List! Top 30 (50, Really) Films of the Last Decade
1-liner, Movies November 30th. 2009, 12:40pmBest Movies of the ’00s: Do we really need to see History of Violence again? Thought that movie was awful. On one list, it was tied for 17th best movie this decade. Thought that a movie it was tied with, Mulholland Drive, was very, very good. Foreign films dominate this list. In related news, we were unable to see The Road this past weekend. This week, hopefully. No spoilers in the comments, please. [TIFF]

Any list of good movies that has Gerry and Dogville on it is not worth paying attention to.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
and i feel justified.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
The first half of History of Violence was awesome.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Sure are a lot of foreign films on that list from a Canadian website.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I said it when I saw it. I’ll say it again. It was interesting for an hour. Then it turned into a Charles Bronson movie.
The only movie I recognized before #17 was The New World. AKA Terence Malick’s worst movie.

It’s not the lead talking point for Mike Lupica on “The Sports Reporters.” When Lupica suggested on Sunday that Tiger needed to handle his driveway fender-bender the way A-Rod handled his steroids controversy, I damn near fell out of my hotel bed in anger when Bill Rhoden didn’t leap from his chair and slap the former dwarf bowling champion.

Liked it more than A Thin Red Line, which was 2 1/2 hours of star cameos interspersed with shots of birds and lizards.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Eatern Promises>History of Violence
No “BeerFest”
WTF?

***SPOIER ALERT***: post-apocalyptic roads leave much to be desired in terms of ample shoulder and clearly marked turning lanes. The last surviving members of the AAA would not approve.
/judging from the trailers

Who was in History of Violence? I think I saw it but am too lazy to look it up.
Pan’s Labyrinth made the list. It was visually stunning but was one of the most depressing movies I’ve ever seen. I think getting hit by a bus would have felt better than the way I felt after that movie was over.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
I didn’t like A Thin Red Line for the same reasons. Really a coin-flip for me. I also couldn’t tell the difference between Adrien Brody and Jim Caviziel, neither of whom were household names at the time.
I didn’t recognize or see most of the foreign films on there, but of the films I do recognize, the only one I don’t actively dislike is The Royal Tennenbaums (which I absolutely love)
November 30th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Agreed, not enough Viggo Mortensen penis is History for my liking.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Eastern Promises was a fucking AWESOME movie.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Coffee! Now!
History of Violence was great.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
That’s the one where William Hurt was less convincing as a mob boss than Rip Taylor would be.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
his performance with his accent was so over-the-top that it was perfect.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
If anyone actually ever needed a reason to build an amazing home theater, this is a great one. The imagery and the powerful score are nothing short of stunning.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
History of Violence is the shit. It’d definitely make my top 10 of the decade. Eternal Sunshine would top it, for sure.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
12. The New World (Terrence Malick, USA)
This list officially sux.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Adaptation would make mine. I was laughing hysterically when it became obvious that his brother had taken over writing the script for the actual movie we were watching, and everybody else in the theater was looking at me like I was an idiot.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
How does The Room not make the list?
November 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Thought History was terribly overrrated. The gym class scene alone made the whole thing laughable.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
damn link is taking forever to load. Man on Fire better be on that list
November 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
elephant was terrific, should be higher.
don’t like that list, mostly b/c it’s filled with movies most of the world has never seen or heard of.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Eastern Promises was awesome.
Gal – It had Viggo, that chick from ER who does full frontal in every movie I’ve seen her in, William Hurt (this is where the movie sags),

If you’re a fan of shitty cinema, definitely check out any made-for-ScyFy channel movie. Holy shit yesterday was awesome, with back-to-back showings of Thor and a Cyclops movie. Thor’s rapidly changing, shitty accents were awesome, as was Eric Roberts Roman-era ruler.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
especially the ones starring the guy from Iron Chef America.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
It’s not. You’ll maybe recognize four or five titles on the list. They’re mostly foreign films.
Thanks everyone. I did see History of Violence. Eastern Promises IS way better.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
If you’re a fan of shitty cinema, definitely check out any made-for-ScyFy channel movie.
lol, nice
November 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
It’s not
darn. great movie
November 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
No Let the Right One In? List fail.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
As for subject matter, the list below covers off aching love, brutal violence, bizarre comedy and every conceivable taboo.
Based on this, I’m kind of hurt Snatch isn’t on the list.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
the best was sharks in venice with stephen baldwin.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Little Nicky was pretty damn good. Don’t see it on the list though.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I saw Mega-Shark vs. Giant Octopus on Sat. My favorite part was either the shark eating the Golden Gate Bridge, or the octopus taking out a fighter jet as it was flying over the ocean.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Ice Spiders FTW!!!!!!!!!!!
November 30th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
That’s the worst best of 00’s list I’ve seen yet… my god.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
They couldn’t choose between that one and Big Daddy, so they just left both of them off.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
The Globe & Mail is a worthless rag of a newspaper. It tries way too hard to be some high-minded New York Times imitation. For proof, see this shitty list.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Big Daddy came out in the 90s.
/missing the point
November 30th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
The Prestige was awesome. A little ridiculous at the end, but very entertaining.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
agreed
eastern promises was 17x the movie history of violence was
November 30th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
This list makes me feel the same way I feel when I look at a “best album” list and like half of them are from somebody like Richard Thompson.
/I like Richard Thompson
//but come on
November 30th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Mulholland Drive was one of the worst movies i’ve seen in my entire life. The only people that like it are artsy fartsy a-holes and critics. It totally reeked of “I can make a film that you guys can’t understand”. Even though Naomi Watts making out with a chick was Bonerville.
I will never comment on a movie post again after reading that TBL liked that movie.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Any list that doesn’t have City of God in the top 10, let alone top 30, is completely 100 percent invalid.
November 30th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
I’m glad to see Mulholland Drive on there — what a great movie. I disagree about History of Violence; I thoroughly enjoyed that one as well.
How did Memento not make this list?
November 30th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
richard thompson is a fucking badass tho…
November 30th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I’ll take “Skeeter” for 200 Alex. So awesome in its putrid-ness. With that Corin Nemec-Corky Nemesis–whatever his name is…
November 30th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days is good. Real good.
November 30th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Can’t believe an international list would leave off Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It had everything. Great action, good plot, good love-story and even good comedy at times.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
I really thought History of Violence was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Cheap, tawdry and not even titillating to justify it.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
City of God is the best movie ever.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
