Rex Grossman, Mental Midget
Uncategorized September 13th. 2007, 12:44pm
Why is this story so surprising? Former Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is a linebackers coach with the Chargers. He told his guys last Sunday that they needed to get into Rex’s head because the Bears QB is a mental midget.
Predictably, there’s outrage in Chicago. Lame phrases like ‘rallying point‘ are being thrown around. They’re 0-1! The real interesting thing to note is that the public is backing Rex once again. In the flash of some trash talk, Rex went from loathed to loved. The papers, blogs and message boards that were calling for his head Sunday night are rushing to his defense.
At the least, we must commend Bears fans for cultivating that family atmosphere in Chicago. We can make fun of our team, but if an outsider does it … it’s on, bitch.

This is not surprising at all. What’s makes it better is that the Bears center Olin Kreutz called Rivera “mean” for saying it, but Kreutz didn’t say Rivera was incorrect. Sometimes the truth is mean. They’d be better without Rex but I don’t think it matters this year as long as they insist on starting Cedric Benson.
Here’s a question for the Bears fans out there: Why aren’t y’all pissed at Lovie?
September 13th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Come on Thomas, we don’t need to start this Benson 1500 yard debate again. You saw how upset Swandog got last time. We don’t need any more imature crying and profanity in here today.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
All of the Bears fans I’ve talked to think it’s hilarious that Rivera supposedly called Rex a mental midget! We all think he sucks and we want Griese to get at least one start. Even my mother, who spends her afternoons working with 4 and 5yr olds all day, says Rex has ADD!
September 13th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
The classic Rex moment I will never forget is him being dumb enough to admit he didn’t properly prepare himself to play the Packers on New Year’s Eve because he was too busy thinking about partying.
I also find it funny how Bears fans have gotten it into their heads that Brian Griese is the second coming. You guys have Brian Griese not Bob Griese.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
@ Mozatta – I missed that one. glad i did, too. I’ll drop it.
@ sportsgal – at least you’re not stuck with Joey Errington.
@ cbh49er – Brian Griese may not be the second coming, but I think he’s a lot better than Rex Grossman. that’s not saying much, though.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
We don’t think Brian Griese is the second coming, he’s the only option Angelo provided for the team, and we’re pretty certain he can’t be any worse than Rex. We just want someone who can grasp an offensive play book and not fumble the snap from one of the best centers in the league.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
Why Would Bears Fans be mad at Lovie? was the only thing worth addressing.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
would rivera prefer ivy leaguer jay fiedler at qb?
September 13th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
See there is something that everyone doesn’t seem to understand about the Grossman Situation… That being, he is simultaneously the biggest threat to the opposing defense as well as to the bears offense. without him, we have ZERO offensive threat. With greise in there, D’s can focus on the run, cause he cant go deep with any accuracy typically. plus, he is a broken down old man. he has never had any real success, and he has far less PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE than does Rex. No one I know, that has a brain, thinks Griese is the second coming of shit. Orton would be next in line i think if they pulled rex. but dont fret, rex will probably throw for 300+ and a couple TDs against the chiefs this weekend and half of you will be slobbing on his balls again like idiots.
Anyways, the way the bears see it, and lovie im sure, is that it is better to keep defenses on their heels with rex in there, and possibly eat a mistake here and there occationally, than to have some dead armed pussie in there where D’s can stack the line and hurt all our running backs. Rex throws one of the nicer deep balls in the league, and that is what the bears offense is planned around. please, educate yourselves on the bears style of play before you criticize every decesion they make. rex can make all the throws Turner’s offense calls for, griese cant. simple as that. oh yea, rex only has like 20 starts under his belt also, and a few more notes, they faced a top 3 or 5 defense in week one, offenses notoriously start really slow now a days since everyone takes off the preseason, the bears never get the run game going till like week 3 or 4, hmmmmm…. anything else? oh yea, go bears. and oh yea, im keeping tally of the bashers so when i win the two posts for the bears making the big game again, ill be sure to include you all.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
and oh yea, kreutz didnt say he was mean, he said that rivera has a penchant for opening his mouth a little too much, which is probably why he was passed up for head coaching positions like 6 times the last two offseasons, and took a demotion from defensive coord, to linebackers coach in a scheme he is totally unfamiliar with, and is now like 4th in line to take over the chargers when they fire norvie, and no longer has a job in chicago.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Sorry to keep posting, but I disagree completely with Swandong, my fellow Bears fan. Griese, while older, throws MUCH more accurately than Rex. Sure, Rex adds the threat of a deep pass, but the whole beauty of running a west coast offense is having an intelligent, accurate thrower making 7-10 yard passes to get the first down and move the offense quickly down the field. The big pass play only works so often, and it becomes completely ineffective if it leads to a friggin interception!
September 13th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Who are the Bears?
September 13th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Uh, whoever said the Bears were trying to run a west coast offense? Did I miss a memo or is just what you HOPE the Bears would run? Perhaps you would like to bring John SHoop back as well, maybe Dick Jauron? GImme a break. You are one of the dumb Bears fans. The quote of “the second string quarterback is the most popular player in town” applies to you.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
And this is a surprise to whom?
Grossman has a cannon for an arm and, when he’s on, is a dangerous QB. The problem is that you never know when that next mental fart will come. It can be next week, next quarter, or next play.
The thing is that Lovie is in his corner and that neither Griese nor Orton are a better option.
But if the Bears don’t make it back to the SB, there’s a good chance they’ll be drafting Colt Brennan in next year’s draft.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
SICK! Why did you say that, now ima be thinking about that all damn year.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
Griese sucks. I, too, am baffled by the Griese admiration. How many teams has he been on and left/forced out because there was a better, unproven option?
Bears fans – Have you actually followed Griese’s career? This guy is dumb. Sectsy isn’t that horrible. He’s bad, yes, but got you to a SB. Griese would get you nowhere.

Griese’s career #s. He couldn’t even hang on in Miami and Tampa… probably over the past 3 or 4 years, the teams with the worst QB situations in the league.
September 13th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Who among us has ever slobbed on Rex’s balls? All those 100 QB rating games last year? They came against the the Lions, the Seahawks, the Bills, the Niners and the Giants. Those teams were ranked 25th, 16th, 7th (because of a 28th-ranked run D), 26th and 28th against the pass. It’s not like the guy was lighting up the Ravens. I’ve never thought he was a capable NFL QB. Still don’t. But it’s certainly interesting to watch it all play out.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
One of the Bears players was quoted as saying, “Ron just showed why he’s not here anymore.”
I think that says it all.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Yes, I’m a mental midget just like Rex. I miss the days of Dick Jaron and John Schoop. I wish Craig Krenzel was still our QB. Why don’t you tell me what kind of offense Ron Turner is trying to run? If they want “cannon arm” Rex to be QB, why do they rarely give him the opportunity to throw the ball deep? Why, if Rex is so great, do they continue to be a team that predominantly runs the ball?
Fellow TBL readers, there are Bears fans in the city that are in touch with reality and know Rex is a moron. We just can’t do anything about the fact that he’s our QB. At least we won’t cheer if he gets hurt like those douche bag Jets fans.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Re: sportsgal116
Are you sure you wouldn’t cheer?
September 13th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
The Bears D is like when someone puts those huge ass chrome rims that go for 2K a pop on a piece of crap Buick from 1978.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
those Jets fans should be pissed that Pennington is on the roster, much less the starter. They weren’t cheering because he got hurt. They were cheering because he was leaving the field (regardless the reason). They pay for the tickets, they can cheer and boo all they want. If Falcons fans had booed Vick when he fucked up maybe he wouldn’t have gotten such a big head.
WOW, I’ll be so impressed if Rex puts up big numbers against the Chiefs. hahaha. the only person that will impress is Lovie.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
Yeah, but he ain’t no midget where it counts.
Like grapefruits, people. Like fucking grapefruits.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Sorry to keep picking on you Swandog, but I was reading the comments and I kept seeing small, concise replies. Then I get to this one that’s 12 paragraphs and by reading the 1st sentence I knew it was yours. So I skipped it.
Anyhow, Swandog can you give us the cliff notes version of your reply? Just a few important bullets would be great.
Thanks

Kyle Orton is the answer…he made it through his adolescent Jack Daniels’ Days and is ready to use that cannon he used at Purdue.
Seriously, whoever said Rex keeps the D on their heels is on the money. We will eat the mistakes and just hope for big plays from the D (which is harder with out Mike Brown on patrol).
But when is enough enough? Rex makes me cry weekly…when will Lovie say enough?
September 13th, 2007 at 2:32 pm
@bsanders
HOw many teams you see lighting up the ravens? Bears? Chargers? NOT VERY MANY. GOOD TRY THOUGH.
@”sportsgal”

call me crazy, but i think that 47 completions of 20+ yards and 8 completions of 40+ yards would qualify the bears offense as open. they run a pro set backfield, which as lovie says, makes them run the ball off the plane. If you had any insight into the bears at all, you would know that the bears have ALWAYS BEEN A RUNNING ORGANIZATION. we have never had a quarterback. but i dunno, i guess lots of west coast offenses complete 55 balls of 20 yards or more, and since rex only completed about 55% last year, that would mean they threw downfield probably close to 100 or more times last year, or a 1 in 4 ratio of rex’s total attempts.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
@mozatta
I didnt care for you to reply. feel free to observe another post, or you know, not aknowledge my presense if you desire to ignore me.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
it’s funny that people are trying to use Rex’s stats to prove a point.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
You keep reading my posts i take it? and yes, those stats did prove a point, that the chick has no fucking clue. she thinks the bears are running a west coast offense. the long balls tend to point the other way.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Griese would be a fine fit. He had problems in other places because teams needed to rely on him to carry them. The Bears simply need someone to manage the game and not make mistakes. Griese is a solid veteran and can do that.
September 13th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
After losing Mike Brown again, you STILL think that the Bears won’t need a quarterback to WIN games for them. Yes, and I am the unintelligent Bears fan.
September 13th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
I don’t remember at any point in my post saying, “The bears run a west coast offense.” We can’t run a West Coast offense with Rex Grossman on the field because his only positive asset is that he can throw the ball far. He can’t throw it accurately, but he can throw it far. We have to run 60% of the time because our QB sucks. The majority of teams in the NFL run a West Coast style offense. We don’t even have that option because of our QB.
Do I think Brian Griese is the answer to our prayers? No. Do I think he’s the best option we have at QB? Yes. If Trent Dilfer can win a Super Bowl, Brian Griese can too.
September 13th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Just stop. You are ignorant as hell and I’m tired of trying to teach girly about football. Shouldn’t you be watching the WOmen’s World Cup?
September 13th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Sorry, that’s not what I meant to say. What I meant to say was why aren’t you making me a sandwich?
September 13th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
Thanks, but I don’t need you to teach me anything about football. In fact, you should stay away from teaching football to ANYONE, we don’t need you turning more people in this country into morons. Actually, you should give Teen Miss South Carolina a call, I don’t think it’s possible for you to make her any dumber than she already is!
September 13th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I like popcorn.
September 13th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Hey TBL, why don’t you do us all a favor and refrain from posting anything about the Bears FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON. I don’t care what happens – Lovie stabs his wife and her boyfriend, R. Manning blows up an Apple store, Rex gets sued for turning over an STD – it’ll really bump up the intelligent discourse. Which, of course, is what we all come here for.
Not the tits and NBA love. Well….maybe the tits.
