If You Didn’t Get the Memo, the Boo-yah Era Is Over
1-liner, ESPN, Race December 1st. 2009, 9:45amBoo-yah: The job market remains troubling. According to the NY Times, some minorities are “scrubbing [resumes] of any details that might tip off [their] skin color” because there is “ample evidence that racial inequities remain when it comes to employment.” Check out this quote, which may be interesting to the suits in Bristol: “You don’t want to be Stephen A. Smith. You want to be Bryant Gumbel. You don’t even want to be Stuart Scott. You don’t want to be, ‘Booyah.’”

the only identifying factor on my resume is my first name…not too many females are named Mark. other than that, nobody reading my resume would ever know my gender or race. everyone regardless of race or gender should do this. it requires the prospective employer to judge more on facts and less on unconscious bias.

This article is on target, until it gets to the sports broadcasting analogy, where it proceeds to be completely inaccurate. Trust me, I’d rather be anything but a brown eyed, brown haired dude doing sports at this point in my career. I look and talk like everyone else, which is tough to try and distinguish yourself in the market.
