was my favorite quote from Sunday’s game:
November 30th, 2009 at 10:24 am
you mean when that asshole dungy always rests his players making sure they’re completely rusty and unprepared for the playoffs?
/still salty that dungy rested the starters in 2007 and let a division rival get into the playoffs over the more deserving browns, which might have been the last time the browns make it into the playoffs in my lifetime
November 30th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Maybe, but you’ve got to assume that a guy that’s basically acted as an o-coordinator for his entire career would be pretty decent at it as a full time job.
Though I would kill to have him as an analyst…or as the permanent SNL host…or a Sportscenter Anchor…basically anything where he can do his “I’m an asshole, but I’m funny enough that you don’t care that I’m an asshole” schtick.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:25 am
he’s overrated. for an “elite” player, he gets absolutely owned way too often.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:27 am
absolutely.
and for the same reasons i think peyton would be an awesome coach, i think ray lewis would be an awesome coach.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:27 am
being the QB for peyton would be like taking painting lessons from picasso…you can’t understand what he’s doing, and you never will, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get chewed out at every opportunity.
Truth… OCs need to be more of a bob ross type.

In bang for salary cap buck, I’d much rather have Robert Mathis.
/homer’d
//but still troofed
November 30th, 2009 at 10:28 am
double troofed.
you watch the colts more than i do (unfortunately too…love em), would you say mathis at least = freeney at this point? mathis is unbelievable.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Jared Allen got owned by Max Starks…which is very sad
November 30th, 2009 at 10:29 am
His press conferences would be the stuff of legend.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:31 am
i just remember the opening game against the browns…joe thomas absolutely destroyed allen. it wasn’t even a contest…i still have that game on my DVR because it was such a clinic (even if the rest of the game was just brutal from a browns pov).
November 30th, 2009 at 10:31 am
It’s hard to say. I think Freeney is more of an every-down headache for OC’s and linemen, but Mathis is better at making big plays. Not sure how Mathis would be if he had had to line up against teams’ LT’s all game.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Jared Allen got owned by Max Starks…which is very sad
in allen’s defense, he can no longer drink 30 beers in one sitting.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Allen has 6.5 sacks versus Darren Colledge (who blows even at LG his original position) and T.J. Lang, a 4th-round rookie. Doesn’t seem like #5 on the MVP list. I would think Rivers should start to get some consideration on the list now that SD has won six in a row.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:33 am
id like to see mathis in a 3-4 as an OLB…watching him run down RB’s makes me think his skill set would translate pretty well.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:41 am
KC res – can you email me the error?
i dont see one
November 30th, 2009 at 10:43 am
In that way, he reminds of Greg Lloyd of the Steelers who was just a beast from the outside and lined up on the line in some of the Steeler’s funky defenses.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:43 am
He lost his starting job, rumors swirled about him wanting to commit suicide, he watched as the team he used to QB went to the best record in the Conference, his mentor was murdered, he wasn’t given a real chance to win back his spot, his coach really didn’t want to place him back into the starting role, and there are people who are watching for him to fail. But, no he isn’t really coming back from or playing under any type of adversity.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Jared Allen is only considered an MVP candidate on here because of the “anyone but Favre” mentality. 24 TD’s and 3 picks? He has absolutely mastered that offense,is having his best year of his career at 40, and is making everyone on the offense better on a 1 loss team. If that isn’t MVP, what is?
November 30th, 2009 at 10:51 am
I’d like to thank my defense for giving up 33ppg under KC and pulling it down to 16 ppg since I’ve taken over. I’ll also give a shoutout to the league for making these last 6 weeks the lightest part of our schedule.
/ VY Sausage
November 30th, 2009 at 10:52 am
that’s definitely MVP-worthy, but peyton is doing the same thing with far less talent on his side.
personally, if i wasn’t such a big peyton fan, id have no problem with favre winning it.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:52 am
oh, and chris johnson better get some MVP love too.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:53 am
